"Invasion: Colorado" is a disturbing and controversial technothriller vast in scope, written by best-selling author Vaughn Heppner. To find the first book in the series, search for "Invasion: Alaska."
I was born in Canada and remember as a small boy crawling in my snow-fort. I closed my eyes, and when I tried to open them, they were frozen shut. I didn't panic, but wiped away the ice crystals, unglued my eyes and kept on building my tunnel. Those were great days! I moved to Central California before seventh grade and couldn't believe I lived in a land where oranges grew on trees and you could pick grapes from the vine.
I used to wonder what I wanted to do with my life, what kind of work specifically. I was miserable not knowing and bordering on desperate. Then one day a friend gave me his typewriter. I began working on a novel. A different person told me it was much easier on a computer, so I bought one and began getting up at 4:30 A.M. each morning before work, writing for three hours. My eyes were unglued once again as the pang of misery left my gut. I knew exactly what I wanted to do: write. So now that's what I do, I write, and write, and write, and I love it.
This is a direct follow up of the previous books and the action takes place a few weeks later. Slowly we see the Americans turning the tide of the war as they fight the Chinese invasion in the midwest. The action is fast paced and the book is hard to drop there is however a lack of new characters and what the old ones do is becoming too predictable...
I'm not sure either how well those books have been selling as there is a comment at the end from author, encouraging the readers to review the book if they want to see more in this serie...
First of all I must apologize to the author for not reviewing this book or the rest in the series which I've finally finished. My wife spent 10 days in the hospital in June and since then I've been tied up most of the time taking care of her and doing all the other housework.
My review of the Invasion: series
I really thought the whole series deserves 5 stars. It was a very well thought out and written book. The whole speculative idea of China attacking the US could be a possibility in the future, the Germans I wouldn't be too sure of though. Some of the weapons used could become a possibility in the time frame the book was written in especially the German robotics. I could go on but I don't want to add any spoilers to the review.
Mr Heppner definitely has a winner in this series and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I'd recommend the series to anyone who likes High-Tec, Military Science Fiction taking place in the near future.
I am surprised and pleased that this series is as good as it is. Usually multi volume series don't usually all gel as this one. The author gas chosen very real scenarios without outrageous weapons and theory. I look forward to the next.
It's hard to write a review for the 3rd book in a series when that series follows a consistent story line.
What I can say is that I'm still loving this series. The key strength of the series remains that the story is told from both sides, the US and China. The mix of tactics, strategy and ego makes this a compelling series.
I'll keep reading them as long as them keep coming.
The battle for the US continues in the third of the ‘Invasion ...’ series by Heppner. The Chinese and their allies are pushing hard north from the bridge head established at the end of book 2. Whilst the invasion of California had not been the total success envisaged by the Chinese the damage to the US troops was sufficient to permit them to continue their push north, their aim, split the US in two and take control of the central plains and the food growing potential that they offer. The elements come to the aid of the beleaguered US troops as unseasonal rain turns the countryside into a muddy quagmire which cause logistical problems as the much-needed reinforcements and re-supply gets slowed down in the mud. This delay allows the US to resupply as well and to provide much needed rest to the troops. A surprising offer comes from the German Dominion, persuade the Canadians to cede Quebec to the German Dominion and they will move the troops poised to invade Eastern US from Cuba to Quebec which will free up of a million troops preparing for the anticipated German invasion to support the main body of the army. The Chinese learn that the Behemoth factory is in Denver and they decide to divert elements of the third army to capture Denver and the factory. Is this a smart move or will splitting the forces cause the Chinese thrust to fail? The US see an opportunity, a largescale counter offensive with all of their troops, Behemoths and militia to surprise and drive the Chinese back towards (and hopefully into) Mexico. Can this bold thrust work or are they simply delaying the inevitable? Meanwhile, in China the slow down of the Chinese push and the potential defeat caused by US counter offensive starts to put pressure on the Chinese leader (Hong) and it looks like there is a potential coup in the offing. Can he survive? What impact will this leadership uncertainty have on the overall US campaign? Another great instalment in this series which is a mix of geo-political thriller and space marine sci-fi with all the futuristic weaponry (battlefield lasers, jet packs etc.). Can’t wait to see how this series turns out and am eagerly looking forward to the next book.
This is the third book in Vaughn Heppner’s Invasion series. Set in the not-too-distant future, the world has cooled off due to volcanic activity, creating a food shortage. The United States has finally had to pay the bill for its runaway spending, which has thrust it into a depression. The Chinese, desperate for food for their populace and looking to flex their muscle, have invaded through Mexico, taking aim at the heartland and the food supply.
As the title states, most of the action in this book takes place in Colorado. Having been pushed back in both Alaska and California, the Chinese Army and their South American allies take aim at pushing through Colorado north, then across to the Mississippi River. However, the Americans have something to say about that.
Chinese technology seems to be superior to the American technology at nearly every turn, except for one thing: the American super-tanks known as Behemoths. The problem has been turning them out, which is a slow process. The main factory is located in Denver, right in the path of this latest Chinese offensive.
I can't stop reading this stuff it is like sci-fi warfare porn. The intrigue is great the effect that the war has on America and its highly vaunted freedoms. The detail of the warfare and tactics is excellent and really brings it home. The story doesn't spare the violence or horror of war.
Great series all the way around. It was good to finally see the US turn the tide and stop falling back. I am looking forward to see how the counter offensive plays out and what the GD does.
