Luke is in his last year of high school, volunteering at the local nursing home and helps out at his dad’s church on Sundays. He also hasn’t told anyone he’s gay.

As his feelings for Jamie grow, Luke will have to figure out how the different pieces of his life fit together. What does this mean for his friendships when his best friend seems to be falling for the same guy? His family, who he could never tell in a million years? And his faith, which has always seemed so sure?

Colours is an in-depth look at the subject of LGBT and the church in an age where we can no longer simply stick our heads in the sand and keep the divide between Christianity, the church, and gay Christians.

Colours is a brilliantly written novel about love, faith, and the difficulties of life. Written in a way that kept the book stuck in my hands, and the words spiralling in my mind. This is a story that will make you laugh, and at times cry.

This story encounters loveable teenage characters figuring out how to have friends, family, and beliefs that may or may not go against everything they have always thought.

I absolutely adored Guthrie’s portrayal of the elderly in our community, particularly the impact their life stories have! Not only that, but how important truly listening is, no matter who it is.

Guthrie produces a book with the desire to pastor young people in the faith, rather than to preach the faith. It makes for a highly-relational book that shows God in the confusion of teenhood. The book gave me a clear emphasis on the conversation of sexuality and Christianity - maybe 'yes or no' is not as important as "starting with Jesus, and going from there."

Colours is the sort of book I wish I'd had in high school. It brings the LGBT community and church into the same story and explores how they can interact with each other, encouraging young people to explore their faith and their identity together.

Colours is the most influential and spiritually fulfilling book about homosexuality available.
