In 2011, Nancy Shaffer's life suddenly changed when she was diagnosed with a fatal brain tumor.
Here is her heartrending and heartwarming account of her final year as she came to terms with impending death. Part journal, part reflection, and fully honest, Shaffer's account of her journey through denial to peaceful acceptance will lend inspiration and courage to those in need, and insight to those who give pastoral care.
A stunning and brutally honest account of the last year of life while she battled a cancerous brain tumor. The challenges of health balanced against her spiritual and physical quest - so well portrayed.
A lovely and inspiring book. I really enjoyed knowing more about Nancy's thoughts and reaction to her illness. How generous of her to capture her journey in such an honest way. This gave me a lot to think about, I was proud to hear of how kind and generous her health care providers were. I was also so impressed at how Nancy kept coming back to gratitude and love. So reassuring, I cannot begin to imagine what she went through physically, let alone spiritually.
I was surprised to read the chapter on the vine and fig tree song. I am the person who made that card for Nancy. It was so wonderful to hear of her reaction to it and to know that she was so comforted and inspired by it. She did send me a thank you note at the time, so it was like getting an extra visit from her to read this chapter.
Lovingly edited, this volume follows Nancy Shaffer from diagnosis to her death, through her poetry and notes. Like Nancy's other spiritual works, there are luminous moments deeply connected to and growing out of the mundane. This is a fine book to include in an adult religious education study on ideal of a good death.
