Us humans at the base of society don't give a damn who the king is!
Bloody and violent, but history, especially history involving civil war and who will end up sitting on the throne, is usually both of those things in spades.
It starts of small, we encounter two young peasant teenage boys, best friends and determined to make something of themselves one day, together, and then they get involved unwittingly, with those in power and it...doesn't end well.
This is dark, and might I say again, violent, which is SO not my wheelhouse, but the characters drew me in. They are multifaceted, they are human, they aren't perfect, though you ache for the MC to be, because he's a precious cream puff and I want him to find happiness, somehow.
Highly recommended to those who enjoy the darker side of manga and history. I didn't think I was one of those, but this is very intelligently written and emotionally grabbing.
4, this was me leaving my wheelhouse and being pleasantly surprised with the results, stars.
My thanks to NetGalley and VIZ Media LLC for an eARC of this book to read and review.

This surprised me in a good way. I wasn’t expecting much, but I do like to branch out from my usual romance genre to read new things once in a while and this drew me in super fast.
Being based on a historical record makes some of the wilder swings go down more easily and even the ‘ugly-good’ artwork grew on me after a while. It’s violent, but a lot tamer than, say, Battle Royale.
The series smartly starts with a micro focus on two war orphans, Xin and Piao, before slowly expanding out to follow the travails of an entire kingdom (with clear intent to blow that out even further to encompass all of China itself).
Rather than being broken by their circumstances, Xin and Piao train hard and work towards a future where their skill with a blade earns them the riches they can only dream about.
When that chance comes, however, it breaks them apart and then traces its way back to the king himself and a civil war that rages behind the scenes. It is terribly compelling and I appreciated how it picked up steam as it went.
Whether down to its historical basis or not, the writing here is good. Xin is a strong hero, even if he is believably childish at the outset. There were at least three times where either the main plot or a character’s reaction genuinely shocked me, which felt really satisfying.
Yes, you have to accept that a young teenager can go toe to toe with a trained assassin using nothing but determination and guts, but you have to realize you’re reading a manga and that comes with the territory.
Now, the elephant in the room here is that if you get invested in this at all, you’re staring down a series that is already over seventy volumes. You One Piece types will be fine, but I know that my attention span would never last.
Which I’m almost sad about - even knowing this won’t be an ongoing for me, I am sorely tempted to read the next volume because I am kind of intrigued to see where things are going plus the next assassin battle seems interesting (the first one is all skill, the second is all skill and dead weird).
If you like a good story with some interesting characters and lots of intrigue going on (there are at least two violent betrayals this volume and we’re not out of the starting blocks), well, you could do worse. My not reading it is down to having too much on my plate, not lack of interest.
4 stars - not my usual cup of tea, certainly, but I was very satisfied with the action and flavour of this particular blend, not to kill the metaphor. Recommended if it sounds remotely appealing.
"we may be servants right now but in the future our names will be carved into history"
In the great age of war...orphans Shin and Hyou constantly train in combat to better themselves. However through a chance meeting and unluck..they are thrown. into the bitter goings on in the Royal Palace.
dreams are shattered...but an epic journey commences.
The best thing on a large-scaled war ever!! Strategies of war in this manga is realistic yet very interesting! It's about a young king and a slave boy who are pursuing their extraordinary dreams!
Whenever I pick up a new historical fiction manga series, I’m always reminded of how easy it would be to become my dad—just absolutely OBSESSED with some niche area of history for no other reason than the love of the game.
Because why is a series about China’s warring states period so good???
There must be something wrong with me.
Anyway.
Like I said, this story is pretty good so far. It has such a gripping start. And, it has such a compelling, central plot that revolves around two impoverished, young warriors who dream of finding valor in fighting for their country. When one perishes in pursuit of that dream, it inspires the other to not only seek vengeance but see that their shared goal be achieved no matter what.
It’s a story with momentum and heart.
Now, the art is a bit weird. Not gonna lie. I’m not sure if I totally like it. Some of the designs are cool. I also appreciate how gross the illustrator makes the characters in the opposing royal court—it’s a clever way to convey their moral decay. But, it’s also a bit distracting at points. So, jury’s out on that.
But, everything else is working for me and I’m interested in reading more~
I think this is one of the hottest and well created manga today. It is based on how the Qin Dynasty was created in China and follows the young emperor and an young warrior. History, adventure, political intrigue, coming of age and war are all included in this saga. This is great. It is not fantasy but very close to it. A heavy but exciting reading!
It is now up to vol.30. I just started reading it online. They have only upto vol.10 so I need a trip to internet/manga cafe soon!!
This is a very good series. It follows a boy named Xin who is a peasant boy in a small village who enjoys sword fight sparring with his friend, Hyou. One day his friend is adopted by a rich noble and moves away. About a month later in the middle of the night Xin hears something outside. He goes outside to find Hyou, who is bleeding severely from a stab wound. I'm gonna leave it at that so I don't give anymore spoilers. Overall this is a fantastic manga series that I would highly recommend.

This Will Be Epic! 🔥
The backgrounds and character designs are incredibly detailed. Set in ancient China during the 3rd century BC, in the midst of the brutal Warring States period, Kingdom throws you into a world of war, ambition, and survival. It's bloody, dirty, cruel, and completely captivating.🙌🏻
Besides the gripping plot, one of my favorite aspects was the character dynamics. The overall tone is dark and serious, but the interactions between the characters bring moments of warmth and humor that balance everything perfectly.
Even this first volume makes it clear that something huge is being built here. Considering the series has over 70 volumes, I have a feeling this journey is only getting started 🙌🏻😅
An incredible start to what promises to be an epic series.
4.3/5 Kingdom is a dedicated and engaging story about a boy trying to become a great general during the warring states era of medieval China. It takes a bit to get going, but once it does, you never look back. It’s incredibly impactful to see the perspective of Shin throughout the different levels of being a soldier and how the consequences impact his journey as a warrior.
I really love all of the characters as they are incredibly unique, thought provoking, and stand larger than life.
This story can suffer a bit in the beginning as the conflict is not quite interesting and more political. I’d say the story truly begins when Shin becomes a foot soldier in Duke Hyou’s army. The art is not great at the beginning. However, the art improves tremendously as the stories goes on, and I really appreciate how the author curves straight objects like glaives to show impact in scenes. I also wish there was more focus on the romantic aspects as I feel there were some that were underdeveloped. Also, the official English translation will help with the names changing inexplicably.
For a long story I thought I’d be dragging myself through, Kingdom was an engaging and light read despite the heavy topics, grounded feel, and political focus. I never felt burnout, only glad I was able to experience Shin’s journey.
Man, Kingdom is one long ass series. Finally, it has come to America, so I made space on my shelf for it, trying to get ready for the 70+ volumes that will be coming in.
This starts off pretty great. We meet two orphans, Shin and Hyou, who have grown up together as slaves, dreaming of becoming the "Greatest Generals under the Heavens." Their bond is the heart of this volume, but tragedy strikes when a government official takes Hyou to the palace for a mysterious reason, leaving Shin behind.
Soon, war and political intrigue are placed upon them. I love the main character, Shin. He’s eager, angry, rash, and powerful. He’s the type of character I can’t wait to see grow, especially after he encounters Ei Sei, the young King of Qin who looks exactly like Hyou.
The villains all want power (starting with the King's treacherous half-brother, Sei Kyou), and the fights are pretty great. Way bloodier than I expected from Shonen. The stakes feel massive right from the jump as Shin is forced to protect the King in a desperate bid for survival.
Overall intense and well-paced, this has a lot of vibes of Vinland Saga, and I'm here for it. A 4 out of 5.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️-Just now Finished First Volume Of The Manga Kingdom by Yasuhisa Hara. I have heard about this manga for literally a decade or longer as it was always in Japanese only..finally now we got an official release in English and I really enjoyed the first volume. I’ve heard many people recommend this to people who love berserk, and Vinland saga, and those are both two of my favorite mangas. I really like what I see so far and I will definitely be continuing it. Great action great story already awesome art so glad to finally have a manga. I can read again consistently besides one piece. Another thing that makes it similar to Vinland Saga is that is also a historical fiction so that’s pretty cool. You don’t see that a lot in manga. Give this first volume a four out of five stars very engaging.P.S-love that it’s set in ancient China as that’s also a pretty rare setting in manga and just overall.
I read “Kingdam” is kind of shounen manga and so mainstream that It was published by the big company “Syuuei”. The story depicts that the ancient Chinese state in the 3rd century BC. There are two important characters like a protagonist, “Hyou” and “Shin” who are manservant, but trained to fight each other everyday to be a “Shogun”,Oneday, Only Hyou served royal family. that is important event approach thier goal. However the almost beginning of the story was chaos that Hyou was killed by someone, and He gave Shin a sword and a map that showed destination where Hyou want to go. That accident as trial and failure led Shin a hero’s Journey. Shin is humane and has justice. He goes for thier dream of becoming a Shogun for Hyou.

I was recommended by my friend, I finally did it! Story is very interesting but the character’s touches are not good. The scene of killing Hyo is good. Hyo said entrust the unification of the world. Hyo is cool and I was impressed by Hyo.
