Shows how inexpensive synthetic yarn and a crochet hook with an easily made handle can be used to produce the tightly crocheted stitches essential for creating rigid objects and presents directions for projects including baskets, hats, puppets, and a tote bag
I find myself rereading this book for a third time over 20 years or so. Its easy and personable writing style is misleading (in a good way) because it has a powerful amount of fresh ideas and concrete findings. The author takes on stitch gauge of course, and so much more: analyzing crochet hooks, synthetic yarn types, blocking & felting, and structural differences between single crochet in rows vs in spiraling rounds. It's applicable to many kinds of crochet projects, not just hats and baskets. The illustrations (by the author, I think) are also well conceived.
