Being Dead

The day I died was interesting. It’s vivid, like it just happened, but maybe not.

That’s something else that’s kind of whacky. When you’re dead, you lose all sense of time. You know how when you wake up from a dream and you can’t decide if it’s day or night or dawn or dusk, or if you have to get up for work, or maybe it’s a week-end and you can sleep as long as you want? It’s like that. I couldn’t tell you what time it is, or the day of the week, or even the season. I can’t even tell you what year it is. I might have died yesterday, or a month ago, or decades. Being dead is kind of like dreaming, only it makes more sense.

Have you ever wondered what would happen to you after you were dead? Would you still have memories? If you did then what would you remember? Would it be everything or just snippets of information here and there?

In this short story the author gets inside the head of a recently deceased young man and shows us the memories he has, the events and people he remembers. We don't get to know his name, but he introduces us to a woman, Sean, who he believes was his wife. She was definitely his girlfriend at some point in the past.

He remembers meeting her, he remembers being at a baseball game, and he recalls a particular erotically charged visit to a museum.

In such a short story the author poses so many questions - Who exactly is Sean? What happened to her? And more importantly, what happened between them that, on the day he died, he was not with her?

This story had me wanting more, wanting the answers to those questions. I imagine it, in the future, as possibly the last chapter of a full length story. Hint hint Nick!

What a unique read! As always, Nick Santa Rosa has really made us think and left us room to wonder. This is one of my favorite authors for the sheer fact that all of his books are beyond the average book you pick up today. Nick has managed to fit a novels-worth of imagination into a novella. Usually novellas are lacking in some aspect but he leaves nothing out.

OK... to those of you used to reading play-by-play, color-in-the-lines stories you may at first be a little alarmed at the detail he leaves out. Honestly though, it is not left OUT, it is left to YOU! I swear I've said it on every review for NSR BUT I love, love, LOVE that he allows me to use my head and often times leaves me "hanging"! Don't let that worry you, give it a chance... you'll like being in command of your own imagination. Promise!

I'm not a big reader of short stories/novellas, but a friend suggested I check Nick out. I was very pleasantly surprised. the story is intense, thoughtful, gives you enough detail yet allows you to fill it out to what you like, your terms. I really enjoyed this and will be reading more of his stories.
