This updated version of Healing Foods: Cooking for Celiacs, Colitis, Crohns and IBS , is a visually stunning and intelligently written cookbook. It is specifically designed to please and inspire all those who suffer from these debilitating intestinal diseases, as well as those who already live happier lives thanks to the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (TM). This book strictly adheres to the diet prescribed by Elaine Gottschall in her revolutionary book Breaking The Vicious Cycle . The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is a strict grain-free, lactose-free, and sucrose-free dietary regimen intended for those suffering from Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The SCDiet has proven to be highly successful for many who suffer from various bowel disorders as well as the many related problems which actually stem from imbalances in the intestinal tract. The diet was first proposed by Dr. Sydney Haas and brought to public attention by Elaine Gottschall, a biochemist who researched the diet to help heal her daughter who was suffering from severe ulcerative colitis. Her book Breaking The Vicious Cycle has sold over 1 million copies and relieved suffering for countless thousands.

I bought this cookbook because it seemed like a good idea at the time. I was already piling up as many Celiac cookbooks as possible and it made sense without a firm diagnosis to pick up cookbooks that applied to other things as well.
Unfortunately, reading this cookbook made me lose my appetite at times. There were recipes that simply sounded awful and those that sounded totally boring. I try not to judge recipes solely by how they sound but so far, the recipes I've tried from this book have been disappointing at best. I'm going to keep trying but for now, this will remain a 2 star review. Just because you have Celiac, Colitis, Crohn's, and/or IBS does not mean you should be limited to boring, tasteless food.
This is a great looking cookbook - wonderful pictures, but as far as recipes it's at the bottom of my SCD cookbook list. I bought it mainly for the sauces and condiments recipes that are jam packed in it, so it won't go to waste as a doorstop or anything, but if you are new to the SCD check out some of my other cookbook reviews to find books that will be better to start off with. This is a good one to get if you have cash burning a hole in your pocket, but there are others I'd purchase first.
I really liked this book. Everything was easy enough for me to make, I am not a really great cook, not a really bad cook either. Average level in the kitchen i'd say. The ingredients weren't weird things i'd never heard of. Everything tasted really really good! I am the one in the house with the health problems, but my husband ate it all up and asked for more!
Wonderful sauce recipes. LOVE the mayonaise, ketchup, and salad dressings. The best crusty onion rolls and chicken meatloaf. We have a son following the strickly SCDiet and I don't want to cook multiple meals. Great ideas for soups and entrees.
