Hunted Warrior

Rate this book
Demonic gladiators, ruthless mafia villains, and a race on the brink of distinction: What will become of them? One proud leader wields his power to unlock dark mysteries in the third in this fierce, sensual new paranormal romance series.

When the head of the Five Clans of the Dragon Kings wants something, he gets it. Raised among the most privileged of his dying race, Malnefoley conceals a devastating tragedy from his youth. Now, many call him the Usurper because of his unconventional rise to power. His influence is waning while the Dragon Kings must solve the puzzle of their slow extinction. So when a particularly important captive escapes his compound in the Greek mountains, Malnefoley leaves nothing to chance. She is his prisoner to retrieve.

The woman is known as the Pet, a former associate of a sadistic doctor from the Asters, a human crime cartel. Her loyalties cannot be trusted, even when she claims to hold the secret to conception—an invaluable secret for a race unable to procreate. Neither can her unique gift from the Great Dragon be believed. She’s a soothsayer, able to see glimpses of the future. Her quest is to find and save a Cage warrior on the verge of her first match—a young woman whose destiny is bound to a timeless prophecy.

Malnefoley has no respect for the ancient superstitions that brought about his childhood trauma. His only goal is to return the Pet to his compound and use her knowledge for the betterment of their people. Yet her restless energy and raw sensuality are as intriguing as her predictions about the rise of the Great Dragon. He dares not trust the crafty fugitive’s loyalties, but as their treacherous chase turns passionate, can he even trust himself?

As leader of the Dragon Kings, Malnefoley must solve the puzzle of their slow extinction but first he’ll have to decide if he can trust the woman known as the Pet in this mesmerizing paranormal romance.

Having faith and believing is one of the hardest things to do when life destroys your every belief but one woman has hope, has that belief but convincing Mal of that will take a lot of hard work and the reader can’t help but get caught up in their romance as they set out to save their race. The attraction between Mal and Pet smolders into a fiery passion during their quest but the relationship will have to overcome numerous obstacles and the emotional turmoil that arises from the situation and issues from the past grips the heart with a tight fist. The steady to fast paced and smooth flowing plot keeps readers hovering on the edge of expectation throughout the story with lots of suspense and passion.

Suspense and excitement build continuously as Pet uses her soothsayer abilities to lead Mal on the quest to stop the cage fighting and free their people but there are those who are out to stop him which adds lots of danger and unexpected surprises along the way. The scenes and details are well written and paint vivid images of this fascinating world while the well planned events ensure that the readers continue to turn the pages until the very end.

Enthralling with strong vibrant characters that demand attention is the only way that I can describe this story. I was completely captivated from the very beginning and I was as awestruck as the characters during the thrilling conclusion…WOW, I didn’t see that coming and I can’t wait to find out what happens next. I have to say that the story could be read all by its lonesome self but you would probably feel as if you were missing something so it is my recommendation that the series be read in sequence.

My review and an extended sample of the audiobook are posted at Hotlistens.com.

I've been a huge fan of the Dragon King series since I picked up book one back in 2013. I will admit that I was surprised when I first started to read this series. With a series title called "Dragon Kings", I was expecting dragons, and there were none. At first, I was disappointed and was trying to figure out when the dragons would appear. Then I got so engrossed in the story of the characters, that I completely forgot about the lack of dragons.

The world that Ms Piper has built here is fabulous. It is also dark and gritty. Dragons are a deity that is worshiped. Dragon Kings are their worshipers that are in one of five factions. Each faction has a different superhuman ability. Some have super speed and strength, others have mind powers, etc. In Hunted Warrior, we have Malnefoley, who is the leader of the all five factions, a king if you will. He is charged with finding out why the Dragon Kings are having such difficulty reproducing.

There is also a woman known only as The Pet. She has been the plaything of a sadistic doctor. She is a psychic and able to see the future. She was used to help in reproduction of the Dragon Kings.

There is a lot of excitement and suspense as Mal and The Pet are on a mission to stop the cage fighting that are killing off Dragon Kings. Mal is not a fan of many of the traditions of his past and of his people. The sex is well written, if not always timely. This book reads like the end of the series (though there is another novella coming out). While I thought this Hunted Warrior was slow to start, it does end with a bang. I was very happy with how it all ended.

Narration
This book was narrated by Jim Frangione, which is a change of narrator for this series. I don't know why the change in narrator. I've never listened to the previous narrator. This is the first one that I've listened to. I had always read the previous books and didn't even know that these were available on audio until I saw this on the list for review. I'm a big fan of Jim Frangione, from listening to the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. He does just as good of a job with this series. It is everything you would expect from him, if you've listened before. His men's voices are very alpha and sexy. His women's voices are a little overly feminine, but that has never bothered me. I think is his fight scenes and sex scenes are very passionate. I've always liked his pacing. He is a narrator that I'm always willing to listen to.

I like to thank Recorded Books for providing me with a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

I jumped into this book without having read the previous two in this series and what I found was an exciting and action-packed story. There are series where it is nearly impossible to jump in half-way and be able to follow the storylines, I was stoked that this wasn’t one of those. I’m sure I am missing some background but I felt that the story gave you enough detail to follow the Pet’s story arc without any huge question marks. The Pet is such a brave and strong-willed character, which was surprising knowing she had been someone’s puppet for years. She is beautiful and an amazing warrior with a unique gift. How must it have been for her to glimpse her and Malnefoley in the throes of passion and having no clue how they would get there? She knows he despises her for her involvement with assisting the Asters. Barely knowing someone and glimpsing such passion would definitely shock me to the core. Malnefoley’s powers are something like Storm from the X-Men he can call electricity to him from nearby friction or from just rubbing pieces of clothing together. The scenes where he shows us his power were incredible.

I have not read anything by Lindsey Piper (also known as Carrie Lofty) before, but let me tell you her writing is fantastic. This world she has built is intense and detailed and these characters are profound and captivating. I was in love with the Pet from the start, and once I got to know Malnefoley and his inner thoughts I couldn’t help but be drawn to him. If you are looking for an intense, action-heavy, paranormal story, you need to pick this one up. I can’t speak to the whole series so far but this one alone was so entertaining. What I also loved about this story is that yes, there is a romance but there is so many other things going on that it only intensifies the rest of the story. It doesn’t feel like just a romance, it is so much more than that but I will say the “sexy times” are definitely electric (both figuratively and literally)!!! If you like paranormal stories with intense romance and action, I definitely recommend this one!

Not as atmospheric as the previous 2.5 books. Still it's intriguing and the "Dragon" finally showed up. I didn't connect much with the MCs here, I liked the tension at first but it developed too quickly. Next thing you know they're having sex in a crypt in the middle of a reconnaissance mission. The last third was great, packed with action and former MCs made appearances.

I won Hunted Warrior Book 3 from Goodreads for an honest review. I wish I read books 1 and 2 first. Still good as a stand alone book. No spoilers here.

The Pet is now Avyi. The Giva is now Mal.

Avyi and Mal find the golden arrows and bow for Cadmin.

Silence is Orla and turns out to be Avyi's sister.

Dragons exist.

A woman simply known as an evil man's Pet sets out on a quest dictated by the foretellings of the future she receives and she is joined by the ruler of all the Dragon Kings, her would-be captor that she must convince to become what he was born to be even if others whisper that he is The Usurper.

This is the third book in the Dragon Kings series and a bit something different from the two that preceded it from what I gather. Actually, I'm just guessing at that based on my observations as I dived into this last installment having never read the previous books. Considering I probably missed a great deal, I actually found this one stood on its own pretty well. I didn't have the lost feeling and it had a pretty strong story and romance arc on its own in this exciting enemies to lovers tale.

The woman known as Pet is the catalyst for this adventure. She has been held captive by Malnefoley the Dragon King Giva because of who her previous master was and what she knows about the illusive secret of Dragon King conception. Mal can't get any answers out of her, but now she has escaped and is set on retrieving some ancient artifacts that must be delivered into the hands of a certain cage fighter to fulfill an important prophecy. Mal has no idea what to do with this unpredictable, mysterious creature that both angers and entices him. He can't trust her, but somehow he needs to see if all the stuff she predicted comes true especially since she's tied in with the threats on his life.

Allowing the Giva close and making him her quest partner is a huge act of trust for her, but she has seen how Mal is directly tied to her and they have a future together. He is suspicious and hostile and dark which she must never forget, but there is also something surprising in him that gives her hope as they work and survive together.

The story begins on an exciting suspenseful note and then backs off on the action to work on the development of the relationship and characters only to bring it all home in an intense, emotional hard fought surprising end. I loved the ebb and flow of this one and really liked being along for it all as the two characters took turns narrating the story. They come from very different places in their pasts and even the journey they are on together is not one that instantly brings them together. I liked how the author balanced that aspect of trust/don't trust on a knife's edge even while teasing out the attraction growing between them. And boy does that attraction sizzle.

For the most part, the story focuses on the volatile pair of Mal and Avyi, but late in the story familiar characters from the previous stories enter in and do their parts. There will probably be a few really nice surprises for those who have been following the series. And I am so excited about the one big reveal at the end that I have to keep mum about since its a spoiler. Cool series twist there.

All in all, I really enjoyed this one and now I want to go back for what I missed. I would say this is for those who like their paranormal romance on the gritty, spicy side with some cunning worldbuilding and plotting.

My thanks to the author for providing the book in exchange for an honest review.

My Review:
I received this book for review and had not read the first two books in the series. As a result, I went into it with no knowledge of this world. And it is possible to do that, but I was confused about several details of the world, so when I was about midway through the book, I went and grabbed Book #1 in hopes of clearing some of that up. It didn't work...LOL. There's a lot about this world that just seems like it's vague. And now after having read book #1, I just think that's the way the series is written. And yes, if you're wondering, this book DOES work as a stand-alone.

This book is about Mal, he's the leader of the Dragon Kings. The Pet has been his prisoner for 6 months (since the end of book #1), but at the beginning of this book, he's chasing her down...alone. See, the Pet is a soothsayer. She sees the future, but just in bits and pieces. She's also spent her entire life viewed as a thing...a pet...so she has a few odd ways about her. At the beginning of the book, she's difficult to understand. She talks in riddles a lot simply because she is only seeing bits and pieces of the future. She never has the full picture and she also needs Mal to cooperate with her so she just gives him bits of the story.

The Pet's transformation into a real person was heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. She's had a horrible history, but it also just is. She doesn't question it. She's like this grand philosopher and this whole book has a philosophical feel to it. Fate vs. choice. Can we influence or change what's meant to be? If not, then why even try. In that aspect, the book got to be a bit heavy-handed. I understand Mal's issues with it, especially in light of his own history, but I got tired of the constant debate from him over the facts of fate.

But despite that, I LOVED Avyi and Mal. They each brought so much humanity that they've lost out on in the other. Their quest (and it is definitely a quest as the two of them follow her predictions) was action filled and kept me riveted throughout. I loved them together and thought they made a magnificent team...so much better together than apart. I enjoyed seeing past characters and wow...that twist with Silence was brilliant and took me COMPLETELY by surprise...but I loved it.

I will admit the final climactic scenes felt a little over the top to me. It made sense in the overall arc of the series story line and what it's been building to, but it seems like there should have been a prophesy or something brought up before the very end so that it wasn't so out of the blue. It just seemed too extreme of an occurrence, but I will admit that it worked for pure shock value.

Also, I think this is the final book in the series, but it didn't feel like it. Nothing was solved in the overall arc about the Dragon Kings conception issues. I needed more answers there to be fully satisfied with this being the end. I'm hoping that there are still more to come. The end set it up so there could be some amazing stories to come. It definitely felt like a new beginning.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

In ‘Hunted Warrior’ we meet Malnefoley, the head of the Five Clans of the Dragon Kings. (But I’ve read you get to meet him earlier in the first two books!) Malnefoley is used to getting what he wants, so when a prisoner escapes from his compound in the Greek mountains, he doesn’t feel like he has a choice but trying to get the prisoner back.
The prisoner is known as the Pet, Avyi. Malnefoley is convinced the Pet knows important information about the cartels and a doctor’s experiment since she was a former associate of the doctor. Malnefoley is set on bringing the Pet, back to his compound, especially when she claims to hold the secret to conception. Somethings Malnefoley’s people can’t do. But soon he finds himself more than only intrigued in this secrets, the Pet’s character is just as intriguing.

Although this book is fun, and I really liked the authors writing style, I didn’t really feel excited about this book. This book can be read as a standalone, but I really wouldn’t recommend it. I saw reviews that said you could definitely read this book as a standalone. I don’t agree at all. I felt like I was missing out on stuff. I understood most things, but I think I would have loved this book much more if I had read the first two books first. Especially in the beginning of the book I found it hard to really get into the story. I just didn’t get everything and every word that was used.

But the authors writing style was good, the story was exciting, fun, and at times definitely passionate. The characters are well developed and really interesting to get to know.
I really hope I will be able to read the first two books because I read a lot of great stuff about this series and I just feel like I definitely will enjoy this series more if I read all three books.

For a genre that I do not usually read, I found myself reading this one from cover to cover in one day. The storyline is a mixture of mythology and fantasy set in today's time. It was weird getting used to the "language" with the different names and different world that they exist in, but once I got past the first few chapters and understood the concept, it started flowing well.

Since this is a third novel in the series, it probably would have helped me had I read the first two, but the author included enough back story for me to keep up and not feel lost. This book is full of action, fast paced drama, and excitement. I was sucked in and did not stop!

I have to say that this author is excellent at describing her characters and the surrounding details of the story. I felt like I could see Mal, and let me just say, he sounds HOT. This is definitely a romance based novel and the steamy scenes were awesome. To be able to pull in the reader like she does is a mark of a great author in my opinion.

For me, paranormal is usually last on my list of hot reads, but I will be watching for more from this author. I really enjoyed this new release.

I won Hunted Warrior in exchange for an honest review. This is the third book in the series and while it can be read as a stand alone, it took a bit catch up with the plot. The MC are charismatic and have great chemistry between them. The story is a bit darker than the books I usually read but I found it to an exciting change. I especially love the ending. I totally didn't see it coming. I have the first two in my stash and plan on reading them so I will be ready for the next book in the series.

This started off really strong, but sort of fizzled out for me about half of the way through. Instead of connecting deeper with Mal and Avyi, I felt like I knew them less and less as the book went on. Mal was wishy washy too; he would say something to Avyi to push her away, but then right after he'd decide he wanted to be with her. I didn't feel any real passion between them either. I don't know, I would've rated this a 4 towards the beginning, but I just disconnected with both the story and Mal and Avyi by the end.

Oh wow...this book is amazing! Lindsey Piper has an amazing way of writing that completely consumes you. It was hard to do anything else once I'd started reading, I was so gripped. The characters are complex and well written, the plot moves fast and is filled with excitement, action, passion, lust, to name just a few things. I haven't read anything else by this author, but I certainly will now.

I received this book as a first read. I just couldn't get into it. The pace was slow. The writing was clunky. It was overly descriptive. The love scenes were awkward and lacked eroticism. Many parts of this book are cheesy and contrived. There are better choices out there.

A Slow and Uneventful Read in a Story and World That Fell Short

Warning: This review may contain spoilers

I received a copy Hunted Warrior and I thought it might be an enjoyable enough read. I am not sure if it's because I'm started the series in the third book or not, but I struggled to get into the world of the of the "Dragon Kings". There didn't seem enough detail, enough of something, to make their world stand out and to be interesting. Whether in the intial page or final pages, it felt like reading a story about humans just with different descriptions. Nothing in the novel made me feel I was part of the world of characters - everything felt disorted and flat. It could be because I hadn't read the first and second novel, and missed vital parts of the world building story, or perhaps it was just the style of writing.

Unfortunately for me it didn't just stop at the world building. The main characters, both Avyi and Mal came across as flat and unintersting. I was reading the story, just to get to the end of the novel, not because I was invested in their story. This wasn't the slowest I have read a 349 page novel in while, because it was hard to get through with nothing keeping me invested in either the story or the characters.

Perhaps it is unfair to judge the world building and characters having only read the third entry in the series, but nothing I have read in this novel sparks even the small of curiosity to want to read Caged Warrior and Blood Warrior. I am not sure there will be people who will enjoy this story and what it is has to offer, but it certainly didn't engage with me on any level.

I liked the book, I didn't love it. This was the first book that I have listened to in the series and to be honest chose it because Jim Frangione was the narrator. The story was interesting enough, but wasn't my typical read. I also started at book 3, so I feel that there was a lot that I needed and would have enjoyed it more. I liked the characters and where it was going, but as I said would have enjoyed it more if I had read in order. Didn't feel like this could be a stand alone, but if you like Dragons and supernaturals then you will like this series.

I have been reading The Dragon Kings series by Lindsey Piper since I first got an email from Amazon about a new release with Caged Warrior and I was blown away by Piper's the world building.  I new immediately that I would stick with this series, no matter what.  I found out that I had missed the first entry into the world with Silent Warrior, so I immediately bought and read that novella.  I was glad I did read it the way I did, or I would have know too much about the series, and the characters of Silence and Hark.  Then came book two Blood Warrior, the tale of Tallis the Heretic and the Sun Goddess.  Ms. Piper was able to propel the mythos of her world forward with each of these installments.  Now comes the current installment in the series.  The Hunted Warrior, is the story of the Pet and Malnefoley of Tigon, the Honorable Giva; the leader of The Dragon Kings, who were both minor characters in Caged Warrior.

Whoops, I forgot to get you up to speed on the Dragon Kings as a race.

Oh,  you haven’t read the Dragon King novels?  Then let me back up a step or two. The Dragon King paranormal novels center around five clans of the dragon king. The dragon kings are descendants of the  Great Dragon. No, they aren't actually dragons, but they are supernatural beings with extraordinary powers. There are five clans, Pendray, Tigony, Sath, Indranan, and Garnis and each have their own unique abilities. These beings look human and can blend and exist within our human society. Also each clans lineage and history have become part of worlds mythos. The clans are broken up by regions and the powers they posses.

Tigony, of the Mediterranean region, would be the Greek gods and goddess and the Roman and Greek mythos that surrounds that region of the world.  The Tigony control electricity, i.e. Zeus’s lighting bolts.

The Indranan clan centered in the Asian Pacific, and gave rise to the mythos of that region. The Indranan control the mind, and they are telepathic, but they have a violent past. Each Indrana is born a twin and they believe that in order to get their full dragon gift of telepathy they must kill their twin. So as soon as they come into their power usually during adolescence, they hide from each other.

The Sath is the clan most closely associated with the Middle East and would have influenced that region's religion and mythos. The Sath, dragon gift is mimicry, they are seen as thieves by other clans.

The Pendray are the clan that influenced the Norse, and Celtic myths of Valhalla, and the Ulster traditions of myths. The Pendray are known for their fighting ability, the mythos of the berserker is most closely related to them. They are seen are little more than animals.

The last Clan is Garnis they are so few in number that they are known as the lost, not much is remembered about them. These are the five clans of the Dragon King that have guided and developed civilizations, up until the present. But now they are a people on the brink of extinction because they can no longer bear children.

Okay I think I have caught you up.  The Pet is a woman who was held captive by one of the the human cartels that supposedly have the answer to the Dragon Kings conception problem. The make the Dragon Kings fight in blood sports to be granted the right to the pregnancy 'miracle', that they hold.   Her story is one of sacrifice and learning to live with the choices we make.  In this book she encounters the Honorable Giva, Malnefoley, he sees being the Dragon Kings leader as a cross he must bear.  He would rather be anything else, and in part he is a spoiled entitled jerk.  The book delves into fate, and destiny versus freewill, and let's just say that Malnefoley is none to happy with fate.  He is a mercurial ass at the beginning of the book.  He maybe a leader but he does not know how to lead.  There is a lot of back and forth with these two characters, at some points I really wanted to hit Malenfoley with some brass knuckles.  Like the old saying he is the horse and the Pet can lead him to water, but will he drink, not if the ass can help it.  This is a book that involves two strong characters that go toe to toe with each other, to save their race.

Note this book was provided by publisher, put I had already pre-ordered the ecopy and that is what I read.  Very good book and series.  Also Fire Warrior is available for pre-order it is prices at 99 cents so I guess it will be a novella.

The heroine once lived her life in a cage at the hands of an evil man who kidnapped her from her family and experimented on her. Known simply as the pet, she was liberated by the leader of their race but once again found herself in a cage, this times at the hands of the hero. But she escaped, driven by visions of a child who, with her help, will rise up and end the barbaric gladiator games that enslave her people.

The hero follows her, fully expecting to drag her back to Greece but the strong willed woman he encounters throws him off. She's bold in her dismissal of his powers and openly mocks him. He's disturbed by the way she makes him feel like a man. For so long he's been untouchable. The all powerful, but reluctant leader of their race, both relishing in his arrogance and command and bemoaning his unwanted position. He uses none of the influential powers to help his people but just one day in the heroine presence opens him mind to just how selfish he's been.

Despite the fact she's been a slave almost all of her life and is cursed with ability to see the future, both good and bad possibilities, she's using her powers for the good of others. She's open in her belief that things will be as they are meant to be but that isn't something the hero is comfortable with so he denies her abilities and calls her a liar for most of the book. Though she's deeply hurt by his lack of faith, she's unable and unwilling to stop their destiny of becoming lovers.

I so wanted to like this book and in many ways I did. I knew in my heart that it was a great book but the language and the tempo of the story threw me off. I struggled to become engaged with the writing. This is because every sentence was so grand and dramatic with metaphors and heavy phrasing. It was like trying to read Shakespeare in a lot of ways. But as I said, I did like it. There were times where a got into a rhythm and could go with the flow and it was then that I could have felt right in rating this a 5 star. But alas, I overall it was a jumble of conversations going around in a circle with nothing much happening in between blips of action.

It took over a year and a half for this sequel, and it was worth every bit of the wait. Malnefoley was introduced in the first book, and his past and struggle to lead his people, when he’s known mostly as the Usurper, makes for delicious angst. His developing relationship with the Pet will melt hearts and leave you unable to put this book down. Here’s hoping this dark, addictive series keeps going!

Two people — known mostly by their sobriquets — are forced together to bring an end to the cruel sport of the cage fights, employed by the five clans of the Dragon Kings all attempting to win a chance at having children. But as Malnefoley finally takes the mantle of Giva, which some don’t believe he should have, and the Pet, once a slave to a crime organization guarding the secrets of procreation, emerges from her shell, they have to learn to trust each other — and the visions of the future the Pet can see.

As leader of the Dragon Kings, Malnefoley must solve the puzzle of their slow extinction but first he'll have to decide if he can trust the woman known as the Pet in this mesmerizing paranormal romance. Enthralling with strong vibrant characters that demand attention is the only way that I can describe this story. I was completely captivated from the very beginning and I was as awestruck as the characters during the thrilling conclusion...WOW, I didn't see that coming and I can't wait to find out what happens next. I have to say that the story could be read all by its lonesome self but you would probably feel as if you were missing something so it is my recommendation that the series be read in sequence.

This is book 3 in the series, but the first for me. And I feel that its great as a stand-alone book. I did NOT feel lost or confused since not reading any others books in the series. I loved this book, however I do not think I will read the others.
I will say that the beginning might be a little confusing, or slow to start. But there is action almost from the beginning.
The Pet, later to become Avyi is hard-core and a kickass street fighter. But unforuntely that street fighting can only help her so much. Poor thing, has a wonderful gift, yet at times really doubts herself.
The Giva, Malnefoley (Mal), he is the Leader of Dragon Kings but has little faith.
The two of them together soon learn that together they can be GREAT. We watch them both grow, learn and develop themselves their gifts and their faith.
I really enjoyed reading this!
*I received this book as a gift.

I really enjoyed reading this book.I won this book on Goodreads First Reads. As soon as it arrived I started reading it. I liked it so much it took me only a couple of days to read it. I did not want it to end. This story kept me on my feet, usually I can guess what comes next while I'm reading. Not with this book. I also love the interaction between Avyi(the pet) and Malnefoley(Giva). I will be checking out other books by this author to read. I think everyone who likes romance books will love this book. Thank you for a great read Lindsey Piper. Therese Abdali

Hunted Warrior is a fast paced read that will keep you on your toes. Love the characters and their chemistry. Malnefoley is the spoiled and secretive leader of the Dragon Kings and questions everything Pet says or does. He follows her, berates her and woos her. She defies him at every turn and get as far away from him if she could. They drive each other positively mad. Great Read. This series just keeps getting better & better.

Is this it? Is it the last one? It was very slow, took me forever to read. I thought this was a poor ending to the series. Goodreads says there's book 3.5 coming called Fire Warrior, but that it isn't being released on Amazon until 2020. What's up with that?
