Ok, first kindle read of the year...

I got my hands on this book for free sometime in 2016, I think, and it's been hanging out on my kindle since. It is on my 18 ebooks to read in 2018-list, and as it's rather short, I thought it a good enough idea to start the year with it.

It was an OK and fast enough read, I guess.
Other than that, I don't know if there is anything positive to say about it - for me.
This is a romance story, the first in a series, and it uses all the cliches in the world. I mean it, everything. If that isn't enough it stole some of its most important scenes from well known fiction.
I won't say which, but it was impossible to miss them.

The story is rough, and not that catching, really, as you can see where it's going from the third chapter.

While the writing was OK, it wasn't that great. It had some mistakes a program like Grammarly or an editor would have picked up, and used way to many words to describe something simple.

So, while it was a fast and easy enough read to start the year with, I won't be picking up the rest of this series, or anything else from the authors, for that matter.
Their style and stories just weren't for me.

I picked this up because the cover suggested a light, amusing read. Turns out it isn’t. Nor is it a serious read, but it’s definitely not the snarky, fun book I was looking for. That said, it’s well written and intriguing, so I did read it despite being a touch miffed about being misled as to the genre.
Elle Chambers is an enchantress – a witch with low grade powers. Or so she’s had drummed into her. Based in Edinburgh, she earns a living as an insurance investigator, and her latest case comes complete with a seriously hot, wealthy art collector who shows a mutual interest in Elle.
But then her liaison with the coven, Rebecca, along with another seriously hot prospect, the magically tattooed warlock, Evert, warns her off the case without giving any clear reason.
And that’s for me the weakest part of the plot. Rebecca all but kidnaps Elle, and the dangerously brooding Evert tells her to stay away from Niall, the art collector, but they never give a good reason, nor does Elle demand one. Why would she listen to them, when they don’t tell her why? Of course, she doesn’t listen to them and continues to see Niall, but that entire scene bugged me the whole way through, hence the 4 stars.
This is a different take on witches and vampires, and I would be interested to see where it goes next so I may buy the next in series once I’ve read the light, amusing novel I was looking for when I opened this one up!

Good start to a series, but a bit all over the place for me. Maybe we were meant to experience the same confusion as the main character while she tries to determine who the good guys are,who she can trust, and ultimately, what she is. Will read more in the series to see where it goes.

Phew! That was action packed, and I read through it like a speeding bullet train.

It starts as a "good little witch" story. Elle has been raised to be a just that.
But her insurance investigation soon has her uncovering more than a missing artefact.

I love how this is set in Edinburgh; a magickal city.
And I love the characters. I was rooting for Elle from the very start. I felt her confusion and pushed through it right along with her.
And Niall? Phew again. What a hottie!!

If you like witches and vampires then give this a read.

Great female lead

Imagine being led to believe you're this weak little thing only to find out you are so much more. I loved the strength of the lead female character, she definitely shone

An enjoyable start to the series

The story can use a final edit for wordiness, but other than that it has great character development, storyline and leaves the reader longer for more.

Enjoyed the fast paced story about a coven of witches who are smarter than werewolves and create havoc in `Witchy Business' by Eve Paludan. The mood is uptempo, especially, between two female rival witches in Edinburgh, Scotland. The one leading has the hardest time getting her subordinate to follow directions. This push and pull relationship reminds the reader of earthly mom and daughter catfights. Except that witches live for hundreds of years and the situation is just more complicated.

The earthly job description for the enchantress, Elle Chambers, is that she has an admirable reputation for solving insurance claims. So, when expensive insured articles are lost or stolen, she is called upon to find baubles, famous antiques, or world renowned and costly paintings. This talented detective-investigator skillfully unearths treasures and returns them to the insurance companies who are pleased with her track record and pay her well. She admits to using mystic powers, at times, but no one notices. Well, she says, she has to earn an independent living otherwise her life would be dull in-service to her coven. And she prefers her freedom to make her own choices.

Here comes trouble. Complications arise soon after she visits a new client and promises him her services. It doesn't hurt that he is out-of-this-world gorgeous. The problem is not with Niall but with her `leadership!' Suddenly, Elle is not only confronted by Rebecca but her disagreeable male reinforcement. As far as Elle is concerned, it is none of their business who she chooses to work for. But they make it their business and keep secrets from her, as well. According to them, they are protecting her.

Danger lurks. She is given choices. Although she's stubborn and brave, she cannot deny the threatening atmosphere. However, all their secrets make her all the more defiant and suspicious. What is the danger to her in accepting this job? Why don't they explain? Against her will, they want her to turn the job down. Why?

Elle uses persuasion on her `friends' and promises that she will do her detective work as fast as she can and get out of their way so they can pursue their business with her client. Is she being honest? Will she help them with a wretched plan? Maybe. Fine.

Not fine. Her client's chemistry seems to draw Elle to him in mysterious ways. Niall even talks her into visiting a crowded nightclub. He helps her discover hidden secrets about herself. She begins to question why she didn't learn these secrets from her mother and tutors. Danger is about to jump up and bite into Elle's `Witchy Business' plans.

Twisted scenes ~ full of surprises ~ captivate readers in `Witchy Business' by Eve Paludan. The dialogue is great and the storyline is highly energetic. It reads like an Alfred Hitchcock movie with tense suspense. That good![@Amazon Kindle]

I thought this was an alright read, though it didn't really do it for me. I don't even really know why but I finished with a bit of a 'meh.' I did enjoy the way the book played with the normal hero/romantic partner character. Often in PNR (I'm thinking Ward, Frost, etc here) the hero is some muscle-bound, leather clad, beefcake and the antagonist is the smooth-talking, well dressed, sophisticate. Both character types are present in this book, but the heroine's choice of mates is unexpected. The effect of this was that I spent the whole book waiting for the reversal, the point when the good guy suddenly reveals his betrayal and the heroine runs into the arms of the unexpectedly compassionate stoic man on the side. This never happened. It was a fun little twist and proof that sometimes it's not a matter of what's written, but what isn't that can add the most spice to a story.

But I also felt that the whole thing rolled along a little too smoothly. N. goes to great lengths to meet Elle, but we never discover how he even knew about her to begin with. We never learn when, why or how exactly he fell so deeply in love with her, unless it's just a matter of 'we're the only two like us so we should be together.' That seems pretty weak to me. There is defiantly some insta-love on Elle's part, however. Then there is Rebecca and Everett, who can blithely acknowledge Elle's burgeoning feelings and tell her to arrange to kill that person in the same conversation. Seems a little unrealistic to me. Could they really expect compliance? Elle solves the missing art case, seemingly without any clues and in the end manages to resume her life despite the coven's long standing policy of eradication against her kind. Yep, everything is resolved just a little too easily.

On a side note I also didn't find the book to match the description very well. The bad-boy werewolf is already found when the book starts and he's an overwhelmed lawyer with mother issues, not a bad boy at all. For most of the book Elle is a decidedly weak enchantress, not the damn good witch described. (In this particular story there is a divide between witches and enchantresses, so not the same thing.) And she isn't assigned back to back cases. She is an insurance agent who solves cases with a little magical assistance though and she is on the case of a missing piece of art. Maybe these are small details, but still...

Despite the above points, it was an entertaining enough read for an evening. The writing seemed fairly smooth and I didn't notice many, if any, editorial mishaps.

Top Notch mystery

This was a complicated, unique, and excellent paranormal mystery that fits in the cozy genre somewhat. The series seems a nice mixture of fantasy and cozy mystery with a few gritty characters yet it's not dark and depressing like some fantasy paranormal books. I really loved these characters and it's only the first book. The authors are excellent at creating that connection between the reader and the heroine that makes a story not just good but great.

Witches, and vampires, and werewolves oh my...
"Witchy Business" is the first in a series of novels by Eva Paludan and Stuart Sharp but - in keeping with my somewhat eccentric reading habits - it's the second book in that series that I've read. I picked it up because I thoroughly enjoyed the one I'd read previously even though books about witches, vampires, and werewolves aren't my favorite form of fiction. These authors, however, managed to rope me in by creating a strong female character as the protagonist (always a plus in my opinion) and making her an insurance investigator, not some lonely woman living deep in the forest casting spells and turning wandering princes into frogs. In short, because I'm someone who writes detective fiction, they managed to combine their interests with mine and, in the process write a novel that appeals to my literary taste buds.
And they did it well.
"Witchy Business" is part mystery (someone has apparently stolen a nearly priceless piece of art) and part romance with a pretty good fight scene thrown in for good measure. It's not overloaded with a lot of arcane magical terminology, which would make it very difficult for folks like me to read and understand, and it redefines vampires in a very intriguing way.
It is, therefore, not simply well written but also engaging.
Paludan and Sharp are veteran authors and they know their way around a narrative. They also know how to create interesting secondary characters who add to the story without distracting the reader. The plot has a couple of minor twists aimed at keeping the reader engaged but they aren't as important to the story as the story itself for this is also, in an odd sort of way, a coming-of-age novel in addition to being a mystery/romance.
It comes down to this: "Witchy Business" is a very enjoyable read about some very interesting characters.

Elle Chambers is a witch detective who works for Edinburgh’s coven. So when Ferguson Black, a Scottish solicitor and werewolf goes missing, its Elle’s job to find him and ensure this dangerous supernatural being doesn’t hurt anyone.

Elle’s liaison with the coven is Rebecca, a powerful witch who keeps her “supplied with investigation jobs that utilizes her unique talents.” You see Elle is an enchantress who is just beginning to understand her enormous witchy powers.

Elle also works for insurance companies checking to see if claims are valid. When she’s called to investigate an art burglary she becomes enchanted by Niall Sampson, a reclusive art collector whose magnetism entrances Elle.

The witch detective soon finds out Rebecca has questionable interest in Mr. Sampson and warns Elle to be very careful around this man the coven suspects to be a dangerous supernatural being. However, Elle is beginning to have feelings for the man.

Eve Paludan and Stuart Sharp write in Elle’s first person perspective as the protagonist investigates the Sampson art theft that becomes more curious by the second. As Elle does her investigation, readers meet magical creatures like a werewolf, a warlock, goblins, and of course vampires.

Witchy Business is elegantly written in a way that draws readers in and keeps us there until the exciting climax; which leads us into an enticing series of books: The Witch Detectives.

Loved, loved, loved this book. Its light, its well written, its fun and very addictive.
The story centres around Elle an enchantress that basically isn't aware of just how powerful she is, or really what she is, thanks to the coven. That was about to change thanks to Niall.
Finding out what she is, while investigating an insurance claim, is hard enough, never mind having people wanting to kill you.
This book just keeps on giving, and the story twists and turns, to keep you turning those pages.
I took a chance with this, and bought the box set. Sooooo glad I did, because as soon as I'd finished reading it, I went straight onto book two.

This story wasn't what I expected. With the title and front cover, I thought it would be a light, fun kind of witch story. I was surprised how dark it was and quite malevolent at times. I was surprised by the 'vampire' aspect of the story. I don't think I've ever heard of a vampire witch.
I did warm to Elle who had a lovely sense of humour.
I've given two stars because I found the dialogue irritating in that in nearly every conversation, the speaker mentions the name of the person they're speaking to. This is so unnecessary since a reader can remember the name of the participants.
Even so, this was a good story to read for those who like tales of witches and warlocks.

There are so many things wrong with this book… To mention one, it is set in Scotland, with a Scottish/UK cast of characters. Why then, would the presumably British protagonist say “pant suit”, “bangs”, or “dollars”, instead of trouser suit, fringe, and pounds Sterling???
Note to authors, in the UK pants are not worn on the outside, unless you’re Superman

I worried for a while but Elle came through and ended up with the prize. No all will be a perfect match for Elle. He will continue opening up the World for her.

Witchy Business :Witch Detectives 01

In A Nutshell: Witchy Business is a book for romantics.

The Protagonist: Elle Chambers is an enchantress witch and a sleuth.

The Plot: Elle must first find a missing bad boy who might or might not be a werewolf and an expensive piece of missing artwork.

A witchy business is the first book in a new series. It centres around Elle's journey of self-discovery and love. In finding love, Elle finds she has more powers than she realises. Elle has the making of an interesting character.

The book does not bode well as either a cosy or a paranormal mystery series. Unfortunately, Elle does not investigate any paranormal mysteries, which make the publishing blurb misleading. The story behind finding a missing werewolf person is at best a paragraph. It also has a sex scene with too much detail for it to be classified a cosy.

If you like paranormal romances, this may be the book for you.

I have a review!!! Witch and Famous the second in the Witch Detective Series By Eve Paludan and Stuart Sharp's is just as delightful, intriguing and suspenseful as the first. Our Enchantress Elle is coming into her powers and understanding more and more what she is capable of doing. She is POWERFUL , she is a detective for hire for Insurance companies and this time she is called out for a suicide of an up and coming recording artist, to find out if it was truly suicide or murder. Enter Victoria beautiful sad Victoria the murder victim's best friend. There is something about Victoria .... No spoilers... and we still have Niall, Elle's Love and mentor for her powers. There is tension between Elle and Niall , Niall is VERY secretive and doesn't confide in Elle.. is Niall responsible for the murder? could he do that all the signs point to him...There was magic involved in this murder Elle can feel it... we also get to know more about Elle's Friends in this installment, Siobhan, the eerily beautiful goblin, Fergie the Lawyer werewolf and his love interest Niall's assistant Marie.. This book is fast paced fun to read and twist and turns LITERALLY I didn't see coming and the surprise at the end.. well I was probably sitting with my mouth hanging open! Another WELL written Hit by Eve Paludan and Stuart Sharp.. I DEFINITELY recommend this series.. I give this installment 5 enchanted sparkling stars.. LOVED IT!!!!

I discovered this book by poking around J R Rain's books and I thought I'd give it a try, even though Witches aren't really my thing. It had me hooked pretty much from the beginning and I absolutely did not see the ending coming. I love a book with a surprise ending.
Witchy Business is the first in the series and after finishing it, I immediately bought the next one and began reading it.
The heroine, Elle, is an Enchantress and Insurance Investigator who often does work for the local coven. We know fairly early on that Elle's mother was a well-known, successful witch but we don't know what happened to her. We also know that Enchantresses are considered rare amongst the witches and Elle often makes comments about how little real power she has. Elle is hired for a case involving a stolen piece of art and things become interesting. She meets Niall Sampson and begins to question things she has known all of her life.
This is a very well written book, with interesting well-rounded characters. The action is fast-paced and I particularly enjoyed it being set in Edinburgh. If you like your female heroines to be able to think for themselves and take care of themselves, without being too perfect or too one -dimensional, then this is definitely a must read for you.
