A Little History of Dublin

Rate this book
Irish village. Viking town. English city. Proud European capital.

A Little History of Dublin is a high-speed journey through a thousand years of life in the Irish capital. The key events are explained in short chapters, and the reader will discover the complete history of Dublin in the time it takes to walk from Dollymount to Dalkey.

Comedy and calamity feature throughout this ‘history in a hurry’. Trevor White writes with affection for his birthplace, but also with a clarity that reflects his experience of creating an award-winning museum about the history, humour and hospitality of Dublin.

The result is a crisp, colourful account of mischief and triumph in one of the great small cities of the world.

“The leading historian of Dublin, David Dickson, calls the Vikings ‘a succession of marauding visitors camping beside the Liffey.’ They sound like a stag party in Temple Bar.”

[..]

“[T]he prospect of a Catholic royal dynasty would prove too great a provocation. A group of prominent English protestants invited James’s Dutch Protestant son-in-law, William of Orange [..] to intervene. He duly invaded England in 1688, whereupon James fled, and William and Mary were crowned the following year. [..] When King William rode into Dublin on Sunday, 6 July 1690, a contemporary source wrote, ‘there was very great joy when we crept out of the houses and found ourselves as it were in a new world’ [..] ‘the streets were filled with crowds and shouting and the poor Roman Catholics now lying in the same terrors as we had done some days before’.”
