An engaging romantic suspense. Multiple POVs from both good and bad characters keep you engaged in the suspense aspect of the story.

Atlanta has a man going around killing men who have abused women. Detective Leigh McBride joins a FBI task assembled to catch him as a liaison and is partnered with FBI Agent J.T. Noble.

Leigh and J.T. carry around a heavy load of baggage from their past that has prevent them from seeking or believing in relationships. They find themselves attracted to each other but even if they can work through their emotional issues, Leigh's nightmare was just released from prison with revenge on his mind and J.T. has just returned home. With so much going on Leigh and J.T. have their work cut out for them both personally and professionally.

I really liked this author’s voice in her writing. She keeps you captivated and interested in the story from beginning to end.

Special Agent J.T. Noble and Detective Leigh McBride are great characters with a lot of emotional baggage. J.T has issues with abandonment and alcoholism, and he’s convinced that the disease is hereditary and refuses to ever marry and start a family. If there are three things J.T. can’t stand, they are drunks, liars and bad mothers. He is a man of few words and has a (cute) habit of talking in four word sentences. He keeps to himself mostly, but still shares an easy camaraderie with his boss and colleagues at work. Outside of work, he is more of loner. His evenings are spent trying to hunt down his wayward mother as a favor to his grandmother.

Leigh keeps her ugly past a secret from everyone; not out of shame, but out of self-preservation. She is a single mother working hard to provide the best life she can for Ethan. Her unconditional love for her son shows throughout the entire story. Then her past comes back to haunt and taunt her, and it’s time to open up to her colleagues. One in particular.

As a couple, I loved J.T. and Leigh together. When Leigh received phone calls at work that wiped the professionalism right off her face, J.T. became both intrigued and protective, but he didn’t interfere or push her for answers. His non-judgmental, non-pushy persona drew Leigh in even deeper, including me. I loved J.T.’s vulnerable side; fearing that Leigh would want nothing to do with him if she ever got a glimpse of his past. It was the classic case of one not feeling good enough for the other despite evidence to the contrary. Leigh was a tough cookie. Yes, she was afraid a lot in this story, but who wouldn’t be? She never backed down from the challenges presented to her and even broke some of her own rules for a chance at happiness. In short I found her quite admirable.

The action in this story has equal face time with the romance, and that is really what kept my interest. The true villain of the story would make the blood freeze in your veins. Some of the descriptions of what he intended for Leigh…cringe-worthy. The story unfolded and flowed well with a few moments that made my breath hitch, and the romance progressed at a believable pace. I did feel a little let down in one particular scene because I felt the bad guy got what he deserved a little too easily. The Holy Crap moment didn’t come to pass, unlike in Green-Eyed Doll. On the other hand I could understand if the author decided not to put the heroine through any more unnecessary trauma.

This was my second romantic suspense novel by Jerrie Alexander, and she is now one of my go-to authors for semi-creepy plots à la Criminal Minds with a side of sizzling romance. Her stories are usually told from multiple POVs, usually the hero, heroine and the villain, and I’ve found that I enjoy being able to see inside their minds. Not only do I feel more connected to the hero and heroine, but when the POV switches to the villain, you get chills just knowing what the main characters are going to eventually face. I highly recommend The Last Execution or The Green-Eyed Doll .

Favorite lines:

The heat from her fury hadn’t been aimed at him, but he was tempted to check for blisters.

~*~
“Know this. I’ll never intentionally hurt you.” He released her hand and walked out the door.

“But I’m afraid you will – unintentionally – someday,” Leigh whispered to the empty room.

~*~
“Stop undressing me with your eyes.”

“I don’t think so. Your blush is sexy.”

“Don’t start with the three and four word sentences.” She dropped her voice where only he heard. “You didn’t have trouble talking in grownup terms last night.”

He choked on a sip of coffee.

~*~

My rating: 4 to 4.5

3.5 stars.

3.5 stars.

I read the book a couple of days go and the feeling I have is that the romance was nothing remarkable but the suspense was very attractive.
It has been a good story although it has not been anything out of this world. Interesting and risky the views that the author offers us, they made me think about what is right and what is wrong, what can be justified and what cannot. The line between good and evil is uncomfortably thin sometimes.

We have a heroine (Leigh) who knows what it is that someone steals your decisions and your dignity from you. She knows what it is to recover and succeed in spite of the prejudices of those who are unable to respect any opinion different from their own. I have loved this character. She has convinced me, and that is not easy.
The hero has not been so original but has been realistic. He also has a devastating past that defines him as a person. He has not managed to overcome it and the baggage he drags sometimes drowns him and does not let him live the present. But Leigh has strength and courage for both of them.

Then we have the point of view of the bad guy. It has not been novel, quite the contrary. Sometimes has been repetitive and tiring. The guy is a psycho. But the author gives us no more explanation than that he is so from birth.

And then we have the bold executor ´s POV. It has been interesting, conflictive and brave. Because who would not feel identified with him? But then, there is that thing called conscience and our own perception of good and evil. I know perfectly well which side I would be in, but it is such a controversial personal decision that I would rather leave it to myself. ;)

It is available in KU. I do not know if I should recommend it (I never recommend a book which I had given it less than 4 stars) but in this case I think I would make an exception.

Open the first page and step into the chilling world of Jerrie Alexander's book, The Last Execution.....

This book started out with a bang, literally. It's Tuesday, April 20, at 9:15 a.m. and Doyle Preston has just shot a police officer. A little over twenty-four hours later, we are in an FBI office as Detective Leigh McBride makes her entrance. She is beautiful and extremely professional, sent to work with this task force as a liaison to capture a deadly and dangerous sniper.

Partnered with Special Agent J.T. Noble, there is not only an immediate attraction between them, but a genuine "like" between them the entire time. I found this very endearing. The author really takes her time with building up the relationship and letting it develop as it should, and it makes you feel like you are there, seeing it all as it unfolds.

J.T. and Leigh are good people, but they have pasts that haunt them. Neither one is looking for love, but sometimes love has a way of finding you when you least expect it. These are two characters that desperately need each other, and they are so perfect for one another that it touches your heart.

At the same time though, there is a lot of danger and excitement going on. Time is running out as they work hard to catch the sniper. Not to mention, someone from Leigh's past comes back to haunt her. It's the very person that changed her life to begin with, making her afraid to love. Both J.T. and Leigh have to overcome a lot to find their way, but the attraction between them is so strong and powerful it helps the other one to heal.

Writing a romantic suspense is not easy. It takes a good, solid plot with a lot of heavy research. It also has to be thrilling and intense, and written by a good author with a strong ability to build you up to an explosive completion. Jerrie Alexander has went above and beyond these expectations with The Last Execution.

Not only does she give you a full, action-packed suspense, but she delivers an incredible love story as well. Definitely a five-star read!

This was really good. I had to stay up late just to finish this.

There is a vigilantly killer on the loose, who is killing men who have slipped through the cracks. Their crimes are bad but not what you would originally think. The FBI task force is on the case and has brought in Homicide detective Leigh McBride to help with the case. This is when Leigh and FBI J.T meet and its a rocky start. They want to catch this killer and yet they don't know what to make of each other ( they are partners) and make a lot of assumptions about each other.

First off their romance took a long time. There were issues upon issues with these two. J.T has physical and emotional scars and doesn't let anyone get to close where as Leigh has her own demons and he is out to get her. In fact not just her but her family as well. In fact this book was two parts. One part the vigilantly killer and the other part Leigh's ex who is out for revenge. When J.T realizes that Leigh has been hurt he starts to open up more and he feels the desire to protect her. But Leigh is a tough cookie. One minute she breaks down and cries and then is over her pity party and squares up her shoulder lifts her chin and is pissed and ready to take on whatever comes her way. She is hard and yet soft. And course J.T is completely confused by her and doesn't know what to make of her. I swear it was like they both were second guessing and assuming things all the time, which leads to a lot a hurt feeling and anger. If they would have just talked it would have saved a lot of time.

I loved how you have the POV of the vigilantly killer, Leigh's ex, Leigh and J.T. It was interesting to learn the reasons behind all the killing. By the end with so much going on and I'm not kidding it was a nonstop problems, one after another. It was all wrapped up nice and neat in the end.

As most of you know I don’t normally read and review too many suspense novels. I’ve never been a person into the John Grisham and Dan Brown kinda suspense/ thriller books. But, when Jerrie asked me to review another of her books I couldn’t pass it up. I’m so glad I didn’t. The Last Execution takes us on a wild ride through Atlanta chasing a vigilante sniper. We soon learn that it’s not just the sniper we have to worry about. We must also face Leigh’s ex-boyfriend/rapist/stalker. With two villains comes two parallel storylines held together by JT and Leigh. For most writers this would be a very tricky task to pull off. Not only does Jerrie give us the view points of Leigh and JT but she also puts us in the minds of the vigilante and the rapist out for revenge. Reading this review you may be thinking this could get to be a complicated read. Don’t doubt there were times I had a take a small breather and recap for myself who was who and what they were doing. But that is to be expected in such a complex story. It wasn’t just the suspense that was well-managed but the love story was built-in very genuinely and believably. It would have been very easy for the love story to have just been thrown into the mix, but Jerrie weaves it throughout the story with wonderful fireworks and climaxes (pun intended :) ). I also loved that the characters and storyline was so believable. I felt that Leigh’s character, though weepy with JT, pulled off what a modern woman working in a law enforcement position would do and how she would act. Also, the story of the vigilante sniper I think was so real it could have been pulled from the headlines. Overall, The Last Execution is one book you are going to want to snatch up. Once you read it you will want to read more by Jerrie Alexander. She is easily becoming one of my favorite suspense writers!

Who doesn’t love the vigilante who does justice when the police can’t do anything? Well I for one do, so I was really excited when I started reading this book. The blurb drew me in and I couldn’t wait to start reading it.

Overall, the characters were extremely well written. You could tell who was who just by the way they were talking. Being able to write an innocent woman and then switch to a sociopath is an amazing skill. One that Jerrie was able to complete without any issues.

My only complaint about this book was the switching of characters. There were 4 main speaking characters of this book, and there was constant switching between the 4 of them. Although it was interesting to a degree, it was also kind of annoying as well.

The story line though, I couldn’t put it down once I started it. It was almost as if I HAD to keep reading in order to find out what was going to happen next. Watching the agents trying to figure out what was going on, and trying to catch the bad man, it was amazing. Then being able to watch as Leigh was able to find her inner strength and move past what had happened to her. Seeing both Leigh and J.T. learning to open their hearts, it was great.

There were parts of this book were I couldn’t figure out what was going to happen next, and some parts were it made complete sense what was going on.

I would recommend this to many of my friends.

The Last Execution grabbed me from the first time I read the description. I admit I am sucker for romantic suspense and well men-in-uniform is a bonus. Jerrie Alexander didn't disappoint for me. She is definitely going on my must read for future books.

The Last Execution is well written with characters that face situations that a reader can relate to on some level whether it has happened to you or not. The heroine, Leigh, is trying to make it in a man's world after past issues make her a media sensation that doesn't play well with her career. And our hero has his own past issues that he uses as a shield that needs to be cracked.

Jerrie Alexander really takes these characters and makes you love them every step of the way. you can feel their pain and joy as they are faced with situations we can only hope to never be faced with. As Leigh works to help the FBI find a serial killer, her family is put into harms way more than once by someone who doesn't want her to live. All the twists and suspense really make The Last Execution a book that is hard to put down. I highly recommend this to anyone that likes imperfect characters simply working to make it through day to day, and enjoys some suspense with your romance.

Riveting, Romantic, Expertly Crafted -- I read this author's first book, The Green-Eyed Doll, and LOVED it. Now with this offering, she's on my auto-buy list! The way Ms. Alexander writes suspense has me literally tense and holding my breath as I'm reading. Only I'm so engrossed in the story, I don't realize it until I've finished the passage. The romance is seamless in the story and it heightened the tension for me. J.T. is my kind of hero! And I love the fact that Leigh is the only one who really gets him. The romance between them absolutely sizzles. Both have complicated pasts. Neither feel like they can trust anyone. Just like her first book, I couldn't stop reading until I'd found out how the story ended. And she sure didn't disappoint there either. I love the twists and turns I've come to expect from this author. The suspense is beyond intense. And she can write a bad guy like nobody's business. You can bet I'll be on the lookout for this author's next book!!

This book was fantastic! It's been a while since I read a book where one of the antagonists is also sympathetic. Very, very interesting as I found myself almost rooting for that individual.

There were a variety of characters, but I never felt lost, and they definitely added to the story. I liked how Leigh's son supported her role, but he wasn't on every single page.

JT was HOT! I love a sexy, take charge hero and he didn't disappoint. The fact that he had issues he needed to work through as well as set-backs along the way made the book not only more believable, but definitely held my interest (I lost many hours of sleep because of this story. LOL)

In summary, a super read if you're in the mood for intrigue and great chemistry! :)

Jerrie Alexander's clean prose style swept me into her well-paced romantic-suspense. Her compelling characters are flawed and wholesome in all the right ways, the kind of people you'd like to have as friends. A talented writer her turn of phrase captures every moment:
"Seconds turned into an eternity as life shifted to a crawl."
"Originally, the idea of working with her hadn't bothered him, but the lady had secrets. And secrets could get you killed."
The plot had me reading every word and turning the pages as quickly as I could. I almost burned our dinner.
The Last Execution is an awesome thriller written by a great storyteller.

The Last Execution is a real page-turner. I read until late in the night to see what happened to the characters I loved. J.T. and especially Leigh, the main characters, have more than their share of trouble, but their motives for their present actions are plausible. I sympathized with most of the characters (but not all :-). The writing is strong too, and the author's depictions of Atlanta neighborhoods make me think she's spent time there.
Ms. Alexander knows how to deliver a story. I can’t wait for her next one.

When Homicide Leigh McBride is assigned to a serial killer case as a liaison to the FBI, she knows this is not an opportunity given lightly. Assigned to partner with Agent J.T. Noble, he is standoffish but there is a part of him that she can relate too.

J.T knows Leigh's personal life is not his business, he has spent his whole life keeping people at a distance but he sees that there is more to her than just a detective. J.T. has no idea about the horrific past Leigh has, nor the fact that the source of that past has returned intent on harming her. Even though he proclaims to himself he can't give her what she needs, he can't stay away.

With a killer who doesn't seem to want to slow down and J.T. toying with the idea of a possible future with Leigh and her son, they both are finding their lives are spiraling but the one consistent is each other. That is if both can make peace with the demons that still haunt them.

THE LAST EXECUTION

Thriller, romance and suspense with a couple of different stories going on from the beginning. Leigh and JT are hunting a vigilante killer together, while both are dealing with some big personal problems at the same time. A lot of action in this book with characters that pull you in.

This story kept me interested with it's twists and turns. The characters all have their own individual issues to work through and when they work together, they are stronger for it. The premise of a sniper targeting women abusers is a smart turn for the author to take...abuse touches many people. You almost catch yourself rooting for the guy. The story takes another twist and the author takes you into places that make you think about what is really going on. The romance is woven in subtly then gives you a big "wham!" What a great book! I'm looking forward to more from this author.

J.T. and Leigh are paired as partners when Leigh was assigned to the FBI as a liaison from the APD, both had past that they didn't want others to know about. This story has a lot of twists and turns, suspense and romance and their past are made know to each other, will that be the end to their partnership? Read this wonderful story from Jerrie Alexander, it will not disappoint, and will hook you from the start.

The Last Execution was a fantastic story. Full of suspense, drama, romance, & the most adorably written little boy who has a huge part in this story. There is the usual trust issues between the H & H, romance, and a vgilante killer, who, even though you may not want to, you could find yourself actually liking just a little bit.

Actually really enjoyed this romantic suspense novel. Sometimes I come across hidden little gems. This was my favorite type of RS. I love them to have alpha men, strong heroines, suspenseful plot, and steamy scenes. No insta-hookup here. It takes a while for J.T. To break down Leigh’s defenses. Will definitely read another by this author.
