Air Force wife and professional organizer Ellie Avery goes to Washington, D.C., expecting some r&r while her pilot husband attends classes-but it's Ellie who gets a deadly lesson when this getaway turns out to be murder. With swollen feet and swelling belly, pregnant Ellie bravely joins the nation's tourists in seeing the sights in Washington D.C. Husband Mitch has to attend military training, but as Ellie visits monuments and museums, she has other Air Force wives for company, including her best friend Abby. She also plans to catch-up with Mitch's scatter-brained sister Summer, who is finishing college while working as a nanny for a Washington media star, and do a personal favor for her favorite cousin. Factor in some serious shopping, and this sounds like a fun trip. But before she can take care of her cousin's request, the man she is supposed to meet breaks their date . . . because someone tried to kill him on his way to see her. Is it a random mugging? Ellie almost buys that explanation. Then a fatal incident at the Metro station, Summer's furtive behavior, and too many people telling lies, as well as keeping secrets, convince Ellie that something is rotten in the nation's capital. Should she do the safe thing and pack her bags? Not likely when Ellie Avery is just the right woman to clean up the most mysterious cases of murder.

Ellie Avery, her husband Mitch and their friends are in Washington D.C.. While the men are in a military training class, the women go sightseeing. But the women see more than they bargained for as they witness an accident at the Metro station.
This book is part of the cosy murders series. Ellie is a bit of an amateur sleuth. The characters are well rounded and believable. I haven't read the previous books in this series but this book can be read as a standalone.
Granted I am barely into the first chapter but I am already questioning the intelligence of the writer just putting things into the story just to make a story. What I mean is,why would one hire a "boutique" tour guide, Wesseley, who merely gets the tourists to the Metro system to the Capitol building and then the Capitol tour guide provides the tour then the group meets up with Wesseley after the Capitol tour to get back to the Metro system? Why does this make any sense? And why would Wesseley say to the group that they have the afternoon free and further suggest going to the Natural History Museum with a great exhibit but then go on to add that they would be going there tomorrow anyway? I am sure Wesseley is a central character in this novel but the way she is being portrayed is 2 dimensional at best.
This is not a good start to this novel. How does this nonsense get past an editor/publisher? I found in the first 2 novels too many "words" and not enough substance. Another gripe is the half-baked conversations that get no where and provide nothing to the story. The way Ellie just blurts out questions to other characters should get her face slapped sometimes as she is rude and insensitive. Also the author throws out too many different characters that just get jumbled up during the course of the story. It may be clear in the authors' mind who is who but to the reader it is confusing. Putting out a rotating cast of characters just so the "who done it" can't be figured out on page one is actually confusing. This is happening again. I regret purchasing the entire set of these novels but am determined to get through them.
I retain what I read and when discrepencies hit me in the face, discrepencies that create different paths for Ellie to take, I get drawn out of the story. the author is sloppy to say the least. Ellie is not a likeable character or heroine. She is pregnantand rarely shows concern for herself or her baby. She takes ridiculous risks.
It is obvious now that I have finished reading this book that the author changed directions mid-field. She choose to misdirect the reader without enough substance. Bad writing.
Had a hard time getting into this one. I really don't like when the characters in the book take vacations. For some reason leaving the comfort of their towns and homes makes me not like the book as much. I basically skimmed the last few chapters and really didn't care who did it. Luckily, it was a library book, so I was only out some time. If I continue the series, the last two are also in my local library, so I can get them there.
Overall just kind of ...meh... I didn't really get in to many of the characters or the plot much. But hey, it was a free kindle book so I aint complainin'.
I'm not sure why this didn't appeal to me. I can't say it was just one thing. The writing was decent, but the characters didn't keep me interested at all.
I really like the way Sara Rosett writes. This mystery set in Washington DC held my interest, and the side storylines rounded it out really well! As always, the daily life details she includes of a young mom/military wife appeal to me too. This was a fun read!
I always enjoy reading about Ellie Avery and her BFF Abby. This book finds them in DC on vacation while the husbands attend training for their AF careers I enjoy the books as I can relate to the juggling of motherhood and other demands. I also can relate to the military lifestyle as I grew up a Navy dependent. This cozy was enjoyable to read as it described many DC sights. The mystery itself was quite involved and had some overlapping storylines that were quite intriguing
I think I might have gotten about 10% into this one. Can't stand the main character, can't stand her pregnancy issues. Don't care about her military husband or his assignment. The sights they're visiting in DC are the most interesting part, but I've been there enough to not need to read about them. I may come back to this someday...but I doubt it.
Okay - I finished the book. There were random mentions of her pregnancy, in case we forgot, but she did not have the baby during this book. It was okay.
I love mysteries, and this book was free on my kindle, so it was an easy selection. Overall, it was a fast read-before-you-go-to-sleep kind of book, but the little organizational tips at the end of every chapter seemed completely random. I have seen this type of thing done in books before, but typically there is some relevance to themes or connection to issues raised in the chapter, but here they were simply unrelated and a bit distracting.
I enjoyed this Ellie Avery book. I think Sara Rosett is letting Avery get a little smarter with each book. In the first two books she did things that were incredibly dumb from the view of anyone who has read or watched murder mysteries. This time she actually makes connections and tries not to put herself in danger while still trying to solve the case. It's a nice change to see her involvement because of a desire to clear her family of suspicion rather than nosiness.
Ellie and her husband, Mitch, spend some time in Washington D.C. for a training seminar. While they are there Ellie and the other military wives your the capitol and happen to be on the Metro platform when someone shoves a man to his death. Ellie's sister-in-law, Summer, is the number one suspect so Ellie gets involved. This time around we have tied to blackmail, federal investigations, terrorism, and more. And of course Ellie winds up in danger, though at least this time it is not carelessness that puts her there.
This is the third book in a great cozy murder mystery series. It brings military spouse, professional organizer and amateur sleuth, Ellie Avery in this third adventure Ellie and her husband Mitch for a part of a tour to Washington DC. While on the tour, Ellie witnesses a man being pushed in front of this train at the train station. The victim is a groundskeeper and Ellie's sister-in-law's Summer becomes the prime suspect because witnesses see her push the man off the platform. The rest of it is cozy mystery material. I enjoy reading these types of books, even for a male reader of the sub genre. They provide a compelling whodunit with interesting characters. The sleuth is also an everyday, average Jane (or Joe) just happens to have the habit or "knack" for stumbling upon a mystery ( and dead bodies). It's interesting to see how an average person to deal with the investigation, sometimes quite humorous and entertaining.
I don't think I'm going to continue with this series. Ellie gets on my last nerve. I don't so much mind an amateur accidental detective, but this is her third murder "investigation," and she's still making stupid decisions that endanger herself and everybody around her. Refusing to give information to the police because it's "just circumstantial" and "they probably wouldn't believe me" and "Detective Fill-in-the-blank doesn't like me" is really, REALLY stupid. Plus, she's kind of annoying.
The writing is okay. The extensive cast of characters is confusing...you need a playbill to keep everyone straight. I do like that she ties up all the loose ends at the end. Still not worth it, though.
The fact that the setting constantly changes in these books keeps them fresh. It takes the cozy mystery genre into a welcome new direction. The level of suspension of disbelief is greatly reduced, taking things from "well, that's unlikely to ever happen in a million years," and leaving them at "well, this chick is just rather unlucky, isn't she?" It's a very, very nice change. The characters are well rounded and the plots are well thought out. This book, and the others in the series, are enjoyable light reads.
Rating: 3.5 Stars!! Review: This was my first time reading a book/series by this author and i wanted to like this one since Cozy Mysteries are usually my thing BUT this was fell flat for me.
The Characters were ok and The Setting was good but if the First 4 Chapters werent so boring i would of rated this one higher than 3.5 Stars!!
I will read more books by this author BUT This one just wasnt for me!!
I have enjoyed this series, which seems to be under two different names, but did not enjoy this one as much. Still a good, easy cozy read, but just not as interesting.
Ellie, her husband, and friends are In Washington, D.C. for a training class/vacation. While the men are in class, the wives are sightseeing. There are a few characters and details that don't make a lot of sense in real life, but are important for the plot. The group witnesses a man falling in front of a subway train. Accident or murder? And Ellie's sister-in-law seems to be connected. Overall, this seemed to be a bigger stretch than usual.
I was sad when Ellie found out that she and Abby were heading to different locations because of their husbands' assignments. But don't worry, it was all fixed at the end.
mystery inside another mystery but in the end, they were all connected. I don't know how the authors thought up all these angles. Just amazing!
I really enjoy this series. I also love the parts where Olive gets on the phone. So cute...
Ellie Avery is in Washington D. C. with her husband Mitch. While he attends classes, she and other wives do the tourist thing. However, a fatal incident at the Metro station causes Ellie to begin wondering what is happening.
A military vacation isn’t what Ellie thought it would be. Danger and intrigue followed her to Washington DC. But she handled it like the trouper she is. Great book.
Another good one in this series. It was fun following along with the story. I did not have it figured out, but enjoyed getting to know Mitch's sister more. Plus I enjoy getting to know the other wives a bit. Looking forward to reading the next one.
Too long! Maybe because I didn't like the characters and it seemed to jump in the story with no warning, maybe because I was listening to it and that's the only reason I finished the book. Too many people just happen to be brought together and all of them are telling lies!
I love Sara Rosett’s books but this one did not work for me. I didn’t enjoy the setting and I missed the base and all the neighborhood story. I really struggled with the narration. And it was just hard to get through.
This story really held my interest. I really like the characters. The Washington DC setting was nice to read about too. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
