Chaffee County Search & Rescue is known for finding lost people in the Rocky Mountain backcountry. But they've never lost one of their own before.
Cam Torrens, author of Stable, has written another psychological thriller that will have readers racing to answer the question...what happened to Kristee Li?
Veteran pilot Tyler Zahn is finally recovering from the tragedies that cost him his family and drove him from the Air Force, when his best friend, Kristee Li, disappears on a remote search and rescue mission. A massive effort to find her fails. No clues. No body. Kristee is presumed dead.
A fellow team member claims the disappearance is no accident and Zahn begins to question what really happened in the mountains. Who would have wanted Kristee dead? More importantly...why? Plagued with grief, Zahn probes for answers while slowly slipping into the familiar depression he's worked so hard to escape.
False Summit proves when it comes to money, sexuality, and cultural norms, the truth is in short supply.

Thank you to NetGalley, Black Rose Writing, & to Cam Torrens for this ARC of False Summit: The Truth is Hard to Face...! This is an absolutely amazing thriller! If you want a book that has you hooked from chapter one, I seriously recommend reading False Summit. I literally could not put this book down.
False Summit is the second Tyler Zahn novel. I definitely believe you can read this one as a stand alone, but be prepared to read the first one afterward anyway because you'll be left desperate for more of Torrens' work. I for one cannot wait for a third book!
The characters are so well-written! Especially Tyler Zahn, who is just such a good person trying to do good even though he has his own struggles, and I loved every step he took trying to figure out what happened to his missing friend Kristee. Just such a compelling character. But that's true for mostly everyone in this book, they all feel like they could be people you know because they simply feel real. Honestly, I think that makes the stakes feel even greater.
False Summit is the kind of book that will remind you why you love thrillers. The story is a gripping read, and you'll be turning the pages needing to know what will happen next the whole time!
A Gripping Phycological Thriller. False Summitt by Cam Torrens is the second book in the Tyler Zahn series and is a fast-paced thriller. The book is a real page turner and will keep the reader on the edge of their seat. The book is set in the central Colorado Mountains in the town of Buena Vista. Kristee is an experienced SAR (search and Resue) team member who goes missing whilst they are on a Resue mission. There was an avalanche but what happened to Kristee is she alive or dead. Tyler Zahn and Kristee where remarkably close as Kristee had rung Zahn to talk to him about something before the SAR call came in. Zahn wastes no time trying to find out what happened in the mountains as it is a race against time and Zaine quickly concludes was Kristee disappearance an accident or something more sinister. The story is told alternatively by Kristee, Zahn Kristee’s partners, friends, and fellow team members. Just when you think you have figured out what happened Cam throws another twist in the story. Kristee has secrets, her identity, family culture, work and the sacrifices she will make for her sister. This book has a cast of characters which will grip your attention with a surprisingly remarkable ending that kept you guessing until the final pages. I look forward to more books from Cam Torrens this book is skillfully written a great phycological thriller which I highly recommend. Thanks to NetGalley and to the publishers of this book for giving me a free advance copy of the book to preview and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Cam Torrens writes in a way so that the reader feels like they are watching a video come to life. He uses attention to detail in both minute and mountainous ways to show the reader the world he's created. And the world is a modern, cutting edge setting where 21st century crimes come to life with motives older than time: greed, unrequited love, and betrayal of a friend. It is difficult to believe a reticent, retired pilot could have that much excitement in a small Colorado town, and he does. I only hope there are many, many more opportunities to solve psychological mysteries with Cam Torrens.... I mean Tyler Zahn.
Great book. Grabbed my attention and held it throughout. I was slightly annoyed with the ending, but it did end as it probably needed to. Will definitely check out more Zahn novels. Also, this reads fine as a stand-alone.
Wow! What a page-turner! False Summit tells the story of a woman’s disappearance and her friend’s propulsive search to find out what happened to her. Full of mystery and wonderful descriptions of the Colorado mountains, Cam Torrens keeps the reader guessing the whole time. Written in flawless prose with believable characters and surprising plot twists, False Summit is the second in the Taylor Zahn series. The story is told through the two alternating points of view: Taylor Zahn, a flawed but loveable not-quite-licensed investigator and Kristee, his friend, a search and rescue volunteer, whitewater rafting guide, and snowplower/gutter cleaner. Everything in Kristee’s life seems to go wrong at the same time, and, after she goes missing, Zahn follows his investigative instincts to try and find out what happened to her. This novel stood well on its own, with a few references to what happened in book one—just enough to add layers and make me want to go back and read that one too!
Torrens does it again with False Summit! I couldn’t put it down! He creates and builds his characters where you become a part of their lives. We met Tyler Zahn and Kristee Li in book one. False Summit takes these characters to the next level. You learn more about their life challenges and how this town rallies around their own. I haven’t read books like this in a long time and it’s so refreshing to pick up a book that captures your attention from page one. Thanks for another entertaining read!
This was a good book. I would consider this book more of a mystery than thriller as the story revolves more around putting the pieces together. Overall, this was a good book if you're more into mystery and detective work in the case of a missing person. I did not give this book 5 stars as I was expecting more of a thrill with the search and rescue background. Thank you Cam Torrens for reaching out!
Great story! Love the plot twists! Definitely kept me questioning each character. Love the characters, especially the main character Tyler. Great thriller. Must read!
I read numerous mystery novels and can usually anticipate the conclusion. Not this book! I was constantly changing my view of the finish. Very good book!
The brilliant sequel to Stable, False Summit is fast-paced, gripping and twisty!
Tyler Zahn is a great character - complex and intense, with a heart of gold and a fierce determination to protect those he loves. This book works well as a standalone, however the backstory from Stable, takes it up another notch, in my opinion.
When Tyler's best friend, Kristee, goes missing in the Rocky Mountains, he will not give up the search. Like Tyler, Kristee knows this area of the mountain range well and with no body found, Tyler holds on to every shred of hope he can muster.
Cam Torren's writing style enables the reader to watch the events unfolding like a movie in their mind, so vivid are his descriptions and so real are hi characters. A gripping page-turner!
5 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Cam Torrens and Black Rose for an ARC in return for an honest review.
Cam Torrens has written another brilliant novel in the second of the Tyler Zahn series. A friend goes missing in the dangerous Rocky Mountains and Tyler, overcome with grief, investigates confusing leads that challenge him mentally. Once again, a well-developed psychological thriller that is impossible to put down. Highly recommended read worthy of five stars.
Man, who ISN’T a suspect? So many twists and turns, and different suspects. There’s a lot going on here! I can’t say much more without spoiling anything, but it’s another great story from Cam Torrens!
Crisply written missing-person tale in two voices. Author Torrens hits it out of the park again in this second book in his Tyler Zahn series of who-done-it thrillers set in the gorgeous Colorado wilderness. Nature's power and human deviousness combine to keep the mystery's solution hidden until the final pages. Thank you to the author for the advance copy.
The setting of this novel is so beautifully evoked that one feels almost physically present in the Colorado mountains. From the opening pages through to the end, the reader is drawn into a mystery whose double-voiced narration becomes increasingly exciting, and the book is hard to put down. Vivid characters and complex twists propel the plot to a conclusion that no one will expect. An engrossing page-turner, absorbing and skillfully written.
I was lucky enough to receive an advance reader copy. Torrens has done it again! A thought-provoking story about relationships and communication wrapped inside an action-packed thriller with suspects at every turn like a Knives Out mystery.
I loved Cam Torrens' second Tyler Zahn novel even more than the first one. I couldn't put it down, all the way to the final page. As per "Stable," his first published book, I enjoyed the suspense and trying to figure out what was happening and why, but, even more, I loved Zahn's personality, ethics, honesty, and character. I hope that there are future Tyler Zahn books to come!
I was so excited to get this ARC because I love a thriller and I love the outdoors. Unfortunately, I was wildly disappointed. The thriller aspect isn't there and the outdoors setting is barely mentioned outside of how beautiful it is to live there and how remote and as an avenue for her to go missing.
First, the missing woman is Chinese and this is supposed to play into the family dynamics. But not only are the references sprinkled in like an afterthought. They call her black boyfriend a person of color, which is supposed to separate him from her, but she herself is a person of color. It's written like they wanted to make the cast diverse but didn't actually speak to a black or Chinese person to do it. Second, the majority of this book is focused on crazy circumstances that managed to pop up in the last two months before she goes missing.
Spoiler alert for the rest of this review.
Third, the circumstances that she gets into seem extremely unlikely. You're telling me that a badass, extremely competent SAR woman who is friends with multiple people in law enforcement was bribed into silence and then kept the silence because her reputation was threatened? Even once she found out it was legit drugs? Also you're telling me that her business partner was as stupid as they come, and left the key to the drug storage unit without considering that she could get a new key made for any office? And was just doing drug deals in the broad daylight in full view of multiple buildings? Fourth, was the surprise pregnancy really necessary? Again, you're telling me that an adult woman in this day and age didn't use multiple forms of birth control? It's not even mentioned. And she didn't notice a missing period for over a month? No woman I know. Lastly, the ending was mid. This man is getting attacked over his knowledge but she either was crushed in the rock slide or actually made it out? Really. There was all this build up and then it fell flat. It's like climbing a mountain and when you get to the top, there's a parking lot. Yea it's pretty, but it wasn't worth the effort.
I received an ARC of this book for review consideration but all opinions are my own.
Unconventional, action/mountain mystery Tyler Zahn is Kristee’s friend and Tyler happily acknowledges that it was Kristee who dragged him back from the brink. His work at the Search and Rescue brings him often to mountain treks and unfortunately that is when Kristee goes missing on a Search and Rescue mission. Just before that Kristee had something important to tell Tyler, but did not do so. The story then alternates from Tyler’s present to Kristee’s past as drugs, organ-selling and lesbian relationship becomes the focus of Tyler’s investigation. The mountains and the description of the treks were beautiful and brought it alive. The second half of the story moves at a fast pace as the two time lines finally weave together. Nikki, Karly, Lin Li, Randy, Perez, to a very small extent Zahn’s daughter too all come and play their part as the mystery keeps shifting, throwing new angles. I was surprised with the ending and it brought a smile and a degree of satisfaction too. Good enjoyable read.
Another great Tyler Zahn book! Beautiful but dangerous setting, a gripping storyline full of twists and turns, and great characters made for a real page turner. I can't wait for the next one.
“False Summit” is the perfect title for this intriguing psychological thriller/mystery that leaves you in suspense until the very end of the book. Set in the Rocky Mountains of central Colorado and the town of Buena Vista, the story evokes vivid images of the stunning scenery, recognizable in its authentic detail to any who know the area. The beautifully crafted narrative alternates between two first person accounts: one designated as “NOW” and the other as “BEFORE.” Both are written in first person present tense, which requires the reader to shift focus and point of view often, inadvertently becoming a shadow detective for the novel.
Tyler Zahn is the flawed but loveable character we know from Cam Torrens’ first novel Stable. His best friend disappears on remote rescue mission and Tyler refuses to give up, even after the official search is called off. He stumbles along trying to tie together the threads of information he gathers about the death of his friend and search and rescue colleague who has mysteriously disappeared. Like the many trails of his beloved mountains, the clues he finds sometimes lead to dead ends or dangerous drop-offs. But he is dogged and dedicated in his mission of searching for the truth and rescuing, if not his friend, at least her reputation and maybe an ending he can live with.
We also follow Kristee Li, the missing woman, in her “BEFORE” narrative that fills in some of the backstory and adds complexity and tension to the drama. She is an engaging character as well, who challenges the social/cultural norms around her and even bends the expectations of the genre. As we learn more about her life and unexpected connections in the town and beyond, many suspects arise in a complex web that Tyler tries to untangle. It’s all there: love, sex, mystery, money, crime, jealousy, intrigue, danger…all the elements that drive the plot. Yet there is much more: wonderful dialogue, nuances of humor and friendship, psychological struggles of identity and human frailty. And the imposing majesty of the mountains. It’s a great read.
I highly recommend this beautifully written, entertaining, and thoughtful book!
Kristie Li finds herself trapped in a complex web of challenges, constantly facing dead ends with seemingly no way out. Her life is an intricate entanglement, fraught with difficult circumstances that may lead to trouble if left unresolved.
In False Summit, Cam Torrens delves into the captivating life of Kristie Li, a Chinese American woman dedicated to her work in the Chaffee County Search and Rescue team, operating in the remote wilderness of the Rocky Mountains. While chronicling Kristie's journey, this psychological thriller also weaves the tale of Tyler Zahn, a veteran air force pilot who embarks on a relentless quest to find his missing best friend, presumed dead, after a remote search and rescue mission.
Within the pages of this psychological thriller, Cam Torrens exhibits an exceptional ability to shape a diverse cast of characters that truly embodies our shared humanity. Of particular fascination is Tyler Zahn, whose unwavering loyalty, resilience, and unwavering determination to unravel the mystery surrounding Kristie's disappearance captivated me as I immersed myself in this suspenseful narrative. The gripping plot of this novel ensnared my attention and compelled me to keep turning the pages. I found it exceedingly challenging to set the book aside at various points due to the relentless progression of the story. From start to finish, this tale held me in its suspenseful grip. Readers will relish the myriad twists and turns within this psychological thriller. Cam Torrens' writing effortlessly ensnares readers from the very outset, ensuring their continuous engagement throughout. The relatable nature of the characters he crafts resonates with our own human experiences.
False Summit: The Truth is Hard to Face engages readers with its well-crafted storyline and unforgettable characters. This psychological thriller will capture readers' attention and keep it till the last page. I recommend this gripping and thrilling read to anyone in search of an enthralling literary experience.
False Summit was as thrilling to read as Stable, the first novel in the Tyler Zahn series - perhaps even more so. Torrens’ latest novel uses small town politics, clandestine love affairs, and shady cryptocurrency dealings as the backdrop to the disappearance of a beloved member of the Search and Rescue team. This one is a true page-turner of a novel, and even though that term may be a bit overused, in this case, I really was turning pages late into the night.
Many writers can dream up a plot, drop it into a setting and breathe life into the characters by imagining themselves in their shoes and pondering what it would be like to be those people, living in that place, at that time. When the reader dives into one of Torrens’s novels, however, it’s as though they really are there, witnessing the story unfold, in a way that only a storyteller who has accumulated enough real-world experience can make happen.
As someone who once lived in the same area where False Summit is set, I can attest to the fact that the entirety of this well-detailed story - from the First Cast IPA sipped by the protagonist, to the unforgiving environment of the remote Three Apostles peaks - is as genuine as it comes.
Armchair adventurers, who may have never scaled a “Fourteener” or rafted the wild Arkansas River, will enjoy immersing themselves in this riveting, well-crafted world, which is absolutely authentic, but with a deftly woven fictional story placed masterfully within it.
If you have a spirit of adventure and love a good mystery/thriller, you’re going to love False Summit!
Troy Hollan - Author of Clucked - A Quirky Nautical Tale of Adventure, Misadventure and Justice Served
Author Cam Torrens returns with his sophomore novel, “False Summit.” After introducing readers to Tyler Zahn, flaws, skills, and all in his first book, “Stable,” he returns with more action-packed search and rescue.
Kristee Li, a real-life Wonder Woman in Z Man’s eyes. Having done all the 14ers Colorado has to offer and a level of competence for the Arkansas River rivaling Yo-Yo Ma’s knowledge of the cello, Tyler ‘Z Man’ Zahn knows there’s no better person to respond to a Search and Rescue (SAR) call than Li herself. So, when a call comes in for hikers missing on the Three Apostles trail, Zahn prioritizes his classes and stays behind to focus on his reserve deputy academy training instead. However, when Kristee doesn’t return he can’t shake the feeling that there’s more to her disappearance.
With alternating points of view from Tyler Zahn’s present predicament to Kristee Li in the lead up to her disappearance, readers begin to gather the unraveling pieces in Kristee’s life. Suddenly, we are left wondering if maybe her disappearance wasn’t an accident at all, and Zahn seems to be the only one determined to find her as he unwaveringly seeks to uncover the truth.
Bringing back beloved characters and introducing us to new, dubious personalities, Torrens’ newest in the Tyler Zahn series reads successfully as a standalone. Guiding us through the ins and outs of SAR, as well as the friendships and relationships within, this adventure is a thrilling ride! Cam Torrens uses his own expertise and knowledge to craft a realistic Buena Vista thriller. Buckle up and grab your 24-hour pack because readers are sure to fly through Tyler Zahn’s latest adventure.
False Summit is a crisp, terse thriller that grips you from the very beginning. Tyler Zahn’s good friend Kristee, an experienced and adventurous colleague on the Search & Rescue team, is missing. No one knows if her disappearance was the result of bad luck, an accident, foul play, or even intentional. All those alternatives play out through the course of the story.
There is no shortage of potential bad guys, from her sketchy mother and her sketchier business partner, to her abusive neighbor, to her current boyfriend and another man who has loved her for ages. Oh, and let’s not forget the new lover whose hair trigger is touchy indeed. Like Tyler, you’ll find yourself questioning the motives of all of them, and wondering just how far these potential villains would go
Bit by bit, Tyler pieces together Kristee’s life, offering clues about what really happened to her, and what was happening in the very messy weeks leading up to her disappearance. Despite some questionable choices, Kristee’s pile of troubles all stem from her trying to do right by her little sister, redeeming any brief doubts you might have about her character. Torrens does an excellent job working through the arguments in Kristee’s mind as she settles on various courses of action.
I loved all the characters in this book, who are vividly drawn with minimal words, like the book overall. Now, I have to go back and read the first book in the Tyler Zahn series, to get ready for the third book, Scorched, which comes out soon.
I just finished reading False Summit and I'm still reeling from the roller-coaster ride. The story takes you at break-neck speed through the perils of working on a search-and-rescue team in the mountains of Colorado. This full-of-tension atmosphere goes up several notches after one of the team, Kristee Li, goes missing while on an SAR mission. Is she really missing? Was she hurt in a rockslide? Did she run away? Is she dead? Did one of the bad guys in the story -- and there are several -- do her in? Or did she do herself in, unable to cope with threats from violent criminals, a relationship with a scarily obsessive partner, financial problems, and family troubles?
If Kristee was killed, was the killer her partner in her new business venture, a group of offices for short-term rentals? He and his goons threaten her when she discovers he's not only involved in an illegal crypto enterprise but a major drug business, as well. Then there's her menacing neighbor, hired by Kristee’s greed-obsessed mother to keep track of her daughter -- so she can keep track of her daughter's finances.
The POV alternates between Kristee and her close friend and colleague, Tyler Zahn, giving us different perspectives on the events. Though Tyler gives the reader a straightforward account of what's happened, Kristee Li is an unreliable narrator -- my favorite kind.
You read until your eyes are begging for a break. And then you keep reading.
False Summit: The Truth is Hard to Face by Cam Torrens is the type of thriller that can’t be put down until you reach the last page. I enjoyed the first book in the Tyler Zahn series that is set in Rocky Mountains and revolves around a search and rescue team, so I was really happy to receive an advanced review copy from Net Galley. I certainly was not disappointed! The story opens when Zahn’s good friend and highly experienced mountaineer and member of the SRA unit, Kristie Li disappears on a rescue mission. Was it an accident? Did she disappear on purpose? Or did someone make her disappear? Like peeling back layers of an onion, we learn little by little the challenges that Kristie had been facing with her precarious financial situation, her uncertain love life, her intimidating next-door neighbor, and her unscrupulous business partner. Everyone is a suspect, but Zahn will not rest until he uncovers the truth. This thriller is ideal for a person likes me who likes a good, fast-paced story without gory and graphic details. A strong five-stars and I’m already looking forward to the next volume in the series.
Who knew so much danger and drama lurked under the surface of the bucolic mountain town of Buena Vista, Colorado? Cam Torrens' intrepid hero, Tyler Zahn, is determined to figure out the mystery of his friend Kristee's disappearance while on a search and rescue mission.
At the same time, readers get to see what preceded her vanishing with an intimate view into her complicated life—with sketchy criminals for business partners, a dangerous redneck for a neighbor, mixed-up love affairs, and an estranged mother who wants back into her life at the worst possible moment.
As in his first book, Stable, much of the joy of reading this one comes from watching Zahn, a retired Air Force commander, work the mystery while coming to grips with the losses he suffered in the military and his family. Zahn is not alone in his quest. Torrens brings back many of the realistic and likeable players from Stable—especially the laconic sheriff’s deputy Perez and FBI Agent Williams—whose interest in Kristee’s fate is sharpened by their competition for her affections.
Prepare for a bumpy and exciting ride as you enjoy this book.
False Summit is a spell bounding, dual-time thriller that investigates the disappearance of a search and rescue worker, Kristee, during a rockslide in the mountains of Colorado. Was Kristee murdered? Did she disappear on purpose? Or was it an accident? The pacing of the book is tight and compelling, keeping the reader constantly guessing as to Kristee’s fate.
Torrens keeps the reader on edge by weaving multiple narrative threads, giving this broad cast of characters all a strong motive to cause Kristee harm. Each character is flawed, relatable, and therefore suspicious. The dual point of view—Kristee from the past, Reserve Deputy Sheriff Zahn in the present—draws out the suspense in expert fashion. The reader, along with Zahn, gets puzzle pieces that they must put together in the right order to find the truth.
Highly recommend for fans of C.J. Box and Harlan Coben. Five stars!
