Illusions (Order of the Dragon, #1) ♦ Allison A. Andrews | Review
This book was an enjoyable and fast read. Illusions is the first volume of the Order of the Dragon series by Allison A. Andrews. Mostly my vampire urban fantasy reads take me on a trip to the United States. But this time I was dragged Down Under, to Brisbane.
Illusions ♦ Allison A. Andrews
Opinion
Illusions by Allison A. Andrews is a riveting journey through the shattered reality of Isolde, the protagonist, whose life transforms tragically when her fiancé falls victim to a paranormal entity. Andrews brilliantly crafts a narrative that seamlessly merges the ordinary with the extraordinary, taking readers on an emotional rollercoaster.
The strength of this book lies in its ability to make the paranormal feel startlingly real. Isolde's grief is palpable, drawing readers into her world of pain and confusion. The author's portrayal of Isolde's journey from a life of normalcy to one filled with supernatural elements is both compelling and seamless.
Andrews intricately weaves together the threads of grief, love, and the supernatural, creating a tapestry that keeps readers engaged from start to finish. Isolde's resilience and determination in the face of her world turning upside down are commendable, making her a relatable and inspiring character.
The pacing of the plot is expertly done, maintaining a perfect balance between the exploration of the paranormal and the emotional depth of the characters. While the storyline navigates the realm of the supernatural, it also delves into the depths of human emotions and the strength found in the midst of adversity.
Conclusion
Illusions by Allison A. Andrews captivates with its unique blend of the ordinary and the extraordinary, making it a compelling read for anyone seeking a mix of paranormal intrigue and heartfelt emotion. Andrews' storytelling prowess shines brightly in this gripping narrative, leaving readers eager for more.
I received an advance review copy for free from the author through BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Illusions is the first book in the Order of Dragons series and ends on a cliffhanger. This book does contain sensitive content such as death, violence and grief.
The plot: I liked it, however, while I was very intrigued and excited in the beginning by Chapter Nine I had started to lose interest and I did struggle to continue to read the book. There is a twist early on in the book that I did not see coming and it was very well done. It wasn’t until the ending that I felt it became interesting again and I thought the ending was brilliant.
Characters: No matter how hard I tried I couldn’t form an attachment to Isolde, or to any of the characters. However, I was curious about Liam’s backstory. He was very swoon worthy at times. I also liked that Isolde had a big family, which isn’t very common in vampire stories normally.
World building: An unusual twist on a vampire story. Definitely one of the best things about the story.
Feels: Where I should of been upset by what the heroine was going through, I honestly didn’t feel very much emotion towards this book, not sadness, happiness, anger or even dislike. I believe that lack of emotion is related to the lack of connection with the characters.
The writing style: It was good, at times a bit repetitive, but not so much so that it distracted from the story.
Overall, Illusions has a promising premise and world building, but by me struggling to form a connection with the characters, the story became uninteresting.
Plot: 📚📚📚 Character rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ World building: 🌎🌎🌎🌎 Sexiness: 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Feels: 🖤🖤 Writing style: 🖊🖊🖊🖊

Illusions is a modern fantasy vampire novel with a storyline driven by a prophecy of a girl destined to bring balance. You follow the unassuming 25-year-old Isolde’s life, which will forever be altered by emotional, physical, and psychic trauma. She wallows for a significant span and then suddenly snaps out of it and into the charismatic arms of a 500-year-old Irish vampire, Liam. So, age gap- check. Damsel in distress turns deadly, check.
The author’s style and voice are well-written, but the MFC’s charm peaks early and wanes at the end. There are some interesting enough plots and twists that make it worthwhile and entertaining. There are intense steamy scenes between Isolde and Liam. Overall, worldbuilding is solid and I’d recommend it for vampire enthusiasts.
I received this ARC book without compensation for an honest review.

Vampire Hunters vs. Vampires Chosen one Found family Slow-burn age gap romance Urban paranormal fantasy
Isolde has a perfect life until tragedy strikes, and she's whisked into a world of magic, prophecies, vampires, and good vs. evil.
There's grief, betrayal, action, steamy romance, shady guild behaviour, and a cliffhanger ending.
** OKAY NOW SPOILERS **
Isolde is living her best life until her fiance is brutally murdered in front of her, and she's saved from the same attacker by a mystery man who she later finds out has stalked (protected) her her entire life because he's a bazillion years old and also a vampire, but don't worry because he's the good kind and only does the sexy biting and not the rip your head off kind like the nightwalkers (aka bad guys).
She's mega sad because the love of her life is dead, but actually he's a nightwalker that's now obsessed with her and is stalking her until she's whisked away to the vampire hunting guild to train to be a vampire hunter because a prophecy said she had to.
The guild does some shady sh*t, Isoldes relationship with her twin sister frays, there's sexual tension brewing with Liam, I can't decide if it's creepy or not since he's, you know, followed her around since birth (bombastic side eye) but the spice is *chefs kiss* and he has an Irish accent, so I'll let it slide.
There's an ambush, OMG her sister is a nightwalker now too, and all over Isoldes dead/not dead ex-fiance, which is gross, but it turns out they had a fling years prior and apparently weren't over it (the betrayal!), Isolde is bitten. Is she evil?! Is she good?! The end.
** OKAY, NOW THOUGHTS **
The beginning really pulled me in. The middle was a little slow, but the ending drew me back, and the cliffhanger had me on the edge of my seat. The portrayal of grief was done really well and not like he's dead and forgotten in an instant. The spice is good but not the main point of the book, and the storyline can stand without it.
What did I want more of?
I would've loved Liam's POV throughout as I loved the epilogue from his view.
I also would've liked Will stalking Isolde played out more for tension, as well as more in depth of her training (I stan a training montage), I think these things would've added to the middle of the story where the pace slowed.
I enjoyed the story and will be reading the 2nd book, which is out at the end of this year.

Disclaimer: I received an ARC copy of this and here is my honest review
I loved this book and cannot wait for the 2nd one! The writing style was very easy to read and sucked me in instantly.
Isolde seems to have the perfect life. However, on her 25th birthday tragedy strikes and she finds out everything about her life has been an illusion. There is a whole other world out there. Not only that, she has a crucial part to play in keeping the world safe from darkness.
I love fantasy and magic but I'm not usually all that keen on vampires. This book was so different on the lore of vampires though which is one of the many things I found brilliant.
I loved the characters- I'm not sure whether I favour Isolde or Liam more *swoons for Liam* I found Isolde to be a brilliant, down to earth and realistic character...and very brave!
I found myself just wanting to devour this book and see what happened next... I'm still finding myself doing that as I desperately wait for book 2 🤣
I found the changing relationships and dynamics between Isolde's life and new life fascinating. I'm desperate to find out more about Patrice and the Order. I also love the idea of how this life that she had been living is such a big illusion and how everything can change so drastically in an instant.
I'm not normally a reader who expresses much on the outside. Embarrassingly enough as I read the last part of the book on a plane I heard myself audibly gasp very loudly several times 🤣 and had to hold back some tears. I did not see so many things happening in this book that did, it definitely kept me on my toes!
I highly recommend if you're into: Supernatural Magic Vampires Fantasy Strong female characters Swoon worthy male/new book boyfriend
Illusions is the first book in the Order of Dragons series and ends on a cliffhanger.
I dived into the story with gusto, as I love dragons, and I'm just a plain sucker for vampires 😉 It was also recommended to me by someone whom I adore as a fellow reader.
The beginning was splendid with a plot twist you just don't see coming 🤩. I did find myself easily distracted from the book, though, and try as I might, that didn't improve after the next few chapters. I missed the build-up to pivotal moments.
I'm happy to have finished the story, though, because at the ending it really picked up again with a final plot twist to weave it all together.
Love the unusual take on a vampire story.
Missed a connection to the MCs, which I usually really do. This could definitely be on me, though, as I'm a mood reader and I've been way too busy working lately.
I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and I was really surprised by how much I Loved it. Not normally my go to genre but the story line and writing style really hooked me and I can't wait for book 2 now! I loved how the author managed to capture the location it's set in so well and tell the story so it seemed realistic that this whole other dark and dangerous world could really be all around us and we just don't know it. Don't even get me started on how I now need to make room in my heart for another book boyfriend....
Our Aussie/NZ based Facebook group’s book club is reading this book in support of the author, who is currently undergoing treatment for cancer. This is not my usual genre, but I gave it a go because I knew I had to support an Aussie indie author, and someone who is active in the group that I am an admin in.
Because it is not a normal genre I would read I am giving it 3 stars, as I just didn’t click with it, however I strongly encourage anyone who loves urban fantasy to give this one a go, at the very least to support a beautiful person who is currently in need!!
Review: Allison creates a fantastical world in her new release that kicks off this dark fantasy trilogy. In this single POV fantasy story we meet Isolde and Liam who at first glance cannot be more different.
When we begin this book, Isolde is engaged and set to marry her first love but we learn quickly that things are not what they seem. After she loses her fiancé traumatically, she is thrown into a world of mythical monsters and struggles to comprehend how her once loving fiancé is now a dark vampire who hunts her nights. Enter Liam who teaches her how to defend herself in this new world she finds herself in.
This book is a great set up for the rest of the series and takes a lot of twists and turns that were shocking. Isolde is a strong FMC and I enjoyed reading her story as she struggles to accept her true identity, new powers and fate. The way her prophecy and powers were unveiled was terrific since we did not get it all at once. I thought the evolution she went through in this book was strong and the ties she had to her family and the new Order she fights for was done exceedingly well. As the book progresses, we see her pull back from her family since she is unable to merge the two worlds…little does she know other forces are at play that cause her sister to fall directly into Liam’s brother’s path.
This book is spicy. Isolde and Liam have a ton of spice that sets the pages on fire. I liked how Allison gave her time to mourn her loss but also tied in the inexplicable closeness she feels with Liam. I also enjoyed learning about Liam through Isolde’s eyes. The two of them are evenly matched and have a true bond that I hope to see developed through this series.
I found myself shocked at the ending and the events that lead up to it. I was not prepared for the cliffhanger we would get or the way the prophecy played out in this first book. The inclusion of both vampire brothers, the dark versus light struggle and Isolde’s sister Aurora truly threw me for a loop.
Rating: 4/5, an exciting beginning to a new trilogy!
✍️ Things couldn't be more perfect for Isolde as she's about to turn twenty five. Happy life and the man of her dreams who she's set to marry. That all changes when a stranger appears and turns it all around. When tragedy strikes, everything Isolde believed about herself and the people around her is actually an illusion and she must use these new powers to fight the evil that is coming and keep the world safe from dark forces.
This was a STUNNING Debut that had me hooked Unremittingly. I couldn't put it down. A real page turner. Highly recommend!!
The writing was polished and filled with an Astounding amount of Detail and Imagination in the Marvellous storytelling that was presented in a way that was Immersive and filled with a sense of adventure, danger and phantasm.
I sometimes find it hard to follow Fantasy Genre Fiction but considering this one was set in modern day Australia with a writing style that was easy flowing and continuous, I was able to grasp and feel complete enjoyment and sensation of the story and the characters.
I delighted in Isolde and Liam's connection, dialogue and chemistry with each other which was full of exciting moments and a wonderful feeling of mutual love and joy that was shared between them.
The story featured the right balance of elements to make it a memorable experience for the reader. Fantasy, Magic, Spice, Supernatural Beings and a engrossing plot that kept me hooked from start to finish.
After the cliffhanger of an ending I can't wait for book two!!
I received an ARC copy of Illusions in exchange for an honest review and absolutely loved it! I'm a sucker for a good vampire book and Illusions did not disappoint. I loved that the book is based in Brisbane (my hometown!) as it made the whole story line that much more relatable and really made me feel as though there's a hidden world just outside my door I don't know about. It's not often I read a book based somewhere I'm familiar with so the language and culture of the book was really enjoyable for me.
I looove that Isolde is a strong and independent character and doesn't solely rely on a big, masculine, testosterone fuelled man to look after her. Although Liam is all that and more (swoon!). Liam gives off a dark, broody, sexy and mysterious sort of vibe (think Henry Cavill) and I instantly loved his character. I wasn't expecting the unique take on the vampires and absolutely loved this twist of the plot.
The ending is a real cliff hanger and will have you dying to read the second book!
I'm an absolute sucker for a good vampire story, and Allison Andrews did not disappoint in that regard. I loved the unique take on vampires (daywalkers vs nightwalkers). I did think the book could have stood without the sex scenes, but part of that is mainly because I don't read erotic fiction very often. I struggle with knowing where scenes like that fit into the story, and I simply felt the story would have been stronger without them.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book, and will for sure check out book two. The 4 stars is for what I felt was gratuitous sex without a strong fit into the story.
I absolutely loved Isolde's character. The fact that Liam didn't coddle her once she discovered her abilities was incredible. He still watched over her, and protected her when necessary, but let her defend herself when possible. Most stories with vampires and a female lead leave me wondering if women are ever capable of anything, but this book left me with no doubt. I do highly recommend the book, even without a full 5 stars.
What I Liked: The plot has a lot of really good elements in it that combine into a unique story with well-loved tropes and themes, such as fated mates, the chosen one, and secret societies.
What I Didn’t Really Like: Unfortunately, I was never able to get fully engrossed in the story. I always felt like I was on the outside looking in at the events that were happening on the page. Some people like having that distance, but I would have like to have felt part of the action. I also really want to know why the secret society is called the order of the dragons when there are no dragons…at least, not yet.
Overall: If you are a fan of vampire romance, this is worth a read. Do note that it does end on a cliffhanger and the second book isn’t scheduled to be published until later in 2023.

I very much enjoyed this book. I will say this is the first vampire book I have read that was not a fanfic and I enjoyed it so much. I really liked Liam and how protective he is of Isolde. There was so much mystery and suspense in the book. I could never figure out what was coming next.
I think the only thing that would make me give it 5 stars is some of the scenes were slow to get to the main point. I also figured out pretty early on that her sister was going to turn into a vampire.
BUT I am super excited to read the rest of the series and I will keep my eye out for them! Thank you for letting me read this book!! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Isolde is whiney, her character is not likable. I understand she went through a trauma, she has a right to be depressed and in pain. However, probably 80% of the book is her moping around, but she's still able to move on and bang it out with someone else. There's not enough back story or character development on any of the characters to form a connection to them, or to care if they lived or died.
I'm confused as to why they came into contact with Will so often but refused to kill him off? Was it just to spare Isolde's feelings?
Also, at the ending they act as if it's a big reveal that she's meant to be a vampire, but we were literally told that probably 50 pages earlier. Why does it come as a shock?
It all felt childish to me.

I debated back and forth on my rating for this book. When I first started the book I found the story lacking in depth and creativity and it lost my attention a few times but as it progressed I found the author seemed to have gotten into her flow of they story and by the end of the book I was invested in finding out what happened and where our characters were heading. While this book is not the best written story ever I do see a lot of potential in the rest of the series and will be gladly continuing the series in hopes that it keeps getting better. When I first started Illusions I thought it was a Buffy knock-off the more I read, I was quickly and pleasantly surprised by the unique and original story line. As a Brisbane girl I also loved being able to recognise the locations. If I didn't have to go to work I would have finished this book in a day, I couldn't put it down. I love the characters and can't wait to see what is in store for Isolde and Liam. I was provided with a free advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
After seeing a promotion for this book on social media, I’ve been so friggin excited for the release! And then what do you know—- I got an arc and it made me silly with joy. I had no idea that this was a vampire novel. It was done really well, although the pace was somewhat slow around the middle(?). The fmc and mmc were great characters, although I wished I was able to see them develop more? Liam was SO swoony. I love these kind of tropes! Overall, a nice read and I can’t wait for more.

This was an excellent book. As a Brisbanite myself, I loved the thoughtful inclusions of iconic Brisbane locations. The romance was integral to the story but this is a paranormal fantasy, not just smut. I was SO MAD when characters I liked got killed off, but frankly, that's what this book does -it makes you emotionally attached. It was a ride. I'm a bit disappointed by how it ended or otherwise it would have been a 5 star book. The plot twist at the end was trite, I think, but I'm still really looking forward to the other books.
I loved this book! The first half was all world and character building but the last half was amazing. Living in Brisbane it was nice reading a urban fantasy based where I live. I can’t wait for book 2! Allison A Andrews beautifully captured brisbane city, and how daily life can be. Her characters were well rounded and I could really relate to the FMC while she was grieving, that feeling of being at the bottom of a well of who you really are. I would also love myself a partner like the MMC
I think this might actually be one of the best books I have read this year. Urban fantasy is not my favourite fantasy genre and I thought it might be weird for me being set in Brisbane which is where so live. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
I thought the plot was captivating and full of little twists and the cliff hanger at the end!!!!!!!!!!
The book itself was good, but unfortunately as much as I try I cannot get wholeheartedly into the fantasy genre. It took me so long to read because I was determined to see where it went but I had to psych up😂 The story is actually quite good and the slight slow burn did keep me engaged a little! Overall I think if you love fantasy you’d really get into this one!
Loved this! It was so fun to read a book based in the city that I live in, and seeing the little name places pop up the whole way through was great fun.
This was a really unique take on a well-loved trope of the 'chosen one' and vampires. I cried, I giggled, I wanted to shake some sense into the FMC on occasion, it was great! Can't wait or my besties to read this....
Isolde is the 7th daughter of a 7th daughter AND a 7th son and finds herself drawn into a world where the Order protects Humanity from vampires. How much will she have to sacrifice to become the person mentioned in a prophecy.
What? Just what? I read the winning ticket and thought "yeah this author is pretty cool". I was not expecting to have my heart ripped out twice in one book...
This was an amazing read. I totally binged this book so fast. Had me hooked and left on a cliffhanger so I had to grab the rest of the series to binge too. It was a wonderful story and the added Brisbane parts where great. Highly recommended.
This book hooked me from the start. I love how the midern Australian setting is set against ancient phrophercies concerning vamipires, chosen ones and loving the mixing of gemini and 7th daughter/son phrophesies
