Vladimiro Ariel Dorfman is an Argentine-Chilean novelist, playwright, essayist, academic, and human rights activist. A citizen of the United States since 2004, he has been a professor of literature and Latin American Studies at Duke University, in Durham, North Carolina since 1985.

«خب این کتاب هم که خیلی شبیه وضعیتیه که امروزه داریم تجربه‌ش می‌کنیم.»
احساس می‌کنم بسیاری از ما، با همین شکل معرفی فروشندۀ کتاب، ترغیب به خرید این کتاب شدیم. هرچند که وقتی کسی مدعی می‌شه تاریخی دیگر در جغرافیای دیگر، مشابه تاریخ امروز در جغرافیای ماست، باید بپرسیم این خداوند است که دیکتاتورهایش را مانند هم می‌سازد، یا این مردم هستند که مانند هم اشتباه می‌کنند؟

جلد کتاب، عکسی از لحظۀ تخریب مجسمۀ رضاشاه، اولین پادشاه حکومت پهلوی است. گاهی فکر می‌کنم شاید هنرمندان برای اینکه اجازۀ اعتراض داشته باشند، هرآنچه می‌خواهند به کسی بگویند را به کس دیگری حواله می‌کنند، به این امید که خواننده، مخاطب حقیقی را بفهمد. شاید هم انتخاب این تصویر تنها برای این باشد که تاریخ را یادآور شود. که بگوید آنچه که پیش آمده، باز هم می‌تواند برای شما پیش بیاید.
به هرحال، ما که از مخالفین حکومت آن بنده خدا بوده‌ایم، اما حتی خاک مجسمه‌اش شرف دارد به حکومت این بندگان لوسیفر.

یک ترجمه خوب، داستان‌ها رو به شدت تاثیرگذارتر می‌کنه.
و خوبی کتاب‌هایی از این دست اینه که اونقدر به عینه در ایران تجربه‌ش کردیم که با هر داستان با هر فقدان و ترس، تعلق، عشق و دلهره‌ای همراه با شخصیت‌های داستان می‌تونیم همراه بشیم.
این هم یک پیشنهاد خوب از دورفمن و داستان‌های کوتاه از سال‌های سرکوب و کشتار حکومت نظامی در شیلی.

Ariel Dorfman’s collection of stories, My House is on Fire (1990), is a hard-punching literary response to the brutality of Augusto Pinochet’s regime in Chile. Some of the stories are realistic portrayal of life under the regime’s lash (often literally). Others, like the title story, have the air of fables or dark fairy tales. Either way, these stories stand up well both as literature and protest. Dorfman always retains an interest in character, setting, and narrative structure that ensures lasting appeal, long after the Pinochet regime’s demise.

I particularly admire a story called “Reader” that examines the role of a censor who becomes wrapped up in a manuscript that he knows he must not let be published…but decides to do it anyway. Another story, “Consultation,” focuses on a doctor, who is being tortured and at the same time probed, half-seriously, for some medical advice of use to his lead torturer.

The fake news worlds of authoritarian regimes—where black is said to be white, facts are variable, laws are designed to oppress, not protect, and inconvenient truths are brushed under the rug—demand specialists in irony like Dorfman. And yet they also demand realists, again like Dorfman, who take time to dwell on the human consequences of governmental abuse. In “Family Circle,” the issue initially seems to be a father’s fury that his son has accepted his military service obligations but this argument gives way when the son, returning home for a weekend’s leave, realizes that his twin sister has become a prostitute to put bread on the family table. The Pinochet regime had little to no interest in Chile’s underclass; its interest was fully expended on itself.

it is dumbfounding to me that ariel dorfman is not more widely read. the eleven stories that make up my house is on fire are brief yet forceful forays into themes dorfman explores more fully in his lengthier works; tyranny, violence, distress, resistance, and hope unvanquished. a lurking disquiet permeates much of dorfman's storytelling and heightens the tension immeasurably, making for an often chilling read.

since they were going to kill him anyhow, since tomorrow they would tell his mother the same cock-and-bull story the colonel had already told her about the death of his two brothers, about how each of the prisoners, ma'am, had escaped with stretcher and everything, even though they were in chains, and how the guard, fully armed, had been forced to act in self-defense, and how the body, ma'am, had somehow managed to end up, hanging from a tree on the other side of the hill, ten kilometers from the hospital from which the escape attempt had been made; since his brothers were only two of the may who at nightfall found themselves arrested in one place and at dawn turned up dead someplace else, or who disappeared in front of their houses and later died on some deserted beach; since his captors intended to kill him anyway, theo knew what he had to do; scarcely had they tied his body, already blue from the cold and the bruises, to the stretcher and left him alone with his burned skin and broken ribs, than he decided to escape from there that very night.

من کتابی را به خاطر آشنایی با اشخاص نمی‌خرم. این اولین بار بود که به خاطر آشنایی با مترجم کتابی را خریدم. چون اطمینان داشتم آنچه که انتخاب کرده است مهم است. من از دورفمن چیزی نخواندم اما برایم صدایی بود شبیه یوسا البته مردمی‌تر و بدون آن کلیشه‌هایی که یوسا در «سور بز» به آن‌ها چنگ می‌زند. کتاب هم‌سو با من نبود. اما باید بگویم که صحنه‌ها و آدم‌ها و حوادث برای همین روزهای ما بود. برای این روزهایی که جان در بدنمان پر پر می‌زند. دورفمن نگاهی انسانی و هم‌سو با مردم دارد. وجهه‌ای سیاسی هم دارد اما وقتی این داستان‌ها را می‌خواندم «جماعت» اهمیت بیشتری داشت. بله، او هم در دل داستان‌ها می ‌خواهد صدای اعتراض خودش را بلند کند اما درگیر کلیشه و «جار زدن» نیست. روایتش را می‌گوید. و این چیزی است که اغلب در هنرمندان ما گم است و این وجهه‌ای بود که برای من جالب بود. ماجراها مدام تو را از داستان می‌کَند تا به روایت‌های شخصی‌تر خودت سرک بکشی. به آدم‌ها و شرایطی که در واقع با آن‌ها زندگی می‌کنی و عجیب بود که در وِر دیگری از دنیا هم آدم‌ها رنج می‌برند. شاید عین به عین مثل ما.

همیشه در انتخاب‌هایم از کتاب‌هایی که در وصفش نوشته‌اند «داستان سیاسی» یا مثلا «چقدر شبیه امروز ماست!» فرار کرده‌بودم. در ایران، به اندازه‌ی کافی در طول روز سیاست تمام زندگی را گرفته و دنیای داستان برایم راه فراری بوده که نمی‌خواستم سیاست را واردش کنم.
از طرفی، به نظرم تعریف‌هایی که از این داستان‌های سیاسی می‌کنند هم خیلی متاثر از همین نزدیک‌بودن شرایط و هم‌ذات‌پنداری ناخودآگاه با کاراکتری که سیاست دهنش را صاف کرده، است. انگار خواننده چشم‌هایش را روی درام ضعیف و شخصیت‌پردازی بسته باشد و صرفا شباهت فضا راضی‌اش کرده باشد.
نمی‌دانم تحت تاثیر یک‌سال اخیر، یا صرفا مقتضیات سن بود که یک روز یکهو دلم خواست داستان سیاسی را امتحان کنم. هنوز گاردم را داشتم و با داستان کوتاه شروع کردم که اگر وسطش پشیمان شدم، راحت‌تر ولش کنم.
این کتاب اما واقعا خوب بود. چفت و بست هر داستان درست بود. برای من که این سال‌ها انگار درام از همه چیز اهمیتش بیشتر شده و ادبیات و شاعرانگی را سریع پس می‌زنم، ریتم درست و توصیف‌های به‌جای نویسنده خیلی جذاب بود. داستان اول، بررس، و داستان چهارم به نظرم واقعا خفن بودند. هم جنس سوژه‌ای که داشتند و هم روندی که طی می‌شد.
نزدیک بودن فضا و اتفاقاتی که نویسنده ازش حرف می‌زد، واقعا اعتیاد‌آور بود. انگار با همان چند کلمه‌ی اول خودم را در شیلی و فضای اختناقی که حاکم بوده می‌دیدم. نیازی نبود نویسنده حرف خاصی بزند و نیازی هم نبود که من به قوه‌ی خیالم فشار بیاورم. کار خودش در می‌آمد. ترس، بدگمانی، فروپاشی و همزمان امید، تلاش و از خودگذشتگی.
نمی‌دانم چرا تا الان فرار کرده بودم. بعد از خواندنش، گوگل را باز می‌کنم، می‌نویسم «داستان سیاسی، دیکتاتوری، شبیه امروز ما» فکر کنم واقعا بهش معتاد شده‌ام.

پ.ن: ترجمه و ویرایش خیلی خوب بود. صفحه‌آرایی معمولی.

I've been curious to read a book by Dorfman and found this one in my favorite used book store. I was pleasantly surprised by the English translation from Spanish (it does help that Dorfman lives in the States and as such, is pretty fluent in English). I liked Family Circle, Reader, My House is on Fire and Putamadre among the short stories. I hope to read one of his novels next.

I recognize these stories aren't really meant for me. But I just felt like it took forever to read such a short collection. Mostly focusing on Central and South American politics the stories are unforgiving

It's really hard to rate collections of short stories, since they tend to vary in quality, and this collection is no different. There were some strong 4 star stories. Some mediocre 3 star stories. And possibly a couple of 2 star ones. But I think, overall, the book has to rest nicely on 3 stars.

There are some shocking and disturbing portrayals of the dictatorship in Argentina, but some of the stories did seem a little too 'abstract' to really have too much of an effect (Trademark Territory, Backlands).
