Twistered

My name is Dorothy. I live in Kansas. I've seen a few tornadoes in my day, but nothing like the one that dropped my dead ex-husband, Wade, on my doorstep in a crushed motor home. Wade looked almost as beat up as the RV when he spilled from the back door, his red sneakers sticking out.

That was just the beginning of a crazy Memorial Day weekend when I won a big contest (complete with cash and a car), was accosted by a studly FBI agent, uncovered an old case of blackmail, discovered my ex-love might still love me, dealt with the Wickeds motorcycle gang, managed the annual charity dog show...and nearly died from a gunshot wound.

I almost had the feeling that I wasn't in Kansas anymore....

A fun, fast paced mystery that riffs on The Wizard of Oz, but in a modern setting. There’s a large cast of characters, but the important ones are easily distinguishable.

Dorothy Gaylord doesn’t live in Oz, but she does live in the next best place—Broomfield, Kansas. Broomfield knows it has a lot in common with the mythical land over the rainbow. They even have tornadoes that blow in adventures from time to time. But what they don’t usually have are murder investigations.

When Dorothy, her faithful cat SoSo, and her Margaret Hamilton talking key fob, survive a damaging tornado one late May afternoon, she’s relieved to find that her beloved town is mostly intact, but she’s shocked to find the twister has dropped an unfamiliar Winnebago in the middle of her street. The problem is, there’s a very familiar body inside—the red-tennis-shoe-wearing corpse of her ex-husband Wade.

Within hours Dorothy is embroiled in the search for answers, but they are not easy to come by, and she’s not helped by the fact that so many clues seem to point to her as a suspect. She does have allies—her former love, Sheriff Drew Strawn, FBI agent Jack Tinsdale, and her best buddy Leo, who hates hospitals and longs to start his own styling salon. But she has enemies as well including the vicious Wickeds gang, who want to use Broomfield as their new drug-dealing center.

As the paths leading to the killer get more and more convoluted, Dorothy finds she no longer knows who to trust. Drew says he still loves her, but Jack also vies for her hand. Is Drew really a traitor? Does Jack work for the Wickeds? And what about the monkeys Dorothy’s best friend lets run loose in the tornado shelter?

“Twistered” is a really fun story by JL Wilson. And while the mystery is good it's not even the strength of the book; the best part is finding all the crazy-fun references to “The Wizard of Oz.” I don’t think JL misses a one! Read "Twistered" to find the counterparts to the scarecrow, tin man, cowardly lion (afraid of hospitals?!), Auntie Em, even the monkeys (okay, spoiler, they don’t have wings, but they are great!). What does Broomfield have instead of a yellow brick road—or is there one? A horse of a different color? Who will get to sing O-E-O? The book reveals all. Oh, and you actually can find out whodunnit to poor Wade-the-Ex.

This is an enjoyable, fast read for a weekend when there’s no place like home. Hats off, JL, for a very clever little book!

Clever

Amusing and clever, the story follows a Dorothy from a small town in Kansas. The elements of OZ are worked into the plot, a tornado but with a RV flying instead of a house. Instead of Toto the dog, there is So so the Cat. As clever and fun as this was, it really had little impact on the actual story about a very naive, clueless librarian who ends up in the middle of a drug dealing motorcycle gang. Also there are two heroes involved: the local Sheriff and a FBI investigator. What brought the story down a star was the continuing TDTL actions of the heroine.

Minor Plot Reveal ------------

Example: They are fleeing in some tunnels from a possibly murderous gang who are specifically looking for Dorothy and she remembers a movie she saw and starts worrying about monsters, bottomless pits and other fantasies while a real serious problem is actually happening. She also keeps talking loudly about irrelevant things during dangerous moments. Included are irrelevant questions to medical personnel trying to save a life. This is To Dumb To Live TDTL. Of course both men think she's wonderful. Sorry but to me she's stupid which seriously detracts from her heroine status. Yes she's sweet, naive etc... all good traits, but do men really value extreme cluelessness? Does it make them feel smarter, better? What's with this anyway. Does it occur to them that they're going to have dumb kids? This isn't as bad as some that I have read with this type of heroine but I have obviously reached my saturation point and apologize for expressing the totality of my annoyance on this particular book. It is actually a good read in many ways and enjoyable.

Filled with ironic sense of humor and a cute story that includes a mystery with her ex husband and some romance with her former boyfriend the town's Sheriff and a FBI agent. Love the small town antics.

Fun read. I liked the characters and the mystery kept me guessing til the end. Loved the tie in with the Wizard of Oz. I'd recommend it as a good read.

This was a fun read but the main character wasn't very smart. She always locked the front door but never bothered with the others.
