As punishment for my lack of impulse control and bad decisions I occasionally go to the end of my kindle library and make myself read something from the last couple of books. Most of these books are from around 2015 and vary wildly from my current tastes.
So this was one of those books. It was terrible. It’s a novella and still too long with the bellowing and honor and repeating words in the same sentence.
Again I whisper to myself “what was I thinking?”

k here's the thing I hate Novellas they are a waste of my time and freakin make me angry when I have to pay for part of a damn story. It seems to me it's just like a comercial for the book industry which is really sad. I would rather pay full price and get the full story. I bet if someone would do a study they would find that most of the books put out after a stupid novella do not have as good a review because the reader is still wanting to know what happened in the last story and what is going to happen so they are thinking about that and trying to concentrate on a new story. It's like leaving the turkey stuffed and ready to cook and then finishing the rest of thanksgiving dinner and serving. People are going hey I thought I saw a damn turkey what happened. It leaves a whole, it makes them mad and the next book in your series they read they read with a grudge and only half a mind, (which most people already only operate on half a mind as it is so thats pretty scary!)
Ok that being said I can not wait to read the full story and it had better be good I deserve a signed copy for being put through all this crap LOL!!!!!!
Really I can't wait I know it will be good!

What a teaser this story is! Since the first book in this series, poor Ian has been a hot mess. After all, one of his brothers in arms killed his mate right in front of him. Before he ever had a chance to know her. It messed him up so bad that they had to chain him up in the basement for awhile. He’s been the resident warrior on the edge.

Now as this story begins, he is convinced that not only has he found his sheva again… he has lost her again. His family curse is eating him alive, tempting him to join her in death. Somehow, though, he resists. And finds her yet again. Only this time, he has a chance to speak to her. To connect.

This is a very short novella, a little more than 50 pages and I don’t want to spoil too much of the plot. I will tell you this: Alice is back from the dead… but this is no HEA. In fact, this story leaves us with more questions than answers. But it also leaves me really wanting more. Unfortunately, the next book in the Order Blade series isn’t even Ian’s! Well played, Stephanie Rowe. Who could walk away now?

If you’ve been reading Stephanie’s Order of the Blade series you know the premise of the series. Two thousand years ago from a war between two brother a legacy was born. The Calydon warriors’ purpose was the keep the world safe from evil and when needed to kill a Calydon warrior and/or his sheva (mate) when the Calydon warrior went rogue/mad after finding her.

Ian Fitzgerald’s sheva was killed by Elijah Ross (hero from the 3rd book) almost seconds after he had found her. Throughout all 3 books we saw Ian as a very angry and tormented man because of this. In this short novella we get Ian background. His ancestor Augustus Fitzgerald had brought a curse upon his family by killing the soul mate of a Calydon warrior who was into black magic. The warrior then cursed Augustus and all his offspring to experience love and then to lose said woman and to be so overwhelmed with grief that they killed themselves. Ian is the last Fitzgerald remaining alive and since losing his sheva is fighting the demons that want to take control and have him end his life.

At the end of the 3rd book we find Ian carrying out a dying woman who he says is his sheva. But how can this be when we know his sheva had already been killed by Elijah. Well we find out how in this book. And what an interesting concept. There isn’t really a HEA at the end of this book because that will be had when Ian’s full length book comes out later in the series. But what this novella does give you is hope for Ian’s future.

Ack! This was frustrating! I quite liked the story but it was so short and it just ends at a cliffhanger! If I had known it was going to be some kind of extended teaser for the ACTUAL book that isn't out yet I wouldn't have bothered buying it. If this book is included in the full-length book coming out >:-( If this book isn't included in the full-length book coming out :-)

Despite this frustration though it was really interesting.

I like poor Ian (I was thinking in earlier books he really got the short end of the sucky stick) and so far really like his sheva, Catherine/Alice/?, but WHAT IS SHE?! Guess I have to wait...le sigh...

"Forever in Darkness" by Stephanie Rowe. Book 4 in the Order of the Blade series.

I just finished reading this novella October 18, 2017. This is my review.

This book is actually a short novella starring the characters of Ian and Alice. It's basically a small teaser, a sneak peak, as to how Ian and Alice meet and the troubles their relationship is going to have in the future. You can read this novella as a stand alone because none of the characters from the series are in it and Ian's history is explained very succinctly.

I usually give a review of the story line but this novella is short and I'd basically be telling you the whole story. But the basics are: Ian is a Calydon warrior that's buried his sheva (destined mate)...twice. But when he meets Alice, he knows she's his mate as well.

What ensues is a story with teasers and hinting that Alice may or may not be Ian's mate, Alice is a strange and mysterious character with many secrets and there's a cliffhanger ending to their story. It's a great set up for their full book "Darkness Arisen" (Book 6). I really enjoyed it.

I took a really long break from this series and now I'm back with a vengeance!

This was a pretty short, quick read, which gives us the background we will need to fully appreciate Ian's story moving forward. He's going crazy. He's cursed. And he just keeps watching his mate die! After just burying another one of her bodies, he ends up finding her at a bar with all sorts of trouble chasing her. Ian is more determined than ever to save her, but the curse is also just as determined to get him to kill himself.

Ian has taken the mantle for his family and is committed to freeing his family of their shame. I was really rooting for him this time, but it should tell you something that he's got his own tale to tell.

This author delivers!

Well, this series appears to have taken an unexpected turn! Ian's backstory makes his previous appearances seem heartbreaking in retrospect; now there's the Catherine/Alice dilemma, and how a mate can not be a mate, and what is tormenting Alice and why...I can't believe Ian hasn't already cracked! Love the intrigue, LOVE the off-the-charts, desperation-fueled passion...I'm even enjoying the twist of a mid-series mini novel that isn't immediately followed by the conclusion to the same couple's story. I can't wait to continue with this series!

The Curse

This is a short precursor to the complete story of Ian and Alice. Ian is a Calydon warrior and member of the Order of the Blade. Centuries earlier his family was placed under a curse that causes their warriors' mates to die and the men to commit suicide, overcome by grief. Months earlier, his mate died in his arms, and it happened again as the book begins. But Ian is determined to beat the curse, then he scents her again.

Sneak Peak.

This sneak peck into Ian and Alice's tale is a great introduction to their main follow up story 'Darkness Arisen" that leaves you wanting more.
Looking forward to reading their complete story, and hoping this small tease is all that it seems to promise of an exciting, fast pace action filled, heart rending read.

A very good short story

There is really nothing I can say that would not reveal something of the story. Except, that the world of the Order of the Blade just got way more interesting. Fun! Fun! Fun!

Ok so it didn't cost much but I feel ripped off. This should be a prologue for the book. I don't agree that this is a novella. Good thing purchased as ebook.

All that aside, does make u want to read the book if u haven't read anything in the series (which I had so was already hooked).

Is Ian forever doomed?

I sure hope not.
My heart breaks for him.
He’s been struggling in the last couple of books. After finding his soul mate and losing her again and again. You can see the struggle he’s been dealing with.
I cannot wait to read his full book.

I want more

I know this was a novella but did it have to end there? Ah! I want more, so much more. I would recommend this book, especially if you enjoy supernatural romance.

If you like to be teased, then this novella is for you! Having met Ian in the full length Order of the Blade books, I knew he was messed up. I even thought I knew WHY he was messed up. Let me just say that I had NO idea! When I finished reading these too few pages I had a much better idea of who Ian is. BUT I now had questions & I wanted answers immediately! But alas, I know I have to wait until his full story comes out & let me tell you, this is going to be a very hard wait. I am loving the story line of the Order of the Blade and am always ready & waiting for the next installment. As I said, this one is a major tease because when you turn that last page, you are left wanting more & feeling like you were interrupted in the middle of reading as if someone snatched your book away.

Personally though, I pretty much love that feeling because it lets me know the author has me & my full attention at her disposal. That is so much better than the feeling of indifference you sometimes get when reading. Although I must admit that I do not think I have ever read anything by Stephanie Rowe that left me feeling indifferent. Pretty sure I am always upset that there weren't more pages or that the next book isn't ready yet. That is what makes her a "must-read" author for me.
You will definitely get the most out of this is you have read the previous Order of the Blade books as it could be a bit confusing otherwise. But if you haven't read the others then all I can say is "WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?" Go get them, read them, and then read this & begin your anxious wait for more.

The reason I rated this so low is that I have no understanding of what was happening.
The next issue was with the plot. The book was so short, that there was barely enough room for a plot. I know novellas are short, but I think this qualifies as a short story. Novellas generally range to about 100-170 pages. This was around 50 pages. The majority of the text was taken up by Ian feeling grief over losing his Sheva. As I mentioned before, there was barely a plot. This felt more like the beginning first 50 pages of a novel where it introduces you to the main characters and the problem that needs to be solved. Notice: problem that needs to be solved. Nothing was solved or settled in the reader's mind in this book. Bringing me back to my argument: there was no plot.

I am a huge fan of this series, and I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I realised that book 4 would be a novella. Whilst, Forever in Darkness, meets the number count of a novella, it most certainly manages to captures the essence and quality of a full length novel.

Stephanie Rowe, once again has managed to present a striking, passionate and pained character in our Order hero Ian. I was swept away in this intriguing storyline that was so very well constructed and developed. Stephanie managed to bring an original concept to the storyline, so that whilst we have the familiarity of character with Ian, the plot was truly unique and remarkably constructed which is a quite an achievement considering this is a novella.

I did cry out vocally at the end as I was so desperate for more. That was the only time that greatly desired more as the `closure' wasn't wholly fulfilling, rather it left me craving for the next installment. Please don't keep us waiting too long Stephanie :)

The Order of the Blade will always be a great series to me.

It is really awesome to hear Ians story although it was too short. I hope that I get to see more from him in future.

Due to the curse put upon the Calydon warriors that forces them to fall in love with their shevas. A bonding that is forbidden because in the past the Calydon warriors have gone rogue. However, in recent times, a few calydon warriors have succeeded in defeating the curse that have for years forced the Order of the Blade members to kill their shevas or the warriors (when they turn rogue)and managed to continue living with their shevas.

Looking forward to reading Kanes story :D

Seriously loved this series.... Could not stop until I read the most recent one. The whole Calydon mythology was really neat. While the Sheeva Bond thing gets a little worn out, it was still a bit of a twist on your typical soulmate idea. Books further in the series don't rely so heavily on the Sheeva Bond/curse/whatever, so I was thankful for that. The plot lines to all the books are great. The characters are solid. Writing is great. I was not disappointed, in the slightest.

That being said, this one was slightly less than stellar, but only because it was a novella. Ian comes back later, thank god, so you get to read his full story. I feel like this novella wasn't necessary, but I still enjoyed it. The writing was in no way lacking, it's just, this could have been an epilogue instead of a whole novella.

This is the 4th book in the series "Order of the Blade". It was a Novella and even though I loved it, it had action, mystery and great characters and some steamy loving, I was disappointed that it ended in a cliffhanger and if I want to know the whole story of Ian and Alice there will be another book. I totally agree with another reviewer that I would gladly have paid for the whole book and not for a Novella and then then an additional book. I am a big fan of Stephanie Rowe and I do want to know what will happen next in the series but it did leave a bad taste in my mouth. I have to admit I am slightly less excited about the series than I was at the end of book 3.

Being a huge fan of The Order of the Blade series, I was so excited to hear that this novella was being released. And I wasn’t disappointed! Stephanie has once again written a fantastic story. This novella is a stand-alone, yet has enough content, that readers of the series are left satisfied. Forever in Darkness is the start of a whole new adventure for the group of Immortal Warriors. I feel, I must also give warning, have your tissues ready, as your heart will break right alongside of Ian’s. And then hang on, as the roller-coaster ride begins….

I do love this series.

This is a novella, and its purpose is to set up Ian's story, which will be book 6. It's an interesting enough story and I enjoyed it. There was something missing though and it didn't pack quite the same punch as the full length novels. Nor was the story completely resolved (that'll be book 6). I can't help but feel that this would have been better as part of one of the books. Maybe even an epilogue at the end of book 5.

I did like the book and it was well-written. I just felt like I was reading it as quickly as possible so that I could get onto the next book.
