The writing was, in itself, well done. However, too much of ‘real life’, especially what I know of the true costs of living in NYC, paying for rent and other services, had me rolling my eyes more than once and pulled me out of the story every time when such a situation was presented (I know I need to suspend belief when reading any books with ‘Billionaire’ in the title). It got to the point where I started skimming the book after i was three quarters of the way though it because I couldn’t suspend belief any longer.
An example has to do with Todd’s age in light of his profession as an ER doctor. Based on the ages of the characters presented in the book, Abigale was 25 years old and, presumably, so was Todd since they dated in high school when he left to attend college but now he’s a famous ER doctor at that age?
I won’t even go into Abigale’s change of ‘careers’ of which she had no background, training or experience. It is so silly and incongruous, it’s laughable.
And a minor nit, Chance’s name was changed to ‘Chase’ near the end of the book.
I can only surmise that the target reader is someone in their early twenties. As I had mentioned earlier, the writing is well done but some of the situations presented in the storyline were more than a little out of tune with reality, from my perspective, even with this book being part of the ‘billionaire’ trope.
This short novella was a story that pulled at your heartstrings. This is the story of high school sweet hearts. They lived in Hudson, New York and he had decided to go to medical school in New York City and so his father told him to drop his girlfriend and concentrate on medical school. While in college his parents die in a freak accident and over night he becomes a billionaire because he's left an inheritance by his parents. He became known as a billionaire doctor. She felt that Todd Barkley broke her heart 💕. Abigale in the meantime went to college in Hudson for advertising. She has graduated and decides to go visit her sister who has moved to New York. Her sister Piper who's younger, she is 21 and Abigale is 25, decides to go to a bar/club and in that decision comes the person she feared she didn't want to see, her ex-boyfriend Dr. Todd Barkley. This is where this second chance story begins for Abigale and Todd. This was a really good read 👍🏾. It was like a good romantic comedy.
Abigale Jones’ sister Piper pleads with her to come to Manhattan for a visit and to celebrate Abigale’s marketing degree. Her sister will never give up on her, so she reluctantly agrees. Todd Barkley, the guy she thought she would have forever with, dumped her in senior year of high school to prepare for med school and the move to the big city. So Abigale tries to avoid even going there, even though chances of ever seeing him again are probably zero. Piper drags her to a nightclub the first night where they stand in a long line to even get in! Once inside, Abigale sits at a table, waves for her sister who headed to the bar… and then sees Todd staring at her! Todd’s parents had died in an airplane accident, leaving a fortune to Todd. And he is a prominent ER doctor in Manhattan which adds to his wealth. As Piper walks back to their table, Abigale begins to tell her they have to leave right now – but Todd is behind her, greets them and orders drinks, acting like he didn’t rip her heart out. It turns out Todd was with a woman who joined them and talked incessantly about how men at the hospital hit on her constantly. Nikole, a nurse, has eyes only for Todd. He, however, never stopped loving Abigale. He had moved to New York after his parents pressured him to do so and had offered to pay for his education. Does Abigale hate him now after the way he left her? Would she ever give him a second chance to tell her he still loves her? Or would she be too uncomfortable to live in Manhattan or even agree to marry him?
This was a well-written storyline that let the reader instantly connect with the characters. There was so much pain to overcome, but still so much love for each other. But big decisions would need to be made. Do they have the courage to take that step?
Sometimes fate gives you a second chance but will these two see this as a second chance Abigale met the love of her life in high school thinking they had their future ahead of them but he left during senior year with the claim of going to medical school leaving her heart broken in so many pieces and have to work to put the piece back together now that she has her sister is wanting her to come and visit her in Manhattan but she has her reserves because that is where her ex. left her to headed right to New York. Todd sexy as all get out billionaire doctor who left the one girl he couldn’t forget to head off to school but even through school he never forgot his girl but wanting a second chance may never happen until the night she walks in with her sister to the very bar he happens to be having a drink and the moment he sees her and all the memories come rushing back to him. But she is so angry with him, leery of his actions and barley has anything to say to him yet the attraction is just as intense from the moment they catch each other’s eye and him not being the arrogant billionaire sits at their table and talk like he didn’t just dump her leaving everything unresolved to top it off his date is super annoying. Will Abigale give him a chance to explain himself can he explain himself, will they see the second chance right in front of them, will she forgive him, can he even earn her forgiveness, and do they get happiness the second time around?
A quick, light, modern fairytale of a second chance... where everything works out for the guy and gal in the end.
Todd left his high-school sweetheart to go on to college and medical school and pursue a prestigious and well compensated career. It was pressured, but he didn't realize the mistake he was making when he left. Abigail was heartbroken and is still trying to get her legs under her when they cross paths again, years later in Manhattan. But she has no intention of letting Todd back into her life again, ever.
I struggled to connect with the story from the beginning. I found all the characters a bit iffy and annoying. Some more than others. Too many misunderstood intentions. One too many unnecessary lies to avoid loss. One too many manipulative women putting wrenches in the relationship. And then problems too easily resolved. But the latter part of the book redeems some of that. It's an okay read with a clear HEA.
Abigale and Todd had a relationship, but he left her behind to go away to school. They never really have gotten over each other, though, just going through life and pretending. When Abigale sister, Anna, asks her to come visit, she's hesitant because that's where her ex went after medical school and she's worried about running into him. Well, she was right to worry, because they run into each other while out at a bar. They are still immensely attracted to each other, but Abigale is so angry with Todd over how he left. Todd is determined to show her, though, how good they could be together.
This second chance story isn't really enemy to lovers, they just had some things that they needed to sit and talk about. They also deserved the chance to see what kind of relationship they could form as adults. Regardless, I didn't dislike either of these characters and it was nice to see Todd working to show Abigale how much he wanted her.
This book is perfect. The book is about Abigale who had her heart broke by her high school sweetheart Todd. He went to medical school and lives in New York. Abigale graduated with a marketing degree but hasn't really started to use it. She goes to New York to see her sister and ends up seeing Todd again after all the years apart at a club. The two end up having a really rough start as Abigale has a hard time trusting the playboy billionaire doctor again. She decides to stay in New York and start an animal rescue center. I am going to leave the rest of the book a surprise, but when you think that Abigale and Todd are not going to work out things take a huge turn. I love how everything comes full circle in the book, and it is a page turner that will have you wondering what is going to happen next until the very end.
This thought this was a great second chance story. Abigale and Todd met in high school and then they still assumed they had a bright future together and nothing could be further from the truth when he disappears before the end of the year to go to medical school. Deeply hurt you have to get back on your feet. Years later it appears that both have not been able to forget each other and when she suddenly walks into the bar with her sister where he is just having a drink and he sees her, it turns out that the feelings for both are still there, only Abigale does not trust Todd anymore. Will they be able to forget the old hurt and take the second chance at love? A real page turner and a must read.

Todd and Abigale were high school sweethearts until he ended things with her breaking Abigale's heart. Years later they meet again at a night club and Todd can't believe that the woman he has been thinking about is there. It starts them along their path again. Will Abigale forgive Todd for breaking her heart years ago and will their reconnection lead them to happiness this time around. This story had me in their corner together a second chance to get things right between them.

I really enjoyed this book from start to end. The story captured me and held my interests. A sweet story about a billionaire doctor and his high-school sweetheart. Having parted only to find one another years later to overcome hurdles and come out stronger. Highly recommend.
Doctor's Second Chance is a wonderful romantic journey. Anna Pierson wraps an enjoyable plot around well-crafted characters. Stray pets, charities, doctors, and more!
