I will be so honest I didn't like the training camp story and I found Kawai so annoying. This was probably the volume that I enjoyed the least so far but I hope the next one is better when it moves on to new things.

Study camp has somehow become the battleground for the future of Itan High. Their opponents are disciplined, feisty, and lead by a girl who turned Tadano down, but has a huge crush on him still. Whatever might possibly happen?

Maybe it’s me, but I do not have volumes 1 & 2 readily at hand to confirm the earlier appearances of Tadano’s one-time crush, Kawai. Even with the quick synopsis, I do think it’s emblematic of this series’ odd assumption that I remember a dang thing about who is who (with some exceptions) between volumes.

Anyway, this gets off to a good start because of the hi-jinx of Icho, whose turn as proxy chair is basically her being as useless as she was as a student, but now with abuse of power to go with it.

When it comes time to reveal the villainous other school, it turns out that the calls might actually be coming from inside Itan High, which is a fun turn and, despite the school being on the line, Icho would far rather goof off and have fun than worry about it.

The backstory between Tadano and Kawai is actually pretty funny, as it shows the incredibly simple Tadano during a phase where he’s trying to be cool and failing so hard at it. She rejects him to get his head out of his butt, but doing so is part of a long-term life plan she forgot to share with Tadano.

Cue the competition, which has a predictable end, but the loquacious Kawai and her non-stop logic make a good foil for Komi and it is nice to see the latter not just rolling over because somebody is trying to get up in her grill over her boyfriend.

You can see the seeds for Kawai’s downfall being sown the second she mentions how pointless high school friends are, when that’s been the whole point of the entire series, so it’s not exactly a secret, although I am old and jaded enough that I do agree with her take on high school relationships as a general rule.

Sometimes predictability can be weaponized, mind you, as both Kawai and Komi throw down the gauntlet and literally seconds later the room assignments are due to be changed, which is a brutally sharp comedic tic the series could use more of.

Things are broken up a little by a chapter featuring the socially anxious Komorebi, who is kind of ‘Komi, but talks’ and I kind of like her stories more than the main one. They have a bit more heart.

Where this starts to flop out is once the Kawai and Komi roommates thing happens, as the back half of the story goes pretty much to the dogs. Their shared accommodation and Komi trying to kill with kindness aren’t exactly riveting and the joke density plummets.

The quiz that makes up the big competition is way, way too long for how few gags are in there (finally, hemorrhoid humour, said nobody ever) and the way that Kawai dooms herself isn’t overly exciting. It tries to do something with the rival idea, but can’t quite manage.

Plus there’s a Najimi game/event that is way below their usual standard and features a visit from Yamai, aka contender for worst manga character ever. There’s just not enough here to shore up a weak back half. I mean, it shoehorns in a boring beach scene and an aquarium visit for pity’s sake.

When Komi lands a joke, it damn well lands a joke. Icho is so incredibly annoying this volume, but in a way that’s deliberate and called out constantly by everybody around her and I think her hilarious immaturity makes this for me.

The rest of it is take-or-leave, which is pretty much about what I expect from current Komi. It’s always got a high note or two, but tends to underplay itself most of the time. No different here.

3.5 stars - there’s a lot of good jokes in here for something so incredibly long in the tooth. Shame that Yamai continues to waste digital ink (if I ever have to have a rep as a reviewer, part of me hopes it’s ’that one guy who won’t stop hating on Yamai every volume’) and it can’t hold onto its laughs with any consistency.

As much as I continue to love this series, this is far and away the weakest volume so far. The "rival character" kawai SUCKS. She's insufferable and a terrible person. Why Komi bothered to find her at the end is anyone's guess. Hell I dislike her more than Yamai, and she's the absolute worst!

This whole study training arc is way too long with very little payoff. I kinda liked the quiz show but it really does not need to take up the whole volume. It is unfortunately poorly executed and kind of hard to get through. Also, Tadano is barely in this!! I really hope the next volume picks up steam again, this is way below standard for this series.

The things I did like:
Komorebi!! I want a whole volume of her story honestly. She's so sweet and her story has lots of genuine heart and sweetness.

Najimi is back more! I've missed them. The prank is not thier best but it's still fun.

Shiina has a nice moment with Komi allowing thier "friendship" to deepen a bit more.

Tadano's middle school stuff is actually very funny. His whole look and mood is great and it totally forgot about that (volume 1 was EONS ago).

Well, well, another love triangle!

Frankly, this one was too rushed. The reason Tadano, Rumiko, and Komi's triangle worked was because it had proper development. This one, however, not so. All we have is the past story. Which was quite decent.

I thought Kawai would be someone better than this. This is basically Yamai, but for Tadano. If that makes any sense.

I loved Komi’s growth this volume, she tried her best to understand her feelings and really to someone about them (Shiina). Confronting Kawai was a great way to show her that Tadano doesn’t like her because of her achievements but because of her personality and because she’s her. It doesn’t matter if Kawai would have won a thousand times, it wouldn’t change Tadano’s feelings for Komi. This was a fun volume, I enjoyed reading it a lot, I did miss Tadano a bit because he’s not shown a lot.

Study Camp was never going to be anything but raucous gamesmanship for this slew of teenagers who really, probably, honestly, should know better by now. Regardless, with university entrance exams fast approaching, Komi and her pals are poised to pass or fail on their own merits (or something like it), assuming they can stay focused long enough to survive the torture of studying while ignoring the beach.

KOMI CAN'T COMMUNICATE v29 is a simple volume that takes an odd but not unexpected view of Komi and Tadano's relationship. As the class breaks toward Study Camp, it turns out the other high school set to borrow the local facilities is the stomping ground to one Rami Kawai. Kawai is stately, gorgeous, the student council president, and also, apparently, Tadano's first crush (who turned him down). As for how relevant and necessary this reunion with past loves can or should be, readers find the current discourse has far less to do with Tadano's tendency to build friendships with dazzling young ladies (despite his awkwardness) and far more to do with Komi's ability to surmount peer pressure.

Notably, Kawai isn't a likeable character. Perhaps by design, the girl is a bully: she belittles Komi's friendships, antagonizes Komi's affections, and presupposes her own past relationship with Tadano, however duplicitous, as being more fertile and fruitful than anything Komi might conjure in the present. This well-intentioned vendetta-setting could prove intriguing if it weren't so obviously brokered as a stepping-stone for Komi to learn how to stand up for herself and fight back against an obvious narcissist.

The current volume's only notable exchange comes by way of Muzuka Shiina, the cynical edge-lord girl with the asymmetrical haircut. For example, when Komi laments she can't to speak to Tadano or her friends about the emotional toll of rebuking Kawai's arrogance, Shiina comically flops into a chair and decries: "How about asking me for advice? After all, we're not friends." Crude, sure, but 100% correct. Shiina is rude and makes people uncomfortable, but she listens. And it's only after Komi's spills her worries to a non-friend that she settles on the right course of action. At this point in the manga, the narrative is running dry on wholesome moments, but the critical point of conversation when Shiina says, "Then say that," in response to Komi's rambling for why she loves Tadano more than Kawai, is genuine.

KOMI CAN'T COMMUNICATE v29 is another soft, tentative step toward an assuredly definitive conclusion. As readers likely know by now, scouring each volume's pages for a scene or two of memorable charisma is increasingly difficult, but often worth the effort.

I picked this up as part of my continuation of the series.
“Komi Can’t Communicate, Vol. 29” continues to follow Komi and her friends during their high school days. In this volume the gang must work together to win the knowledge contest so that their school can stay open. Komi also meets someone who also is in love with Tadano, and she is not ready to let Komi continue to date him.
This was a very interesting volume because I feel like it really highlighted how competitive Komi actually is. She is not a meek person, she just struggles to communicate, and so it was interesting to see her not only compete to save her school, but also put up a fight to prove that she should be dating Tadano.
The whole plot line that they might lose their school if they do not win this competition is so comical and over the top. I cannot imagine a scenario in which this might actually happen, but it makes for highly entertaining media!
It was cool to be introduced to a character that rivals Komi in all ways. She is just as smart and talented as Komi, and therefore she is not at all intimidated by Komi. I think this character also made Komi see how much she does care about Tadano, and how much she wants to fight for him.
I am curious to see where this story goes next!

***volume review***

Volume highlights:

-Study camp arc! I honestly wish this one was a little longer as there is plenty of opportunities for Komi-esque shenanigans
-I do like having Kawai as an antagonist. When we saw Komi get jealous and competitive before, she really didn't bring her full emotion because she loved Rumiko too much as a friend to outright get angry at her. Kawai finally brings that out of her and makes her honest about how strongly she feels for Tadano.
-Likewise, Kawai is a great foil to Komi in how she knows what to say and is very vocal about things. She's beautiful, intelligent, athletic, etc. just like Komi, but she's got both a determination and a social disconnect that put her as a sharp contrast
-The flashback to Tadano's "phase" had me rolling - thank god he gave that one up!
-I love Icho's ridiculous hjinks as the proxy chair - this woman is an icon and makes me laugh every time
-Our brief look at Komorebi's break is also so sweet and a great change of pace from the other chapters
-I also adore Rumiko's brief appearance in here - really, I would adore a series just focused on her!

First off...it has been a long time since I reviewed the last volume...and upon picking this volume up...I can see that a healthy dosage of this manga is paramount to smiling lots. This volume gives a little backstory on Tadano and we meet his very first love!?!? And if I say anymore about this character I feel I will give away the reveal which is what makes this a 4 star (just a hair short of 5 star) book. This book was sooooooooo good. Obviously if you like the series this volume (cannot believe we are going strong at volume 29....I think we still have lots of stories left to tell) will give you more of those good vibes and keep you interested from cover to cover.

A Komi rival, who is basically an anti-Komi herself, shows up and she has history with Tadano!

This was supposed to be an awaited arc, but it just doesn't have the charm of the earlier ones. For one, Kawai came out as annoying.

I was expecting a boss level encounter for Komi and Kawai, given the latter's history with Tadano. But it just doesn't hit as good as before. This series might just be running out of steam with the way stories are lately.

Still, nothing pushes you more than a rival, and Komi develops in spades in this volume. Komi is on the right path on becoming the best version of herself.

- study camp!!
- as soon as i saw those crazy ass eyelashes i knew kawai was gonna be a problem
- unironically tadano's chunibyou phase goes hard
- kawai being obsessed with tadano and only rejecting him so that he could get his head out of his ass and act normal is actually funny
- ofc she duels komi for tadano as if he is not even part of the equation like huh
- "now you two have to break up" how about i break your legs kawai
- komorebi interlude boring
- the quiz competition is very long but i learnt some useful japanese grammar so i think i won more than anyone else did
- waiting for yamai to get killed off ngl

A study camp competition for Tadano initiated by Komi's roommate Kawaii. Makes no real sense as Komi even tells her that Tadano likes her not because she is more intelligent or even prettier than anyone else. But nevertheless they compete in study camp quizzes and so on.

There's a bried moment in the inevitable end I like where Komi is sitting on the beach next to Kawaii and the latter is crying, and Komi is not sure, having asserted her dominance and asserted her deeper connection to Tadano, how to navigate the situation. After all, she's not a mean girl. . .

But otherwise, there's not much here to push things forward.

This volume revolves around Tadano and Komi's class going on a study camp trip with a rival high school. Tadano's first crush goes to the rival school and it turns out that she still has feelings for Tadano. Believing that Komi is not worthy to date Tadano, she challenges Komi to a series of competitions to see who is more worthy of Tadano's affections. It's nice to get a peek into Tadano's past and to see Komi working hard to fight for Tadano and their relationship. It's a nice change of pace from the school content while still advancing the character development.

Back to Komi after a while (because people doesn't return things to the library in time), and I don't know if it was because of the break, but I was back to enjoying Komi, Tadano, et al's adventures more than in the last previous volumes.

Summer camp turned up being better than expected, probably thanks to Kawai, Tadano's old flame, that it was surprisingly quite similar to Komi in some ways?

I enjoyed the new peak into Hitohito's past, Kawai wasn't annoying, which was quite a feat given the circumstances, and the whole thing ended up reading as a breeze.

4 stars.

This was a cute volume. Really liked seeing the two schools battling out. Its also interesting to see the other school's own "Komi" and how different they are as beloved popular girls. Their little rivalry over Tadano is fun to see. I love watching Komi stand up for herself and not cower, even as she still deals with anxiety.

Still love Nakanaka. Still detest Yamai and everything about her characterization.

Sabe o que faltou neste volume? O Tadano hahahahaha

This was great! I loved the new characters and appreciated the much needed conflict introduced in this volume. It was funny and sweet, with a great couple of chapters focusing on fan favorite minor characters. I loved the follow up on Tadano's awkward phase and the interactions between Iida and Komi.

Unnecessary temp rival

Although the arc was actually more cohesive this time it felt completely forced and unnecessary. I feel like the series is really run out of original ideas and has actually started to get a little boring. I hope they wrap up soon... I don't think I want to read much more anymore...
