Daddy Long Legs is a retelling of sorts rather than an adaptation of the novel with the same name by Jean Webster. I enjoyed the novel it was based on a lot more than I did this manhwa but that is not to say that this is not a good read. Unlike the original it is based on, this is more of a bittersweet story but I'm inclined to say that two volumes was too short to truly capture what it was trying to deliver.
I found the plot to be a little confusing - having read the original novel definitely helped but there were multiple stories told at once and out of order which wasn't always easy to follow. I also found some of the elements that were meant to be romantic a little bit unsettling. One of the characters is deeply in love with someone to the extent that their whole life revolves around it. This character follows their loved one into the same university, later the same work place as well as draws pictures and writes notes about the person they love. While there is nothing wrong with that in itself, they've never even spoken. It is not uncommon in romance comics that characters follow their crushes into a certain school, but I felt that this one really smacked of stalking.
I somehow also struggled to truly get invested into the characters and plot. I can't say if that was just me or whether it was all just a little hollow, but for most of the story I was mildly bored. It didn't help that the art wasn't to my liking either. There wasn't anything wrong with it whatsoever, but I've generally come to notice that I don't seem to connect with a lot of manhwa art styles. But that's definitely a me-thing and nothing I can objectively criticise.
This was still a pretty good little series, though, if only for the fact that the ending was very unexpected. It was really a bit of a punch in the gut and I didn't see it coming at all. I don't think I liked it well enough to warrant a future reread but it is definitely worthwhile picking up just to see how it ends.
Komik ni boleh dikatakan perfect - cukup elemen2 romance, slice of life, misteri, dan komedi yg dipaparkan. Lukisannya pula cute jer.
Mengisahkan tentang Cha Young Mi yg hilang tempat bergantung setelah kematian ibu bapanya.
--- "Daddy Long Legs" is a modern adaptation of the novel of the same name by Jean Webster.
It ends up being its own thing rather than an adaptation. So if you expect a manhwa version of the book, this is not the correct reading experience.
With all that being said, this wasn't a good book for me. And it's a pure me-thing. The art is incredible and sweet, but the story pacing was a mess and the translation did not help either. To the point that it was not clear if she was an orphan like in the original or not.
I liked the actualization of emails instead of letters. I really enjoyed it at first, when the emails seems to come "from the past". It could be a nice twist. Unfortunately, knowing the original book I have a clear idea of how this is going to play out.
In this first volume, I struggled to get invested in the characters and plot. The story was a little over the place, sometimes it seems the author forgot about some plot points and bring them back a few chapters later. Concerning the characters, they are not interesting enough. My main issue is we never see a real reason why this "mysterious" guy might want to help Cha, so that relationship felt hollow.
Overall, it's a nice manhwa but this first volume it's not working for me.
This manhwa is so good! The plot, the storyline is astounding. Not regretting buying this manhwa although it's hard to find it. Plus, there is something about Korean manhwa that I really like. Mostly the drawings are so pretty. The fl, Cha Yong Mi is so positive-minded & I really like her despite the tragedy that happens in her life; her parent's death. Idk why she cut her hair shorter when she's working, but she look more better with longer hair. Plus, Kim Jun Ho & the CEO character is kinda mysterious. Are they sort of connected? Let's find out in Volume 2. Futhermore, The love story about the mysterious lady in the portrait so saddening & touching. I really want to know who her crush & what happens to her :(
