Cat familiar and smart aleck Australian Midnite has been stuck as a cat for years, traded from human to human dabbling in the magical underground. When a new drug, stardust, saturates the market, Nite knows he needs out, but he’s bound by a collar and helpless. They may have taken his claws, but they’ll never take the sass.
Rexford Redsky, probationary covenmaster of Red Sky has been dealing with humans dabbling in mage business for too long, in between bouts of cleaning up the messes left behind by the mass deaths of his kind. Families destroyed, covens burned to the ground, Rex is left with a little boy who nobody wants to claim. When a little black cat decides his leather jacket is now his home, the key to stopping their deaths is at hand.
It started with an idea, an explosion in my mind. “Mages on motorcycles.” I couldn’t get the image out of my head of a sassy little black cat riding in his owner’s jacket cracking jokes that humans can’t hear. When someone asked me to describe my book, badly, in one sentence it all came together. “Mages on motorcycles getting raptured after snorting their kind’s remains.”

Besties. I have found my new favorite shifter romance, and it’s honestly not even close. If you’re anything like me and constantly feel let down by there being very little shifting/time spent in animal form in shifter books, look no further. There was a ton of time spent in cat form in this, and it was ADORABLE. Utterly charming. Surprisingly funny as well, as I didn’t really know anything about the book or author going in. I laughed out loud several times. It was also hot. Did I mention adorable? So much time spent being a cat and doing cat stuff, and the MCs interacting and cuddling tons while shifted. Perfect 😗👌
I thought the world/magic system was interesting as well, and didn’t make me break my brain trying to figure out how things worked. Book two is about different characters, and I’m so excited to read that one as well.
There’s omegas and alphas, heats and slick, but it still didn’t feel like an omegaverse novel to me. More like paranormal with those kinds of traits. Highly recommend if you enjoy shifter books, mpreg and plenty of humor.

A long string of drool dripped from his maw.
Nite stiffened when warm hands scooped him up as the young Tack dragged Rod off. Here we go, weeee. Nite hated that initial helpless sensation when a human picked him up, but Rex was always so careful that he didn’t mind.
“Five minutes in his box and he was right as rain.” Doris laughed. “What is it with you and that damn box? Your eyes go dialed up and shit.” Rex glanced at Nite. “Box is box. Dude, I dunno. It’s like… all the warm fuzzies and hugs and safety you can imagine. Box.”
Reeeeex! Nite scrambled out and sank his claws into Rex’s pant leg, tugging. The force stretched Nite’s aching tendons, and he shivered with delight. He gave a few extra tugs until Rex picked him up. Weeee! The world spun as he settled in Rex’s jacket. “’ Sup?”
I had high hopes for this but unfortunately it didn’t work out. I think one part was the plot but another big part was the writing. It felt really clunky and a lot of sentences just did not flow properly.
Nite gave Rex a half grin, smugness twinkling over his delicate features. Nite frowned and went to the fridge…”
Like there’s no transition from grinning to frowning and it feels so off? This is only one example but it made me feel like I was overworking my brain trying to figure out the flow of certain parts. I think this needs a lot of editing.
As for the plot, some things that I wasn’t a huge fan of was the fact that all omega men are gay, and they also are all biologically female in their animal form. I just don’t underhand why, there was anything explained about it. Plus enforcing sexuality based on biology didn’t sit right with me. This world involved mages, other magical creatures, and omegas but no alphas. So it was just adding the option for mpreg really.
Rex and Nite’s relationship progress felt as clunky as the writing. They went from strangers to “we’re comparable so I want to be together forever”, but I wouldn’t even call it insta-love because their actual feelings didn’t come across much at all. It was more about the comparability and the fact that Rex was into how Nite smelt as an omega.
This got me out of a slump and I enjoyed it for the most part. I did kind of start losing interest as nothing happens for quite a while, but I still liked it. I haven't decided if I want to read the next one or not. They just don't interest me as characters at the moment.
I’m really not into this writing style. Lots of clunky dialogue and out of nowhere explanations. I liked to be immersed into the world that’s being created, and I wasn’t getting that here. The cat shifter moments were very adorable though, and I thought I’d be able to stick around just for that but the romance is also not giving romance. No sparks, just lots and lots of talking.
“Familiars were so rare that few ever thought to look for one.”
This book was so not what I expected. Based on the blurb and cover I thought it would be dark with tons of secrets and angst with characters to match. I also don’t usually read books about witches and magical folk but I found the concept of a main character who’d been stuck in the form of a cat interesting and different so I thought I’d give it a try. Let me tell you, except for the interesting and different part I was totally wrong!
To begin with, this wasn’t dark or filled with secrets and angst. The story was exciting and engaging. Yes, people died but there was no deliberate violence. While it’s hard to say much without spoiling the plot I can share that there is a lot going on and it’s full of action and suspense. There’s also lots of it. Unlike many romances the love story isn’t the main plot with the rest a subplot. In this book the action is an equal to the romance. It’s pretty much fifty fifty. It’s also complex enough you have to pay attention to follow along. The world building is just incredible and so real I found myself totally buying into it.
All the characters, not just the two mains, are interesting, three-dimensional and many are even amusing. They have great dynamics and work well together in the story. And some are unpredictable. Not every bad guy is bad nor is every good guy good. I’m thrilled this is the first in a series because I very much want more of them all.
The best part of the book, though, are the two main characters, Rex and Nite. I absolutely adored them both! Rex is so amusing, so caring and selfless. He’s extremely intelligent, intuitive and charming while still strong and sexy. And Nite! Wow! What can I say? He’s just the absolute best! He’s totally believable as a cat shifting familiar. Every action and reaction dead on. His mannerisms, thoughts and words are perfect. I absolutely believe in him. He has such a wry sense of humor, and can be so sarcastic but he’s also sweet, kind, generous and filled with wonder. Despite his age and everything he’s been through he still manages to retain a bit of innocence. (The bit about Red Lobster was so funny!) He’s also vulnerable and so hurt inside it made me just want to hug him. These two were absolutely meant for each other no question. They had an instant attraction and fantastic chemistry but it’s not presented as instalove. They both allowed their relationship to grow and develop. It was just perfect.
I can’t write a review and not mention Vince, the little orphan boy Rex was fostering. Absolutely adorable, he pretty much stole every scene he was in. Everyone loved him and so do I!
My only complaint about this book, and I mean literally the only one, is the way it ended. Or, to be more specific, the way it didn’t. There was no real ending. It just stopped. I turned the page and when I realized that was it I was shocked. I even thought I was missing pages since I was reading an Arc copy. I was so sure I went and downloaded the copy on Unlimited where I sadly discovered was the same. That’s when I faced the truth, there were no missing pages and no real end. I can’t say it’s a cliffhanger. The love story is complete, but I still feel like I was left hanging. Even though I know there will be other books in the series, I still feel there needed to be a little more of an actual end here.
Despite the minor letdown at the end I absolutely loved the book and enthusiastically recommended it to everyone, even those who don’t usually read these kinds of books. I can’t wait for the next one. I’ve never read anything else by Lilo. To be honest, I’d never even heard of her before I signed up for this Arc. I absolutely am going to look and see what else she has written and read some of them. If her other books are as wonderful as this one was, I’m signing up as a new fan.
Amended review: I just finished reading book two, Sailor's Delight, and now I understand better why this book ended like it did. There was no way to write anything else because there's no time. Book two basically picks up where this one ends. So it kind of is a cliffhanger, even though it's a different couple in the next book. This makes me feel much better about everything. And I'll say it again, I really love this book so much.
I wanted to love this but it just wasn’t working for me. I wanted the MCs to have an emotional connection, affection for each other but there wasn’t any of that.
Nite liked the smell and feel of Rex’s magic. Rex was attracted to Nite’s omega smell. Rex binding with a familiar would make him and his coven powerful and Nite wanted to bind so he didn’t get passed around to anyone else. Because they were compatible they decided to get together ? That’s like.. the opposite of romance. 😭
It seemed like a weird magic version of a marriage of convenience when it’s supposed to be like a fated mate, soul-mate scenario.
There’s a point that Rex tells Nite not to feel like he has to choose him as his Mage, that he can sniff around and be physical with others to find the right one for him. This is before any relationship development between them but after Nite plants a kiss on him. I get they’re not together but Rex doesn’t even feel possessive, doesn’t even feel sick or afraid that Nite might pick someone else, it’s very nonchalant. He only becomes a little possessive when Nite goes into heat.
The writing was also a bit weird, there were times that it was hard to tell who was speaking and other times where the chapter was in MC1’s POV but would have some parts that seemed like it was showing the other MC’s POV. It made for a very confusing read.
Sigh.
I loved when Nite was in his cat form, it was adorable. I loved that Rex gave nite’s cat claws and then the magic prosthesis for his human form. Those lil hurt/comfort parts were sooo cute. But everything else felt really flat and the humor started to feel a bit too tryhard 🤷🏻♀️

I've been a fan of Lilo Quie for a bit now and this is the start of another good series. Nite & Rex's story pulled me in from the start and was very interesting and entertaining. I can't wait for more.
"I’ll want you until there are no more red skies."
What an interesting new story/series by Lilo Quie. Self described as “Mages on motorcycles getting raptured after snorting their kind’s remains.”. When I read that I snort laughed. This series has a very unique plot and I can't wait to see what Lilo Quie has in store for us.
I loved these characters and can't wait for book 2. There is no cliff hanger in this story but resolution over the wish crystals will need to occur before this series is complete. Several characters were introduced and I'm hoping each one of them get their own HEA.
Hurt/comfort, kidnapping, mages, familiars, mpreg, brings the heat.

This is yet another Lilo Quie story I love. Not surprising as I love everything by this author. Anyway, this story follows a familiar, Nite, that has been forced to stay in his cat form for a year due to his collar. The coven master of Red Sky, Rex, is also the Grand Mage's son as well as foster dad to Vince, a little 3-year-old boy left alone after his parents die from "wish". When Rex and his small coven are tasked with helping out some sprite's that have been captured by an illegal dealer, he finds Nite. Nite finds his perfect place, snuggled in close to Rex in his leather jacket while riding on Rex's motorcycle. He later finds a few more perfect places, such as by Vince's side and an empty box! There is nothing better to Nite than an empty box and he cannot begin to explain why. There, begins a hesitant relationship between Nite and Rex once Nite is able to shift into a human again. Well, hesitant on Rex's part because he finds Nite has never had a say in how or with whom he lives. Nite comes to realize he has no idea what being an omega and familiar really means due to not being raised by magical people. He also finds that a mage can "hear" him while he is in cat form which leads to a little embarrassment when he thinks of Rex. There is found family, a mystery of where "wish" comes from and how it works within a mage's system, humor and the most precious little 3yo. There is an entire coven of mage's that need to find their own happiness now that their coven master has his HEA. I do hope there is more to come because I need to meet the men Sailor and Ike mate with. I also want to read about Vince growing up and coming into his own as a familiar and omega, he is a fierce orange kitty that loves his people.

This is a cute and sweet, magical story. Rex is a mage, he has adopted Vince, who was orphaned after his parents died from the rapture. Midnite is a cat familiar, they are rare. He never knew what he was until he was grabbed off the street at 16 and sold to humans. Rex is sent on a mission to stop a human that is trafficking magical creatures and finds Nite, tho at first he thinks he’s just a cat, he decides to take Nite home to Vince, hoping the cat can help Vince through his nightmares. Rex quickly learns that Nite is a familiar. Their magic is compatible and their connection is strong. The two start building a bond between them and as a family unit. Nite is a source of information about the rapture and what causes it, wish/stardust, a drug made from the last magic a mage leaves when they die. The pair and Rex’s coven and his dad are trying to stop it. This story takes us on a journey of love, bonds, family and stopping evil magic and drug use. There are so many cute moments with the family unit. Nite is hilarious when he gets cat brain. The writing is well done, the story has everything you could want, love, family, humor, angst, and steamy times.
I don't share details of a book so much as how much I love them so here goes... I love how Lilo writes I just want to spend time in her brain (I know weird) but her thinking and writing are amazing. I fell in love with this story from the beginning and to read about big strong alpha adopt a child (whose parents died because of the rapture) and instantly become a dad i fell in love with the story it melted my heart. I love how much Rex made sure Midnight(Nite)had every opportunity to say yes and to be who he is. This book was so well written it could have stopped at the halfway point but oh no Lilo had more for us and it never once felt forced this story flowed so well I cannot wait for the next one. They got their HEA but it also feels like HFN she can write cliff hangers that leave you satisfied. I may have been given this book as a ARC reader but this is my true review and like I said get the book you won't be disappointed
At Nite is the first book in the Red Sky series. This is my first book by this author and it did a wonderful job at world building for me. There's an edge to the magic in this world. I'd include a couple trigger warnings because Nite is rescued from being kept in animal form after being kidnapped when young and traded against his will, along with implied sexual requirements from his owners.
While the grittiness is definitely there, this book was also adorable. Vince was a toddler that easily stole the hearts of his caregivers (and his readers). Nite purred and snarked and was otherwise amazing. Rex was determined to do the right thing by both of these two people he rescued. There's a lot to love in this story.
Trigger Warning: person trafficking/shifter slavery, and referenced attempted sexual assault.
It was... okay. It started out nice enough and I was able to ignore the subtly "weird" style of writing (still can't pinpoint why it felt different in the first place) but it got a bit too, dunno, perfect? Mushy? Dramatic, almost? Also, Mpreg. Because having a baby with a guy would met a month ago is The Way to go. The world had some good bones but overall, I slowly lost any and all interest I found at the beginning, as family got rapidly expanded with characters I just didn't actually like and MC was being a bit too good at magic and shook off the trauma a bit too easily and Vince was supposed to make me go "awww" and instead I went more of a *sigh*. It's a story about a mostly-male coven of mage/bikers but the fluff took away any "cool" points the cover might suggest this book has. It's fluffy and I am going to respectfully recommend to people who have different tastes than I.
I recently read a fantastic book by Lilo Quie that I thoroughly enjoyed. The book had elements of humor, romance, sweetness, angst, action, and mystery. The main characters, Rex and Midnight (Nite), were a great pair. Rex saved Nite without realizing that he was his mate or even a familiar. Nite had a difficult life after being kidnapped and sold to various masters, and he was grateful to have a fresh start with Rex. The attraction between them was evident from their first meeting, and it carried on until the end of the story. Despite their troubled pasts, they were able to find balance and achieve a happy ending. Overall, Lilo Quie did not disappoint with this book, and I always look forward to reading her work.
This is a fun new story/series, although it does include some darker themes (forced servitude, person trafficking, death of parents, imprisonment). For me, sweet Vince, caring. responsible Rex, and sassy, snarky Midnight more than offset any angst. However, if you have triggers, do be aware. I have been a fan of Lilo's since I discovered the Forsaken Few series. I love the way they write caring alphas and how they give omegas back their power and right to self-determination. This book ends satisfactorily for the main couple, but larger issues remain to be carried on in future books. I am looking forward to Book 2.

This was a great premise, but unfortunately it didn’t deliver.
The whole “motorcycle club/mages” mashup doesn’t work at all. Not because it is a bad idea (sounds actually quite cool), but because the author doesn’t expand on neither background before trying to mesh them. There isn’t enough motorcycle and there isn’t enough magic. What there there actually is a very weird plot about a magical drug and family conspiracy.
Honestly, making the protagonist the son of the big dick mage leader was kind of a shoot in the foot. Why do are these guys living in rundown motel rooms, being shady magical mercenaries for money and generally doing the scruffy MC thing if the leader is basically loaded and really powerful? Like I said, it’s another instance of both backgrounds not mashing well.
I liked At Nite by Lilo Quie. It's the first book of the Red Sky series. I enjoyed Nite and Rex's story. I loved their chemistry and their hot scenes. I also loved Vinny and how quickly he got attached to Nite. I loved how Rex modified Nite's cat collar to give him back his claws after his previous owner had him declawed. I liked how it affected both his cat form and his human form. The story does seem to have a series arc in addition to the storyline plot, so I look forward to reading the next book to learn more about the stardust and who the new producer will be.

Exciting! Nite, is a cat familiar stuck in his cat form by a collar. Rex, probagionary covenmaster has his hands full. On top of that, he takes in Vince a toddler nobody wants. Lilo, has another hit series startiing up. The characters make her stories. Vince is adorable. Nite is sassy and fun. Rex is a gem succeeding at being everything to everyone. Lots going on, good exciting adventure. The whole cast of characters is fun. Good story, good flow.Well done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The house cat shifter/mage found family omegaverse romance that you didn’t know you needed.
I’ve never been one for rating based purely on vibes, but let me tell you this was a five out of five vibe check. I don’t know if it’s my love of black cats or omegaverse or shifters in general but I absolutely loved this book.
The shifted cat adorableness was clearly written by someone who loves these tiny dictators and writes cat habits incredibly well. Nite spends a good chunk of the book in his shifted form and his cat habits and personality are hilarious, adorable, and accurate.
Not the spiciest of spicy books but the scenes we do get are delightfully hot.
Be warned that this is omegaverse with its heats, slicks, and mpregs. I know that isn’t everyone’s tea.
I enjoy the authors writing style. I'm always immediately pulled into the story and unable to put the book down. This book was no different. I enjoyed learning more about the MCs and want to learn more about the supporting characters. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
Lilo Quie is an amazing world builder and she has done it again with this new series with familiars, magic, motorcycles, bad guys, babies, bad drugs and mages. Midnight and Rexford make a great couple and like Ms Quie I love the vision in my mind of Nite in cat form snuggled up in Rex’s leather jacket as they ride a motorcycle.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. I really like this new universe of mages and familiars. I liked how Nite gets to find love and family with Rexford after many years of abuse. Nite is special and I like how it is him that finds a way to stop the Stardust.
I really loved this book. It was such a fun read and great beginning to a new series. Great world building and wonderful characters. Falling in love with sweet little Vince was easy. I loved the dynamic between Rex and Nite. Their first meeting was kind of adorable and that was it for me. I was completely hooked. I can't wait for the next book in this series. 5 stars.
This book was so amazing! All the time spent in cat form for Nite, plus all the cat mannerisms when not in cat form… everything was so adorable and it was also a pretty funny book. It had some themes that could actually be pretty dark, but they were handled in a light way (not in a disrespectful way though). The book was exactly what I needed.
I loved this book. What a wonderful start to the series. Great world building, lovable side characters and the main MCs were fantastic. I especially loved Nite, so cute and snarky and awesome. Can’t wait for the next book.
This is a new to me author and I will be reading more from them. This is a great start to a series that I will definitely be watching for. I loved the characters and the story, can't wait to see what comes next.
I loved this story so much. I don't read too many mage stories but once I started this one it kept me turning pages. Rex and Nite are great characters and Vinnie is adorable. I wanted more for sure! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
The magic system was interesting but confusing. And there were a few important plot threads left unexplained with no sequel in sight at the moment. And the romance was lukewarm at best. But I likes Nite and Vince so that was a positive.
