Oh my giddy aunt! This is a book that will keep you up all night. I'm being serious, once you break this book in, you will not, I repeat not be able to rest until you read right to the vital end.
Its a she said, but did she. Its a he said, but did he.
Its a maybe..... its someone else.
Alexandra Inglis is a respected doctor within her practice and for all that know her. There are ethic and boundaries that have to be in place and each doctor to abide by.
But then there is Johnathan and 18 year old diabetic lad.
I was astounded at this story, not for its content so much as for the great style it was written that kept me on my toes spinning around and around and not knowing just where I was to focus, the author sure had me dizzy.
I could write a heap of things and I want to give it all away...... but I won't, I need you to read this, its truly a great read, a breathless read.
I was pushed, I was prodded I was sure it was........ I think I suspected everyone who was ever mentioned in this book.
By the time I got to the end I had narrowed it down. Was I right? Hmm not 100%
Lucy Dawson did it again! She took me on another crazy emotional rollercoaster ride that I wanted to stay on until the very end.... this book kept me up until 2:00 in the morning and left my head spinning.... and truth be told I still don’t know what really happened, but I think that is the beauty of it.... there are three sides to the story... his side... her side... and the truth....
This is a definite he said she said story.... and the way it was told was simply brilliant.... first we get Alex‘s point of view... Alex really isn’t the most likable of characters.... she was on a girls trip to Ibiza... had a lot too much to drink and woke up in bed with a guy and really no memory of the night.... now the kicker is he is a patient of hers and he is 17...... so even if hubby is OK with this there is going to be fall out.... yes Alex is married and a doctor and the mother of two young daughters.... so in the beginning of this book I’m thinking wow what bad luck, not that I condone cheating, but.....
Then we get Jonathan‘s point of view the 17-year-old.... now I have a 15-year-old and a 21-year-old son so this probably influences how I look at this....ick.... so is Jonathan a crazy stalker or the victim? Things start coming out and I was lead in one direction and then in a different direction and it was quite the journey.... along with Alex and Jonathan‘s point of view we got the points of view of several other characters just to add to the craziness.... i’m not sure if anybody was a very reliable narrator....
Along with all the twists and turns this book touched on a few very relevant issues... of course there is the obvious one... Sexual harassment and people in power abusing it.... but I really thought more interestingly the book really touched on social media and the power of the like.... I have to admit it was a bit disconcerting to see someone achieve fame for being a victim, maybe? For me it made Jonathan story less believable... it’s just quite amazing how much social media has altered and dictates our lives....
Absolutely without a doubt recommend to all fans of psychological thrillers with brilliant twists....
*** thank you so much too Bookouture and Net Galley for a copy of this brilliant book ***
A really engaging thriller that sees Alex, a doctor, have a one night stand on a drunken weekend in Ibiza, only to find out that unbeknownst to her it was with one of her patients. However, he is telling a much different story! Things spiral out from beyond her control and she finds that one night could cost her her husband, her family and her career. I found this book to be quite gripping, racing through it to see what the truth was and who was telling the lies. Recommended for all lovers of psychological thrillers.
White Lies by Lucy Dawson is one of those rare gems that really does live up to it’s tag line of being a gripping psychological thriller with an absolutely brilliant twist. I’m filing this one in my what the heck did I just read folder.
The story starts a reader off by introducing Alexandra Inglis who is apparently waking up to a one night stand after a drunken night out with her girlfriends in Ibiza. This probably wouldn’t be a problem if Alex was single and wild and free but she’s actually a married doctor and mother of two. The problem though was her husband went down the cheating route first and in her drunken state this was her payback.
However, as we all know the story isn’t going to end with Alex slinking home and confessing her revenge lay. No, before Alex knows it she finds out that her mysterious man is actually a seventeen year old patient and so begins the story of her life slowly falling apart.
Having read another title by Lucy Dawson I already knew she was a great author that could spin an amazing tale to keep a readers attention but I wasn’t prepared for what I found in White Lies. The style in which the story is written is even a unique way to peel back the layers of the plot.
We start with Alex’s point of view but slowly it changes as the story goes on giving depth to the plot and keeping a reader guessing. This one is the type of story that once you think you know what is happening the author does an about face and totally changes everything to really make one’s head spin. And yes, in the end I would say it was an absolutely brilliant twist. Definitely recommend this one to the psychological thriller fans out there.

Never knew that lies come in all colors. In that case, we may all be adorned in a painter's smock smattered with every hue.
Dr. Alexandra Inglis is on holiday in Ibiza with her girl friends. Way too much rum in those fancy umbrella drinks. With numbed lips and a numbed mind, Alex meets up with a tall handsome stranger in the wee hours. Eventually, the sun's rays shed a piercing light upon the stranger who now shares her bed in this upscale hotel room. Alex glances over as the young man grabs his clothes off the floor and hits the hallway.....pronto.
Regrets are served cold for breakfast as Alex makes her way down to the hotel restaurant. Her friends smirk as they all realize that perhaps Alex wasn't alone the night before. A quick run to the airport and Alex is home, once again, carrying a heavy flight bag and a heavy heart. Like Lucy often said to Desi: "You've got a lot of 'splainin' to do."
Alex comes full circle and tells her husband, Rob, just what happened. Although furious with her, he knows that this was a snap reaction to his own cheating with an office associate not too long ago. Their marriage needs a complete renovation from top to bottom. But what is going to boomerang back at them in the coming weeks will leave them reeling in its aftermath. White Lies are going to be turning neon purple.
You see, Alex's little triste is not going away any time soon thanks to YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook. Well, what you put out into the social media universe will eventually come back to haunt you with a life of its own. The circumstances will change by the minute and those white lies will take on a snowball from hell effect growing by the milisecond.
This was my first encounter with the talented Lucy Dawson. She played this one for all she's got. As readers, we're not going to feel any warm fuzzies for any of the main characters. Period. I felt like Hercule Poirot in an ol' Agatha Christie novel wanting to accuse everyone. J'accuse from the roof tops. Everyone seems to have a motive after the body is found. And Lucy Dawson has a gloved hand tightly around your own neck. The woman is relentless. A good one, folks. Not to be missed.
Alexandra (Alex) Inglis is a respected family Doctor, trusted by her patients to keep their most intimate secrets. When Alex oversteps a line with, Jonathan, one of her patients, she knows she's gone to far.
At first I felt sorry for Alex, who while on holiday, made a huge mistake in sleeping with someone. Then I did not know who to believe. Her husband is at home looking after their two young daughters. Then she finds out that the person, Jonathan, is a patient of hers and he is only seventeen! All the main characters tell their version of the story in blocks. Jonathan's version of his story is completely different to Alex's. I really liked this story until the conclusion. Then it all just seems to fall apart. It would have been a definite 4* or maybe more if the ending had bee different.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Bookouture and the author Lucy Dawson for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
EXCERPT: I glanced at the crumpled, empty bed and shuddered at what I'd done there with him in the night - things that I let happen. That I made happen. I put my hands up to my thudding head, threaded my fingers into my hair and closed my eyes.
Things that I now will never be able to undo.
ABOUT THIS BOOK: When you have everything, you have everything to lose…
Alexandra Inglis is a respected family doctor, trusted by her patients to keep their most intimate secrets. And if sometimes the boundaries between duty and desire blur… well, she's only human.
But when Alex oversteps a line with Jonathan, one of her patients, she knows she's gone too far. Jonathan is obsessive, and to get what he wants he will tear Alex's world apart - threatening not only her career but her marriage and family too.
Soon Alex finds she's capable of doing almost anything to keep hold of her perfect life, as it begins to spin dangerously out of her control…
MY THOUGHTS: What a wild ride! Who to believe? Who is the liar? Alex? Jonathan? Or are they both lying? What is it they say? There's his story, there's her story, and then there's the truth...
White Lies is told from multiple points of view, mainly from Alex and Jonathan's perspective, but we also hear from Alex's husband, her boss, Jonathan's girlfriend, his parents. . . and that would be the reason I deducted 1/2 star from this otherwise brilliant read, there were just too many points of view. Not all of them contributed anything to the story.
I just didn't want to put this down. I didn't want to go to work. I just wanted to be left in peace to read this brilliantly addictive book. I loved Dawson's The Daughter, and White Lies is every bit as good. I had knots in my stomach and a stranglehold on my Kindle as I read. Dawson knows just how to hook a reader and wind him in. 4.5 very bright stars.
Thank you to Bookouture via Netgalley for providing a digital copy of White Lies for review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own personal opinions.

White Lies is yet another winner by Lucy Dawson. I was intrigued from the very first chapter, when something happens that creates a domino effect of sorts in the life of the protagonist, leading to a creepy conclusion.
I am definitely a character-driven reader and sometimes they feel a little formulaic in psychological thriller (or maybe I have been overdoing it with the genre...) but I am happy to report that Alexandra, the protagonist of White Lies, does not fall into this category. She is a rounded, well-developed person. I like how Dawson takes "normal" people with fairly ordinary lives and adds one element to unsettle them, which has a ripple effect and creates a gripping story. She has done so again here, and I couldn't wait to see how the story could be resolved. I am usually not the fastest reader of books on Kindle, but I had a hard time putting this down, even as my eyes were stinging. The ending felt a tiny bit rushed and I kind of guessed it, but I didn't really mind. White Lies is a great read, especially if you are looking for a page turner to read as you enjoy the warmer weather. Recommended!
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
At the beginning, my initial thoughts were that I knew exactly where this was going and it wasn’t going to excite me. BUT… several chapters in, things changed course and I got a big surprise. I don’t want to say to much because going in blind works best.
But, I will say that I love that we hear from different folks which keeps shaking things up and keeping the reader/listener on her toes. Who are we to believe? Both sides just sound so true… Up until the end, I really was up in the air. The pace slows a bit towards the end but the actual end does a great job of tying the ends up.
The narrator does a wonderful job portraying the different characters.
The book started with a bang (literally), a doctor (ahem ahem) Alex goes for girls' weekend to Ibiza to relax and enjoy. What happens in Ibiza should have remained in Ibiza! But unfortunately a night of fun, dance, drinks, and sex (a one-night stand) with a young man Jonathan soon gets exposed. Alex, back home, not only confesses to her husband, finds herself in the midst of a storm in the teapot. That young man who had done the dirty with her, is a 17 year school kid and her patient!!! Horrors!!! End of her career as a doctor in a trusted position!!! Then the he says, she says begin....
Who is telling the truth? And who is the ultimate liar?
The entire book is written in the form of a testimony narration, initially by the young man Jonathan and is soon followed by the rest of the characters, Alex, her husband Rob and Jonathan's girl friend Cherry. The author, Lucy Dawson has found a very novel, interesting way to present this thriller. Each chapter made me feel like a pendulum swaying tick-tock by the second, as per the character's narration.
I love the author's way of writing. She made every character appear to be earnestly truthful and honest to the core. Jonathan and Alex had their own truths, and I had no way of verifying them. I kept searching for clues in each page. Every chapter made me believe in the veracity of their statement.
I literally breathed through the pages just to know one fact
Who the heck is telling me the truth???
And the truth is finally revealed. I felt a bit let down, as the ending could have been written better. I expected and I really wanted the grand rush of a finale, where the sound of the plot reaches a crescendo and reverberates in my ears, for days to come. But it was a good treble of an ending, a bit of a cop out, but nonetheless, an entertaining read!!
I received an ARC from NetGalley and publisher Bookouture, and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.
Oh this was gooood. Dr Alex Inglis is away at a girl's weekend in Ibiza when she gets terribly drunk and ends up taking a young man back to her hotel room. In the morning she is horrified at what she has done. She is, after all, a 40 year old married woman, mother and doctor. When she gets back home she is more horrified to learn that the young man is actually a patient of hers and only 17 years old. She immediately tells her husband, after all, he himself had only recently had a fling with a young c0-worker so they were even - right? Not so fast...
The narrative then flips to Jonathan's (the young man's) voice and he tells a completely different story. A story that could wipe out Alex's career. Who to believe? Its a case of 'he said, she said'. Things soon get more complicated as tragedy strikes and everyone is ducking for cover.
The story is told from various points of view and each one is presented as 'the truth'. Unfortunately these truths are conflicting and it is up to you, dear reader, to try and make sense of it. A nice twist at the end lifts this book from being a good psychological thriller to being right up there.
White Lies is written in a way that means it quickly became a very addictive read. Beginning in the form of statements (though written in a typical story style), we hear from Dr Alex Inglis who cheats on her husband in Ibiza only to return to the UK to find out the person she had sex with is her 17 year old patient, Jonathan Day. And so begins a he said, she said tale as we start to hear from Jonathan and others involved in the story such as Alex’s husband, Jonathan’s parents and his girlfriend. It’s a consuming read that I truly struggled to put down as I read these alternating view points.
White Lies is unsettling in places because I honestly had no idea who to trust. Each character that we meet could be lying, but they could be telling the truth. But which is it? Not knowing who I could trust meant that I tried to maintain some sort of detachment from the characters, not wanting to empathise with them or see them as anything other than a potential liar. That meant it became a little bit of a different read than I was used to and as I read about these characters being victimised part of me wondered whether they deserved it or whether they were telling the truth. Also worth noting is the fact that the storyline centres around the alleged grooming of a teenager by an older woman, which in the wake of the #MeToo movement is not something we see a lot of (with this even being alluded to here in the story). That viewpoint by some, of how this situation, a lad with an older woman is somehow more acceptable than when it’s the other way round is so wrong. There’s a lot to discuss in this story and it’s a really good look at the doctor patient relationship and the obsessions that can be spawned from that.
As the story progresses we know it’s heading towards what I hoped was going to be a dramatic and worthy finale to the story. If I’m honest I felt that it was lacking. Given that this is a psychological thriller I was expecting the author to go for the shock value (or the cop out ending that would cause the most anger and surprise to the reader), and Lucy Dawson did go for an ending that to me just left me thinking ‘Eh?’. It wasn’t a satisfying ending to everything that I had read up until that point, and we don’t get full closure regarding all of the characters which left me wanting more after I finished this story. The entire story had me gripped and wanting to know what had really happened, but then the ending arrived and was just a huge disappointment. I do recommend this book to psychological thriller fans because the endings to these sorts of books are always subjective and so what I didn’t enjoy, you might and so White Lies is a book I do recommend.
It's me, not you. I'm afraid I may not have given you a fair shot, but I didn't think I could wade through 300 or so pages before getting to the end to figure out which person (or persons) is crazy, lying and/or the bad guy. I was just not up for another He Said/ She Said. I feel like I've been down this path too many times and it just seems redundant to me right now.
I am sorry I was only able to give you a 2.5 Star rating but that may just be more an indication of my lack of patience this week than of your merit. It's hard for me to be an impartial judge of that right now. I know this is fast, but I've already moved on to a new book now and honestly, I'm pretty into it in a way I was never into you.
I wish you the best of luck with ratings from future readers . I may try you again when my mood is different.
Good grief. How to even begin to explain how White Lies made me feel? You know that game where you’re blindfolded and people spin you around and around and you’re left slightly nauseous, dizzy and completely disorientated? Yes, a bit like that.
Alex is a respected doctor, wife and mother. But when she crosses the line with one of her patients, she stands to lose everything. The story is mostly told by Alex and Jonathan but it quickly becomes obvious they both have rather different versions of the truth. Neither Alex or Jonathan came across as particularly likeable, nor could I figure out if they were reliable narrators. I found myself questioning every word they said and even now, I still find myself wondering if I have the right end of the stick.
In the aftermath of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, this story is incredibly apt. An innocent gesture may very well be blown up out of all proportions and a drunken mistake can easily ruin lives. Lucy Dawson paints a a thought-provoking and vivid picture of how hard it is to defend yourself against certain allegations, especially in a case like the one involving Alex and Jonathan.
White Lies is an utterly gripping and incredibly addictive psychological thriller that kept me up half the night and left me guessing until the very last page. It’s relatable in that way that I’m sure many of us have had a cheeky glass too many and maybe ended up doing something we might not normally do. By the time you think of the consequences, it’s usually already too late.
The ultimate conclusion left me spinning and also slightly confused for a while. During the night, when yet another bout of insomnia had me staring at the ceiling, I had a Eureka moment and all the pieces fell into place. I love this, in case you didn’t know. A storyline that keeps me guessing, that has me asking lots of questions, that has my brain going around in circles with a crazy amount of thinky-thoughts and is still on my mind days after finishing the book.
I thought Lucy Dawson’s previous book The Daughter was utterly brilliant but this one is even more so. A corker of a book and one you should undoubtedly add to your TBR right now! I can’t wait to see what the author comes up with next.
A psychological thriller that had my head spinning, unsure of what I was reading, or who’s story to believe. A he said/she said domestic drama full of secrets and lies. At the end you’ll be scratching your head and NOT believe what’s there in front of you. All I can say is WOW. I see a sequel possibly due to its ending.. hoping that is. Lucy Dawson is a new to me author, after reading this book I’m definitely interested in reading more!
What a breath of fresh air after my dreary book funk!
With a great writing style, I already knew from reading the first three pages that this was going to be an addictive read. And boy, were my instincts right about this one!
The book starts off with a bang with Dr Alex Inglis waking up with one hell of a hangover, with a very good looking young man sleeping beside her after an eventful night in the bedroom. This is not exactly what she had planned for her girls' Ibiza weekend away...after all, she's a married mother of two. What was she thinking?!
What a surprise then, when Alex returns home to the UK, that she discovers her young lover turns out to be a 17 year old patient! Intriguing, isn't it?
And so begins a He Said, She Said scenario as we hear from the 17 year old Jonathan, his parents, his girlfriend and Alex 's husband. The varying yet totally believable viewpoints grips you with doubt as the reader is led to question who is telling the truth and who is twisting it with lies.
This all consuming story had me desperate to discover where it would lead, excitedly looking forward to an ending that would justify the anticipation the author had built up within me. The subsequent, brain twisting conclusion did not disappoint, having played with my mind and left me thinking of this unputdownable story long after I finished reading it.
This is my first read by Lucy Dawson, and I eagerly look forward to reading more of her gripping work.
Many thanks to the author, Netgalley and Bookouture for my copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
"White Lies" is a "He Said/She Said" psychological thriller about infidelity, lies, and obsessions.
Alex, an attractive 40-year-old prominent physician and mother of two daughters, cheats on her husband after drinking too much on a girls' weekend in Ibiza.
Alex later discovers that her alleged one-night-stand lover Jonathan is one of her 17-year-old patients.
1) Alex claims that this was the first time she slept with Jonathan and that she was too drunk to realize that he was 17 years old AND one of her patients. 2) Jonathan claims that his relationship with Alex has been ongoing and he has the texts to prove it.
Who is telling the truth?
The story unfolded from four POVs and readers never know which unreliable narrator is the most reliable narrator.
I did not guess the ending and gasped when I read the last word.
I listened to the audiobook and the narration was excellent, although the book would have benefited from four different narrators since it was told from four POVs.
This book was released in 2018 and somehow escaped my radar.
This is the second Lucy Dawson book that I have listened to this week and to say that I am hooked is an understatement.
Omg,I feel soooo disappointed, not because I didn't enjoy any part of this twist packed, intense adrenaline ride.Nope,I absolutely loved every chapter, page, paragraph, sentence and word. The simple truth is,I didn't want this story of secrets, lies and manipulation to end.
Dr Alexandria Inglis has gone on a girl's weekend away to Ibiza to try and forget,at least for a couple of days her problems at home. Her Husband Rob recently admitted that he had a one night stand with his work colleague who just happens to be much younger and prettier than Alex. The plan was to try and have some fun, have a few drinks and a good laugh. It definitely wasn't a part of the plan for Alex to get paralytic and have a one night stand with Jonathan.A young man who turns out to be only seventeen and just happens to be a patient of Alex`s at the surgery where she works back home.
This is essentially a he said/she said story that consists of three parts and a epilogue. The chapters in the first part mainly alternate between Alex and Jonathan but also include a couple of chapters that are told from the point of view of Alex`s partner at the doctors surgery,Dr David Harper. The second part is voiced by Alex`s husband Rob and Jonathan`s girlfriend Cherry.Reading their thoughts and feelings about the people involved and the events as they unfolded around them added realism and depth to their characters. They weren't just secondary characters who hung about in the background and added nothing to the story.Throughout the whole book I was constantly changing my mind about who's version was the truth.Even now because the author has left that open to the readers discretion,I still have absolutely no idea who was telling the truth.I can't say I found any of the main characters very likeable,I would have felt more sympathy for Rob if he hadn't cheated on Alex.As in real life Alex soon discovers the sad fact is that in modern society a person's life and reputation can be so easily destroyed by people on the internet,tv and the press. If it means you get more likes and comments, the ratings for your show shoot up or you sell loads more papers then who cares about the truth or the consequences and how it affects someone else's life.
I was hooked in by this absolutely brilliant, gripping thriller from the first page right through to.the totally unexpected conclusion.Highly recommended, worth far more than five stars and most definitely going to be on my list of my favourite books of this year
Many thanks to Bookouture for a arc of this book via Netgalley in exchange for a honest review
Without a doubt this is one unputdownable read. I made the mistake of picking it up one evening when I went to bed for an early night. I ended up reading over half of it in one sitting and finished it off the day after in the second sitting. Obviously no early night for me!
The story is split into parts, we start off seeing everything from Alex’s point of view and then it’s the turn of Jonathan. This is one of those stories that you end up not knowing quite what to believe. When you hear each side they are fully believable, but someone isn’t quite telling the truth, but who and why?
The second half we then get the points of view of Rob, Alex’s husband and Cherry who is Jonathan’s girlfriend. It was great to see the reactions from people close to the main characters and who are after all also affected by what’s going on.
At times it felt a bit like a game of table tennis. Back and forth to see how each character was going to react and what they are going to do next. It really does make for some gripping reading. I didn’t have a clue how it was all going to end but I was desperate for the truth.
Though not the most likeable of characters, in some ways you can empathise with them. Each one of them held my interest and left you wanting to get back to them to find out more.
White Lies is a page turner of a read that held my interest throughout. I definitely advise picking it up when you know you have no interruptions, as believe me, you won’t be putting it down for a while once you start! A gripping and tense read that will have you racing to the end to discover the truth and how it is going to conclude.
My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.
Dr Alexandra Inglis , a married woman and mother of two , decides to have a one night stand in a drunken stupor. In the morning though she realizes that the guy she slept with is her 17 year old patient . Thus begins a story of he said ,she said along with a few more people’s POV’s to dig among the lies till we finally reach the truth.
White Lies is a fast paced psychological thriller that keeps you guessing till the end.Lucy Dawson leads us on a wild ride that leaves us wanting for more. A must read for all psychological mystery lovers and will not disappoint
I would like to thank Bookouture & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.
This is my first book I have read by Lucy Dawson and it won't be my last! WOW. I never saw that ending! I love when you think you have it all figured out....and you don't! I would hate to spoil this book for anyone so I will leave out any spoilers. I really liked how the book is written from the different characters viewpoint. Often I have found this confusing with other books, but not in White Lies. The author does a great job of establishing who the characters are before doing this. You feel like you are allowed into their thought process when reading their chapter. Loved it! #WhiteLies #NetGalley
Lucy Dawson is definitely a go to author for me. Everything that I have read by her has been fantastic and this one definitely did not disappoint. I read this whilst away on holidays and it was very hard to put down.
Alex Inglis is a family doctor, somebody that has the trust and respect of her patients and community. Will one mistake destroy her career and her family? Whilst away on a girls weekend Alex has a one night stand with a younger man. On her return home she discovers that he is a 17 year old patient of hers, Jonathon Day.
She confesses to her husband and hopes that that will be the end of it, but it is only the beginning. Jonathon becomes obsessed and will not leave Alex and her family alone. Her life starts to unravel - how can she take back control.
This is a fantastic book, one that will have you wanting more. Thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for my advanced copy of this book to read and enjoy in exchange for my honest opinions
Holy cow!!! What did i Just read??? And that ending!!!!! Wow! Just wow!! White Lies is a psychological thriller and was full of suspense until the end. Dr Alexandra Inglis makes a very big mistake right in the beginning of the book and her life comes crashing down right after. So many lies throughout - not little white lies - but big fat lies! He said, she said ... who can you believe? I was given this book through the publisher and NetGalley for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own. I will be thinking about this book for days to come!!!
5 Stars! I liked how each character had a chapter (or testimony) from their POV so it was easy to follow each persons story of how things went down. Not one narrator was reliable and that added to the darkness of this thriller. I wasn’t sure who was telling the truth and who was lying. I kept turning the pages because I wanted to know the truth...and if there even was a truth! Dark, twisted, twisty, dangerous!
Thank you #NetGalley, the publisher and the author for my free ARC in exchange for my honest review.
3.25 ⭐️ White Lies is a tough one to review. There were parts I liked and parts where I wanted to throw the book across the room and start a new one. I often felt frustrated and I thought it would end without the nice little bow. But bow I got and I felt very satisfied with the ending.
I connected more with Alex's husband, Rob, than I did with Alex. She confused me but I was still intrigued with her and felt the need to figure her out. I absolutely could not stand Jonathan but I didn't mind it a bit. His character felt very real to what he was portraying.
The wow moment didn’t really wow me as I did predict the end although quite late in the book. It was enjoyable enough to finish and did keep me guessing but not enough to give me that shock and awe I was waiting for. It was a bit of a slow burn, which isn't a bad thing, and I would still definitely recommend this book for those who enjoy domestic noir.
I'm not even sure where to start with this one as it literally blew my mind! I love that it references the Weinstein scandal and turns the tables on the subject of sexual harassment by questioning whether it is the adult woman doctor or the young 17-year-old male student telling lies and obsessing over the other. Is it truly a drunken one-night-stand at a "girls' weekend getaway" gone wrong, or is the good doctor looking to further her fantasies about a handsome young man? And is he obsessed with this attractive older woman or simply looking to further his social media platform and gain fame? Are these all little white lies or bigger, blacker lies intended to keep secrets buried deeper? Told from alternating perspectives of the doctor, the young man, his girlfriend, the husband, and the doctor's associate, this novel literally left me breathless wondering where the truth really lies as it is not until the very end that it is revealed. This book tore out my heartstrings and stomped on them! It's one I will be thinking about for a long time. A must-read! Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC!
Oh boy. This book was going great guns until the end and that end, OMG. To say it was ridiculous and made no sense whatsoever is an understatement. It came so far out of left field that the field went all the way to the horizon. It made less sense than MPs debating on Brexit (sorry, that just slipped out 🤣). I would say words fail me but clearly they don’t. 😂. I know a considerable number of reviewers clearly liked it and I’m probably in the minority but I felt I’d wasted several hours of my life that I’ll never get back!
Until that ludicrous end it was a really good read. The story concerns Dr Alexandra Inglis and a young man Jonathan Day. They met apparently in an Ibizan night club, she was extremely drunk and they ended up in her hotel room and had sex. The story is mostly told from their different and contradictory perspectives, there are a lot of twists and turns and you have absolutely no idea whose version of the truth is correct. Who is the liar? I kept changing my mind as more evidence was revealed and that was really interesting. Was Alex the victim and being manipulated by a devious young man or was his version of Alex’s actions stalking him the accurate story? Who was the victim? I liked the premise of the novel and the two main characters were well portrayed. I liked the narration of the story from Alex, Jonathan and Rob but I felt David’s and Cherry’s chapters were not particularly strong.
Overall then, 90% was good and for me the final 10% was awful! So awful my jaw dropped open which I’m sure wasn’t a pretty sight. 😉
I loved this author’s last book The Daughter so I was really excited when I saw that her latest release, White Lies was out and I could not wait to get my hands on a copy!
The book jumps straight in to the plot line and I was hooked right from the start – I do love a good psychological thriller and this was definitely one of those!
I found the book to be a really addictive read, I didn’t want to put it down and read it in a few hours as I needed to know what happened. I was completely gripped by the plot as soon as I started reading and it just goes to show the impact that a few little white lies can really have – I loved the story and the characters were great. Everything was planned out well and it all worked together brilliantly.
Definitely five stars from me – another excellent book from Lucy Dawson and one I highly recommend!
The story opens with Alex, a well established GP who is married with two small children, on a girls weekend in Ibiza and she wakes up with a man in her bed. She goes back home absolutely mortified and confesses all to her husband who has recently cheated on his wife with a female work colleague. They decide to try to forget their infidelities and move on, except that isn't going to happen when Alex discovers the man she woke up next to is a patient at her surgery and her world falls apart. This quickly descends into a he did, she did scenario, but which of them is telling the truth?
This is the first book I've read by this author and I was hooked from the first page, I loved how each of the characters told their version of events in separate chapters and with each new chapter my mind was changed again and again as to who was the guilty party. The author depicts brilliantly what a moment of madness can do to a person's life and how things can never be the same again. The twist when it came was most unexpected, I would never have predicted that outcome. I loved this book and will certainly be reading more of her work.
Thank you to Bookouture for the auto approval, I will post my review on Goodreads and Amazon.
Interesting story that seems like it could be based on a true story. Crazy how things can turn, and be turned around. The twists kept things interesting, I didn't expect the ending. Good read!
