In Your Arms Again

Their passion was stronger than ever...

Try as she might, Lady Octavia Vaux-Daventry cannot make herself fall in love with her groom-to-be. But a marriage to one of society's wealthiest noblemen will provide her a life so unlike her impoverished London childhood, and fulfill the promise she made to her grandfather so long ago. So it is more than inconvenient when the man who once possessed her heart bursts back into her world -- at the request of her betrothed -- and restarts a fire she thought was extinguished.

Having earned a reputation as society's favorite criminal investigator, former Bow Street Runner North Sheffield cannot believe Octavia is the woman he's been hired to protect. If anything, she is more desirable than the day they were forced to separate -- and even more unwilling to let the passion that still flares between them break the promises she must keep. But North is determined -- not only will he do anything to keep his lost love safe, but he will risk it all to get her back into his arms again.

2 Estrellas.

Introduction
In Your Arms Again was such a wonderful diversion of a read and honestly I do think that Kathryn Smith is so charming to read. If you are looking for endearing, fun, and adventurous, then you definitely need to pick this series up here. This was also another pick for my Romanceopoly reading challenge. I have been behind on it and working on catching up on it. In this one, it was the prompt for "Courtship Row" which is any book with a clinch cover and I would say that this cover makes the perfect clinch. I had such a fun sweet time reading this one, and it was so low angst in some ways, and higher angst in others as well. It also had the type of love triangle that I actually enjoy and had a HEA for all parties involved. If you want to get away from those modern historical's, then I would recommend this one, it was just FUN reading it and easy to relax into.

Summary
The setup of the story, is that our hero, North, is a Bow Street Runner, and has made his services to the Ton for quite some time in being able to solve mysteries and bring justice to those harming those in the upper classes. But he has kept himself apart from the one woman he has always loved but is determined to let her live her life as she deserves. Octavia made a promise to her grandfather before he died that she would marry the man that he wanted her to be with and so now she is engaged. Even though she doesn't love him, there is a level of respect or cordial affection between them. When there are letters arriving to her home, her fiancee hires North to get to the bottom of it just in case her life ends up in danger. As Octavia and North work together, their friendship and more builds between them. But there are vows that were made and now they will need to determine if their love is worth fighting for or resign themselves to letting each other go for duty and past promises...

My Outlook
In Your Arms Again was such a delightful read. I actually found myself so endeared by this story. I was easily drawn into it. Now I will say that the middle sometimes would move a bit slow, but overall the story itself had steady pacing. I really fell hard for North and Octavia. This was such a sweet romance. And no I don't mean closed door, not at all, it has some decent steam to it, although its light in comparison to what many authors write today. There is such a sense of adventure to this story that I really enjoyed. This aspect is what I feel is missing in modern historical's these days. Kathryn Smith really delivered on building such an entertaining plot. I absolutely adored the friends to lovers trope in this one. You see how much they care for each other but haven't had a true chance to see what they can be together without family interference and now they are free to explore what could have been and it was so precious to see this grow between them. I honestly didn't understand though their need to not be together ...together. Like other than North's brothers, their family's are mostly gone and those that didn't want them to be together aren't around, so I felt a bit frustrated at times with how stubborn they both were in this regard. But the ending was satisfying and left me with a smile on my face!

Overall View
In Your Arms Again is a satisfying, witty, well penned historical that will deliver the heart and adventure any historical romance lover is seeking...

Octavia and North were best friends as kids and for one night, lovers. Then, she was absorbed into the world of the ton, while North, a bastard, was shunned. Still, he made his way as an investigator. When Octavia, who is engaged, begins receiving threatening letters, her fiancee hires North to find the guy. And they are forced together again while having to pretend they have no past together and face the fact that they have no future as well.

I felt like I was being bashed in the head with the fact that Octavia had made promises that she simply couldn't break and that when they were younger, Octavia had given North her virginity. It's mentioned constantly and then again because I might have forgotten since last chapter.

And he heroine is really a selfish bitch. It's supposed o be a virtue that she used to take what she wanted when she wanted it - but she's selfish about it. She actually sounds spoiled most of the time, even saying, "I want to do what I want. I want to have my own way. Give me my own way!" That sounds like a toddler throwing a tantrum to me. Not a mature woman. She spends a good portion of the book telling herself she wants North bound to her, to never forget her...she's seeking a physical relationship with him. All the while, she has every intention of going through with her marriage with someone else. Not once does she consider North's feelings. And she's really quite bitchy to two people who are nothing but nice to her throughout the book. At about 63% through the book, I added deceitful to her list of character traits. She'd already decided to pretend she was a virgin when she married her fiancee, but then she decided he had no reason to know she'd been sleeping with the hero right before her marriage. Not an admirable heroine - at all.

And in all honesty, I cannot believe their plight. She made two promises to people who are dead, but she is so in love with this other guy. Despite everyone telling her (and her telling herself) that those promises don't mean anything, she refuses to give up on them. She's needlessly stubborn. And yes, both the heroine and the hero are emotional cowards.

This is the tangled love story of two insecure people. I found the story compelling enough to finish reading, although I rolled my eyes toward heaven about every-other chapter.

The hero is a lord's bastard, raised in Covant Garden until his mother died. Then he was raised by his father, with his legitimate brothers. When he tried to enter society, he was shunned due to his bastard status. So he made a name for himself as a Bow Street Runner and then on his own as a private investigator, helping the very people who shunned him.

The heroine is the legitimate granddaughter of a lord who spent her childhood in Covant Garden. When her mother died, her grandfather claimed her. She made deathbed promises to her mother and grandfather about her future that she intends to keep - to live her life as a lady and to marry her grandfather's heir.

The H/h haven't seen each other in twelve years. As youngsters they were best friends and then lovers, a secret history they don't dare share with society.

So when the hero comes back into the heroine's life to solve a case of anonymous love letters, they have to pretend they don't know each other. And yet their stalled romance springs to life.

The plot is good and the characters likable, but their internal dialogue made me roll my eyes. They run over all the reasons why they can't be together about once a chapter. The repetition drove me bonkers. And then there was the constant wobbling in their decision making (felt like forced internal conflict for the sake of dramatization).

I'm used to characters full of self confidence who reach out and grab what they want and to heck with the consequences.

Both confessed they are cowards at heart, afraid to grab what they want and be forced to face the consequences, even though the solution to their happily ever after was in reach if only they would open their minds and hearts to the possibility.

I believe this is the first book I've read from this author, so I'll try another story since I was entertained and that is the main purpose of reading...

He de admitirlo.

Absolutamente recomendable.

Ok, I wanted to love it, as it featured my favorite romance, childhood friends to happily ever after, but it just never fully engaged me, the conflict especially felt forced. I want to read Brahm’s story so I’m still interested enough in the series.

I'm always asking mentally for an author to take me on an unexpected journey and Kathryn Smith answered my silent plea.
Low-born and illegitimate children of titled fathers, Vie and Norrie were childhood friends and one-time lovers, and each others firsts.
One day Octavia's grandfather came and "rescued" her, and she reluctantly left North behind. Now at thirty, Vie is a lady of the Ton, an heiress, and on the verge of fulfilling her grandfather's dying wish to marry her titled cousin. North on the other hand was pressed into his father's at first unwelcoming family, and wordlessly reminded of his station in life. We find out North worked as a Bow Street runner– now a private investigator with a conscience– and is dancing on the fringe of polite society, ferreting out and hiding the secrets of the Ton. Through the years he has cautiously developed relationships with his half-brothers and is particularly close to one, who wants North to consider a career in politics.
After twelve years, Vie and North are forced together as North is hired by Vie's supposed fiancé to protect Vie from a stalker. Bittersweet to watch unfold is the silent yearnings for the other.
What I found so different and remarkable were their personalities.
Octavia suppressed her natural joie de vivre to become the ‘lady’ her grandfather wanted. In doing so she struggles against her nature and falls into non-effacing, admittedly terse, occasionally rude, and cranky behavior. In addition, she hates how easily she controls her supposed fiancé.
North is such a dichotomy. He not the usual alpha hero you’d expect, coming on all macho. At first I thought he was irresolute and possibly sentimental, only to discover how truly strong. It’s a quiet, silent strength. And the love he has for Vie is so deep and steadfast, defying the years.
In each others company, these two touch, laugh, recall the earlier days, and come alive. It’s like they are transported to the past and they are once again the young lovers, free to be themselves. I especially love how he understands and values the heroine by giving her the opportunity to shed her society mask and spread her wings.
But in my opinion, the stalker/blackmailer/killer conflict seemed an unnecessary distraction to what should have been a character-driven story, therefore my 4* rating. I especially like that Smith doesn't cop-out and out-of-the-blue makes North suddenly secretly legitimate and titled. She even went so far as to define their future life as a tough likelihood.
In the end, what is important to me is how I will preserve a soft spot for this book and these two in my reading history.

In Your Arms Again was an improvement over the first two books in the series. I thought it started out pretty strong, but got bogged down in the middle with the same old recycled dialogue and thoughts between the hero and heroine. I did start to skim some of the smex scenes, as it wasn't really adding to the story. 3/5 stars

This is part of a series, which I didn't realize when I bought it. But it is most certainly a stand-alone book. It wasn't that memorable a story, but it was a very enjoyable read. Love apparently lasts for all time.

This is one of my older books I love to read (published 2004). I do like this story, but it's not my fave of the Ryland Brothers series. It's quite a good read, with a good plot and characters, but I don't very much like Vie, the heroine. Enjoyable read.
