I loved Primal Shift Episode One and I was waiting with baited breath to see where Hayes took his unique twist on the post-apocalyptic genre. And I was delighted to find that he just dragged me further down the rabbit hole.
In this latest instalment, the characters seem to come alive on the page; I love the fact that the story examines how people from all walks of life are dealing with the 'natural disaster' that has wiped the memories of all but a few. I enjoy the heart-in-mouth scenarios that Hayes seems to take delight in pushing his characters in to, and I particularly love finding that I'm surprised by their reactions.
They feel real. I can relate to them, I can empathise with them, and I certainly love-to-hate some of them. The risk with this type of multi-perspective book is that a reader will want to know more about one particular character than another, or will care less about the next. With this book and it's uniquely crafted characters, this isn't the case. I find it difficult to phrase, but I think how I feel is that I'm totally engrossed in one character, and their chapter ends. Immediately I am thrown back into the fray with another character, and I totally forget the one I have been engrossed in only moments before. It carries on in this style until I come back across the first character and my brain rejoices with a little 'OMG I get to find out what happens next with YOU!!', which continues until I'm left almost breathless at the end of the book, salivating for the next mouthful (or book, in this case).
If you haven't read Episode One, go and do so. I dare you not to NEED to read the next bit straight away.
