The Lady of Clan MacKinlay

Rate this book
From a renewed feud between clans comes a budding love that threatens to destroy two families.

The Feud

Thirty years ago, when Clan Duncraig and Clan MacKinlay’s bitter feud disrupted any semblance of peace in the region, the king of Scotland decreed a battle to the death. Each clan sent thirty of their best warriors, and with the king as their witness, Clan MacKinlay was decimated.

Niall

When Niall, the brave and honorable son of the chief of Clan Duncraig, travels to his enemy’s castle to investigate MacKinlay cattle grazing on their land, he meets Lady Avelina and sparks fly. Despite their families’ bitter rivalry, a kinship develops between Niall and Avelina, but their path to happily ever after is far from smooth.

Avelina

Overcoming her own anger and bitterness toward Clan Duncraig, Avelina is torn when her passions are awakened by the chief’s son. Her brother, the MacKinlay chief, refuses to acknowledge Niall as anything other than the enemy, forcing Avelina to make decisions that will affect both her and her clan.

Niall and Avelina strive to find happiness amidst the turmoil of war and family loyalties. Will their love be strong enough to overcome the obstacles in their way, or will the feud between their clans tear them apart?

Thirty years ago, a devastating battle nearly wiped out Clan MacKinlay, ending their years-long feud with Clan Duncraig. Now the Duncraig chief’s son, Niall, has been charged with visiting their enemy’s castle to investigate why their cattle are grazing on Duncraig land. There he meets Lady Avelina MacKinlay and their attraction is immediate. Despite their clans’ enemy status, affection grows between Niall and Lina, but their path to s future together is uncertain. Avelina’s brother refuses to see Niall as anything other than an enemy, leaving Avelina with difficult decisions to make as she and Niall fight for their happiness together whilst trying to avoid destroying their families.

This book is definitely helping to pull me out of my reading slump. For the first time in ages, I wanted to stay up and finish it rather than doing something else as part of my night time wind down. I loved that, despite all the different barriers working against Lina and Niall, they never waived. They were straightforward with one another and played no games, just admitted their feelings, and got straight down to fighting to be together. I loved that and wish we got more of it in romance, rather than so many stories relying on misunderstandings and miscommunication. I really enjoyed this couple’s story, but I’m looking forward even more to Kieran’s story now.

Niall and Avelina....now there's a couple who will find a place in your heart! Their clans have been enemies forever, it seems, and having grown up with hatred towards the clan that killed her father, uncle and so many other members of her clan, the last thing Avelina expects is to feel attraction to Niall and vice versa. Yet, when they meet, it's instant mutual attraction and no matter how much they fight it, it's too powerful to resist, even knowing they will probably be ostracized by their clans.

I absolutely adored Niall and I also loved Avelina's character, both so perfect for each other. There are no great battles in their story, it's more about the romance and love between a couple who should never have gotten together but then love works in mysterious ways:) I now look forward to Kieran's story, I can already tell that's going to be a good one!!!

Another very well written enemies to lovers romance which I read in a sitting. Strong believable characters, a well paced story & sizzling chemistry. I loved both Niall & Avelina, their families have been enemies for decades but their attraction & then their growing feelings make them question their long held beliefs. Their journey to a HEA wasn’t easy as they faced opposition from all sides but it did make for an engrossing read & the ending has me impatiently awaiting Kieran’s story

FANTASTIC!!! The Lady of Clan MacKinlay by Cecelia Mecca is the first in her new series Highland Lovers and what a way to begin a new series. Cecelia is one of the most talented authors of today and her books never disappoint. I practically stop breathing until the next book is released, I love them the much. What a story teller. I found this book to be so very well written, original, had wonderful characters, vivid descriptions, had the real feel of the medieval era, a surprise ending and just a true joy to read. I can’t say enough about this book. This story has clan enemies, cattle where they don’t belong, a father that is determine to keep the clan an enemy, an adopted brother who is very supportive, the lost of family in battle, a brother who is loving, a strong women who speaks her mind, being able to shoot an arrow and hit the cent of the target, facing one’s enemy and not feeling hate and falling in love. I am so highly recommending you read this book…as I said it is FANTASTIC!!!

3.5 rounded to 4.
This book is a straightforward, easy to read, enemies to lovers trope with no wicked evil villain or distracting sub plot. They fall in love, they stand up to their families, they get a happily ever after.

That being said, it is a bit more tame than I remember Cecelia Mecca's books being, plot-wise. The plot was thin but direct. I can see how things are being set up to continue through the series but this particular book lacked the stress of a villainous character doing all sorts of nefarious deeds. I appreciated how the issues and misunderstandings between characters were resolved really quickly as well.

I won't call this book boring but I will call it light and easy. I almost gave it 3 stars but I did appreciate what a quick read it was, and the lack of serious stress or angst.

The epilogue was unnecessary, or at least the part that is intended to lead the reader to the next book in the series. It felt entirely forced, and the reader already knows that the character in question was adopted and that there is a mystery around circumstance.

3 steam.

When the king tired of the feud between the Duncraig and MacKinlay clans, he ordered them to meet and fight to the finish. The MacKinlay clan was decimated and, though the fights stopped, the hatred simmered. Years later when Niall, the eldest son of the Duncraig, and his brother Kieran were sent to take care of MacKinlay cattle on Duncraig land, something unexpected and unwanted occurred. Niall and Avelina, sister to the MacKinlay, become quite taken with each other. Will this situation help bring the clans together or will it add to the hatred. Niall and Avelina are strong and headstrong characters. Both are smart and courageous. Their chemistry is obvious the moment they meet. The story is hard to put down. The characters are dealing with a hatred that has existed for several generations. The story has emotion, intrigue, distrust, forgiveness, and a romance with a bit of steam. There is also a hint of mystery in the next book. Awesome!

I Love Returning to Early Scotland Through These Stories!!

Clan Duncraig and Clan MacKinlay had a bitter feud so the king of Scotland decreed a battle to the death. Each clan sent thirty of their best warriors, and with the king as their witness, Clan MacKinlay was decimated.

Now MacKinlay cattle are on Duncraig land. Rather than reinitiate the feud, The chief sends his sons to investigate.

When Niall meets Lady Avelina sparks fly. They are said to be enemies, but each were young when the battle ensued and were not directly involved. Wouldn't it be better to build a bridge between the two clans.

Her brother, the MacKinlay chief, refuses to acknowledge Niall as anything other than the enemy, forcing Avelina to make decisions that will affect both her and her clan.

Love these characters, and the romance that ensues. The reader will feel like they have gone back in time, in the very best way.

Your heart will go out for Niall and Avelina. They are wonderful characters caught up in a clan feud. They are supposed to be sworn enemies but no one told their hearts not to love or their bodies not to desire each other. This seemingly impossible romance will have you on the edge of your seat rooting for the couple who deserve to find love. The book is inspired historical events known as the Battle of the Clans. But young people not involved in the original battle have to suffer the consequences of clans going to war. The writing and the pace are perfect and the passion jumps off the pages. You will feel like you are there in the Highlands with the characters and their friends and families who are also well described. And there are a few surprises along the way too. I cannot wait for the second book in the series!

Enemies, Irresistible Attraction, Confessions:
This author writes deep emotional stories that captures my heart.
I was pretty sure that this story was going to hold my attention with wonderful characters, an emotionally passionate plot, so I prepared myself with a nice pitcher of iced tea, my lady's fan, a tissue box and plenty of time to be totally engrossed and Oh Boy, it was better than I thought.
My emotions were on edge just the same as Niall and Avelina's were throughout this dramatic, ever evolving love story. So many surprises and Woweee the heartfelt confessions had me smiling and then when the shocker came at the end my mind was totally blown and now, I am certainly looking forward to book 2 of this series.

A Duet

The first book in a 2 book series begins with Avelina MacKinlay and Niall Duncraig falling in love while their respective clans are enemies and have been for at least 15 years.
Avelina is the sister of the chief of Clan MacKinlay and Niall is the son of the chief of Clan Duncraig. This could prove to be a sticky situation.
Ewan MacKinlay, the chief, was not in favor of a wedding between the two enemies, nor was the chief of Clan Duncraig.....but love prevailed and at least one of the parties is accepting of the other.
A steamy romance that has a little mystery and a lot of romance with descriptive scenery that makes you feel like you're in medieval Scotland. I'm looking forward to the second book releasing in October.

I really loved this book. At just 200 pages the will they wont they tension was perfect. It wasn't overly dramatic, you fell in love with both characters, and the story was paced perfectly. I really loved how they couldn't stay away from each other despite knowing they should. I love that they weren't fooling themselves about their feelings or jumping to some overly romantic conclusion. The enemies to lover bit felt more like star crossed lovers, but I was giggling and kicking my feet the whole time. When I say this was perfect I mean, this got me out of a week's long reading slump and I am forever grateful. I cannot wait for the second book in the series. I also wish there was a third because I want to know what happens with Ewan.

Anytime you read a book by this author know it will stay with you long after the last page!
We have Niall second to the chief of Clan Duncraig! Lady Avelina aka Lina is the sister of the Laird of Clan Mackinlay! These two clans warred so bitterly when the dispute was settled men from both clans perished! More for Clan Mackinlay than Clan Duncraig!
These two should have never met! As they travel to unravel a mystery Lina and Niall are pulled inextricably toward one another!
Niall makes a decision that once made is irrevocable! Can his clan accept Lina!
Can Lina brother let her go and marry the enemy! Can their fragile bond survive! Stayed up way late! Couldn’t put this one down! Bravo

With her usual amazing attention to history and characters that come off the page, Cecelia has created a story of the that radiates everything loved in medieval stories. Enemies they may be, but the heart know what it wants, even if everyone stands in the way!

When Niall, son of the chief of Clan Duncraig, goes to investigate if cattle from their enemy clan, the McKinley's, is grazing on their land, he meets Lady Avelina, sister of the Clan chief.

Of course any attraction needs to be nipped in the bud, but needs and wants clash as these two cannot deny each other!! Fabulous!

The Lady of Clan MacKinley

The story of Niall and Avelina is quite something. Families separated by hatred caused by a king tired of Clan battles who orders clans Duncraig and MacKinley to fight with each other, leaving the MacKinley Clan decimated. Years later cattle from one clan on the land of the other, add the fact that Niall and Avelina are drawn to each other AND Niall's adopted brother Kieran's past is a bit of a secret makes for a ball of fireworks coming down the pike. This was a book I did not put down and I cannot wait for book two!!

Fabulous Storytelling

Cecelia Mecca never ceases to amaze me. She has a way of writing that does more than pull you in to her stories, she makes you feel like you are a part of them. The best way to sum up Niall and Avelina's story is "the heart wants what the heart wants". Feuding Scottish Clans are no small matter and there was a lot for them to overcome. I enjoyed getting to know these characters and seeing their strength, love, and passion. I cannot wait for the next book.

Wonderful enemies to lovers storyline which grabs you from the first page. What the Duncraig and MacKinlay clans went through in the past affects the current generation in many different ways. When Niall Duncraig and Avelina MacKinlay meet, their attraction is strong, but will they be able to overcome their families hatred and reach for a happy ever after? I was so engrossed in this story that it was quite late into the night when I finished it. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

This is a new series from Cecelia, and what a book to start with, Brilliant read!

The characters were very good, they felt real to me from the beginning and I really enjoyed reading about their journey and how they developed throughout the story.
It was full of contention and excitement from the start, but although they were at odds, there is no violence between enemies, I liked this.
In all I would recommend this book, and look forward to reading the next in the series.

The Lady of Clan MacKinlay is book one in the Highland Lovers Series by Cecelia Mecca. I thought the story started off strong. I enjoyed the attraction that the hero and heroine experienced towards each other. But as the story progressed I wished for more tension and conflict. I thought the MacKinlay chief would have experienced more of a reaction when he discovered his sister was in love with his greatest enemy. Overall, a good romance. There are quite a few steamy scenes which this author is known for. I do look forward to the next book which hints at a deeper mystery for Clan Duncraig.

This is the first in Cecelia’s new series and wow it is off to a fantastic start! Cecelia writes her books to make you feel as if you are involved in the story when she writes. Her characters are strong and her descriptions of the scenery is stop on. In the story you will face elements of suspense, hurt, anger, family feuds and a love between two people who never should have fallen in love. This is a page turner from the start and hard to put down. Was a great read and can not wait for the next book.

what a story! HEA for the win

Niall and Lina pursue their desire knowing it is with obstacles in every aspect of their relationship. Despite this they forge ahead to live the life they want-together.
This story was well thought out and put together. Enough intrigue was added to add to the story and leave us wanting another installment. The romance was superb! Would definitely recommend Cecilia’s books to others if you enjoy HEA they do not disappoint.

A brilliant start to a new series. I love the attraction, love, and passion Niall and Lina shared from first meeting. To defy their family and clans to be together without it being a marriage for alliance was brave on both parts. The book was so good and moves along so fast that the ending snuck up on me. And a heck of an ending it is. I'm afraid to say more because I don't want to spoil anything for other reader. It's definitely a must read. I am looking forward to Kieran's book.

Great start to a new series! The author brings strong characters in Lina and Niall and gives them a strong connection and passion for one another. Can they find happiness with their families dislike of each other? It's well written, moves fluidly and is a terrific story. I'm looking forward to the next book.

I love a love story of warring clans and here we have Clan Duncraig and Clan MacKinlay. Niall and Avelina a great love story of enemies to lovers. Sworn enemies who have an instant attraction, Niall is definitely attracted to her, and soon there heart’s follow. A captivating story of these two enemies trying to protect their clans, but forget to keep their hearts safe. I have voluntarily read and reviewed the captivating story.

Another great story!

Niall and Adelina’s story was quite exciting. Sworn clan enemies seem to see each other in a different way when they first meet. Their story is one of true love, but not an easy task in front of them for their clans to accept it. Their story sweeps you in and keeps you riding the wave of love and understanding. The ends keep you wondering what will happen in the next book in the series.

Mecca really surprised me with this plot! But it wouldn't have worked any other way. You'll fall in love with both the hero and the heroine and pull for them in their impossible situation, even shedding a few tears. Even better: a duet that leaves the reader breathless for the second part without a cliffhanger!

I borrowed this great read on Kindle Unlimited. I loved it from the very beginning. Cecilia always brings each of her characters to life. Kieran, the second brother, is a sweet, all knowing and forgiving brother and really not all that important to the plot until! Now I have to wait until October to find out the All Important answer. Bummer.
