A detailed survey which examines the major developments in English society during this period of social crises, population decline, agarian unrest, the introduction to enclosures - and political tensions particularly over succession.
Dry but worthy. I consider this essential reading if you really want to dive deeper into the Late Middle Ages and are looking for a proper scholarly book.
First, I will point out that I read this book as a recommended text for a module on the England of Lancaster and York that I am studying at university.
That being said, Thomson provides a good read that covers not just the main political events but also studies 'from below' looking at the social and cultural situation. The book is broken down into very short chapters which is a blessing as otherwise it could become very dry in what is a fascinating period of history. The book does give information on events but this is broken up by studies on the economy, geography, government structure and church at the time to provide a contextual basis for an understanding behind the events which unfold.
If you are new to this time period, this provides a good framework however, for those less scholarly, I would recommend starting with a different text as this one is highly academic and not designed for a popular audience.
