Writing has always been my passion. It was my favourite hour a week at primary school, and I started on my first, truly abysmal book as a teenager. So it wasn’t a difficult decision to study literature at university which led to an MA in Creative Writing. I spent a long time writing kids’ books, including funny fairy tales, dystopic adventures and serious issue-based YA, before switching to murder mysteries last year.
I grew up in a crime fiction family and spent a long time dreaming up the idea for my detective Izzy Palmer’s debut novel. A Corpse Called Bob is my first full-length book for adults in what is already becoming a long series.
I’m a Welsh-Irish-Englishman originally from South London but now living with my French/Spanish wife and slightly muddled daughter in Burgos, a beautiful city in the north of Spain. I write overlooking the Castilian countryside, trying not to be distracted by the vultures and red kites that fly past my window each day.
This was a smashing good instalment! So trippy and with a killer plot twist. (No pun intended.) Very early on, I had a hunch about “wouldn’t fit be crazy if it was X?” Little imagining I would be right.
Christopher really comes into his own in this one, and Albert… dear old Albert. There’s hope for you yet.
Content: 1-2 d*mns; very dysfunctional family dynamics; man has a paramour and it’s hinted they’ve slept together; accidental nondescript mention of male nudity
This one was a whole lot of fun. Since when aren't they? But seriously, the mother in this book is just awful, and the family's reaction to her death? Whoa... But there they are for Albert's bachelor night before the wedding and boom! Murder. And of course, Albert looks guilty. But the best part of this is how FAST they have to figure out who did what so they could "get to the church on time" for the wedding. Lord Edgington is really pushing Christopher these days, and I love that. In a lot of ways, this is the BEST of them, but there was one little part that felt a bit much. Still, I loved seeing Albert really come into his own in this one. There might be hope for that dolt. :D
I love mysteries but I don’t spend much effort trying to predict who the culprit is. This time? I had a hunch, and what do you know, after twists and turns and misdirections, I was right! That was a surprise. As always, Benedict Brown comes through with humor and well-researched historical details.
Wow! Excellent surprise this time! Fantastic storyline and setting. Very entertaining and engaging, even though the story technically ends in a bummer. 😂
This book took the top spot in my favorite Lord Edgington novels! What an excellent book! The gang is all set for Albert and Cassandra's wedding. The night before the wedding the couple switch houses to be with their potential in-laws. Having never met his fiance's brothers, Albert and Christopher have no idea what they are getting into. A raucous evening leads to an early night for the soon to be wed Albert and his brother. When they awaken on the big day, a murder has taken place. Now it is up to Lord Edgington and Christopher to figure out who the killer is so that the wedding can go on. Racing against the clock, they learn just how kooky the family is and are at their wits end with the lot of them before the pieces fall together. What a great story!! The characters just keep getting better and better with each novel. If you only want to read one book from this series, make it this one and you'll end up reading the rest because it is that good! Highly recommend!
Chrissy's brother Albert is getting married to a duke's daughter! The night before the wedding, the family's tradition is for the bride to spend the night in the groom's household, and vice versa. Accordingly, Albert, Christopher, and Lord Edgington head over to the ducal estate to party with her dad, her 3 brothers, and her domineering mother.
After the bride's lordly ex-fiance and her brother Charles' lover show up to complete the group, the evil mother is murdered and Albert wakes up in the morning covered in blood. Since he's even more useless than Chrissy, it's immediately obvious to anyone who knows him that he didn't do it... but who's trying to frame him, and will they succeed?
This was a really twisty mystery and I enjoyed it! Though actually, when they figured out how Albert's bloody fingerprint might have ended up at the scene, I had a strong feeling about who I thought was the culprit... after all, how many people could possibly know
In preparation for Albert's upcoming wedding, Albert, Chrissy, and Lord Edgington will spend the night before the wedding with the bride's family at Hinwick House. Meanwhile, Cassandra will spend the night with the groom's family at Cranley Hall. In this manner, both the bride and groom hope to develop a closer relationship with their future in-laws. Hinwick House was a fancy manor, but the children and staff seemed to live in fear of the Duchess, Lady Begonia Fairfax. Even her husband, Samuel Fairfax, seemed intimidated by her. After the Duchess left for the evening, the boys, including Albert and Chrissy, decided to go with Samuel to the Great Room, have a few drinks and let their hair down. The result is a total onslaught by her sons of complaints regarding how mean, hateful, and controlling the Duchess truly is.
Eventually Albert and Chrissy decide to head up to their rooms to get some sleep. Before heading upstairs, Albert calls Cranley Hall and speaks with Cassandra. She apologizes for not warning him about her brothers and her parents, especially her mother. Chrissy is suddenly awaken by a scream, followed a short while later by a second scream. The Duchess is found on the staircase. She is dead, having been stabbed in the back. Rather than being upset, the three sons seem happy that their mother is dead.
Who killed the Duchess? Was it a family member or somebody else? Can Lord Edgington and Chrissy solve the mystery before the wedding? Will the wedding still take place?
Benedict Brown has another wonderful Lord Edgington Mystery with great characters and realistic situations. There are plenty of twists, turns, and surprises to keep the reader engaged clear to the end.
Blood on the Banisters is the tenth book in Benedict Brown’s Lord Edgington series. I received an ARC copy and this review is my honest opinion. Although this is part of a series, you can read this as a stand alone book and not miss much. Tomorrow is the wedding of Chrissy’s older brother Albert and the love of his life Cassandra. How wonderful! But this is a Lord Edgington story, so someone is going to die. The bride’s family has this custom where the bride spends the night before the wedding with the groom’s family and the groom spends the night with the bride’s. Lord Edgington and Chrissy go with Albert to the bride’s family so you can easily guess that someone in the bride’s family is going to die. With a list of crazy characters a beautiful location, yes Hinwick House is real, how can anything go wrong? Since I don’t give spoilers, you’re going to have to read the book to see who dies and who did the deed. I will tell you that we have one murder and at least seven suspects who all have alibi's! So who has the most to gain with the death? Is it one of Cassandra’s three brothers, her father, the jilted lover, the other girl, or even Albert? Are they all telling the truth or covering for someone else? Covering for who? Are they covering for the same person? And what happens in the flower bed??? How will our fearless duo solve the crime with all of the lies and no evidence? Can you solve the murder before Lord Edgington and Chrissy? You are going to have to read the book to find out! I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. And if this is your first Lord Edgington book, I hope you go on to read the rest of the series!
It's finally time for Christopher's brother to be married to the lovely Cassandra. We've seen them both in previous books in the series so it's an exciting time. At least, for most of them. His brother, Albert, is a bit nervous because there is a tradition on the bride's side that the groom sleeps at her family home the night before the wedding. Cassandra, of course, will be sleeping at his parents' house. Albert is especially nervous because he hasn't yet met her brothers and they will be a feature of their wedding night. Oddly, Cassandra's mother, the Duchess of Hinwick, stays at their house rather than sleeping with the other women. And it soon becomes obvious that she is the ruler of their family. Not only that, all of her family members resent her for keeping them on such short leashes. So, it will not be a surprise to the reader to discover that the woman is murdered. What is surprising is that Albert is the one who is discovered to have blood on his hands even though there are many people at the house who have much higher motives for murder. This even includes Cassandra's ex-fiancé who shows up for some of the festivities. The ending of this book came as a pretty big shock. The author leaves a note that he has been seeding this ending for awhile but I am not so sure that this ending falls under "fair play." I will, however, be interested to see where the series goes next.
Benedict Brown has once again written a murder mystery that I found impossible to put down. When Lord Edgington, Christopher, and Albert are forced by tradition to spend the night before Albert's wedding with his future family they find themselves surrounded by some very unpleasant people. Cassandra's mother dominates the family, forcing her three sons and husband to bend to her iron will. When this woman is murdered it is up to Lord Edgington and Christopher to prove who did, and who did not kill her.
Benedict Brown has created characters who we feel sympathy and dislike for. The twists and turns kept me guessing as they usually do.
I loved reading more about Albert. In previous books he was a background character , but in this novel we get to see him as a more important part of the story.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and cannot wait for the next book in the series.
Love the whole Lord Edgington series written from the adorable and funny perspective of his grandson Chrissy.
I must say I picked the correct murderer right at the beginning bc she was the least likely in every way. Truthfully I didn't stick to my guns and chose the same one Chrissy did, then didn't see the ending until it happened! I enjoyed that it was soppy Albert who exposed the villainess villain before "whoever hold thy peace".
One thing about Benedict Brown's mysteries is that the murder and the solving of it for me it's not the most enjoyable part. Its the witty wisdom, naivete and humor Chrissy offers us in thought, action and conversation. You are in for a thoroughly enjoyable ride as in one of Lord Edgington's gorgeous modes of transportation.
I too looked at the possibility of staying at the great house featured but at over $3,000 a night Plus airfare from Philadelphia it's a little bit beyond my kin.
Albert is getting married! I loved this premise for this installment of Lord Edgington. Christopher is maturing as a detective under his grandfather's tutelage, and I daresay that Albert is maturing as well.
The men of the groom's family are staying at the bride's family home. It is the first time that Albert is meeting the three brothers. Todd and other staff members are on hand to help make the wedding run smoothly, as well as to handle anything else that might arise.
The rather odd evening is capped with a murder. The brothers and father of the bride are jovial, and aside from a servant or two, no one seems upset about the death. Until Albert is accused of the crime. With a race against the clock, it almost seemed like the case would not get solved, at least not correctly.
At first, I was surprised by the ending, but then I wasn't. After a think, it made sense. The author confirmed my thoughts in his end notes. Another fantastic read.
This is the first of the Lord Edgington mysteries that I have read. I really didn’t care for it at all although I did force myself to read to the end. I will say that I decided fairly quickly who the murderer was and for once I was correct. The story itself is not bad. It’s the grandson who supposedly is helping his grandfather that I thought was ridiculous. Especially at the end when the grandfather had pulled all the suspects together to identify the murderer than instead of doing it, he tells his grandson to point out the murderer. The grandson who throughout the entire book seemed confused as to who the murderer could be. I don’t think I will try anymore of of the books in this series.
The tenth installment in the Lord Edgington historical mystery series. Albert is about to get married. On the eve of the wedding he is invited to stay with his fiancée's family. Lord Edgington and Chrissy go with him. The Fairfax family is weird. They all seem to hate Lady Fairfax and make this clear to Lord Edgington and his grandsons after a creepy dinner. When Lady Fairfax is found dead on the staircase the morning of the wedding with her blood all over a sleeping Albert, Lord Edgington and Chrissy must save Albert from being arrested for the murder of his mother-in-law on the day of his wedding. There are certainly no lack of suspects who wanted her dead. Will the wedding go forward as planned? One of the most enjoyable in this great series.
Will you unravel the truth about the blood on the banister?
I always eagerly await each new Lord Edgington investigates adventure. Blood on the Banister DOES NOT DISAPPOINT!! When he, Christopher and Albert arrive for the ‘bachelor night’ at the Fairfax home, surprises abound and they feel uneasy. Will everything be fine for Albert and Cassie when they are wedded on the morrow? Will you and the sleuths be able to solve the problems so that the wedding can be celebrated ?Enjoy a tantalising mystery, and the fascinating historical research into the period outlined in the section after the conclusion.
Mr Brown has created a multi-layered mystery with a solution that took me completely by surprise. Well done, sir! Yes, I am a fan of Lord Edgington and Chrissy, but setting that aside, this truly was a Dame Agatha level of mystery. I had questioned if the culprit could be x and then disregarded it completely. I was proved wrong by a Prentiss!
Not sure how Benedict is able to get so many books out so consistently, but I'm grateful. They are well-worth the wait and super enjoyable. One of my favorite parts is the 'end of the story' where Brown tells of his research and various historical tidbits.
Lord Edgington and his detective-in-training grandson, Christopher, have their work cut out for them on the day of Albert’s wedding when the mother of the bride is found stabbed and laying in a pool of blood at the bottom of the staircase. With a loony family and a few friends all loudly proclaiming their hate of dear old mum and Albert’s fingerprints on the crime scene, things aren’t looking good. Fortunately Christopher has grown into an able assistant, Lord Edgington is in true form, and the local Constable isn’t a total nitwit. Together they solve the crime in the nick of time for the preacher to ask for the “I do’s”. Great fun!
It's Albert's wedding! The guys are all at Cassie's house whilst the girls are all at Lord Edgington's as is tradition in Cassie's family. Her brothers are a bit much for Albert but he gets through the evening and goes to bed, ready for his wedding day.
He's woken by Christopher and his grandfather with the news that Cassie's mother has been murdered in the night and Albert's bedsheets are covered in blood.
Can Christopher and Lord Edgington solve the murder in order for the wedding to take place?
Once again,it's a really well written book and the narration is excellent.
Chrissy and his grandfather, the Marquees of Edgington, are off to his brother, James', wedding. The bride's family tradition is that the night before the wedding, the bride and groom trade homes, each spending the night with the other's family. James' bride assured him the "My brothers will take care of you." That remains to be seen, considering James' lack of confidence and tendency to cry! There definitely will be no boredom at this much planned for and anticipated event. Get your fanciest outfits pressed. You won't want to miss a minute!
Another great addition to this series! This time there's a murder in Albert's fiancée's house as the men gather the day before the wedding. Hardly anyone but family and staff are in the house, but everybody has a motive and also an alibi. Chrissy and Lord Edgington have their work cut out for them if they want to save the wedding! The ending was a complete surprise too. I received a review copy and freely leave this honest review.
Oh, what a joy to have a new Lord Edgington investigates novel in my hands !
I’ve loved every novel and novella in this series so far, the mysteries are intriguing and mysterious. The main characters Lord ‘Grandpa’ Edgington and grandson Christopher are fantastic and keep surprising me as they learn and grow. And i’m exceptionally fond of Chrissy’s good old soppy brother Albert :) This novel involves a big happening for him, great fun !
This was another enjoyable outing with the dynamic duo! Christopher is learning in leaps & bounds & has matured so much since the start of this series. His brother Albert though still has a looong way to go! Having his future mother-in-law murdered on the day of his wedding put the pressure on Lord Edgington & Christopher to find the guilty party in her family. This was not helped by discovering her family loathed her! Baffling read!
The quirky staff isn't as prominent as in some books, but Lord Eddington is always entertaining and Chrissy is growing into his assistant role more and more. This time sis brother, Albert, is in a pivotal role as the groom. The interview parts began to drag a little for me, but the pace quickly pick up each time. I have such fun reading this series - and love Lord E's cars!! On to the next book!
This one was so fun. I don't think I've ever read a book before where not just did everyone have a motive, but everyone openly, verbally said they would have committed the deed. I did get the final solution right, but I really enjoyed the twist at the end. 10/10 would recommend. I really enjoy Benedict Brown's writing, and Chrissy and the Lord are so fun to hang out with.
What a super mystery! As usual, master detective Lord Edgington and his grandson Christopher are tasked with solving the perplexing murder of one very unlikeable victim. With a wedding at stake, Christopher and his grandfather race to solve the crime. The clues are many, but I still had a hard time deciding who was responsible. The path to resolution was twisty with more than one shocking turn. And I do mean shocking! This book is one of the best in the series. Highly recommended!
Benedict Brown has delivered another wonderful mystery wrapped around a strange family situation that is extremely well detailed and sadly, extremely possible.
This series has developed nicely with excellent character development and without the usual plot elements copied from other authors.
It was good to keep up with the characters in this series, and there certainly are some colorful new characters to get acquainted with as events lead up to a planned wedding. There have been hints leading up these events that all may not be well with some of the characters and things play out dramatically in the usual manner at this very strange manor. I shan't spoil it for others.
