I really loved this book! A few quibbles aside (e.g. that last story with her mom in the hospital dragged a bit), this was laugh out loud funny, and thought provoking at the same time. I absolutely adore Nabanita Deb Sen's sense of humour, and ability to add so much nuance to a few simple words. [Fair warning, if you are offended easily, especially by authors treating Our Epics with levity, stay away from this one. She has things to say about Lord Ram and Kabi Valmiki; not exactly complimentary things]
In the first part, I loved how she flipped the Epics on its head, without actually rewriting (or even reimagining) it. Her writing is brilliant and her humour spot on. It's the little things that stick out for me. For example, within the first few pages, she described the shower of flowers from the Heavens on our Epic Hero not as পুষ্পবৃষ্টি but as আকাশ কুসুম. That cracked me right up, and also set the tone for the rest of the stories. [It is books like this that make me so so grateful that our right wing "nationalists" don't actually read - they would definitely have gotten this one banned 😏]
The second part, with short scenes centered around her family life was also wonderful. I have always loved stories based on her zany family - they come across as so genuine, like they could be my next door neighbours, and yet so utterly funny and poignant in equal measures.
The third part, about modern women and their trial and travails was distinctly lacking on the humour. It was serious subjects, dealt with seriously. But the writing remained brilliant, and I really enjoyed these stories too.
All in all, a brilliant book, and I am so glad that I finally got my hands on this!
