A short story with real heart, MAGGIE is set in a small farming community in Western Australia.
'A symbol of love and compassion,’ he whispered, pressing the cool stone into her hot hand, a hand wet with tears brushed from her face. She blinked and gazed at her pale palm. The dark object resting there floated into view through the watery haze across her eyes. It was a garnet, and not just any garnet. It was her garnet. The gift from him, to keep forever. The gift she’d lost, but which had somehow found its way back to her, the way Mal never had....
Despite living within cooee of the Great Barrier Reef, idyllic tropical islands, and a well-stocked ocean pantry, author Alicia Hope is a self-confessed landlubber and disliker of seafood (I know - what the heck, right?!). She’s also a keen horse rider, bass player, and bird watcher, and shares her gumtree-dotted acreage home with author husband Frank H Jordan, their feathered larrikin, cockatiel Kewbie Kewberton, and a whole bunch of wild birds, roos, goannas, and pretty-face wallabies. Her feel-good stories showcase Alicia’s love of the land and the natural world, and this is especially true of the books in her LONG ROAD series.
Anyone who has travelled Australia by road knows to prepare for looong trips, with a high probability of obstacles and roadblocks being encountered along the way. So it’s no surprise the heroines in Alicia’s stories discover that the road to happiness can also be long, potholed, and downright challenging. But these gutsy Aussie gals are up for whatever challenges come their way!

Maggie had me from the very beginning. Being a born and bred Western Australian, who has spent many, many years in outback towns, I thoroughly enjoy various authors takes on our amazing state. Alicia did not disappoint, although the story only lightly touched on the countryside. The lead character, unnamed for much of the story, was a quintessential rural Australian. She is strong, but only to a certain extent. Moved by life's up and downs, our heroine struggles with her emotions. However, she comes through the other side, to see things in a different light. I loved the twists and turns throughout the story, with more than a few unexpected moments. What else can I say but "I want more!"
Thank you to Goodreads and Alicia Hope for the chance to win 'Maggie'

Maggie follows one woman’s quest to find compassion and love with the help of garnet stone. It is a poignant short story, which manages to successfully cover such themes as heartbreak, loss, abandonment, depression and healing all set in the backdrop of country Western Australia. Beautifully written, the strength of this short story is the immediate emotional connection I felt with the main character. It kept me on edge from beginning to end as I followed her journey, albeit with a few twists. It did however leave me wanting more from this story, I would love to have seen it as a 200+ word novel, as it had the makings to work successfully as a longer text. It also left me questioning the healing power of stones such as the garnet.
I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this from author as a Goodreads giveaway.
Whilst the book/story is only 21 pages it is a wonderfully evocative read and, whilst I don't live on a farm, I do enjoy my daily interaction with the wild birds (including magpies) that visit my backyard so felt a special connection to the story.
A lovely little story that reminds us that a writer doesn't need hundred of pages and a book the size of a doorstop to capture the essence of a story or the imagination of readers ... as Alicia writes in her dedication, this is a story for those who "love short stories'.
***I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway*** NO SPOILERS! This book was definitely captivating and I was really engrossed in this book ever since I read this blurb. The premises of this book is really good and the issues presented through this book is very realistic and relatable for country people/ folks. I highly recommend this book for a quick, fun, interesting book. I really wish this book was longer and was actually made into a 200+ page book. Overall, I was really pleased with this book and Hope's writing style is very unique & sophisticated. I loved this stand-alone short story!
