This was the worse effing book I had ever read. I normally don't even write reviews, but this was so bad that I simply had to.
Reason 1: The dialogue was just HORRIBLE. It sounded like a normal everyday conversation. This meant long pointless dialogue that readers could do well without. And all the dialogue is about business, business, business. I skipped over these.
Reason 2: Why are ALL the girls beautiful??? Like seriously, the author described every girl as beautiful. There's no variety in the woman whatsoever. These examples below are of different women. "She was the prettiest thing" "Kalli thought she was the most beautiful woman she has ever seen" "those as gorgeous as Melody Fisher" "because she was absolutely stunning"
Seriously, I could go on forever, but for the sake of time, I won't.
Reason 3: The characters are given general, one-sided descriptions that lack depth. The character's personality is all we are given. Their feelings, backstories, and the way they see the rest of the world is a complete mystery. Mandasue does a poor job on the characters.
Reason 4: The setting lacks a bit of creativity. Mandasue sees the world in her story with her eyes. I think authors that see the story with their brains, nose, eyes, hands, ears, and most importantly, heart, are so much better authors.
The only thing that kept me reading until the very end was the plot. I admit that the plot was pretty good, and all I only kept reading to figure out what happened. Otherwise, I find the quality of the writing dreadful.
Wow what an amazing book,, it had me gripped from the first page all the way to the very end,, must've been the fastest book I've read and definitely will be reading more from this author I definitely give it *****
A women in a mans world, Jenna inherits a nightclub from her father, with no knowledge of how to run it, along comes gangster Tony and Ed, with the offer of help! throw in the love interest Vibes, and it makes, a good twisty read, loved some of the quirky characters.
I love the Mandasue Heller books I have read so far but I giving up with this one Was this when she just started out? It hasn't got the same fast pace twist as the other ones I have read. I hate not finishing a book.
This is a book about a club. About a club. That's it.
I was hoping this would be a book with an interesting plot line, a little adventure, etc. etc. Overall, it was a huge disappointment. Don't get me wrong, the book has a plot line--a long, drawn out, 545-page plot line about a club. 300 pages are devoted to introducing the characters that work in/own this club. The remainder make a mediocre attempt to describe some sort of action, and the last 20 pages or so sum up the entire book and what happened to the club after.
There is selective character development. You get a glimpse of who Tony Allen is, but what has he done? What makes people want to kill him other than him being mob? I don't know..
The author also makes a poor attempt (imho) of describing the budding romance or courting of two characters. They see each other for a bit because they work together, but they both think they're not available.. but despite that they fall in love with each other. He leaves for most of the book, she stays, he comes back and..
"Turning, Jenna saw him and threw a hand over her mouth. Seconds later she was in his arms, kissing him and telling him that she loved him too." Pathetic. There's nothing in there to make me believe that real love developed between the two characters.
Maybe I'm mistaken about the whole thing. It was a quick, easy read, but it was one of the most pointless read I've had in a long time.
I know the review doesn't say anything--I'm keeping it purposely vague not to spoil any plot lines, just in case someone has an inkling to read the book.
Another really gripping read which I read in one sitting.
Jenna ends up inheriting her fathers night club and although she is not keen to take it on she feels obliged to. Not knowing anything about running a business and certainly not a nightclub she goes into the venture with blind eyes.
She thinks that the only threats to her club are from the various other clubs in the area but unfortuently more corruption than she realises happens right under her nose. Thinking people are helping her out she ends up at the brink of losing her club, but does she have what it takes to redeem herself and her club?
I was a bit disappointed with this book. It seemed to drag on and on and about the halfway mark I felt like giving up. It was so predictable I could have told you the ending without continuing. However, not one to abandon a book, I plodded on with it. It didn't get any better and the ending felt rushed as though Mandasue was fed up with the plot as well. I've read a few other books by this author which I've really enjoyed so it's a shame about this one.
Disappointing read, really. Heller spends an awful lot of time on character development only to neglect the progress of the plot itself, which is flat and unsatisfying. I wouldn't really recommend it, it's just a lot of words that don't really make very gripping story.
A disappointing read a lot of time spent developing characters - but not not fully. There is a plot - but everything runs too fast, is not very believable and finishes without real closure. It seems to be more of a basic outline/first draft of a novel.
It started off with some hope and then it just want down hill. I expected some more intensity to the plot line but it was more about character development which got a bit boring. It was predictable and rather disappointing from an author I actually quite like.
Found this to be very long winded and dragged out, was waiting for the suspense as it had potential of being a really good read, but it just didn't materialise into anything, and the end was crap. Overall disappointed. recommend - The Game
