Where do I even begin to describe the whirlwind of emotions that "The Jewels of January" by Julia Heart stirred within me? From the moment I picked up this book, I was transported back to 1991 Austin, where the air buzzed with possibility and the neon lights of Sixth Street illuminated the path of two unforgettable characters.

Jewels, with her quiet strength and vulnerability, felt like a mirror reflecting my own struggles and fears. Her journey from self-doubt to empowerment resonated with me on such a personal level that I found myself shedding tears of both sorrow and joy as I followed her every step of the way.

And James... Oh, James. His unwavering belief in Jewels, despite the odds stacked against them, tugged at my heartstrings in a way I never expected. His determination to carve his own path, even in the face of adversity, inspired me to reevaluate my own dreams and aspirations.

But it wasn't just the characters that captivated me; it was the way Julia Heart brought 1991 Austin to life with her vivid descriptions and nostalgic prose. I could practically feel the heat of the Texas sun on my skin and hear the distant strains of music drifting from Sixth Street as I devoured page after page.

As I reached the bittersweet conclusion of "The Jewels of January," I found myself overcome with a sense of gratitude for having experienced such a powerful story. It's rare to come across a novel that not only entertains but also touches your soul in profound ways, and this book did just that.

In the end, "The Jewels of January" is more than just a romance; it's a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of love. Julia Heart has created a masterpiece that will stay with me long after I've closed the cover, reminding me to embrace my own journey and never lose sight of what truly matters.

I received this book as a gift from the author, and wow! This book was beautiful, fun, sad, upsetting...it literally covered every possible emotion. The relationship between Jewels and James was tender, and the instant connection between them was so sweet. I thought they were perfect for each other. And then there is Frank...well let's just say I wished I could reach into my Kindle and throttle him myself.
The author touched on some very tough subjects. Subjects that may make some people uncomfortable, but ultimately led to some amazing character development and the perfect ending.
I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves romance and strong characters.
I loved this book so much, and I will be buying a physical copy of this once I am no longer on a book buying ban!!

I loved this book!! It caught my attention from the very beginning. To know that this is semi-autobiographical just has me in awe that most of these “characters” that I found myself getting attached to are real people! I laughed and I teared up. I found myself cheering and saying, “What the heck?!” Thank you for reaching out and sending an e-ARC copy to me, Julia!! You did a wonderful job with this book! ❤️

I absolutely loved everything about this book. It pulled me in right away and I could not put it down. It was very beautifully written and for it being 95% of the authors life story it made me feel so much more knowing that this was something she went through. I have such mad respect for indie authors and when I tell you I could not stop reading, I was HOOKED. It was raw, edgy and romantic all in the same sense. It had me feeling so many emotions and by far one of the best books I’ve read this year.

So at the beginning of this book, I struggled getting into it, but only because I’m not really used to reading books set into a different time line. But once I got over that, I was able to really enjoy how Jewels and James interacted with one another.

One thing that I felt the Julia did a tremendous job at describing is how one might slowly realize that the job they have lived with for the last four years was actually a cult. How Jewels came to that realization was amazing and I loved how no matter what, James was always there for her. The Julia also wrote how I figured people back in 1991 felt and thought about AIDS. How all of the characters dealt with this topic was but refreshing and also surprising because I felt like that is exactly how things would’ve been back then. Knowing that the topic of AIDS was in this story did have we wondering why and when it would be brought up but Julia made sure that is was always done in a tasteful way. I mean, really every single trigger warning she has placed in this book was crafted and written in a tasteful way.

I definitely think that this book is worth a read!

“The Jewels of January” by Julia Hart, it was a good book, and it was solid. It is a slow burn. I was new to this type of story and it was interesting. Surprisingly enough, I’ve never read about a guy falling in love with a stripper in a strip club. I’ve read a lot of books. It’s about Jules who goes by January when she’s dancing in the club and James. Jules is in a cult and being pressured to strip by her cult leader, Frank. She’s been experiencing a lot of psychological stress thanks to Frank. She meets James and James is a bartender who wants to open his bar and it’s a sweet book. He has an immediate attraction to her and vice versa. She’s working out things, so it takes a minute for them to you know some balance. It is a five star read and I think it deserves some attention. It’s her debut novel and any writer who has ever written a book knows how hard it is to get the first book on the ground. I commend her on her work and writing this book. I can’t wait to see what she does in the future.

This book is captivating from the start. You are taken into the journey of a stripper who needs a little help to find her way in the real world. This is based in the 90's and the details in the book are everything. The topic in this book is raw and real.

January is a stripper who lives in a therapy home, she believes that her situation is a normal situation. However, when James comes into her life she soon starts to realize that it might not be as normal as she thought.
James helps January open her eyes a little in regard to her community. He helps her realize that what she considers normal is actually not. It is very controlled, toxic, and a cult-like situation. However, James never pushes January out of her community, on the contrary, he helps her find her way.

When I first started reading this book, I thought January was in a pimp house of some sort and didn't know if I would be able to continue. However, I did and I am grateful. This book is a good rom-com-like book and even though the topic is a serious one, it helps that the author wrote the book in a more light way. This kind of thing really happens to women all around the world and people on the outside always wonder why they never leave. This book will help you view it in a different way. The details are so good that you can picture everything in your mind and envision the way things should look or feel.

"Jewels of January" gives a glimpse into January's journey to the road of recovery and getting out of a tough situation. I hope those who read this book, take something from it. because this book is honestly so good it will have you continue reading. It will impact you in different ways you could never imagine. The psychological dynamic of the story is so good. It was handled well and in a way that was not scary or frustrating. This is overall a really good romance story with a lot more meaning to it.

I would love to see what other books Julia Heart writes and would love to read them. She is such a sweet and amazing person with a story to tell.

This story follows Jewels, a young adult whose personal demons have aligned her with a controlling self-help community. Enter James, who is determined to make his own path and create his own future. Their chance meeting created sparks, neither one of them expected and started them both on a journey of a flirtatious and forbidden friendship that will push them both out of their comfort zone to face their own obstacles. Will they be able to move past their own fears to have a happy ending?

I enjoyed this book, and there were moments when I found myself worried for the two main characters. This book also allows you to get to know other characters in the book, and you find yourself concerned for them as well. I would recommend this book as it is an easy and quick-read love story mixed with intrigue, funny dialogue, introspective decisions, and some holding-your-breath moments.

TW: Emotionally Abusive situations, HIV/AIDS, Anxiety, Bullying, Cults, Depression, PTSD.

Thank you to the author for allowing me the privilege of reading and reviewing your book!

I could not put this book down!

The setting for this book is Austin, Texas in 1991. It follows our FMC Jewels who works as a stripper and goes by January at work. She's also trapped in a cult, though she doesn't realize she's trapped in a cult until she meets and falls for James, and ultimately has to fight for her freedom so she can have the life she wants.

You wouldn't think a story like this, especially since it's based on the authors real life story, would leave you feeling lighter with such heavy topics, but that's exactly how I felt when I finished it. There is a lot of humor that balances out the dark topics, and self reflection that happens after denial. Jewels has an innocence that James brings out in her as he peels back her confident January layers. James was a fantastic character because he didn't push Jewels to make the decision he wanted her to make, as that was what she was already dealing with with Frank. Instead, he supported her and encouraged her to make the decision to stay or leave on her own.

I loved the relationship Jewels had with her cult sisters and I absolutely despised Frank, the leader of the cult.

This book offers lessons on trauma and trauma bonding, the effects of group think and social isolation. It talks about abuse, anxiety, and finding yourself after everything you were has been stripped away.

I highly recommend this book!!!

I am at a loss for words. This novel captivated me from page one. In essence, it's about a stripper, trapped in a cult and the sweet romance that helps her to see she is more than who she thinks she is.

January's story is raw and real. I may not have ever been in a cult, but I have survived a horrible relationship filled with the same kind of mental and emotional control that Frank, the cult leader, implements on his members. I could totally relate with the idea of wanting desperately to escape, but believing I couldn't. Like January, I lost my identity and didn't know where I ended and my ex began. It was a trying situation to be in and I cheered SO HARD for the female MC each time she grew and changed and ARCed quite beautifully. I absolutely adore how James helped support Jewels and taught her to see her inner strength, but that he was not the one that got her out, she did so all on her own. When she found her power, I cried. I also couldn't breathe at the end when I thought all might go to hell in a handbasket, with potential fallout from Frank.

IN the end, this book is a must read. If you love layered, complex characters, sticky, tricky relationships, sweet and swoony love (not spicy) with an absolutely compelling premise...check this gem out. You will not be disappointed!

Thought Provoking True Story

Julia Heart wrote a compelling book about a challenging portion of her life.

James met friends at a birthday party held at a strip club. He saw January and was immediately obsessed with her. Unfortunately, he overheard the she was involved in a cult which caused concern, but he can’t get her off his mind.

January seems interested in James but has to make many decisions before she can think about moving on. She believes she is being emotionally healed in the group in which she resides, but is she? James does his best to make January understand that she deserves better. Unfortunately, an incident occurs which causes January to lose the traction she had gained with James’ assistance. She makes a decision that may alter her life but she needs to be there for her friend.

This book was emotional for me as I know there are many people that have been affected by cults. What can we do as family and friends to help them make the wise decision to leave? The cult details were fascinating, but it pains me to hear that people are in a mental state where someone takes advantage of those in need.

I am so proud of Julia for sharing her thought-provoking story. Hopefully this book will provide hope to those in need of healing.

A Raw and Emotional Journey of Strength and Love

The Jewels of January by Julia Heart is a story like no other - unique, emotional, and impossible to put down. It’s about a young woman, January, who struggles with severe anxiety and ends up trapped in a cult after trusting the wrong person. Forced into a life as a stripper, she faces incredible challenges while trying to hold onto her true self.

Even though the book deals with difficult and possibly triggering topics, Julia handles them with care and thoughtfulness. There’s even a trigger warning list included, which I really appreciated.

The writing is amazing - clear, engaging, and full of personality. The witty banter between the characters adds some much-needed lightness, and the story’s emotional depth is so real. I loved seeing January’s journey as she grew stronger, balancing her external strength as a stripper with the internal struggles of self-doubt and anxiety. Her relationship with James, the one person who truly makes her feel safe, is beautifully written. Their connection feels like fate, and their chemistry is sweet and heartwarming.

This is a powerful and unforgettable read. I highly recommend The Jewels of January and can’t wait to see what Julia Heart writes next!

I absolutely loved this book. I wasn't sure how to feel about it at first when I learned it was semi-autobiographical, only because I'd never read anything in that sense before. But I really enjoyed it. It definitely has some heavier topics, but it really added something special for me as I read it, knowing that a version of these events really happened, and that the author was semi recounting her own lived experiences. It made the harder hitting emotions hit that much harder. It made me root for her, and James even more. It added an extra layer of attachment to the outcome.

I was asked to read this book by the author, after commenting on one of her booktok posts, to read and review it as a smaller booktoker myself. I must say it was an absolute joy to be given that opportunity. I am always nervous to step out of my reading norms for a review request (I say that like i've had many, but this is only my 2nd). But this read was so very worth it. You are pulled in right away by the characters and you root for them as they grow and come in to their own. The ending is, in my opinion, perfect! Would definitely recommend.

Raise your hand if you love a book that is heavy and happy at the same time!

simple summary: Set in 1991, this story follows a *DANCER* who meets a boy and falls in love. Only problem? She is in a cult and doesn't feel free to make her own choices.

This story handles multiple heavy subjects in an absolutely respectful and loving way. When we are discussing the cult, we aren't talking about a bunch of people who blindly follow an evil leader. We get to know the victims of this cult and see how a bad person can take a person when they are at their most vulnerable and use that vulnerability to control them. It is my understanding that this author experienced something similar in her lifetime, thus giving her the ability to treat these characters with love and respect.

Overall, this is my favorite kind of love story. One that is about so much more than a couple getting together. It is about self-discovery, self-respect, and inner strength. It's about community, kindness to your fellow man, and pure intentions. It's about dreams, how to reach for them, and what to do when we fall short. It was so touching and I can't wait to see what Julia Hart writes next.

I devoured this book in about three days, it was hard to put it down! Intriguing premise. Super fresh storyline (inspired by true events!).

The Jewels of January is about an exotic dancer who, over the course of the story, comes to realize that the home she has been coerced to believe was a "therapy group" to help her deal with her crippling anxiety is actually a cult with an abusive leader who is not trying to help those under his care at all, but himself. No one else in the cult understands what it is, being trapped on the inside. And once trapped, it's extremely difficult to leave.

One night at the club, she meets a handsome stranger - who is told she's off-limits because she's one of the "cult girls". But he can't take his mind off her...

So many twists and turns. Excellent non-linear character development with a great payoff in my opinion. A very modern romance. 5 Stars from me!

Wow!!!! I mean….wow!!

This is my first book by this author, but won’t be the last!!

I honestly wasn’t sure what I was really getting into with this stripper in a cult falls in love plot.

But wow!!! I am speechless to be totally honest. This book had me falling in love with the characters. Wanting to strangle other characters, celebrating, crying, and wanting to hold women as they cried from all the trauma.

I personally have never been part of a cult, but I would assume this is pretty spot on. Someone takes advantage of people when they are at their lowest and exploits all the things that hurt them, destroys them with the ploy of building them back up stronger. It’s all just sickening to be honest.

But this book was written in such a way that you went through all the emotions with the characters and really feel like you healed with them as well.

5 stars from me!! This is a must read!!!

What a wonderful literary fiction based on true events.
I had the privilege of messaging with Julia Heart before reading her book. I knew that this was based on her story and that most of the peoples names were changes, but they were real people.
I loved reading this story. It’s set in 1991 in Austin, Texas and it’s centered about Jewels life as she navigates some pretty tough realizations about her life.
If this was an entire work of fiction, it would have been brilliant, but I hate that I know a lot of these thing’s actually happened to Julia. It was still a wonderful story and made you really think about life back then and the things people never talked about.
She does have trigger warnings, because this book needs them. Not that it’s dark or scary, but there are topics that might make some uncomfortable.

I am beyond charmed by this book!! I showed up for the romance; stayed for the rom com with emotionally mature dialogue; and came away obsessed. Jewels is such a cool character, self aware but trapped. The view of Austin's 90's stripper scene is fun and racy, and I loved watching the local landmarks fly by nonstop.

The author's notes at beginning and end firmly situate this book in the writer's lived experience; I feel honored to have been offered a window into her psyche through the novel. Her writing is fresh, and it's fun to witness something a little less polished than most books. It's uniquely revelatory and vulnerable, or at least Heart effectively gets me to believe her through the prose.

I stayed up way too late devouring this book on too many nights! Off to bed. I hope she writes more!

Let 🎶Freedom🎶 Sing! And Dance 💃

I have never wanted to reach out to an author with so many questions as I had, while reading this story (could be the semi-autobiographical part & the fact that she is a great friend.)

This story is very enlightening, well written, highly entertaining and honestly made me want to give her a giant hug! 🫂

I didn’t see the twist coming at all. I wanted to kill Frank, myself, the entire duration of this story. The 🎶Freedom🎶 scene, where Jewels takes her power back was obviously favorite!

As someone who’s struggled with anxiety for a great portion of my life, I could totally relate to many of the feelings she went through.

Well done, Julia! I can’t wait to read your next book! 👏 👏 👏

What a way to debut! This is author Heart's first and after reading I certainly hope it won't be her last! Such a great read from start to finish. It has everything I could want from a book! Captivating with a uniqueness where we're taken not only into a cult but also a strip club. Done with fun and lightness, this book has great twists along the way as well as the push and pull of emotions this author brings. All of which make this a great read to binge! I highly recommend and am looking forward to seeing what Heart comes out with next!

I found this author through tik tok and was really blown away by the story. It was way more raw and emotional than I expected but there was also great banter and humor that helped balance out the story. James is the prototypical cinnamon roll character who shows tremendous sacrifice and patience for Jewels. I'd love the overall pace of the story as it kept me engaged from beginning to end. And as a millenial, I loved all the 90's references. This was a beautifully written story from an incredibly talented author. Must read!!

This is a well told story and made more interesting given that it's based on the true life of the author. If you are looking for a great, fun read with unexpected twists like getting out of a cult run by a misogynistic leader, this book delivers in spades!!!! Julia Heart deftly navigates with a light touch such difficult topics as PTSD, avoiding the traps of staying in victimhood and learning what it takes to claim her own power. I loved every word of this book and didn't want it to end. I look forward to more from her.

What an awesome first book - you rock Julia Heart!!!

This book was very different than some books I have read.

First and foremost, the fact that Julia put her life into this book and it represented her part of life was amazing.

I loved knowing that the book was based on a true story but also had that “fantasy-romance” spice to it.

Personally, for me, it took me a couple chapters to get hooked into the story but then after the first like 4 chapters, I was hooked. The story is well written and overall was enlightening to read.

I started reading this book as I healed from surgery. I didn’t expect to fall in love with this unconventional story about love the way that I did. I literally finished it in 3 days.
It was heartbreaking, intense, fun, overwhelming and rich all at the same time. A story about what it is to find yourself, to know yourself, to trust yourself and to love. It was beautiful and just what I needed.
Thank you Ms. Heart.
Looking forward to your next.
