In the penultimate book of the second series of Deadlocked, the High Rollers struggle to find their way after an enormous loss. They fell into the trap of a madman and the horde is closing in even as the town burns around them. Meanwhile, Hero is dealing with his contraction of what is known as the Tempest Strain, a virus capable of infecting any mammal. He knows that if the virus gets out, it could threaten every species on the planet, and he's ready to make the ultimate sacrifice if he has to.
However, the true secret about to be uncovered is what happened in the past, back when Charles Reagan formed the High Rollers. What none of them know is just what role he unwittingly played in a war raging between two factions of the organization that released the zombie plague. Before the final page, a new enemy is revealed that changes everything and the heroes will find themselves at a crossroads they'd always hoped to avoid.
Yet another truly awesome instalment of the deadlocked series. This one has us bounding back and forth throughout the apocalypse time line and rushed along at breakneck speed. What a series this is, I just hope the eighth and final instalment is as good as the rest 🧟♂️.
Ok, I've held off commenting on the bad grammar in any of these books thus far.... but did I really just see "He COULD OF...." in a sentence in a published novella? Really?? I mean, I could HAVE understood if maybe it was a character speaking, and that CHARACTER had bad grammar, but no. Not the case. Also, I'm not sure there has been a single correctly used adverb ending in -ly in the entire series. It's like the author has something against adding -ly to the end of a modifying word, or using the correct past tense of a word like "pat" or "skid"...
Decent books, overall, but there are a handful of plot holes you could drive an 18-wheeler through, and the grammar has gotten on my nerves from page 1. Obviously that hasn't been enough to stop me thus far, and I do intend to finish the series. But geez, man!
The first quarter of this book was awesome, an action packed aftermath of book six's epic conclusion and some intensely intriguing backstory for Annie, Kim and Arthur. After that though, the story slows down a lot. Backstory and exposition, while important for setting up the finale made this entry less enjoyable than others in the series. While it was cool to see Reagan again in flashbacks, and learn his fate it got in the way of the main storyline at the church. Billy on the other hand finally gets some more page time after being sidelined in six, and non-existent in five. Overall this was a necessary entry to connect six and eight, but one I was only too happy to finish.
A lot was revealed in this book, it was back and forth in the time line and I had to think about parts I had read a few chapters before, but it was the most reveling story line for the back stories for a lot of the character's I have grown to love, a lot happens and a few times I had to just stop reading because I felt myself get mad, or had tears in my eyes. But your left with feeling of dread and hope, and if nothing else, if you have read the series up to number 6 you know you'll just have to 7.
While I have decided to finally swear off the zombie genre (except for Walking Dead of course), I had to finish this series. It's an excellent story, told in 8 segments (the next book is the final one). Similar to Walking Dead, it does not revel in the horror aspect of the setting, but delivers strong plots and good character development. It's not just about the shock of blowing zombies' heads off, but how the characters deal with it, day in and out.
Wow....another job well done A.R Wise. I enjoyed this book because it finally went into a little more depth of the characters and focused a little more on the beginning of the apocalypse It was a quick read and I am so very excited and sad to know book 8 will be the last in the series. Great book highly recommend!
Only one more to go so there are some things I thought might be covered in this one, but I guess I'll have to wait and see in the next. Loving it still. But hey, who doesn't love a zombie book?
