Opening with a battle scene, we meet Brant, Knight’s Captain and leader of a group sworn to protect the kingdom from harm. A large band of barbarians are gathered, the pitched battle is near an end when Brant spies a Mage, whipping up a magical blend of lightning and power to spur the barbarians in battle.
Although Brant succeeded in ending the battle and killing the mage, he has been mortally wounded, and the knights of his company rush him to a sanctuary house, built to serve the god Ison, the cloistered sisters within its walls dedicated to healing. Awakening to find a young sister, less her cowl, in his room, Brant is instantly struck by her beauty.
Gabrielle is fascinated by this man given into her care to heal. For magic has wounded him, and she, with her gifts, is the only one who can help. Attracted to his strength, his honor and his open assessment of her and more than a little curious about what happens with a man and woman, she skirts the bounds of propriety.
Cleverly wrought with clear differences between Brant and Gabrielle, her appreciation of her as a person despite the magic, and his needing to have a reason to retire from knightly duties the two are perfectly suited for a pairing. With a happily ever after and another steamy scene, the story manages to pack a punch with language and imagery, even in a short novella.
