Tales from the Vault Vol 1 is a compilation of the very first Knights of the Dinner Table stories. These include their very first appearance in Shadis magazine in March 1990 through the December 1996 issue of Dragon magazine. Extras include Jolly's personal history of the origins of this long running role playing comic. All new perfect-bound version!
It's wonderful to have this historic collection of the classic Knights of the Dinner Table: the one-page strips from Shadis, Dragon, The Familiar, and elsewhere.
These strips were wildly innovative at the time because they were actually humor about gamers, rather than humor about fantasy games. And, they presented us at our best and worst. Well, mainly at at our worst, because the crew tends to the sort of iconic gamers who made the lives of GMs hell. If there's a stereotype about how RPG players are awful, it's in here, presented without comment.
Perhaps not as innovative as they were 25+ years ago, but these are still fun reads. (And historic ones.)
For the completionist, this is a fascinating historical document to show us how we got to where we are. We are introduced to the core characters and the beginning of the extended cast and we get to see the kernels of their personalities sprouting. However, this is not the book to use to introduce a new reader.
Compiling the rough beginnings of the endearingly DIY-styled gamer comic, which is just hitting its stride in the second half of the time period covered by the collection. Full review: https://refereeingandreflection.wordp...
This was awesome, but I knew it would be. There are plenty of extras too, like mini-cartoons that they used as headers for fax sheets etc... This really has me jonesing to play some D&D.
