Rick Lasky and John Salka are two of the most dynamic and inspirational leaders in the fire service. Their book, Five Alarm Leadership, is a compilation of leadership lessons learned, situations handled, decisions made, and problems solved during their combined 60-plus years of fire service experience. Also included is a special introduction by Chief (ret.) Bobby Halton, Editor-in-Chief of Fire Engineering magazine, outlining the nature of transformational leadership and its power to inspire excellence in the fire service.
One of the better leadership books out there. This one gives steps and directions on how to succeed, rather than just telling you what you should be doing. These two authors give real life experiences that most of us in the fire service can relate to and understand. Great authors that simplify words and make it easy and quick to read as well. Great book. Not quite 5 stars, but definitely more than 4. 4.75 maybe?
Overall a pretty good fire service leadership book from two fire service giants in Chief Salka and Chief Laskey. It is leadership lessons that people should be reading as firefighters though not Officers. They need to learn the concepts earlier in their career. And a few fire chiefs need to read it and remember the troops are number one and remember who they should be supporting.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It has just the right amount of personal stories to back up/support what each is trying to get across. I have underscored a lot in this book. I would very much recommend this to any leader or anyone aspiring to be a leader, whether in the fire service or in some aspect of your life.
