The short story "La noche de los feos" by Mario Benedetti constitutes a work of rare delicacy and quiet severity, an unflinching incision into the wound of human self-image, where the gaze of the Other becomes the mirror of an internalised rejection. Beneath its ostensibly simple narrative, Benedetti constructs a dense psychological landscape in which "ugliness" does not operate as a mere external attribute, but as the deeply embedded symptom of a psychic mechanism that has learned to reject itself before the world has the chance to do so.
The two protagonists are not simply bearers of physical "defects", but subjects who have internalised the social gaze as a harsh, almost punitive Superego. The man’s scar and the woman’s facial disfigurement are nothing more than the visible traces of an invisible trauma; the repeated experience of exclusion. The body becomes the site upon which social violence is inscribed, while the desire for connection falters against the impossibility of self-acceptance. The phrase "we are not beautiful" (or, at a deeper level, "we are not worthy of being loved") functions as an unconscious axiom governing their conduct.
Their encounter in the cinema is situated, from a realist perspective, within an urban environment that does not forgive deviation from dominant standards of beauty. These standards, products of a society invested in surfaces, operate as mechanisms of exclusion. Benedetti does not denounce them overtly; rather, he allows them to emerge through the silences and hesitations of his characters. Their "ugliness" thus becomes the reflection of a collective obsession with normality, one that is internalised as personal condemnation.
Yet the story exceeds mere social observation. At the point where realist attentiveness converges with psychoanalytic insight, a tragic paradox emerges, even when the protagonists encounter someone who mirrors their own suffering, they remain unable to transcend their internal barrier. The longing for union coexists with an equally powerful impulse towards withdrawal. When the woman asks for the light to be turned off, the gesture is not merely practical; it is profoundly symbolic, a retreat into darkness where the gaze, and thus judgement itself, is suspended.
Here, the deeper difficulty of loving and being loved is revealed, not as a consequence of outward appearance, but as the effect of an internalised conviction of unworthiness. Intimacy requires exposure, and exposure entails the risk of injury. The protagonists, partly unconsciously, choose to hold one another at a distance because "contact comes at a cost". It demands confrontation with the very core of their wound. Thus proximity becomes a threat, and the desire for connection a source of anxiety.
And yet, despite these defensive gestures, the human need for connection remains irreducible. The narrative is permeated by a silent, persistent search for the Other. Even within their awkwardness and their failure to achieve genuine union, the characters affirm the fundamentally relational nature of human existence. The tragedy lies not in their lack of desire for connection, but in their incapacity to sustain it.
The story’s key phrase "it is not easy to grow accustomed to the idea that someone might look at you without rejecting you", encapsulates this dual movement of desire and fear. It marks the moment when the Other’s gaze ceases to be condemnatory, yet the subject is not prepared to believe in its gentleness.
As literary figures, the two characters are sparingly drawn, yet endowed with remarkable psychological density. The man appears somewhat more reconciled, his ironic self-awareness functioning as a defensive strategy. The woman, by contrast, embodies a more immediate and vulnerable relation to her trauma.
He attempts to bridge the distance through language and observation; she responds through withdrawal and silence. Together, they form a dyad that reflects the differing articulations of the same wound.
Ultimately, Benedetti’s story is not merely about ugliness. It is a contemplative exploration of the human inability to accept oneself, even when the possibility of recognition is offered. Within its subtle, almost imperceptible tragic register, a profound truth emerges; that the greatest distance is not that which separates us from others, but that which estranges us from our own capacity to be loved.

Simplemente not my cup of tea.
