Specific examples makes it worth a read. Even pros forget to do the basics, when there are hundreds of basics.

This book is written with examples mostly used in hospital. It's a quite good summary for the emergency and implementation of checklist in medical service. Especially for today, with the field of bio-medical developed so fast, the checklist will help surgeons reduce the mistakes that can be avoided.

It is quite insightful for daily use too.

However, I will say, there is much more for the author to write in other industries. The author, Atul, didn't know (or he know but didn't mention) that in aerospace industry, engineers are already using software to check the status of rocket before launch (SpaceX), and try to automate the entire checking process. The F-35, most advanced stealth plane, are also automate the status checking/reporting process.

There is reason to automate this checking process. Equipment is so complicated, it is so hard to train large numbers of engineers and make them qualify to accomplish the task of checking machine status.

While other industries already implemented automatic status checking functions, Atul is still call on doing the checklist for surgery or treatment. It makes me feel that they are falling behind the world. But it can be opportunities for other startups in bio-medical industry.

Anyway, thanks Atul.

In this book, Dr Gawande attempts to convince us of the importance of adopting checklists. He walks us through the stages of composing his surgical checklist (under WHO umbrella) and afterwards of the challenges and successes in adopting it, which is much more entertaining than merely reading his NEJM paper. He reflects on the advantages of using checklists in other fields than medicine, including aviation and finance. This is a very smooth read; I was at first skeptical on how Dr Gawande was able to write a whole book about checklists, but I rather enjoyed going over it. I specifically liked the "Checklist for checklists" at the end of the book, which can be used to come up numerous checklists for multiple uses.
