Cost of Repairs #3

Weight of Silence

Rate this book
Gavin Perez is fully aware that he's kind of a cliché. He works a dead-end job, shares a trailer with his waitress mom, has an abusive, absentee sperm donor, and he's poor. So color him shocked when middle-class, white-bread Jace Ramsey agrees to hang out with him. Granted, Gavin is trying to make it up to Junior McHottie for dumping a bowl of cranberry sauce on him at Thanksgiving dinner. And boy does Jace forgive him, over and over again…until he goes back to college and stops returning Gavin's calls. Oh well. Life goes on.

After living through the semester from hell, Jace Ramsey doesn't want to do anything more complicated than sleep through winter break. He has no idea how to come out to his family, never mind tell his parents he wants to quit college. He also has zero plans to socialize while he’s home, but Gavin's ready forgiveness draws them back together—both in and out of bed. But Gavin is out, and Jace knows he won't be able to stay in the closet much longer.

Gavin isn't good enough for Jace—at all—but Gavin simply can’t stay away from the younger, haunted man. Something happened to Jace during those weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Jace trusts Gavin with his body. He might even trust Gavin with his heart. But can he trust that a devastating secret that’s eating him up inside won’t destroy everything—and everyone—he loves?

NOTE: This book was previously published under the same title. It has updated cover art and has been re-edited. 3700 words of new content has been added, including a brand-new epilogue.

The MC's were a bit younger in this book but the drama was just as good. And sad.

It was a cute and sweet coming of age story with really sweet MC's that I totally adored. I liked that they were attached to the other character's we have come to know and love. I was a smidge worried that this story would feel alienated from the rest of the books and was happy that wasn't the case.

Jace and Gavin meet by literally running into each other. It was quite the splash. The splash of some kind of cranberry concoction that got all over Jace's nice white button up shirt. Gavin gets creative fixing Jace's shirt while Jace spends that time blushing. Later they talk a bit more and agree to hang out.

Gavin is comfortable in his skin and in who he is. He knows people talk because of he and his mom live in a small trailer and because they are a bit on the poor side. It doesn't help that his absent father is a abusive drunk who gives the small town even more to gossip about. He's had it rough growing up but he is the brightest light in this book. The way he cares and is there for Jace made me love him even more. I also loved the relationship between him and his mom. He's very protective of her which is no surprise considering how his father is.

Jace has had quite the opposite childhood. He was raised by two loving parents who have always been a steady stream of support and love. But even having all that love and support throughout his life he is still scared of what the outcome would be when he tells them he is not happy at school and wants to drop out. More importantly he is worried about his parents reaction to him being gay. With all of this he is also struggling holding on to a secret he is keeping for his sister and another he keeping close to his chest which is making him physically sick.

When Jace's secret comes to light it is absolutely heart-breaking. I wanted to crawl through my Kindle and give him a big hug. But thankfully Gavin is there to do it for me. The relationship these guys build together is sweet. Jace calms the crazy in Gavin and helps him be still. Gavin gives Jace strength to be who he is and to follow his dreams.

A great addition to the series.

Pick this one up dolls!

Happy reading! xx

Weight of Silence was a surprisingly good read and I couldn't put it down. The author has a very catching writing style and I immediately felt very close to hear characters.

When Jace visits his family for Thanksgiving, he meets Gavin, a young man who is openly out in their small home town. Jace knows since a while that he is gay, but he didn't dare to share his secret with anybody so far. He isn't able to resist his attraction to Gavin, but when he comes back in the Christmas break, he is very different. He didn't react to Gavin's text messages or calls and he isn't about to seek his company, but of course - as the town they live in is very small - they end up seeing each other anyways.

Gavin immediatly sees that Jace is suffering, but he isn't about to put him under pressure. While Jace's sister and his parents try to find out why he hasn't been himself lately, Gavin's friendly and caring nature are making Jace feel safe. When they are together, he is able to keep his fears at bay and he enjoys being close to Gavin.

However, secrets can't be kept forever. I really loved the way the author was able to build up the suspense with regard to Jace's suffering. I was so desperate to find out what all this was about and I wasn't disappointed by the final turn of events. It might not have been 100 % credible, but I enjoyed the story. And the main characters were great. The story is quite short, so it's just not possible to find out that much about their past and why they might react in a certain way, but I liked them and I wanted them to be happy. Gavin might have been a little bit too perfect, but it didn't affect the story.

I really got curious to read about the story of other characters mentioned in this part and I will definitly read other parts of the series.

Jace Ramsey is a college student troubled by secrets. While home for Thanksgiving, Jace literally runs into Gavin Perez, an openly gay clerk at the local Dollar Mart. Jace comes from a middle-class family, while Gavin shares a trailer with his waitress mom and tries to avoid his abusive, alcoholic father. Despite their differences, Gavin and Jace start a tentative friendship which quickly turns romantic. But Jace's secrets eventually catch up to them and threaten everything he holds dear.

Ugh. This book irritated me. Why? One word: Jace. First, in some ways, this felt like a re-purposed m/f novel, which I hate. On top of that, however, Jace was reminiscent of a weak heroine who's TSTL. You know the type? The damsel in distress that is prone to having a case of the vapors; a drama queen who will run out of the house in the dead of winter in flip-flops and without a coat only to curl up in a tree house while the rest of the town is worriedly searching for her sorry ass. Appealing? I think not. Jace was just such a drama queen and he grated on my last nerve.

Second, Jace's secrets. They. Were. Pathetic.

Third, what was in it for Gavin? Gavin got short-changed here. He bent over backwards for Jace. He forgave Jace for brushing him off. He accepted the secrets and the lies. He was 200% supportive through everything. So what did he get in return? Zip. Zilch. Nada. I don't even think Jace ever told him he loved him. That sucks balls.

Bottom-line: I had high hopes for this book because I thoroughly enjoyed books 1 and 2 of this series. Sadly, this was sorely disappointing. Jace's selfish and self-pitying ways were a total turn off and ruined this one for me.

Book 3 in the Cost of Repairs series is not my favorite but I rounded my rating up, since much of it is me, not the book. There’s a NA feel to this book, since Jace’s character is only 19 and Gavin is 23, I think. My life experiences are too far removed to relate well to Jace. However, AM Arthur has skills and I still could empathize with the results of Jace’s decisions and his descent into depression. Gavin was a very well written character and his street-wise maturity gave him the tools to relate to Jace without judgment but with honesty. I judged though, and cannot understand how much Jace and his sister distrusted their parents. Information about Keith and his wife was minimal in the prior books but indicated they were pretty open-minded individuals. There was a disconnect for me between those two scenarios.

There is added content in this edition but having skipped the first edition of this book, I’m unsure of exact details. I do know that I really liked Gavin and his protective and nurturing personality. The scenes with his mom were great. There was much that I liked, including getting pov’s from each young man. The intimate scenes were lovely, including the epilogue, which also gave excellent closure to the storyline. More of a standalone than the first two, this book was marvelous at developing peripheral characters into a solid storyline. On to book 4. Can’t wait to see Rey and Samuel again!

I very much liked this despite the little bumpy start. It is a love story that comes across quite natural - two very young men who meet and find each other interesting. They are very different and each one of them is interesting and likable on his own. The dynamic between them is well paced and their story unfolds with some not wholly unexpected turns, which give the story some depths - a little counterbalance for the sweet falling in love which is the center of this novel.

A very nice read, sweet and well written - it kind of restored my faith in m/m.

I really really love the way this author writes.... As soon as I begin her books, I am immediately immersed her world and story building ability and characters.

Gavin Perez is a bit of a slacker, but not really. Just because he doesn't have ambitions to go out and conquer the world doesn't mean he achieves nothing. He's good to his mum, he's realistic about his life opportunities and most of all, he is incredibly attracted to Jase Ramsey, who he catches up with at a Thanksgiving feast while he's home from college.

This is only about 190 pages so she doesn't muck about getting to the connection between the boys, even though Jase is not telling any one about his feelings for other boys. Gavin's happy-go-lucky nature relaxes Jase and makes him feel safe, and Gavin can't believe his luck. He never pushes, he never rushes,

Jase returns to college but then comes home for Christmas a different boy. His secrets threaten to overwhelm him, and I thought I would bite my fingers off while waiting to find out what they were. I liked that some of Jase's issues are sort of predictable, but not the only story,

I liked that Gavin didn't judge or become a prat when he finds out (very late in the story). And I loved the resolution.

I loved references to Rey and Sam, and Schuyler and Barrett and that the fire mystery from their story was all explained here, indeed is a small but crucial plot element in Gav's story,

Can't wait for the next one, Acts of Faith I believe.

Loved, loved, loved,

Yeah, go ahead and laugh, Andrea. :P

Okay, i really liked this addition to the series, even though it veers off into the territory of very young new adult college age, which is not an age group i usually read, and is not in keeping with the rest of the series. Overall though, it was good, well paced, good characters.

One thing: Please authors, please, for the love of all that is holy, abolish the phrase "twin bond" from your vocabulary. I know it's not ever going to happen, but this twin can only wish.

Not bad

3.25 ⭐️

Re read - new edition

Not bad, but not my favourite either. I liked Gavin and felt for him, but also was happy to see he wasn’t ashamed of his life, it just was his life. His care and love for his mother was great to read.

Jase was harder to get to know as he was so closed off. Not sure I buy the reason for what happened to him, his dad was a cop but it was what it was.

Looking forward to continuing on.

Another awesome addition

Three books in two days. I can't seem to get enough of this town and their characters. Once again the author has told a tale where I'm hooked from the beginning and rooting for the main couple. Was good to catch up with previous characters and I'm excited to see what's next.

This book is aptly named–some secrets are just so heavy that keeping silent about them can crush a person until they can’t breathe anymore. That’s what happened to Jace Ramsay. He got so tangled up in secrets–someone else’s and his own–that he did something stupid enough to make him vulnerable to blackmail. And now Jace is lost. He can’t ask his family for help because that would mean he’d eventually have to betray someone else’s trust, and he’s made himself guilty anyway, but he’s to weak–at least he thinks so–to get out of the whole disaster by himself, which shames him to the point of self-hatred. He needs someone he feels safe with, someone who will understand him, who won’t judge him or push him, but offer him support and lend him confidence when he can’t find it inside himself. Sweet-natured Gavin Ramsay, with his easygoing manner, with his optimistic lookout at life and his fierce protectiveness towards those he loves, might be just that person for Jace–if Jace could find the courage to trust the man who stole his heart.

Gavin is a living example for the saying: “If life gives you lemons, go make lemonade.” Having been hyperactive his whole life, he’s used to getting himself into messes big and small, and to extricate himself from them again by fast thinking/talking/ acting/ all of the above. Although he’s no slacker, Gavin is a bit of a drifter with not a lot of ambition and no real goal in life. That changes when he meets Jace Ramsay. When Jace withdraws from Gavin after what seemed to be the promising start of a tentative relationship, when Jace returns from College a changed person, Gavin makes it his aim to find out which mess Jace has caught himself in, and to help him out of it.

I loved the characterizations of Gavin and Jace and the way the writing in itself reflected their respective personalities. Not only in dialogue, but also in the narrative they had distinctive, recognizable voices. The writing drew me right into the story from the first word onward–fast-paced in places, almost poetic in others, with sweet love scenes so perfect for the two very young main characters (Gavin is 23, Jace 19), with gripping action scenes and a delicious dash of humor.

Once again, this book is set in the small town of Stratton, Pennsylvania, with Dixie’s Cup, the town diner, as the hub that connects this book to the previous two in the series, Cost of Repairs and Color of Grace (reviews under the cuts). Gavin’s mother Lucia is a waitress at Dixie’s; Jace’ father Keith Ramsay is a colleague of policeman Sam from Cost of Repairs. Dixie’s is where Gavin and Jace literally run into each other for the first time. I was happy to meet some of the characters from the previous books again, even though only in passing. Also, one of the loose threads from the previous books was tied up nicely in here. Weight of Silence is a worthy continuation to a very enjoyable series, and even though it can be read as a standalone, I’d recommend to read the books in order for maximum enjoyment.

However, two things kept this book from being completely perfect for me. The first was the fundamental secret, the one all of Jace’s other secrets came back to and revolved around. It just didn’t quite fit in with the description of his family as a whole–I can’t give away more in order to not be spoilerish, but that just didn’t sit right with me, even thought it’s theoretically conceivable that a scraed, overwhelmed teenager would act this way.

The second, and somewhat bigger issue that I had was the ending. It was sweet, romantic, fitting both Gavin’s and Jace’s personalities, but after the harsh and sometimes raw realism of the rest of the book, the ending–at least to me–sounded overly starry-eyed. It left me on a low note despite the fact that it was a very positive ending. But well, this might be just me, and others might love the book exactly for its ending.

Overall, this book was a very enjoyable page-turner with characters with whom I totally fell in love. I can only warmly recommend it.

Okay. I just hate Our MC Jace Ramsay who is actually an sophomore college student but acted hard-headed and spoiled like baby when he doesn't want tell the truth that he is gay and doesn't want continue his college to his parents. He loves to running away from reality and go to Gavin seeking the pleasure. Boo :/

I'm Sorry but i'm not really through into this books. this books maybe not my cup of tea. >__<

This would have been a solid 3.5 if it wasn't that one thing pissed me off. Trying not to give any spoilers, but if someone forces you to do something that you do not want to do -either by blackmail or aggression - it isn't "taking advantage of you." It is a criminal act.

Even worse, a bully remains a bully and will continue abusing helpless innocents because of that "weight of silence."

Another great addition to a great series. My only complaint with all the books I've read in this series so far - hence the 4 star ratings - is the endings have left me feeling like there are things left unsaid in each couples story. Hopefully they'll return in books to come or each get another book to tie things up.

A great read all around though.

Gavin Perez, is sweet natured young man with an easygoing manner. He may only be a clerk at the local dollar store, but that’s only because he isn’t sure what he wants to do with his life. I love Gavin’s glass half full, lemon into lemonade attitude. His optimistic outlook on life is contagious. Having been hyperactive his whole life, he’s used to leaving things half-finished. However, there is one thing he’s determined to dedicate his entire focus on and see to the end… Jace and their relationship.

Jace Ramsey, son of a local police detective, is a college student with secrets. While home for Thanksgiving, Jace literally runs into Gavin Perez. He is instantly attracted to Gavin, but unlike Jace, Gavin is openly gay. They spend time together over the holiday then Jace heads back to college and withdraws from Gavin and their promising relationship. That doesn’t deter Gavin, especially when Jace returns to Stratton for the Christmas holiday a changed person. Gavin makes it his mission to find out why Jace looks so ill and sad. His fierce protectiveness towards those he loves, is just who Jace needs.

Jace is keeping a few really big secrets and he must find the courage to trust the man who stole his heart. Jace's secrets eventually catch up to him and with Gavin’s support and love, he finds the strength to reveal them all and embrace who he is.

Although the characters come from two different backgrounds they find common ground through friendship and love. As with all of AMA’s books, the characters are well-developed, the plot is fast-paced, the sexy-times are HAF, and love wins.

This book has everything. Two soulmates, sex, deep dark secrets, criminal activity, and a few evil a$$holes. You can’t go wrong with Weight of Silence.

This was my least favorite of the series so far. I didn't connect with the MCs as much as I would have liked. Part of the reason is I didn't understand why Jace was so hesitant to be honest with his family; they didn't seem like the kind of people who'd be upset with him for being gay or for not being into college. I got the feeling they'd be more upset about his dishonesty. Also, not a big fan of insta-love and miscommunication tropes.

For those who think it's not rape or sexual assault just because the person agreed to the act, when one person says no, they don't want to & the other person uses some sort of coercion to force them into agreeing: that's sexual assault or rape if you want to call it that. No always means no. It doesn't mean blackmailing someone into saying yes then calling it consensual.

It would seem that Gavin and Jace wouldn't match. The poor Hispanic boy and the college bound middle class white boy. A rather messy faux pass has Gavin trying to get Jase to forgive him. When Jase becomes uncommunicative after Thanksgiving Gavin is prepared to move on. When Jace comes home for Christmas the two reconnect but Jase realizes that he's got some growing to do. Gavin's out and Jace is still in the closet and hiding something that happened during his last semester that could destroy everything. A very compelling read.

I really enjoyed reading about Gavin and Jace, They were really sweet together. I love how they supported each other though their hardships. Something about them just put a smile to my face.
You can tell that this series was written early in Arthur's career. It doesn't pack the same emotional punch as many of her other books do. That does not mean these are not worth reading, because they are. It's just nice to get a bit of angst relief at times.

This is the third book in the Cost of Repairs series. It just not as good as the previous books in the series. I found myself skimming passages to get to the end of the book. Maybe, it has to do with the MC's age. Gavin is 23 bus boy who also works at the Dollar Mart who has crush on Jace, who is a college sophomore who isn't really interested in college. I just didn't care. I was happy when it ended.
