Cursed Hearts #1

Black Heart

Rate this book
There was something seriously wrong with Marty. That was the only explanation that she could come up with. Why else would she feel this way for the biggest SOB in town? Granted, he was also the hottest man in town, but he was also arrogant, callous, and determined to drive her away even as he drove her crazy with his touch. She should just walk away from him and probably would if it wasn’t for this connection that she’d always had with him that kept making her want more with the one man that couldn’t give her anything more than heartache.

He should have left and never looked back when he’d decided to finally do the right thing and push Marty out of his life, but instead he stuck around to torture himself by staying close to the one woman that he could never allow himself to have. She deserved better than him, better than the tortured existence that he led and better than the horrifying future that waited for him.

Here's how it all went for me...

1. I started reading the book

The first thing I read was the Author's note that said she won't make cliffies in this series.

Dear Author:

2. I started reading the actual book LOL

First thing you have to know is that I had absolutely NO IDEA what the book was about. So everything was a surprise, especially when I finally found out what it's about.

Shocker!!!!

3. I met Shayne

He is the bestest ever :D I seriously love that guy, he's hilarious and can't wait for his book!!!!!

4. Tristan

First of all, I love the name. LOVE!
Second, I love that he was a jerk. LOVE!
He kinda changed in the second half of the book but I'll talk more about it later :)
But overall he was great :))))

5. Marty

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

She was Ok but pretty irritating in the first half of the book :(
Oh well.

6. The feel of the book

This book had me going

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

very often :D

Overall I really enjoyed it, but it is kinda confusing considering the book totally changes in the second half, it's like those are two books merged into one. Just totally different, even the characters are totally different, it's like it had no connection with the first half :(
But both parts have the good stuff, like meeting Shayne's :DD even though confusing, it was still fun :D

7. The ending

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The last bit of the book made me cry :(((
But it was still a wonderful ending, with a teaser for the next book!!! I can not wait!!!!!!!

8. Overall

This is more a 3,5 star rating, but I'm rounding it to 4 because I absolutely loved the beginning and almost all the first half of the book, and the ending made me cry and it was great too :)))
I am definitely going to continue with the series and can't wait for the next book to come out :))))

I'm not sure where to start with this review, so I'm just going to go with how I felt while reading.

In the beginning we meet Tristan and he was grumpy but hilarious at the same time. So I was all kinds of excited about him!!!!

Not that he ever let me down, actually all the characters were fabulous and witty. Marty, a female, well THE female in this book was ok maybe not my favorite female lead but ok at the same time. She stood her ground and didn't let Tristan walk all over her....he has a habit of that.

Then we get to meet Shayne....OMG and my excitement level exploded. He was SOOOOOO funny...everything he said was great!!!

But there's something a little different about him...can't tell you what it is though.

I knew nothing about this book when I read it so I'm not going to give away anything. A friend asked me to read it and I said, "ok."

Then my excitement level kind of waned because things got slightly repetitive around 50%...everybody was saying the same thing...the inner monologues were getting to long...so I started skimming.

I kind of starting feeling like this...

Ok then at 65% - 70%......I don't even know what the hell happened....this book took a life of it's own and went in a direction that left me saying.....

Maybe that was my own fault for not knowing more about the book but in other words I had a BIG WTF moment!!!!

So all in all I'm glad I read this book but at the same I'm still scratching my head...

I love anything that is R. L Mathewson she could write on toilet paper and I would read it. Love her!

I really enjoyed this book. So different to anything I've read before. It was not what I was expecting the book to be like at all, but R.L knocked another great one right outta the park. Can't wait for more of this series... Awesome book highly recommend it to anyone, along with all of R.L other books.

I SO wanted to love this one, but it was not to be.

The book was just all over the place for me. The premise was promising, but there were too many tangents and so much set up for the books to come that Tristan and Marty's story just got lost.

Then when we finally reached the climax of the story, it totally went off track and focused on one of Tristan's brothers.

A real disappointment from an author I love.

I really like this author's Neighbor's from Hell series, so I was excited to read this one. It didn't start out good, in fact I was bored, was going to dnf, but kept going hoping that it would pick up. After finishing the book I wish that I would have gone with my first instinct.

Tristan was such an ass that it was hard to like him, even knowing his past and his secrets. I sort of liked that he had a spirit that helped him out, but the snipping back and forth got old fast. I hated how Tristan treated Marty, especially when he claimed to love her. I hated even more that Marty just took all the crap that Tristan shoveled her way.

I was so so on the book up to this point, but when the book really lost me was when it was revealed that Shayne was really his brother from many years ago and that he and his other 6 brothers, along with Marty were under a curse, one where they kept getting reborn and in each new life they found each other only to then die. I found myself asking WTH is going on, it seemed like this plot point came out of left field and I found myself skimming at this point.

If you want to try this author this is not the book to judge her writing by.

5 Never Ending Love Stars

All I can say is that Tristsn is hot and I love to find one if I could ;). Tristan and Marty are so awesome together. They are destined for each other but the cursed have forced them apart so many times till they can break the curse. I love the bantering and bickering between the H/h. I can't wait for Shayne's book. I hope all the brothers get their book. I'm so looking forward towards Liam and Finn.

“Tristan Black, you open this door right now before I break it down!” she yelled. “I am going to kick your ass!”

“He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her back until she was pressed tightly against his body. “Why don’t I show you how much I missed you?”

“And how long do you think that will take?” she asked, loving the way it felt to be in his arms, whole.

“For the rest of my life, mo shonuachar.”

I don’t know what to say about this book beyond saying it was AWESOME! (Yes, it deserves all caps.)

R.L. Mathewson is an amazing writer. She knows how to suck me into a story and keep hold of me until the last page. And her books always stick with me long after I’ve finished them.

I’ll admit that I was a little hesitant about this book when I first heard about it. I shouldn’t have been since I’ve never read a bad book by Mathewson, but this was a new series; not one that has been out and had multiple books. I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t know if it would disappoint me. But, that didn’t stop me from snatching it up and devouring it at the first opportunity I had.

But once I started, I couldn’t put it down. I loved Tristan. Yes, he was a jerk, but I still loved him. And I wanted him to get the girl he wanted. I really liked Marty. She was a strong woman but I kept yelling at her to give Tristan a chance. I wanted them together. And I love their families. They were just awesome and loving. R.L. Mathewson is great at writing fun, loving and real families.

I won’t spoil the twist to the book, I’ll just say that there is a twist…a couple of them really. The first one I loved. It was something different for the author. And while I was a little leery at first about the second twist, it grew on me. I can’t wait to read more from this series.

2.5-3 stars

It pains me to rate this so low since I love R L Mathewson but this book was a hard one for me to rate. It was just okay for me. The premise is a good one and I think sets up the series very nicely, I look forward to future installments in this series. However, I found this book to be a bit of disappointment. It was all over the place. The main story line, the one that this sets up the series really should have been the focal point of this story but instead it started with one thing, moved on to another, moved to fast in some parts and had no progression in others. there were things in this story that I have no idea why they were even there. That being said, I did like the main part of the story and the most of the characters. The heroine annoyed me a few times but nothing so bad that I disliked her. All in all it was just okay but I think the series itself has promise.

Please write more in the Neighbors series!

I was extremely disappointed with Black Heart. It was a hot mess.

The first 50% was almost a normal romance story with a matchmaking mother, father, etc. Except for the the H's problem, which resulted in him trying to repulse the h by acting like a jerk and being cold to her, even though he really wanted her. He would get jealous, but then decide that he had to leave her alone for her own good. Meanwhile she always wants him, but his attitude pisses her off. There were some good aspects to this part of the story, but overall it wasn't fleshed out enough. I'd give this part 3 stars, but it should have been longer and encompassed the entire story.

The second 50% was terrible. Just horrible. Not really romance, but sort of urban fantasy or paranormal something, which is not her forte. I'm not sure if the author was trying to be mysterious, so she deliberately provided details in a fragmented and random fashion. Or she was trying to be funny with the haphazard and contentious family interactions. Either way, it didn't work. It was just irritating. The characters were suddenly enlightened as to what was going on, even though it was still unclear and a mess. There were also way too many new characters added - probably because each will get his own book. And there needed to be editing. Sometimes the names are wrong, which causes confusion and adds another irritating element to an already warped tapestry. (Once the H's mother's name is used in place of the h's, another time the adopted brother's instead of the actual brother's).

It's like the funny aspects of her Neighbors series (which I enjoyed) and an amateur ghost story were thrown into a blender and then splashed on a wall. This was the author's first story, which she said was terrible, so she re-wrote it. Maybe it was too close to her heart, and she couldn't really edit it enough.

This is the first book of the series - future books will have a different H and h - but I won't be reading them. I wish she'd write more in the Neighbors series.

I am so excited to read this. A first come back work of R.L Mathewson.
I loved loved Tristan, though he was a jerk, to all, still i love him.He was also straightforward, hilarious, handsome, tough detective.

I enjoyed the half of story. I have no idea that this was a paranormal. I like witty & funny Marty. The family too was hilarious. I love to meet them. I like the banter of all characters too. half of the book remind me of neighbors from hell. So i continued reading even im not into this kind of paranormal. Im thinking why not give a try.

until i reach the last 25% of the book, up till end, this was all me

I like the story but not love it. If not for Tristan, i may not finish this. But im still want to read Shayne story.

This is not it.
1. I love love this author.
2. She’s clearly never met an Irish person cuz her representation of us is fucking ridiculous. We don’t use the word ‘ye’ in every single context that other people would use the word ‘you’. Just not a thing.
3. IRISH PEOPLE DO NOT SAY LAD IN EVERY SINGLE SENTENCE THEY SAY.
(Reading this was honestly so frustrating. If your Irish AVOID AT ALL COSTS, This one just ain’t for us man.)
4. The characters had no development
5. The plot was a mess

Just my opinion obviously but I’d skip this one. I highly recommend the Pyte and Neighbour from Hell series. They are the best!!!!

This Author is one of my favourites as she writes stories that have the perfect combination of humour, romance and great characters. She rarely disappoints and I always enjoy her stories. As a reader you know what you’re going to get as R.L Mathewson does ‘just what it says on the tin’. She’ll make you laugh, swoon and fall in love.

Black Heart is a journey into the paranormal. Ghosts in fact. Now I’m not normally an avid reader of this type of paranormal so for me to enjoy this story, seeing as it had ghosts in it, well it’s a testament to the brilliance of this Author. Because enjoy it…..I did.

This story is book #1 in a series so expect a slow introduction and a fleshing out of many characters. Oh and there are lots of them, besides our hero and heroine….but they are gorgeous, cocky, hilarious and Irish so it’s all good!

Our main characters Tristan and Marty have known each other pretty much forever.

“He was her hero, the one she went to when she skinned her knees and the one she yelled for whenever she got stuck up in a tree. He always came for her. Always.” – Marty

As per normal with this Author’s characters, there’s a strong connection, a past and a wanting heart. This is no exception and their story truly is heart-warming yet heart-breaking at the same time. Their story is also magical, funny and frustrating.

Tristan is one hell of a cocky, funny and at times maddening guy. Yet he’s totally lovable. He’s a gorgeous bad arse cop. Not only that though, as we move along in the story, he shows a vulnerability that’ll make your heart melt. This despite being known as a “cold bastard.”

“He was handsome, quiet and easy going, well as long as you didn’t get on his bad side.” – Marty

As for Marty, I really liked her. She is refreshingly down to earth, intelligent, sweet yet slightly naïve. She knows what she wants and she has no real fear trying to get it.

“After all these years he thought he’d grown immune to her and this goddamn connection that he felt with her….” – Tristan

The storyline of Black Heart is packed full of twists and surprises. As I was reading, I will admit to being confused at times and thinking what?! But once I got a few answers and learnt the how’s and the why’s my doubts and questions were answered. In particular, I questioned aspects of Tristan and Marty’s relationship and their actions which brought them to the moment they admitted their feelings. It all came together and the way in which it did surprised me as it was wrapped in mystery and intrigue.

“…I didn’t want to spend one more minute on this earth without you Marty..” – Tristan

Certain scenes in this story broke my heart and they all centre round Tristan’s past. I would have liked to have seen and known more of Tristan and Marty both individually and together before the answers came. Especially them as a couple which I thought was a tad rushed.

“..Are you still going to be an asshole?” – Marty

“Yes, he said….but you can kick my ass if I step out of line…” – Tristan

As for the laughs…well between Tristan and his Therapist and Tristan and his ‘mate’ Shayne well I was in absolute stitches!

Is this one of my favourite books by this Author…Sadly no. However, I laughed, I fell in love and I felt emotional so that makes it a good read for me. Black Heart really is chock a block with humour, suspense and romance and I will definitely be picking up the next book in this series.

R.L. definitely did a great job with this book as I can't stop thinking about it now that I'm finished reading it. I'm in a bit of a HAPPY book hangover.

When I first started this book, I realized about 11% in, that this book wasn't listed under a certain genre that plays a big role in this book. But I loved that it was a secret that I had no idea about. It definitely surprised me. Much later in to the book the other major theme comes out, which I loved too, and was another twist for me to add. I truly couldn't put this book down; that's how much I loved it and was glued to it.

Tristan has a rough life starting out. It changes at around age 6 but still life growing up is still rough, but for other reasons, which help to shape him to be the person he is. The first twist of this book is the reason why he's so surly or as others put it: an SOB, a bastard or A-hole...those are the general feelings about him from others in his home town. However, his major weakness is Marty. They were such good friends growing up. He thinks he's not good enough for her and his life is holding him back from pursuing her until he can't stand it any longer and has the ALPHA MALE need to possess her. He's always been strongly drawn to her. (NO he's not a werewolf).

Marty was raised mostly by her father who is a cop. Tristan used to be her "BFF" growing up. He was always loving and kind to her and took care of her. He even kissed her boo-boo's. She has always been secretly in love with him and strongly drawn to him.

These two are forced to work together after years of little to no contact. Now, their lives, as they know it, are about to change course and collide and sparks will fly.

What I LOVED about this book:
1. Twists and turns
2. Pranks
3. Humor
4. The banter and antics of Tristan/Denny and Tristan/Shayne
5. I LOVED LOVED LOVED the humor and antics of Tristan's "extended" family members. lol.
6. The epi has to be my favorite and it's pretty funny.
7. A food theme makes a little appearance in this new series.
8. This book made me cry 3 times.
9. Tristan's family: Hank, Beth, and Denny. Such a great loving and caring group. Plus his other "fathers" Hank and Shayne.
10. Steamy
11. This story sucked me in and never let me go.
12. Put me in a HAPPY book hangover.
13. HEA - that's right NO cliffhanger.
14. The two major themes of this book.
15. Over all this book made me happy and left me with a smile.
12. Dual POV's
13. Once a couple always a couple.

NOTE: there is a chapter in this book that is told from Tristan's pov in a long time ago flashback. It seems some people were confused by this chapter. I didn't find anything confusing about it. Some others also complained they didn't get enough info about the "curse"... I was okay with that as she has loads of other books to write where we can get more info about this part of the series title.

**re-posting this review since it was erased**
This book was nothing I expected and everything I could have wanted. I had no clue this book would have a twist, and when I found out I was so surprised and happy. R.L.Mathewson is a brilliant author that I know will never let me down, and once again she wrote a beautiful engrossing book that I didn't' want to put down and that was well worth the wait. R.L.Mathewson has a way with words that draws you in and makes you love the characters, she can write funny like you breathe air, it's effortless. And her men are mouth watering and drool worthy.

Tristan had a horrible childhood until he was adopted and finally learned what love was. His family loved him unconditionally and he's learned to hide the bad stuff. Marty grew up living by Tristan and she has always loved him, she followed him everywhere he went when she was little and he always made her feel understood and loved. But when he grew up he grew apart from her and she still feels that pain, Now they barley speak and she knows thats how it will always be. When Marty starts working at the Police station she is placed in the same office as Tristan, and Tristan isn't happy. Tristan has loved and been drawn to Marty since they met but he knows that they can never be together, with all that he deals with, with his secret Tristan knows that she's better off and safer without him.

Working with Marty is the last thing Tristan wants so he sets about making Marty's life horrible, so she will quit but Marty is just as stubborn as Tristan and the more time they spend together the harder it becomes for both Tristan and Marty to deny their feelings. When they both finally give in truths are revealed and a curse is set into motion that will destroy them both. Wow what can I say I loved this book The twist was so well written and such a great surprise it made me love this book even more. Tristan and Marty were great main character that I easily fell in love with. Tristan was a fantastic hero, he was strong, and commanding, possessive and hard headed and I loved him to bits. Not only did I love Tristan and Marty but I loved all the side characters as well. Tristan's brothers were so funny and charming they easily stole my heart and many scenes.

This is yet another example of brilliance at it's best. This book was effortless, it was funny and romantic, exciting and interesting. I never found myself bored or wanting to be done with this book so that I could start another book like I find myself feeling when I read other books. R.L.Mathewson gives us just enough to be excited for book two and for the series, I'm so attached to the brothers that I can't wait for them to get their own story and happy ever after.

I really liked this book but just couldnt love it cuz i got tired of Trishtan acting like an ASSHOLE in ever page lolz! Sometimes it was funny but then i got pissed but i know he loved Martie and was acting like that to keep her away from him cuz he believed that he wasnt good enough for her but still i hate when our hero or heroine does that it just makes me want to pull their hair and scream at them till they get some sense into their stupid brain! Anyways i loved the characters they were all great like RLM characters are :) and to be honest i gave this book four stars beacuse i felt that it left a lot of parts out like i wanted to see Trishtan talking to Martie about his problems (like hello he could see ghosts) they never actually talked alone after all the drama and stuff happened so it felt like things were rushed in this one. I wanted to see more of them like we never got to see a wedding just read that they were married. I wish we could have seen their son growing up like two years for on or so like an epilogue i know there was a short one about Shayne (which i cant wait to read about in the next book) and his interactions with the other brothers but still it wasnt the same like neigbors from hell epilogues now those were my kind of epilogues and i loved it! I hope that Shayne's soulmate isnt a bitch (thats how she acted in one of the scenes so am assuming she is one) in their book and is actually a nice girl. I hope she is a virgin too cuz if the brothers are born again just like their soulmates than they shouldnt feel attracted to anyone or have sex with anyone but their soulmates, so i do hope all the heroines for our gorgeous brothers are virgins like them! (I loved that the hero is in this one just like our heroine and this shows us how much they loved each other thats why they waited for each other and no one else)! Cant wait till the next one :)

I'm torn on a rating. 4 stars for the story and characters but 3 stars for execution.
I enjoy the characters and the storyline and will continue reading the other books. However, I felt parts of the book was rushed, some parts were glossed over and we are told about it after the fact. I would have liked to see Tristan and Marty's relationship develop more then I did, so that I could connect with them as a couple a bit more. When the twist in the story was fully revealed (75% or so) I felt like I was thrown into land of confusion. I was reading along prior to that, enjoying the relationship happenings, chuckling, and then BAM! I was "wtf just happened" and "am I still reading the same book?". It all makes sense eventually but I wasn't a fan of the delivery - I felt so lost for awhile. All that being said, I love the author and I think this series will be really enjoyable - she does some fabulous characters. I just hope to see some changes in the next book (yay Shayne!!) in how the story is delivered.

As a fan of R.L. Mathewson's work, it pains me to give this review.

It’s my first paranormal book from RLM, I wanted to like it, but it just didn’t work out. I had some issues with the book. First, I thought the connection between the two characters were lacking . Second, out of nowhere, around 60% in, the story does a complete 180 in which I was completely blindsided, leaving me confused and uninterested. What made it worst after the sudden turn of events was the bantering between the secondary characters, which took half a chapter before anything actually got clarified. Had it been another author, it probably would have been in my DNF shelf, but I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt but it continued to spiral down for me.
It was like trying to read two different books being merged into one. I’m sad to say, I won’t be continuing this series.

This was a pretty cute book. I felt like I lost interest towards the second half of the book where we learn about what's really going on. There were just too many POVs and situations were explained and then re-explained. I do love this author and I will gladly read more of her books, but this one just lost my attention after awhile lol. I liked it in the beginning and the first half. I do think we could have used more time between the MCs because I felt like after how mean he was in the beginning, we could have had more groveling from our hero - even though nothing he did was HORRIBLE. I am definitely interested in how Shayne's book will come along. I really did adore him ;) I don't know if I am liking the description of his "soul mate"though. She is sounding kind of butchy ... haha

What did I read? I'm confused and have got a headache trying to make sense of what went on...So many unanswered questions.

This was not her usual writing style that I liked so much in Neighbors From Hell series. There were a lot of holes in the plot, quite a few eye rolling moments and a few more or WTH. Around 60% I was getting excited as I thought that things will now be explained but no, it isn't until around 90% that we get answers, well kind of.

And while everyone in the book somehow knew what was going on I was left in the dark, scratching my head and getting frustrated. And to make things worse the writing style was atrocious, lots of repetitions and all over the place to the point that I had to reread a paragraph a few times to understand it and other times had to go back few chapters and reread a passage to see if I misunderstood the plot.

But whilst is easier to reread one paragraph because it's not flowing smoothly, trying to go back and reread pages and pages so I could understand what was going on and taking into consideration that it took nearly one third of the book to finally reveal the twist it was tiring and nearly impossible.

And then comes the epilogue, again a WTH moment, nothing about Tristan and Marty, it's all about Shayne and not an epilogue at that...

Here's just an example of repetitions:

..."he focused all of his attention on unbuttoning his shirt. "I could fire up the grill," he offered, trying to use her love for barbecue against her.
"No, that's fine. I'd rather hear what you have to say," she said with a little sigh as she gently pushed his hand away and finished unbuttoning his shirt for him. Once she was done, she pulled the shirt out of his pants and moved to push the shirt off when she spotted an angry bruise poking out from beneath the edge of his shirt.
"Oh my god, Tristan" she said, while quickly, yet carefully, removing his shirt...

The said shirt was mentioned a few more times on the same page...

I was just informed about this... where the F have I've been? Where am I going to find the time to read? I am just so excited! I loved the A Neighbor from Hell Series and Mathewson is awesome!!!

I am not a fan of the paranormal romance. I didn't realize that this book was going to take such a turn toward the paranormal when I picked it up. I enjoyed the first half of the book a lot. I liked the characters, and their relationship was believable. And then the story started to get really complicated, the paranormal portion of the story was not very interesting, and I stopped reading.

The description of this book is very misleading. It completely downplays the paranormal factor.

If you like paranormal romance, you may enjoy this book. However, if you're like me, and paranormal isn't your cup of tea, then skip this one.

Loved it! really funny & amused me a lot. I love soul mate stories and this is the set up for a full series of them. If this book & the set up for the next book is anything to go by... prepare for some clashing of the sexes - determined female vs stubborn Alpha males.... I'm gonna love them !

GENRE: Paranormal; Ghosts and Curses

LENGTH: Good length; 418 pages.

MAIN CHARACTERS:

Marty: Brunette lead character who is secretly in love with Tristan but she thinks he doesn't notice her. She is still heartbroken over Tristan abandoning her when they were younger.

Tristan Black: The hero of the novel. He has golden blonde hair, bright green eyes, perfect tan, and chiseled good looks. He is trying to hide his feelings from Marty because he feels so screwed up and thinks she deserves better. .

Shayne: He has black hair and killer green eyes. He is also Tristan's ghostly protector.

LIKES ABOUT THE BOOK:
Tristan's loyalty to Marty.
Tristan and Marty's connection.
Shayne...I wish I had an Irish ghost protecting me!
The comedy in this book.
The loving side characters; especially Tristan's mom!

DISLIKES ABOUT THE BOOK:
The story behind the curse...it was quite confusing and I didn't completely understand it until the end.
POV changes; it wasn't a smooth as R. L. Mathewson's previous books and made the book feel like of jumpy.
Tristan's biological parents; how could they just do that to him???

OVERALL THOUGHTS ABOUT BOOKS: I read the synopsis and I really didn't know what this book was about (kind of wish it explained a little bit better but without giving too much away). I just saw that the genre was paranormal and I was kind of iffy about reading this. I haven't really dipped into a lot of paranormal stuff...well other than the usual vampire, werewolf, and shifter books. But I decided I had to give it a chance because it's from R. L. Mathewson (duh) lol. This was definitely very different from any other books I have read. I thought this was a very unique telling about soul mates. I know this one wasn't a favorite of many R. L. Mathewson fans but I just loved it. I do have to admit that I felt there were quite a few loose ends with Tristan and Marty's story; like with Tristan's biological parents. However, besides that, I really did enjoy reading this book. This book tugged on my heart strings from the beginning till the end. I cried various times throughout the book (sad and happy tears). I can't wait to read Shayne's story; no one gets to pick their soul mate lol.

STEAM LEVEL: There is steam but needs just a bit more to make it OMG Hot.

DOES IT END IN A CLIFFHANGER?: No, but it does kind of leave you hanging because the ending sets you up for the next one.

FAVORITE QUOTES:
"Do you mind shifting? You have a small tube of chapstick or something in your pocket that's poking me." (OMFG, hahaha!)

"And I bet you were so upset that you just had to rush home and get a dose of porn to help settle your nerves," "That's it exactly, lad." (Oh Shayne and his porn)

"She was his life now. She was all he ever wanted, ever hoped for and he wasn't willing to live without her."

FINAL RATING: 4.5 stars!

WOULD I RECOMMEND?: YES; especially if you interested in books about curses, ghosts, and soul mates.

Walking into this story, I did not read the blurb ahead of time, so I had no idea what the story was going to be about. I just knew I heard RLM was writing a new series, and being a big fan of her Pyte/Sentinel and Neighbors From Hell series, knew that I had to read this one too. And let me say, RLM has done it again. I loved this first book and am so excited about the start of this amazing new series.

As for the prologue, I loved that we had one. If you read the author's note before the book, you'll get her background to the story (which I love that she included) and why she included the prologue. For me, the prologue gave the story an added element that I liked, and am very glad she put it in the book.

As for the storyline, every time I thought I knew what was coming up and felt like things were starting to plateau, RLM would throw something in there that I did not see coming. I loved that she created a story including elements of her style from previous books that I loved of hers, but also took this story to its own unique place. She combined a crazy romance between two people who loved and antagonized each other, paranormal elements that kept me guessing, and writing that combined humor and seriousness. I'd say more but I really don't want to give any plot details away. I loved discovering it for myself, and I hope you do too.

As for the characters, RLM knows how to create a frustrating, strangle-worthy, yet loving, swoon-worthy alpha male. Tristan is no exception. Add in Marty, our heroine who is smart and driven, can love unconditionally, but can stand up for herself and go toe-to-toe with the best of them, and you've got a couple who are fun (or frustrating) to watch in any situation. I completely bought into their relationship and felt on edge any time things weren't going the way I wanted them to go. Without giving anything away, let's just say this is a couple you will be rooting for.

As for the secondary characters, that is the cherry on top of this sundae. Both Tristan and Marty have great and quirky families, and I loved them. Their little interactions sprinkled throughout the book are a terrific addition. Then we meet more mysterious characters later (that I will not spoil), who add both seriousness and humor, and bring the story to a whole new level. Seriously, I like all these characters already, and I can already tell they are going to be fabulous throughout the entire series. I cannot wait to read more!

Bottomline: I'm very excited about this new series of RLM's. It combines all of the elements I like: humor, drama, paranormal, mystery, love, suspense, and great characters. There are 8 (or 9) books planned, but no major cliffhangers (yay!). We get a glimpse of what the next book will follow toward the end, and I'm already itching for it. If you are already an R.L. Mathewson fan, then this is a series you are sure to love. If you are an R.L. Mathewson newbie, I definitely recommend you dive right into the Cursed Hearts series.

Ok, I have yet to read an R.L. Mathewson book I didn't love. This one fits right in! I could not put it down! I loved Tristan so much, even though he was an ass. He was a funny ass so in a way he made up for it ;) Marty was pretty cool too. I absolutely adored Shayne and the rest of the guys. Tristan's family was one of the best I've read and I loved them all! This book did have a twist that I didn't see coming and was pretty cool. I just loved everything about it! I really really can't wait for more books in this series! That's the only downside. Reading a new series that only has one book out and no release date for the rest :( I guess I'll try to be patient... sigh
