In the interest of full disclosure, I know the author as we are members of the same professional organization. However, I can easily recommend this book to those in search of an inspirational and uplifting story of meeting a challenge and overcoming it. Overcoming a challenge doesn't always mean to "beat" it, and in this case, the author met the challenge, took it on and integrated it's most important lessons to her every day living.

June Hyjek dealt with scoliosis for most of her life and the resulting treatments and surgeries. In this book she details, through narrative and e-mail exchanges, the path that one surgery in particular took her on. In an effort to surround herself with the support in order to heal, Hyjek contacts a circle of friend via e-mail and asks for positive thoughts and energy for her upcoming operation. What happens after that is a year long transformation--not only of Hyjek's health, but her understanding of healing as well; she begins as a patient and ends up as a teacher. The transformation of both is remarkable to witness. The teaching role appears to be one that she is comfortable in, coming from a background of physical training and mentoring. Although she continues to be grateful for her friends' words of support, comfort and encouragement, throughout the book her message to others becomes stronger and more organized. Healing from a wound is not just physical, but emotional, mental and spiritual.

This book is easy to read because it is positive and comforting. But one of the real values of Hyjek's writing is that she is able to infuse humor in even the darkest moments. Her writing style is comfortable and intelligent and her message is clear. I will recommend this book to friends and colleagues alike. You should read it, too.

Unexpected Grace: A Discovery of Healing Through Surrender was such a beautifully written and rewarding read. June Hyjek shares a very personal story of her journey through several surgeries, the outcome of each, and the harsh realities of a debilitating condition. I love her technique of sharing emails written in the past and reflecting on them in the present. She demonstrates an amazing perspective and an incredible sense of humor as she confronts challenges thrown at her, every step of the way. I laughed out loud in a couple parts when the unexpected happened and she put a humorous spin on the situation, taking it all in stride. Unexpected Grace is also an inspirational page turner. All readers will find something within the pages that will speak to them. It caused me to stop from time to time and reflect on my own life and how I handle the challenges that come my way. I look forward to June’s next book, no matter what the topic is, fiction or non-fiction.
