X-Men: Storm

Rate this book
Long ago, Storm won leadership of the underground mutant community known as the Morlocks. But her reign was a distant one, and Storm's neglected subjects grew increasingly embittered. Ultimately, the mad Mikhail Rasputin swept the Morlocks away into another dimension - a harsh dimension where time ran much faster than normal. There, the next generation of Morlock children came of age, hard and cold and bitter. They returned as a terrorist unit called Gene Nation, and Storm nearly had to slay their leader to defeat them. Disturbed by her actions, haunted by the guilt of failing the Morlocks, Storm seeks a new balance in her life. But when she is abducted to Mikhail's brutal dimension, can Storm prevail against the living reminders of her failure? Or will the sins of her past drag her down? COLLECTING: Storm (1996) 1-4

This Storm comic seems to rely on other events surrounding it, and certainly expects you to be up to speed on who everyone is -- at least in the first issue. It actually gets a bit more explanatory later on in the volume, which confused and then began to ignore me.

Since my exposure to X-men previously has just been brief crossovers with other comics and a huge childhood obsession with an animated TV series, it's fair to say I come into this pretty new. I liked the Storm portrayed here: struggling with past bad decisions, trying to feel her way into being a true leader, and not completely sanitised. She chooses not to kill at several points, but that's because she knows what it's like to use lethal force; it's a real choice, not just idealism.

All in all, I can't rate this that highly because there's so little here, but I think there's a current solo Storm comic, and I'm thinking of picking that up. There isn't enough here to let Storm shine, and the comic seems pretty dated in the way it tells its story now, but it does hint at compelling and interesting aspects of Storm's character.

Well, this one is better than most graphic novels and with a character like Storm it had better be. She is one of the most interesting characters in the X-Men, past or present. And she's had more costumes and hair styles than any model.

I liked the story. Not the greatest but I'd say above average.

I liked the cover, she looks fab. I liked the artwork, it makes her look as beautiful as she should be, but I've seen her drawn better. In fact, at the end of the comic is a bio of her and some of drawings of her showing her off at her most impressive. I think I liked the art by Art Adams and Olivier Coipel best. It's hard to beat Art Adams. He makes everyone look their best. :-) Oh, and there's some drawings and info about Calliston, Cable and the Morlocks too.

The back of the graphic novel says that brand new it's $20. That's pretty steep. I don't think I'd pay that for any graphic novel unless it was more substantial. I would say I'd pay maybe half that if I had the money to burn. Honestly, those pics in the back are worth it. I just wish they were bigger.

A good story but since the story is from books published back in 1996 not only do I not remember the story frankly I'm not sure if it is still official anymore. The story also assumes you are current with the surrounding stories in the X-Men, X-Factor and other x-books of the era. Overall the story was good but I felt no attachment to the story. Which makes me kind of sad as Storm is normally such an interesting character to follow.

This is pure shit.

Terrible writing. Awkward dialogue that feels like it was written by a child. A ridiculous story. 4 issues worth of story felt like it took forever. None of the characters seemed true to themselves.

The art was cool though.

Skip it.

There are some fun bits in this story: Storm solo dealing with her own reflections of long term consequences for short term decisions; a hill representing a physical manifestation of Darwinism and survival of the fittest; and the on-going soap opera of X-Men, Morlocks, and several side characters.

However, the writing is just average, and the art is really not great. But another brick is placed in the in-going drama of the X-Men.

The covers to this series are beautiful but the story, while interesting, just really doesnt seem to suit Storm. I guess if you were reading it when it came out, or in conjunction with the main X-Men books, it might read a lot better as there would be a lot more context and background to things.
Still Ellis always has good ideas and Dodson is a great artist even this early in his career

Two stars is probably harsh, but this is such a nothing story, and written in such a juvenile fashion that I can’t even give it my middle of the road three stars.

Just an extended subplot of a mainline X-Men story with nice splash pages of Storm. A forgettable entry in the mythology of an amazing character.

As a Storm obsessee (probably not a word), I am so disappointed in this book. The story was OK but the artwork was atrocious. It was nice to see some familiar faces including Wolverine, Cyclops and Jean. I will say that since this was a limited series there are some comics I should read before these events here take place. This story has part of the Gene Nation story line so I should have refreshed my memory. The best part of this book was the bios in the back of the book of Storm, Cable and Callisto.

Good news is that I am looking forward to reading the Storm standalone series that came out in 2014. I think Vol 1 in book form came out in March. Just waiting for my library to get it.

The photos were great since with comics or graphic novels, you want the photos to speak or to be with great detail and artwork; to be spectacular, alerting, colorful, and scream at you. The storyline started off a bit weak for my liking and then got a tad bit confusing around book or story 2 but once I got to the last couple of stories--it become clearer and worth reading. Storm is one of my favorite comic Marvel-like characters, and these stories speckled on her past life and background.

In the last few pages, gives background of familiar characters from X-Men comics and related ones. I was able to learn more about Storm than I knew in the past, as well as Cable.

Two and a half.
I feel like in the first third it really seemed like this could have been a good comic but then in the latter half something goes seriously wrong. I don't like what they do with the Morlocks here. This also commits the sin of referring to locations in Africa by continent without specifying a country, which is a shame considering that most Storm stories I've read that were written back in the 70s and 80s could be more specific, so that's a step backwards.

First X-men comic ever and I should have picked a less confusing one to start it off.

The text was a bit like badly written fanfiction, so that was entertaining.

Storm herself was the bright shining star in the whole thing. I love her character and struggle, not to mention the amazing art and design. The costumes are laughable in how revealing and tight they are to her. She does have real power, real motivation, and real impact.

4 out of 5, will pick up other issues.

Storm has always been one of the more interesting X-Men. Her ability to control weather gives her some fascinating story arcs. What this story, reveals, however, is that her
Background as an orphan and pickpocket has created immense self-doubt. Like a lot of her fellow X-Men, this is one woman whose superpowers are only exceeded by an excessive dose of humanity.

I really give this a 2.5 - 2.75. It's a quick read. Nothing special honestly. The storyline is fair. Not bad, just not stand out. It really doesn't do Storm justice but I did really like the art.

I really like stories that show Storm dark side. She's gorgeous here and not taking anyone's shit
