The Man Upstairs

There’s nothing more dangerous than someone who has nothing to live for…

The man upstairs in apartment six doesn’t belong here, in our rundown block on the slum side of the city.
High-class and educated, suited and booted, and at least thirty years my senior.
Yes. Thirty whole years.
But that doesn’t matter, he’s absolutely gorgeous.

What does matter is, they say he’s a disgraced teacher that preys on his college students. A filthy, sick man, who deserves prison.
Other residents are always repeating the same morbid mantra.
Rosie, don’t ever talk to that dirty freak upstairs, no matter what. Don’t you dare!
So, I did what I was told and stayed out of his way, and I never, ever talked to the man upstairs.

Not until one crazy bad night, in total desperation, when I had nowhere else to turn…

This book disgusted me. The more I read, the more uncomfortable I was feeling. I actually felt sick in some parts of this.

What this book includes:
❌ 30 year age gap
❌ Grooming
❌ Manipulation
❌ A 48 year old disgraced man
❌ A vulnerable, impressionable and sheltered 18 year old
❌ A mother who really had no business being one
❌ Delusions (massive fucking delusions)
❌ An author desperate to normalise inappropriate relationships

I mourned reading this book. It is the only way I can describe it. I was sitting in shock reading this. I mourned an 18 year old who threw her life, her agency and her wits out the window for a man. There were no heroes in this book, only those who were complicit.

Rosie was such a vulnerable character. An 18 year old girl, who didn't get to have a conventional childhood; she never really got to be a child. She was her mother's keeper for so long that being the parent is all she really knew. Her life was consumed by making sure her mum was on an even keel; it left no room for Rosie's life outside of her. Rosie was ripe to be taken advantage of and she was.

Julian was the villain in this story. He took a young girl and turned her into his own personal sex slave. That's really what she is when it boils down to it. He makes her quit her job, so she can fully commit to him. She was isolated before, but now by being with him, all she knows is him and his wants.

Julian is a 48 year old former Professor of English at Oxford University. The man had it all - a wife, two children, a grandchild, a glowing career and living the high life. But, underneath it all Julian was somewhat of a sexual deviant. He was addicted to fucking teenage girls, tying them with rope and marking them all over their bodies in obscenities.

Now, I don't give a shit what people do behind closed doors, but when you are doing it with teenagers (I don't care if the AOC is fucking 16) you don't do that shit with people whose prefrontal cortex hasn't fully developed yet. YOU are old enough to know not to go through with it.

If this man was really remorseful over what he had done to his family, particularly his daughter, one WOULD think that he would move away and work on himself and get some help and then when some time and progress had been made, if he was very lucky, he would be allowed back into the lives of his family and that of his children.

Sadly, that was not the case. No, this was a fucked up redemption story and HEA for Julian.

There was some very worrying thoughts running through Rosie's mind, the poor girl was delusional:

"I'd loved to have written him a glowing piece of adoration for everything he was and everything he'd blessed me with. Everything from a place to stay, to muesli in the morning, to coconut conditioner. For showering me with attention, and want, and making me feel like I was really worth something."

" I could do this...I could seduce the man upstairs and behave like the girl in the photo. I could do it. I could be that girl."

"Maybe I wasn't as good as the girl in the photo? ... Was I too desperate? Too needy? Too stupid for a professor like him?"

"I want to be the girl in the photos."

"Do it, fuck me. I want to be the girl in the photos!."

Incase you weren't aware, Rosie wanted to be the girl in the photos...

"...just wanted to live up to his wants. His needs."

"...to make sure I was the slut dreams are made of-especially Julian's"

"Don't ever choose them over me, please... I'll be better than any of them, I promise."

"Julian was right. He'd given me the courage of my convictions. I had no sense of fear at the prospect of college tomorrow. I felt invincible in my own skin, and I had Julian to thank for that."

I was sickened by this.

The introduction of a friend for Rosie in the form of Lola, another teenager living with a 40 year old man, commiserates with Rosie and tells her its ok and fuck what everyone thinks. Rosie and Julian become the best of friends with Lola and Peter, as like attracts like.

The smut in this book was giving me the ick. And the obsession with the fucking whisk was even weirder.

The mother finally accepting their relationship all because she read Julian's manuscript about their love story was insane. What mother would allow this shit to happen and then let it go on??

The ending was hilarious though. Rosie convinces Julian to move back to Oxford. Why in the name of god would you move back and rub your relationship and all the shit you have done to the people you are supposed to love the most? It was clear that Julian would never change and not even his children were enough to make him realise this. These poor fucks had to endure daddy's new life on home turf. The utter selfishness of it was breath taking.

They all end up attending Rosie's 21st birthday in the epilogue and everyone is playing happy families and Julian is engaged to Rosie. Their life consists of fucking all day every day while they share a home office where he writes smut and she blogs about it.

And after all that, I kept thinking what was their love based on? It was based on nothing. It was a simple infatuation on Rosie's part and as for Julian? it was all about his own selfish needs and having an impressionable, vulnerable teenager was the only way he could be in a relationship with someone who put him first in everything and be there solely for his wants and needs and that is exactly what he got.

Verdict: If you like Taboo but have boundaries, I don't think this will work for you. If you don't have boundaries and are a hardcore Taboo fan, then this could just be the book for you.

The Queen of filth has done it again. Hot AF 🥵The author is one of my one-click authors; when she announced she was writing an extreme age gap, I was beyond excited.

Make sure to go in with an open mind. The Man Upstairs is not for everyone, and there are many morally grey areas. Luckily it’s for me.

Julian is forty-eight, shunned from his family for his addictions, and at the lowest point of his life. Rosie is the girl downstairs, eighteen and wise beyond her years. Desperate for help, she goes upstairs to get help from Julian. Julian becomes Rosie’s filthy savior, and Rosie becomes Julian’s dirty Angel.

I will never, ever look at a whisk the same again; so freaking hot. Also like, I need to buy stock in Sharpies after this book. I see a ride of women buying them; myself included; I would let Julian write dirty things on me.

Besides all the spice, there is a great love story between two people that are quickly judged by society. Especially Julian. Did he make mistakes? yes. He owns them. It’s not so black & white. There is a ton of grey.

I would love to have an extended epilogue. But that is me not wanting the book to end.

Spoilers spoilers

I don’t know how I feel about a thirty-year age gap with a man that likes sleeping with barely legal girls 🥴. It’s his kink. He’s a husband, father, GRANDfather, yet he has a kink where he degrades teenagers .

Maybe if he ONLY wanted the h or the h was his kink I could read this, but for him to have done this many times before makes it less palatable to me.

He’s a cheater… what happens when the h gets older? She’s no longer going to be a “teen”ager… meanwhile he’ll be 60 to her 30… and then what? Sigh…

The h is definitely getting the shortest end of the stick here 😏

I've been struggling with The Man Upstairs for a few days, so I decided to throw in the towel.

It hurts to DNF this one, really, it's such a shame! I was so excited after reading the blurb! But it's lacking the edginess I was hoping for. Besides, I can't feel any chemistry between the MCs. 🫤

There's something missing in the h, I can't pinpoint what. She's too eager to be "the girl he needs", which doesn't sit well with me.

As for Julian, when he's not doing dirty things to her, he's too paternal towards her (one of the reasons I can't feel their chemistry). There's no balance.

I am stopping where Rosie finds a new friend ( Lola ), it feels contrived and convenient.

I've read quite a few books by this author and like Jade West's bold and fearless writing.
In this case, too bad there is always a first time for everything. 😒

The premise of this story:

+Previous school teacher, now registered sex offender (not sure if in the book he's registered but irl he would be) moves into grungy apartment.
+In his inner mono he's talking about how he's a sex addict, would do it all again and even now can't stop fantasizing about his new 18 year old neighbor:

I, Julian Lockley, am a sex addict, who likes the degradation of barely legal girls. And the saddest thing of all? The God’s honest truth of it? If I could go back in time, I wouldn’t change my ways. I wouldn’t have the restraint to keep my filthy dick in my pants and not take advantage of the pretty little princesses on offer. Even now, on the edge of taking my life, I could feel my sexuality bubbling away under the surface, like a pool of filth brought back to life. Rosie. The girl downstairs.

The heroine is an idiot to think she's different than the other girls. As soon as she ages out of his fantasized ideal woman he'll move on to the next teenager. The author established very quickly that this guy has a repeating pattern. This made me realize in the age gaps I've enjoyed the men had previous wives or girlfriends that were age-appropriate and that they resisted or had more angst about the age gap.

And both of these MCs were immature. Dumb, naive 18 year old paired with a man so lost in his own sex addiction he tanked his career and ruined his marriage. Not the kind of taboo I want to read about, sorry.

Someone told me recently that the difference between erotica and romance was with romance, you could remove the spice and the story would hold up. This book disputes this stance brilliantly. It is so romantic in a pure sense, yet the romance stems from the spice, and it is kinky af at times too!

As always with a Jade West story there is phenomenal character development and juxtapositions that make the reader think. The shades of grey are painted with poise and respect. I also adore the way Jade West explores poverty, especially in England, and provides almost Cinderella moments. These are not the Billionaires' assistants who are struggling to pay their rent in London whilst sipping cocktails with the ladies on Friday evenings, these are characters who have been dealt a rough hand, yet manage to climb by themselves, with someone by their side.

Oh, and back to the spice, think Carolina Reaper on steroids! I had to pause several times to grab a toy seeing the other half wasn't around!

Finally, I want a Jade West range of kitchen gadgets, if you get my drift...

Thanks to Jade for the early copy.

Type: Standalone
POV: First Person - Dual

Everyone in town, including Rosie Flynn, knew of Julian Lockley’s reputation. She did her best to avoid him until a desperate situation forced her to face him and find the truth about the man upstairs.

I wanted to possess her like a little doll and play her body through every known game there was to play, and there was no denying it.

I liked both Rosie and Julian and the situations they were thrown into with dealing with their families. I also like the progress moved organically. True to the author’s style, this one was filthy. The book was slightly longer than I preferred, but I enjoyed the overall story.

The Man Upstairs is a story of forgiveness and acceptance. It would appeal to readers who enjoy erotic age-gap romance.

Note: The whisk. You know if you read it lol!

At 18 years old, Rosie Flynn accepted many responsibilities of the household and balanced her work with college. When circumstances changed with her mom, Rosie took action but there were consequences. Unexpectedly, help came in the name of Julian Lockley.

“I wanted to defile and consume and deflower the beautiful princess in front of me.”

Narrated in dual POV, the character development is steady and at a realistic pace considering the stigma associated with their age gap relationship and Julian’s past. Together, Rosie and Julian are kindred kinksters and this leads to an immediate mutual trust. As they experiment, their connection intensifies and heightens the confidence of each.

What I love about Jade West books is how she makes the tribulations of an average person relatable without any pretense and she delivered in this book. On another note, the filth factor is thankfully always high, and while Julian is quite the dirty man, I wanted a little more variety. That said, there are some combustible scenes that will whisk the reader into a frenzy. Lastly, the family dynamics added dimension to the story.

The Man Upstairs is about overcoming stereotypes. This book would appeal to those seeking an age gap romance.

The FILTHIEST book I’ve read this year and I definitely wasn’t prepared. Still processing my feelings…

“I, Julian Lockley, am a sex addict, who likes the degradation of barely legal girls” *chokes on air* 👀

So there’s a 30ish year gap between them. He has a kink for big age gaps and filth. And he has a wife, kids….and a grandchild *gulp* 😦😧 yes he is a grandpapa!

SMUT 3000 🌶️⚡️ super filthy and only for the bravest souls! Very much play on the age gap, fmc’s innocence and her corruption. He does feel guilty for corrupting her so semi-redeemable mmc BUT MASSIVE SIDE EYE 👀 the smut was actually quality but I just couldn’t get behind the whole situation. The language is very filthy and there isn’t a thing this man won’t do…

🌶️ there’s a WHISK obsession…like the kitchen one

🌶️ he loved to write on her with marking pens!

🌶️ he writes erotica stories & they reenact them

Massive trauma on both sides and issues either addiction. It’s a lot! Please check trigger warnings before reading!

age gap (30 years!)

There's something so unfiltered about JW's writing that I eat up every single time.

There's so much to talk about with this one- There was a lot that I liked and a lot that I didn't- but ultimately it got me out of a huge slump, and I actually really enjoyed it overall.

I went back and forth on how I felt about this book. I get age gap and kink but Julian was depraved. I don’t care how much JW tried to justify it and make us feel like this is a real romance, I was left feeling really uncomfortable. I have read her other books that have all kinds of kinks but this was too far for my comfort level. Poor delusional Rosie who happened to be into everything he did to her. She didn’t once say no to some of activities which for me made it worse. This depraved man falls in love with a naive and sheltered 18 year old virgin and she is into EVERYTHING every kink he showed her?! Also the theme of Julian is good man who has dark thoughts and it shouldn’t have been an issue because the 18 yo‘s wanted it or enjoyed it felt utterly disgusting. To read Rosie justify and defend him to his brother! Ugh. Im so mad I read this. Taking a break from taboo smut. Back to Alien smut for me. Give me a dragon with 2 peens any day over a sexual predator romance.

DNF 26%: It's going to have to be a big no for me.

I could write a very long review going on and on about how squicked out I was while reading this, but I have no energy. I just want to say as a big fan of Jade West and age-gap, unconventional romances the 30 year age-gap along with the MMC still being married while he's with the FMC, was a bit much for me. The MMC just came off creepy and sad, taking advantage of and grooming a young and vulnerable teenager.

This was deep. I mean who are we to judge one's kink? Are we not aroused by what we deem fit? I loved the undercurrent in this novel. Could a man be justified in his proclivities?

description
I enjoyed the ride of Julian and Rosie. I hope that she makes a book two with a new couple that would be exquisite. This book is dark. I mean the kind of stuff you will think on while you sleep. The descriptions and depth are very frequent. Do read this if you are pussy in anyway. I'll admit I skimmed a few pages. But not because it was too much, but I just didn't' want to go through it again.

I wanted Julian's redemption so badly, and I wanted Rosie rescued. In the midst of the battle they do end up in a better place. Jade definitely gave us that HEA. But it was dark.

In true Jade West fashion, this book is pure smutty filthy perfection and as always, I am so fucking here for it.

Julian and Rosie have a huuge age gap (which are my favourite in books) but their story is so much more than the filthy things they like to do together. It's filled with so much love, struggles for acceptance and addiction. They bring out the best in each other, and I loved reading Julian building his life back up.

This book won't be for everyone, for one it has a big age gap of 30 years and very graphic sex scenes but if you've read anything by Jade before - sit back and enjoy the filthy ride.

Wow, I'm not entirely sure that I have read a book with an age gap so big. Who cares, I absolutely loved every delicious, naughty, and dirty second of it.

Rosie is 18, going to college and working. She lives with her mum and her constant on and off again abusive relationship with her boyfriend, Scottie.
One awful night thing's get so bad that leads her to seek help from the man upstairs.

Rosie is a temptation and dangerous fire to Julian's addiction.

This story is hot, steamy, and kinky AF, that's not all, though. It's much more than this.

The man upstairs has trigger warnings, so check those before reading.

Jade West really gave us a fantastic read. One for the favourites shelf.📚

Jade West's The Man Upstairs is a panty-melting romance that will keep your summer even hotter than it already is. If you're looking for a deep and twisted scenario, you'll want to pass; but if you're in the mood for a dirty, easy, entertaining book, it is definitely for you. The author delivered a classical plot, but her imagination concerning the spicy scenes definitely knows no bond. I needed more, and at first, I thought I would find it. I didn't. That being said, I still had a good time lost within the pages.
Enjoy!

This has taken me over a week to get 66% in which is extremely unusual. I’m a 1 book a day kind of reader but this felt like it was dragging and I didn’t care to even pick my kindle up and when I did I didn’t even remember what the last thing was I read. I had to DNF. It was way to long and repetitive the sex isn’t even good. It felt like it was trying too hard to be as depraved as possible but it honestly fell short. I was just not into either character.

They were very boring and for such a long book to be more than halfway and it was just a whole lot of them in the apartment barely being outside. Everyone’s reactions and personalities were off. Trisha was over the top and her mother was an asshole. There wasn’t anything I liked about this to be honest and it wasn’t for the reasons you’d assume. I don’t care if he would’ve been 60 years older, age gap doesn’t bother me and I’ve read better degradation in books so I think it all just fell flat and like I said sadly it was boring.

Wow! I just finish and speechless, really.
The first teaser I've read when I learned Jade going to release this book, I was excited for all the dirty smut.

"...I, Julian Lockley, am a sex addict, who likes the degradation of barely legal girls. And the saddest thing of all? The God’s honest truth of it? If I could go back in time, I wouldn’t change my ways. I wouldn’t have the restraint to keep my filthy dick in my pants and not take advantage of the pretty little princesses on offer..."

This book is so much more than smut.

Julian's sin, for me, was debatable. One glance you see this perverse old man who preyed on the young girls. Using his position of power over them. A lying, cheating, an imposter.

Ot is he really?

But, like I said before, Jade made Julian's character a good debate.

And Rosie. For me it wasn't changing in character. Rosie's character was blooming. Love can do that, isn't.

The smut part? Oh lawwwd have mercy. It was beyond filthy. I applause Jade for her ability to create those utter steamy scenes! Absolutely mind blowing depraved!

I was left speechless at the end. For expecting smut at first but getting so much in return.

"...Rosie’s soul was pure and innocent, fit for a storybook princess. She really was a Cinderella. Shame I wasn’t a Prince Charming. My version of the story wouldn’t be fit for schoolyard reading, that was for certain..."

Overall Rating - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The blurb for this book got me running to sign up! “A filthy sick man” and “a dirty freak” - I couldn’t wait to read all about!

Rosie had always been warned to stay away for the man upstairs, which she did, like the good girl she was, however, a incident drove her to his door and he became a hero to her.

Julian had been shunned by his family for his dirty ways and adultery with barely legal girls and was in a deep depression. He ended up in Crenham Drive ready to give up. But after the night Rosie chapped on his door, he knew he had something to live for.

Jade has a reputation for writing the dirtiest, kinkiest scenes and this book did not disappoint. I know I’ll never look at a whisk the same way again 😏. But if you take out all the sexy stuff, the books leaves a good story of two souls meeting and healing each other, regardless of the age gap, love knows no bounds.

I loved Rosie’s character and how she flourished. She started of as someone who was more of the mother in her relationship with her own mother, always trying to keep her happy, but when she found Julian, he gave her a different kind of confidence and her maturity grew.

I really liked Julian’s character and how he look after and cared for Rosie. He wanted to show her the world and everything that she was worth. And that man has the kinkiest side. I’ve read a lot of romance and Julian is my first who loves a sharpie. I want him to write all over me!

The book was low on angst but was a good story and I loved the ending and the forgiveness for Julian.

This book has a few triggers, please take note of them.

i read too many reviews beforehand and it made me imagine the fmc being younger than 18 when i read it and i got too weirded out 😭😭

i also don’t like how the mmc was a cheater in his marriage, and how the fmc is so desperate for him that she’s fine if she cheats?? like it makes her seem like she’s 15 - not 18.

alsoooo, i’m usually fine with the Hero’s being with the heroine even if she’s 18 - but this guy has a type. it’s different from other books where the guy coincidentally falls for an 18 year old. no - this guy like “barely legal” girls, even though his daughter is older than that. it just makes me uncomfy because does that mean once the heroine gets older - he’ll stop liking her??

i am the biggest advocate for men being obsessed with their women, so i don’t like the idea that he’ll outgrow his attraction to the heroine when she grows up :////

alsoooo, i like it when the H is obsessed with the h from the get go, and doesn’t even look at other women. but this guy has PRINTED OUT PHOTOS of one of the 19 year olds he fucked - with a huge dildo in her and writing all over - in HIS WARDROBE… and the heroine is only turned on by it?? she’s not even jealous - which i don’t get. even though they aren’t together together atp, it feels cheater-y
