MOON DANCE

Then the unthinkable happens, an attack that changes her life forever. And forever is a very long time for a vampire. Now the world at large thinks Samantha has developed a rare skin disease, a disease which forces her to quit her day job and stay out of the light of the sun. Now working the night shift as a private investigator, Samantha is hired by Kingsley Fulcrum to investigate the murder attempt on his life, a horrific scene captured on TV and seen around the country. But as the case unfolds, Samantha discovers Kingsley isn't exactly what he appears to be; after all, there is a reason why he survived five shots to the head.

THE LOST ARK

Accompanied by the professor's beautiful daughter, archaeologist Faye Roberts, Sam soon stumbles upon a secret stronghold—a base of operation for unleashing hell on earth. Now running for their lives, Sam and company are about to come face-to-face with the greatest archaeological discovery of all time....

THE GRAIL QUEST
Hidden deep within the ancient, mist-covered hills of Glastonbury, England is a secret that could forever change the world. A secret that could help usher in a new age of enlightenment for all mankind. Or so the legend goes...Plagued by months of persistent dreams of King Arthur, Merlin and the Holy Grail, mystery novelist James Dupree finally sets out to England to understand the meaning behind his nightly visions. Upon arriving in Glastonbury, a locale deeply connected to stories of Camelot, Avalon and the Knights of the Round Table, James quickly discovers that not all is as it seems in this quaint little town. There's a raven-haired girl dying of a rare lung disease, knights with swords, and perhaps strangest of all is the man who emerges from the forest...a man who just might be the greatest king Britain has ever seen. Something is happening in Glastonbury, something mysterious and powerful and not-of-this world, and somehow James Dupree is in the thick of it. Mankind is ready for the next great spiritual shift. But to do that, one man, one simple writer, must journey deep into the heart of a mystical land in search of a legendary relic. But there are others who seek the treasure...dark forces who will stop at nothing to keep it for themselves, and end Dupree's quest for good.

I enjoyed these three stories with a supernatural twist.
The first tells of Samantha Moon who had been bitten by a vampire six years previously and was coming to terms with being a mother, wife and P.I. as well as learning to be a vampire in the modern world. The second is the tale of another P.I. who has conversations with God in the local McDonalds. Jim Knighthorse had been a accomplished football player until a bad leg injury during a game robbed him of a professional career and God counsels him over coffee. The second is about another P.I. who is given the case of a missing teenager who turns out to be a vampire slayer. All three were a decent read and I wouldn't hesitate to dip into this author's books again

This is a three-story anthology. All three stories have some paranormal elements. All three main characters have a police officer for a friend, none of them planned to work as private investigators and all of them have a tragic event (an attack in the first case) in the past.

Moon Dance (Vampire for Hire series) has cheating. There, an unhidden spoiler. I don't care. It happens soon in the story anyway. I wish someone warned me before I started reading this. You're welcome.
Six years ago Samatha was attacked by a vampire and she became one too. She left her FBI job and became a PI. At first her husband was supportive, but recently started cheating on her.
She gets hired by a very successful defence attorney to find a person who tried to kill him. The weird thing about the attempt is that he got hit more than once and stayed alive.
What I liked: the chapters are really short so you don't have the feeling of anything being dragged too long (all sixty four of them), the detective who was working on the same case and his family problems (shouldn't be funny, but they are because it's nothing serious) and Samantha's occasional humour when she isn't depressed.
I didn't like her miserable husband and his cowardice, but this is just my preference. It is not connected to the story. There was no chemistry between Kingsley and Samantha and yet we are supposed to accept it. Oh, and her online friend? That was plain silly. The only thing she can't do is see herself in a mirror and eat. She uses a lot of sun cream when outside during the day. Yes, day. And she can fly.

***3.5 stars*** Dark Horse (Jim Knighthorse series) consists of sixty five short chapters. I liked this story more than the other two.
A girl was killed and her boyfriend was accused of the murder. Jim Knighthorse, a former football player and now a PI, believes someone wanted to set the boy up. Knighthorse too has a lot of personal issues (found his mother murdered when he was ten, got hurt while playing football and lost the chance to be a star, has a drinking problem). He did some really unexpected things which completely makes this story different from a lot of PI stories I've read so far.
Nobody is really interested in the truth: did Derrick really kill Amanda. She was white, he is not and that seems to be enough for everyone. I liked this one more than Moon Dance. By the time you get to the end you are so furious at people around him and not just because of all the racism.
Most of the reasons why I like this one are connected to the main character.
The only paranormal element here is a bum or God Knighthorse often talks to.

The Vampire With the Dragon Tattoo (Spinoza)
An old lady comes to a private investigator to hire him to find a missing girl. The old lady seems to believe that the missing girl is a vampire slayer. It's so short I couldn't get into it properly.

While I am not interested in Samantha from Vampire for Hire series, I could read more about Jim Knighthorse.

I thoroughly enjoyed 'Rainy Nights'. Each novel brings you into three different stories yet intertwine with each other throughout each series.

'Moon Dance' is book one from the series 'A Vampire For Hire'. I loved the storyline and it's not your average vampire read. I was pulled in from the beginning. The way the story played out was awesome. I loved the characters. Samantha is one kick-ass lead. I love her humor and her outlook on her new life. A great read. Definitely a series I'll follow. Well written.

'Dark Horse' is the first book from 'A Jim Knighthorse' series. I loved the storyline and how it played out. The characters were great, even with Jim being so egotistical, yet he has a great sense of humor. I look forward to reading more of this series.

'A Vampire With the Dragon Tattoo' is not what I expected, it was better. I loved the storyline and how Spinoza's character completely took me by surprise. I kind of expected him to be a little more passive, yet, you get in his way when he's on a case and he breaks out his inner fighter. I liked how he commits himself to a case. The characters are great. I would love to see this novel turn into a series as well. But I'll take what I can get. Well written.

Overall, 'Rainy Nights' is a great add to your tbr list. Recommended read.

Rainy Nights is made up of three of J. R. Rains novels.
Moon Dance features Samantha Moon a vampire who is also a private detective.
In the book she is hired by Kingsley Fulcrun to find out who had tried to kill him.
The second book is Dark Knight which features Jim Knighthorse.
In the story he is hired to find out who killed student Amanda Peterson, as it is believed that her boyfriend has been wrongly arrested for the murder.
The final book is The Vampire With The Dragon Tattoo and it is the first in the Spinoza Trilogy.
In the story Spinoza is hired by Gladys to find Veronica who has disappeared.
All three stories in the collection are easy to read and thoroughly enjoyable.I have a feeling I will find myself returning to this book as I really did enjoy it.
I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to look into the author's work, and if like me you enjoy it you can go on to read further books from the three series the books come from.

Rainy Nights is my first exposure to J.R. Rain's writing. I really enjoyed all three of the stories and thought they were a good introduction to each of his series. I also loved the humor and banter between the main characters in each of the books. I am definitely going to read the rest of the books in each series. Give it a try, I think you'll like it, too.

Rainy Nights

This is the first book I've read by this author and I'm hooked! I love his writing style, the way nothing is ever taken too seriously. All the characters are great, like Jim Knighthorse's neighbor, he was great and so oblivious! That was my favorite story out of all three.

To be honest, I only read the first of this three-in-one collection. I enjoyed Moon Dance, the story about vampire detective Samantha. It was hard not to get caught up in her life as she tried to juggle her job with her children, while her marriage was falling apart. For some reason I just couldn't stick with the other two stories, Dark Horse and the Vampire With the Dragon Tattoo.

Moon Dance - A total unusual take on vampires. Samantha Moon, a private investigator who works nights and although a vampire has remained for 6 years with her normal human family doing everyday things like picking kids up from school. Good story but a little unbelievable.

Dark Horse - A decent detective story.

DARK HORSE. Hard--boiled detective in the style of Mike Hammer. Twisting plot with a pleasing mixture of humor. A real page turner. Highly recommended.

Read Moon Dance.

Reading. The Vampire With the Dragon Tattoo. Did not enjoy the main character at all.

Supernatural Mysteries

This sampler features three full length novels from three different series by the author. All three books are mysteries with supernatural elements. I think I will be buying the sequels soon because all three books are fun reads.

Another great book by J.R. Rain. I love his style of writing and dry sense of humor. His Knighthorse series is very similar to Robert Parker's Spenser.
