Is there a better story-teller than the prolific TC Boyle? I somehow doubt it.
San Miguel is set on the island of that name, a small storm-tossed place just off the coast of California.
It is an inter-generational story telling of a family's struggles with extreme elements, hardship and isolation as they struggle to make a living from farming sheep.
It is wonderfully vivid and written with an expansive zest. You can tell that Boyle enjoyed creating this story and that he revels in his great gifts for telling stories. The cast is tight, the scenery beautiful but limited by its location, the plot moving.
There is nothing not to enjoy about Boyle and this beautiful work is a great example of his power to move and delight.

This is a very interesting and well written Historical Fiction Novel. It begins in the late 1800’s and ends in the 1940’s and documents the lives of 3 women and their families who lived on San Miguel Island. The first is Marantha Waters and her husband and daughter. Marantha is sickly with a lung disease and life on the island is very harsh and unhealthy for her. The next is Marantha’s daughter, Edith, who is forced to work for her stepfather on the island. She is imprisoned there with no hope of escaping the island. The third is Elise Lester who moves to the island as a new bride with her husband. For Elise, although the life is physically difficult on the island, the island is her home. She loves her husband and living on the island feels safe to her. I really enjoyed this book which is well written. I highly recommend this book for a good read.
