I find myself rereading this book for a third time over 20 years or so. Its easy and personable writing style is misleading (in a good way) because it has a powerful amount of fresh ideas and concrete findings.
The author takes on stitch gauge of course, and so much more: analyzing crochet hooks, synthetic yarn types, blocking & felting, and structural differences between single crochet in rows vs in spiraling rounds.
It's applicable to many kinds of crochet projects, not just hats and baskets.
The illustrations (by the author, I think) are also well conceived.
