A Novella Of The FBI Psychics

She doesn’t want him. He doesn’t need her. Like hell…

Destin Mortin’s psychic gift comes with an ugly twist—she excels at tracking down violent rapists. But it’s rough on relationships. Once, her partner Caleb was her everything: filter, shield, rescuer, lover. The only man who didn’t think her a freak. Then he walked away.

Destin turned her back on the FBI to work for a private agency, but now a particularly horrendous case has come up, and her boss wants her paired with only the best.

For Caleb Durand, leaving Destin was an act of self-preservation. Every time she flung herself headlong into dangerous situations, every time he nursed her through soul-crushing visions, he’d died a little more inside.

Now they are forced to work together one last time. Tragedy has changed them both, but Caleb knows if he lowers his shields for an instant, he won’t have an icicle’s chance in hell of resisting the temptation to lose himself in her wild power.

But to catch the rapist, it’s exactly what he’ll have to do.

Warning: Contains tortured souls who have lost love and pined for their missing half, a woman who can see evil, and a hot FBI agent.

Short story not a book spoilers may be below

But it was good. I liked the mystery and psychic stuff but something was just off. It was like you weren't getting the whole story. Maybe it's because this is book 5 of a series and I didn't know that but I just felt kind of out of the loop.

The ex-lovers meet after being apart for five years. He walked away from her but I am not really sure why. They are both psychic and were a team until he left. He devastated her and she is still angry with him. And very hurt. But get this, she moved on and had lovers (3 in the first year none after that), but he had none ever. Second book in two days to have that. I still hate it as much for the heroine to do that as I do my heroes. Disappointed me. Her psychic abilities were focused on rapes and they are sent to a college town to figure it out. There are twists and turns and it is interesting and I liked it. Just didn't love it. They slowly reconnect and I was very happy about that. They really did loved each other. I loved the hero, Caleb very much. I will read more in this series for sure.

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Michelle L. Olson:
*eARC received from the author in exchange for an honest review

This was my first foray into the world of Shiloh's FBI psychics, and I now wonder what has taken me so long.

The concept is fabulous, one that I've enjoyed from other series in the past, psychics working to solve crime, and the characters truly make the story come alive. Destin is a an ex-FBI psychic now working for a private firm. Her ability is unique, she can get into the heads of sex offenders and work with victims to see their suppressed and blocked memories to catch the bad guys, After 5 years of unrest, she is confronted once again by the love of her life and forced to work with him to catch a serial rapist.

Caleb is an FBI psychic, his ability being able to filter. He is also almost preternaturally observant - a great trait for an agent, not always so great for a boyfriend. Five years ago he was forced to leave Destin because their connection was so strong it was literally hurting him and he was afraid that it would ruin him, her, and anyone they were charged to protect. He never stopped loving her though, and this strange job he was called in to consult on could be the start of something new for them - if he can just get her to listen.

Action packed, sexy, emotionally charged and thrilling, The Unwanted was an incredible read and spurned my purchase and preorder of the rest of the books in the series. Highly recommended.

They are in the FBI and they're psychics! What's not to like?
Being with her had hurt. It had hurt, even as it made him more complete than he'd ever felt. It had broken him even as it made him.

Destin and Caleb have been apart for 5 years when they get teamed together on a rape case. From the moment they see each other again, sparks fly and even though they hurt each other, they realize that they might not be able to say goodbye again.
Being with her had turned into a wound. But walking away sometimes hurt just as much.

I loved how their psychic gifts worked together to make a perfect unit. Even in the years they were apart, they were in sync with each other. They were HOT together! This was a novella, but it didn't seem like it. It was well-developed and I didn't feel like it was too short.

It was like they'd been designed to complete each other.

Sadly this novella was boring for me. The H had walked out on the heroine years before and suffered when he knew she had lovers. They were brought together again to catch evil OM, but it was all memory and teases via their psychic connection. I found it boring, thought they were too self absorbed.

Favorite Quote: “All I knew was that you were leaving me...leaving me and breaking my heart.“

I thoroughly enjoy Shiloh Walker’s FBI Psychics series. An intensely sensual and intriguing dark paranormal series that addresses the choices one makes when battling evil with shocking gifts that can often work against the owner. The Unwanted is a novella that helps to forge the link between the FBI group and a private investigative group. Though part of the series, it can be read as a stand alone. The Unwanted is a shockingly seductive psychological thriller that hooked me from page one. Shiloh Walker has a wonderful writing style that draws you into her characters’ emotional pathways and lets you feel with them what they are experiencing. Romance and taut suspense go hand in hand as we follow a gritty and dark well plotted storyline down a twisting path of deception, betrayal, and madness.

Destin Mortin has a gift that gives as well as receives. A fact that her ex boyfriend and partner, Caleb Durand, struggled to cope with until he was forced to leave her to save his own sanity. When Destin’s boss hands her a case on some unsolved college rapes, Destin is dismayed to find she will be partnered with Caleb. Destin has never understood or forgave caleb for abandoning her. Caleb loved Destin unconditionally but her gift and her refusal to learn control over it killed his soul a little everyday. As Destin and Caleb investigate their case, they learn some interesting information that suggests that this case strikes closer to home then they could ever imagine.

The romance between them is hot yet bittersweet. The chemistry between them smolders heavy in the background as they struggle to get past the hurt and pain they left each other with. It’s a strong part of the storyline and complements the main conflict. Their physical scenes are tasteful and satisfying. It was very easy to get caught up in the emotional currents of these two star crossed lovers as try to find their second chance.

The secondary characters are bold, viable additions to the story as they add layers to the suspense and mystery. Each one is a piece in the puzzle; they make up a solid foundation for our storyline to build upon. As with any good thriller, there are multipe sub plots running through the main storyline and each one is a key to the final outcome. Ms. Walker does a fabulous job of maintaining these separate entities without overburdening us with unnecessary information or complicated scenarios. When it all comes together in the end, we are treated to an astounding finale that ties it all together.

The Unwanted is a worthy addition to this series and a must read for those readers who love their paranormal romances to be wrapped in dark emotional suspense and intrigue. I am looking forward to the release of her next full length novel in the series, The Protected, set to release September 3, 2013, by Berkley Trade.

I committed to reading this novella for someone so I did. But it was rather painful at times, and at the point where a character referred to himself as shit-faced in love, I about lost my lunch. I understand that the author was playing with the cliche 'drunk in love'. But shit-faced? Really? Ugh.

The writing was incredibly repetitive. An image of blood on sheets was supposed to be edgy, intriguing and carrying a certain amount of shock value. But the author repeated the image three times in two pages, using the exact same wording for twice which just rendered the imagery creepy and lost the shock and edgy value.

The main characters were reasonably developed but the secondary characters, even one who plays a pivotal role in the climax, were as thin as the paper their descriptions were printed on.

The plot had an intriguing idea at it's core, but did not hold up to further reflection after I finished the book.

The breakup between Destin & Caleb had them both hurting, now years later they get thrown together to solve a case of a serial rapist.
Both still have feelings they try to hide, but the way they need to work together soon has the resolve crumbling.
Suspense, Paranormal romance and smutty fluff, great read and love this series with crime solving para-psychics.

I have read the previous books in this series and always enjoyed them. While I liked this one it did not hold the same impact that the others did. I don't think it was because it was shorter but just that the characters did not seem as engaging as at other times. The story was also a little thinner but important to tell. This was more about the two agents than it was about the case that they were supposed to be working. There was a lot of soul searching and inner dialogue about the past and how it had affected them and not enough about the crime.

Destin Mortin and Caleb Durand had been partners in an FBI unit which was separate but equal to the one run by Taylor Jones. Caleb's specialty is that he can filter and help a psychic to better handle their gift by making things clearer for them and taking some of the pain and anxiety. Destin's gift is one that comes with a high price, she excels at tracking rapists but not just any rapists, she tracks the most violent.

When Caleb starts to lose himself in Destin and cannot tell where she ends and he begins he decides to leave. Destin is left heartbroken but blames him for not caring and does not look to herself as part of the problem. When he is brought into a case 5 years later she is not happy to see him because she believes she has moved on. Life can be unfair but sometimes fate gives you a second chance.

This was a nice enough story but I would have been just as happy to have more of the case and a bit less of the emotional stuff. Would still recommend, just not enthusiastically.

Destin had worked for the FBI and now works for Elise Oswald or Oz's group who solved crimes using psychic abilities. Her psychic gift has to do with seeing events through the mind of a rapist. It makes her good at catching them but has made her life difficult, especially when Caleb left her five years ago. She'd had to learn to live her life without the man she loved who had also been the filter that kept the nightmares and emotions from overwhelming her. Now five years later, Caleb still works for the FBI, but Oz has called him in to work with Destin on a very special case of a rapist operating on the campus of the University of Virginia. Now they must put aside the baggage of the last five years in order to stop a dangerous predator.
The Unwanted sheds light on the character of Oz who appears in several of the books in The FBI Psychics Series. Although the novella is short (118 pages), the description of emotions and past experiences is very clear, making it a cut above many books of this length. Fans of The FBI Psychics Series won't be disappointed.

A Novella of the FBI Psychics

Can be read as a stand alone.

This blurb came from the author’s website.

I have read several of Walker’s FBI Psychics novels and enjoyed how she delved into both the cost and benefit of having a psychic ability to an individual. She also explored the hope, anger, frustration, grief, determination, and mingled pride/regret of the law enforcement individuals who go after people who commit a particular type of crime. In each she included a romance built on that quagmire of emotion and danger – grounding her characters in the here and now as they dealt with the fact that they were only human. So when I saw that she had a novella coming out from Samhain, set in the same world I had to try it. I enjoyed reading The Unwanted but I felt like there was a little something missing.

Caleb and Destin had a history, a very involved history that didn’t have a messy drawn out ending but a rather abrupt one. The past relationship and the method of its ending, five years before this story started, still reverberated inside both of them. When they were thrown together unexpectedly on a case tracking down a serial rapist in a small college town each had to face not only their open emotional wounds but the realization that the other person wasn’t as unaffected as they portrayed. While that did mean each had deep feelings for the other so the relationship wasn’t one sided, Walker used that to further explain why the earlier version of Caleb and Destin were unhealthy for each other which I thought was a very interesting take. Their emotional angst and journey provided a good way for me to avoid focusing too much of my attention on the victims. I was glad because the blurb did not exaggerate when it mentioned exactly what type of criminal Destin tracked.

This particular story did not have as much physical danger to the investigators, Caleb or Destin, as other books have with their respective investigators. The majority of the investigation involved Destin’s ability to see, much les detective work. As a result, I felt as if the investigation was a little offset from the story with the focus on the characters’ emotional journey instead of an even balance. I did not feel that that aspect detracted from the story at all because as I mentioned above I needed some distance from the crimes themselves. I thought it was very fascinating that in this particular story both the hero and heroine suffered from side effects of their psychic abilities because it balanced the scales of power between them. To me that was another indication that they completed or fit each other but both had to become mature enough to maintain their own separate identities and not merge into a blurred mess unable to function without the other.

I enjoyed seeing Caleb and Destin grow and heal over the course of the story, but I felt as if some things were left out or ignored. The first piece that I thought was missing started in the initial conversation Destin had with her boss when she mentioned suffering from extreme nosebleeds due to her visions yet I didn’t notice mention of one occurring during the story itself. I also thought the reason why Caleb and Destin were assigned this particular case but did not receive all of the information was a bit too much of a set-up. I thought there were other reasons to not get all the information in the beginning unless it is intended for some other event Walker has in mind for the FBI Psychics world. The last thing that bothered me about this story I will freely admit is probably a personal issue. The huge elephant under the carpet between Caleb and Destin was discussed and left with the acknowledgment that it would be dealt with when they were both ready. I really wanted step one of “ready” to occur in this story completely understanding that the cure would take years. I needed some movement forward because I felt like they were at step zero-point-five but on the other hand I was very glad to see the elephant at least addressed.

Overall I enjoyed reading The Unwanted, this novella provided a different take on the FBI Physics, their interaction, and the personal cost of their jobs. I felt the shorter length meant Walker had to choose between focusing on the characters or the suspense/mystery aspect of it and as a result this installment was much more character driven. I also found a few things that bothered me but they did not keep me from enjoying the story. I am curious to see where Walker goes with this novella format and if future stories will have the same character focus.

I give The Unwanted a B

Quick read but I enjoyed it. Hot couple with some history that needed to be resolved and have their happily ever after. thankfully you didn't need to know a lot about it to still enjoy the story. Because of the shortness of the book things move a bit fast and yes the ending seem a bit rush but you have to understand that it is a novella and details are not as forthcoming and the story concentrates more on the couple.

Each book is a stand alone. Psychics, mystery and romance, this series ticks all my boxes and is well written. I like the recurring main characters woven into the stories as the unit feels more like a family who looks out for each other rather than just a work team.

With every book I read in this series, I’m amazed at the depth of psychic gifts Shiloh Walker gives her characters. On top of the tortured and fascinating characters themselves, it’s those gifts that push the series into the stratosphere for me.

I like that not only do these FBI psychics have absolutely out-of-this-world gifts, they sometimes work in pairs to either bolster or filter a partner’s abilities. That’s the case here with Destin and Caleb. Only the wrinkle is Caleb walked away from Destin five years ago, and now they’re being forced to work together again, though they’ve worked for different entities since their split. Back when they were a team, Caleb was always by Destin’s side, filtering the worst part of the job for her so she could concentrate on bringing their quarry down. They were also lovers with a future. Or so she thought.

Caleb warned Destin over and over again that her gung-ho attitude in tracking the worst of the worst would work against her one day. Then when it all became too much for him and she wouldn’t listen when he tried to talk to her, he’d had no choice but to walk away for self-preservation. It tore him up to leave her, and it’s tearing him up now to be close to her once again and see the woman she’s become. But they can get through this one job and then see what’s what. Or so he thinks.

Now they have double emotion, double wariness, and double evil to fight while together. Destin learned the hard way the lesson Caleb tried to get through to her all those years ago, and she’s paid dearly for that, bearing the emotional scars of a case gone wrong. Caleb’s scars are more visible but none less emotional in the guilt he carries around. Amid the danger and evilness they’re trying to uncover, working through the past into a possible future is taking its toll. Even when more truths between them surfaces.

As they wade through the images and sounds of a horrific night left at the scene, they begin to suspect someone hasn’t been totally truthful with them, and a whole new set of circumstances puts them and their case in danger of going seriously wrong. This is where they need to put their newly found trust to work to make sure all involved come out okay on the other side. I don’t know if we’ll see these two again in future books, but it would be nice to see how life is for them down the road, how they’ve resolved their logistics and what life has been like for them. It’s nice to see maturity in them, especially since it’s so hard won for them both, see them realize their mistakes and then learn to live with the consequences.

As usual, Shiloh Walker keeps me riveted to the page, even in a shorter novella. Characters who worm their way into your heart and soul at first glance, who are put into terrifyingly horrible situations, only to become stronger for it. Love scenes that are raw, intense, and so very sensual, the kind that romance readers crave. This series is one of my favorites lately. I’m knee deep in The Protected, due out in about a week or so. I can’t wait to talk to you about that one!

A Psychological Thriller, Romantic Suspense

This was the first time I read one of Shiloh Walker’s FBI Psychics stories and it won’t be my last. I like the theme of psychics working to solve violent crimes and the personal cost to themselves. The suspense is dark and sensual. The emotions of the characters run deep and are palpable. You feel and root for them. My attention was captured at the beginning and kept throughout. Though this novella is part of a series it stood alone well and though short it packed a punch.

Destin Mortin is a former FBI psychic now working for an outside agency whose specialty is tracking down rapists. Connecting with such monstrous individuals, seeing the memories of the victims is damaging to her psyche and destructive to relationships. She lost the most important relationship in her life that with her partner and lover, due to her “gift” five years ago.

Caleb Durand is a lower level FBI psychic whose talent is to act as a filter for other psychics and he is highly observant. Years ago he was partnered with Destin but had to leave her to save himself, their connection was destroying him and she failed to see it or the danger it posed to themselves and to others. He loved her but that love was killing him.

Now these two are brought together again for a case by Destin’s boss who wants the best partner there is for her on this case and no one partnered with Destin better than Caleb. No one understands her needs like he does and she will need such support to solve this case. Meeting again showed them both how much they still love each other and need each other but things have to be different this time. There is more than a case that needs to be solved here.

I found this story to be an in-depth look at two individuals who have taken on the role in life of fighting evil. We learn of their mistakes and the suffering born of such; the lessons they learned and the growth that the years apart enabled them allowing the re-connection of two lovers who perhaps can have another chance at a future.

Destin and Caleb are both psychics. Up until 5 years ago, they also both worked for the FBI...and were a couple. In a shocking turn of events for Destin, Caleb left her...just walked out and she hasn't seen him since. Presently, Caleb still works for the FBI, but Destin now works for a private investigation company with many of her former FBI colleagues. Destin has never felt the connection to anyone else that she felt with Caleb, working together or as a couple, and her boss knows this. When a new case comes up that's not even on the FBI radar, Destin's boss decides only the best will do...bringing in Caleb to partner with Destin.

In their time apart, neither Destin or Caleb has been able to completely forget the other. Being together again will be a test neither of them prepared for, both personally and professionally. They both carry scars, they have both changed, but they will need to put their personal differences aside if they are to be successful in their mission - they need each other to do this. A forced togetherness might force them even farther apart...or pull them even closer together. First they need to focus on the job, but will they be there for each other to pick up the pieces afterwards? When they find what has been missing between them, can they take another chance at love together?

The Unwanted is a fast paced, action packed romantic suspense! Caleb knows just what Destin needs on the job and off...that has not changed for them. Shiloh writes a perfect blend Caleb and Destin's broken relationship and the suspense of their job. The Unwanted is a quick read, because you won't want to put it down! I really liked both Caleb and Destin, watching them struggle to heal and try to be together again.

This novella is the perfect length for Destin and Caleb's story! The Unwanted can be read alone, but I highly recommend the Shiloh Walker's other FBI books too!

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Destin Mortin is a psychic. Caleb Durand works for the FBI and knows Destin. Psychics are not the brunt of jokes like they used to be. Psychics were considered charlatans back in the day. They are starting to get a lot of people believing in what they do and getting the respect that they deserve.

There are people that either don’t understand those with “the gift” or they think the person is crazy. Shiloh shows the reader what a psychic goes through when they’re on a case. It doesn’t just take a toll on the victim - Destin also feels what is going on. Caleb is the man that centers Destin from all that pain.

If you are already a fan of Shiloh’s you will enjoy this latest. It’s different from what I have read of hers in the past but it was a book where everything was believable. I didn’t feel like she put sex into her story just to grab my attention. It was an expression of love between the two characters. It also left me wanting to catch up on the series. I have an anthology that I didn’t realize has one of her FBI Psychic stories in it – I’ll have to go back and reread it.

Once you get to the end of the story, make sure you continue reading. The “Author’s Note” shows us some things that we may take for granted since it may not affect our little world. For some, it may even be a wake up call. Shiloh makes it real because she gives us some very important statistics. It also makes you think about what is currently going on with our own military.

There are other books in this series and if you have not read them, or want to check out what else Shiloh has written, stop over to http://www.shilohwalker.com/website/. You can also find out what she has upcoming.

You can always count on Shiloh Walker to deliver a story full of suspense, damaged characters and how they make their way to each other.  Destin and Caleb are a perfect example of that.

As a fan of second chance love stories, I was rooting for Destin and Caleb from the start.  They ended their relationship years ago precisely because of their psychic gifts.  And the fact that they can work well together is what brings them together again.  More mature, more life experience.  They realize now what they had and maybe what they could again.

This is a novella and it was a quick read, but I also felt that Shiloh didn't torture her characters as much in this present story.  I think they probably have been tortured enough prior to getting to this point.

I always love reading Shiloh letting you get in the mindset of a bad guy.  Through Destin we also experience some of the victims since this is who she can psychically connect to.  This story was perhaps a bit less gritty than some of the other stories in this series, but no less serious.  There's a rapist that needs to be stopped and only a powerful team of psychics to get to him.

Although I would've loved to see more action, I think the romance and the rediscovery of the main characters carried this story very well.  THE UNWANTED is my favorite story so far in this series.

Destin Mortin and Caleb Durand are both psychics and they're also a couple. Then five years ago, Caleb walked out, breaking Destin's heart.

Now, there's a rapist loose in Charlottesville and the police can't seem to catch him. Enter Destin. Her psychic ability allows her to connect on a deeper level with the victims and hopefully find the rapist. Caleb's the only one who can ground Destin enough for her to work through all the white noise and focus on the case. Neither of them wants to see the other one because it means looking at the feelings that are still present. Eventually though, they'll both have to lower their shields and let each other in if they want a chance to solve this case. And maybe find a second chance at the love they once shared.

The Unwanted was a fast paced romance. Caleb knows exactly what Destin needs to do her job, even when she doesn't. Shiloh does a great job writing their story so that you feel the emotions that Caleb and Destin are feeling as they struggle to solve this case and sort through their feelings for each other. It's a quick read mainly because you'll be so absorbed, you won't want to put it down.

Having never read one of Shiloh's books, I was a little worried that I would be lost, but this novella is written to be a stand alone novel (although I'm now on the hunt for the rest of this series).

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.
This is the story of Destin Mortin and her ex partner and one time lover Caleb Durand who have previously both worked for the FBI. They both have psychic abilities and Destin has the unenviable gift of being able to track rapists through their victims memories. This power has unfortunate side effects and she needs an anchor (Caleb) to help her channel and deal with the aftermath of her visions.
Unfortunately five years ago Caleb left her as he felt Destin neither needed nor truly wanted him. They are tasked with finding and capturing a rapist who has brutally attacked at least seven young women. Being thrown back together is a tortuous ride for both of them but work together they must.
I have not read a book from this author before and expected just another paranormal romance with a few sizzling sex scenes thrown in. I could not have been more wrong! Yes the idea of psychics solving crimes has been written about before but this tale touched upon the human fears that we all have. Relationships are hard work and don't always go smoothly. The characters here have to confront their past mistakes and find out if they can ever forgive and forget. This is a story with heart and although quite short I have no hesitation in giving it a 5

I usually don't read sequels/novellas that even though are part of a series, don't have the same main characters. I wasn't tempted to until I read the summary to this one.

This was a great novella (and seeing as the last one I read was pretty shitty, I was rather happy). I am only sad there wasn't more. This doesn't mean I'll be reading the other books in the series but I sure as hell am tempted to go read the first book again.

I'll admit the main reason I was attracted to this novella (and why I was attracted to the 'other' one) was because of the second chance romance thing going on (I happen to be a sucker for those). And it was great. It played out very well and while I would give anything to have had more than just a short novella, this novella was pretty satisfactory. It has a beginning a middle and an end.

I'd definitely recommend it to the fans of the series and even to those who haven't read it (since you don't really need to read the series to be able to understand this novella).

I think by now you all know how much I love this series. And this one is no exception. As this is a novella instead of a full length novel I will keep the review short and sweet too.

Once again we have interesting characters with an involved background that we learn about but doesnt bog down the stories progress. Watching the chemistry spark back and forth as they try to learn to work together again and face their pasts is a not to be missed ride you wont ever forget.

While it is story 3.5 in the series. It is not necessary to read the ones that came before it, you should just because they are great stories. But you don't have to read them first to enjoy this one. If you love romantic suspense you really don't want to miss it.

This is a novella in the FBI Psychics Series. I really enjoyed it. Destin Mortin and Caleb Durant worked together in the FBI. They were partners and lovers. Five years ago, Caleb Durant left Destin. he stayed with the FBI and she went to work for a private company. Destin's boss has asked for Caleb to work with Caleb to catch a serial rapist in Virginia. The connection is still there when they meet. Destin doesn't understand why Caleb left. Caleb doesn't want to share the reasons but tells her she should have asked him to stay. In working the case, they re-connect with each other. The case is difficult but they solve it. The finally talk everything out.
