(Warning: This description -- and the story itself -- contain spoilers from Hugh Howey's Wool Omnibus.)
What happens when a silo goes dark -- willingly? Maya has been sent to Silo 23 to investigate. Disconnected from the grid, the silo appears to be dead, rotted from the inside. What Maya finds is a silo that is anything but deceased.
Shut off from the outside world and other silos, Silo 23 has evolved into something unexpected, and something more fearsome than Maya could have anticipated.
Greatfall: Part 1 is the first installment of Jason Gurley's dark serial novel, inspired by the world created by Hugh Howey in Wool.
Jason Gurley is the author of Awake in the World (Roaring Brook, 2019) and Eleanor (Crown, 2016), and co-author of The Edge of Sleep (St. Martin's, 2023). His short fiction appears in the anthologies Loosed Upon the World (Saga, 2015) and Help Fund My Robot Army!!! (2014). He lives and writes in Scappoose, Oregon. More at www.jasongurley.com.
I got pulled into Jason Gurley's "Greatfall: Part 1" when he mentioned on Hugh Howey's wall that there was a sample on his website... so I wandered over to read it. From the beginning it was mysterious, compelling and dark. Count me intrigued.
After I invested 99¢, I got more of this powerfully different Silo world from the point of view of the residents--an innocent's perspective, and then that of one of the leaders. All fascinating. But I was really hooked once a stranger came into the picture.
I can't say more without spoiling it for you, but let's just say that there's a little Stephen King atmosphere going on here. Be prepared for the unexpected. I know I'm scared!
But I'm already looking forward to the next installment... Comment
Loved it, and could barely put it down. I was so disappointed when I got to the end of the book, because I wanted it to continue. I'll definitely continue on to the next book.
Knowing what I did about the Wool universe, I wasn't sure about reading a book by another author in that universe, but it worked better than I could have expected.
Wow...a new twist in the silos of the Wooliverse! I have a million unanswered questions and thoughts going through my head. I'm not going to add spoilers. Go find out for yourself. You'll say, "Wow!" and wait impatiently for the next part.
Fan-fic'n-tastic! I really enjoyed the rogue silo and am looking forward to the rest of this mini-series. Gurley has a way of spinning words that is very similar to Hugh howey. If you've read and enjoyed Wool, then this is a great addition to the Wooliverse.
Wow....what a swift kick in the pants....really didn't see that coming. A dark, deranged, delicious nightmare -- kept me on edge til the last word. Can't wait to see where this story goes!
I was really excited to get back into this world and this book didn't disappoint.
I forgot I had this on my Kindle and started reading, not realizing it was a short story/intro. The second I was done I wanted more. The characters were wonderful, and the unique situation at this Silo was kind of terrifying - especially how the Wise Father wasn't entirely what he seemed at first. Was definitely unnerving at the end.
Wonderful! I love the silo setting! And Jason has made the silo 23 his OWN with it's own unique story and characters and government organization. I felt like I knew each of the characters personally and identified with their plight.........I read it straight through and at 1 a.m. I immedediately downloaded and read book 2! I can't wait for book 3 to come out...Jason has a lot of loose strings to tie up......but I hope 3 isn't the end. This could be a great looooong series! Thank you, Jason!
Such a dark twist in the Wool universe. It was well written and fit well into the Wool fan-fiction genre, so just for that it could have five stars. But I really dislike the gruesome evolution of this silo. It felt more like horror than dystopian. So just two stars for that. Averaging that and then adding in a half more star just because I fully intend to read the follow up books (this is not a stand alone story), equates to four stars. Yea, it's the best I could come up with.
I loved Wool and I read some other 'authorized' fanfic in the past months but Greatfall is the best so far. It left me wishing for more. The author has found a great way to write his story in the same universe but to be free to put some interesting inventions at the same time. This proves again the greatness of Hug Howey's Wool, in the hand of a good writer as Jason Gurley it shows a lot of new potential! Looking forward to reading part two.
The Wool books are some of my ultimate all time favorite books. If someone would have given me this book with a cover that said it was written by Hugh Howey, I totally would have believed it! Gurley is a fabulous author. I am now reading The Settlers, and I can barely put it down. I definitely will be reading all of his work!
Was a great peak into one of the silos gone dark in Hugh Howey's world of WOOL. I loved it but gave it 4 out of 5 because it left us with a cliffhanger clearly designed to make us buy the next one...which I'm going to for only $0.99
I AM AMAZED! Of course I read a number of reviews prior to reading this first part, but the turn of events turely surprised me...... a real page turner no less.
