Stories from the National Public Radio archives honor America’s national pastime. Stories so compelling you’ll stay in your car to hear them through — even if you’re sitting in your own driveway. Peabody-winning Talk of the Nation host Neal Conan presents tales about the big leagues and the little, the fans in the stands, the players, the history, and the lore.
Highlights include commentaries from some of the game’s most recognized authorities, a look back at some of baseball’s most important figures (Jackie Robinson, Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio), and colorful segments about the game’s unexpected delights, from the Hidden Ball Trick to the "All You Can Eat" option at Dodger Stadium.
Less a “book” and more a collection of audio clips from the NPR archives, “NPR Driveway Moments - Baseball” is a short series of previously published stories on the subject of baseball. The premise behind the book is to create a collection of stories so compelling that you’ll stay in the car just to hear it through to the end. It’s a delightful collection of stories on America’s pastime. This wonderful collection includes commentaries from some of the game's most respected authorities and writers. The book takes a look back at some of the game’s most important figures like Jackie Robinson, Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, and Yogi Berra. It includes some fascinating segments about some of the game's more colorful details, like the art of giving and stealing signs, the infamous hidden ball trick, and even the "All You Can Eat" option at Dodger Stadium. This was such a fun read, and one that I highly recommend for any fan of the game, or anyone interested in great storytelling.
This was a great short audio collection of baseball-related NPR feature stories. Full of intriguing first-hand stories from professional players (including Yogi Berra and Ted Williams among others), broadcasters, and fans alike; it's a must listen for any baseball fan! I didn't want it to end!
The first of the NPR radio stories series that I've heard of - and listened to. Was fun. I'm a baseball fan so liked these short clips. I will pursue other NPR Driveway moments!
obviously this is a sort of niche audiobook, but one of the stories is one i think everyone should know ... mamie "peanut" johnson, a female pitcher who was drafted into the negro league in 1953. 1953! the first woman who was a major league pitcher. the interviewer asks her if she was nervous when she was drafted (at age 18) about being around 'rowdy' boys -- she says "i could get rowdy too." a HERO.
A delightful short audio book which complies various NPR segment stories with baseball legends as well as not-as-well-known players and moments in the game. It was great to listen to some interviews of legends and to hear some of the 'untold' stories of the game. A great listen for any baseball fan. You know it has to be good when they start off with the question of how people, like Cubs fans, can continue to cheer and follow losing teams.
Hey, you know what you are going to get, a collection of often interesting, humorous, unusual short segments that inform and entertain. I was especially taken by the interview with the female professional pitcher. Some segments better than others, but overall a nice grouping. Any baseball fan will likely enjoy it.
My husband, and now my daughter, are both HUGE baseball fans. I am the kind of woman who takes a good book to the game because I think it's about 4 innings too long. This collection helped me to love the game just a little bit and to understand their fan-ness just a little bit more.
