Rate this book
The booklet "Women Looking at Women" by Annemarie Wadlow examines the ways women artists come together to collectively investigate their own image. It delves into various histories of feminist collective art practice and focuses on how women claim agency of their image through collaborations which connect intergenerational and long-distance friendships. Wadlow examines four visual case 'L'atelier des femmes peintres' (1833) by Phillippe-Jacques van Bree, 'Photographers at the Ovular' (1980) by Joan E. Biren, Carmen Winant's photobook 'Notes on Fundamental Joy' (2019), and the poetic essay 'Women as Columns of Pillars' (2019) by Josephine Mead.

Women as columns and pillars… Way too powerful as a small publication like this. Very well designed, I really need to fight off my urge to purchase it ><

This book is an informing and soothing essay about women and their arts practices. I loved how the author analyses art and texts and the relation between them. The author created a need narrative on women and arts by analysing Van Bree’s painting(s). She makes clear connections between our herstory and the here and now. It was easy to read and I loved the design of the booklet.

Looking for an ethos for alternative and active feminist ways of being/seeing and living, this book was invaluable. Also so beautiful to have had the concept be concentrated by its form- all women citations, delicate typographies, dreamy translucent pages made all by women’s hand. A marvel— cannot wait to lend this to a friend!
