USA Today Bestselling and award-winning author Rita Herron fell in love with books at the ripe age of eight when she read her first Trixie Belden mystery. But she didn’t think real people grew up to be writers, so she became a teacher instead. Now she writes so she doesn’t have to get a real job. With over ninety books to her credit, she’s penned romantic suspense, romantic comedy and YA novels, but she especially likes writing dark romantic suspense and crime fiction set in small southern towns. I thought this book had a pretty good plot line, and at times I was sucked in. But the errors really tripped me up, and kind of ruined the experience for me, especially in the final fight scene. There were several repetitions in the actions of the characters (drawing a gun, then drawing it again two paragraphs later, that sort of thing). I think that if the author would have done another round or two of editing, this would have been a much more solid and enjoyable book.
Alrighty then! Geoffrey was as crazy as a loon. I just loved to hate him and I knew, eventually, he’d get his ass kicked or someone would kill him. He was just insane in his thinking process. I know a lot of you can’t read about abuse but the way I look at it it’s just a story in a book and sooner or later the abuser will get what’s coming to him, and then some.
And he did. However, let me tell you how it went: She took the 22 out of her bra and aimed the gun at Geoff. Then on the very next page she took the gun out of her bra AGAIN and shot Geoff in the chest but he was still able to attack her and start strangling her. Then Alex, beaten and shot twice, got the gun and told Geoff to get off of Mia and Geoff then turned and attacked Alex, at which time Alex got far enough away from Geoff to shoot Geoff in the heart. BUT Geoff comes after him again and Alex shoots Geoff in the heart a second time. That was one man that was hard to kill. A bullet to the chest and 2 to the heart before he finally went down. REALLY?? And Alex had a bullet to the chest and one in his leg, too. Ridiculous! The silliest shooting and killing I’ve ever read.
Except for latter it was a good story but THAT just made it too crazy.
There was a sex scene but nothing that led up to it so it was kinda chintzy. No sexual tension = lousy sex.
I read Ms. Herron's Slaughter Creek series and I loved every book. Just because I didn't like this one that much doesn't mean I'll quit reading her books.
A PRETTY GOOD MYSTERY, A SHORT READ, ABOUT STALKING AND SPOUSE ABUSE. THIS FORMER HUSBAND IS BEYOND CRAZY AND DOESN'T LIKE TAKING NO FOR AN ANSWER. HE LOOKS AT THE WORLD THROUGH VERY DIFFERENT EYES, FROM MOST PEOPLE. HE THINKS BECAUSE HE IS RICH HIS WORD IS ALWAYS RIGHT. BOOK REMINDED ME OF "SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY," THAT HUSBAND WAS A REAL NUT JOB TOO. HAS A HAPPY ENDING, THATS ALL I WANTED.
This was absolutely the worst written book I've read ever! I think Rita Herron has seventh graders moonlighting for her after school. I will never read another book by her. i read it all the way through, well I did slide over the sex scenes, just to see if it was so thoroughly stupid and poorly written from start to finish. And guess what? It is! Don't just skip this book skip this author. How do these people get published? I gave her one star but there was no way to give her a "negative" star rating or I would have.
very interesting story of Mia, a young women, survivor of very violent domestic abuse and her attempt to rebuilt a life in a ranch, just to have her future and dreams almost destroyed by the escape of her ex husband. I loved the way Rita Herron described the steps and escalade of violence of Geoff, the horrible ex husband and the impact it had on her self esteem. I took back a star because I would have loved to have Alex character more detailled about his past, his guilt, I would have loved to read a dialogue between Alex and Mia aboutit.
Mia was in a marriage of control and beatings. She has decided to get out but Geoff has found out so when she tries to run he beats her again but this time she presses charges and he ends up in prison. Alex is the Ranger that helped her the first time and has to come warn he has escaped. Not they both have to fight to stay alive.
All in all, I'm glad I read this book, but there was nothing new that I hadn't read in other books before: crazy ex-husband, battered wife and her new man with a difficult past.
There was a turn of events when the heroine had to meet her ex in order to save the hero, and it made me smile because of how it reminded me of those scenes in action movies when actors prepare themselves before the final battle :) Here is a small excerpt to give you an impression:
Mentally reviewing tips from her self-defense class, she tugged on a jacket, and stashed a canister of mace in her pocket. She tucked her revolver into her bra, then strapped a small switchblade to her ankle beneath her jeans.
A few pages forward she shoots her ex in the chest (by the way, there are 2 lines where she yanked the .22 from her bra), but, of course, he is still alive and goes after her and fights her. At the same time our hero finds another gun and fires it, catching the bad guy straight in the heart. Believe it or not, he is still alive and lunges after the hero and gets one more bullet in his heart. He is finally dead and everyone lived happily ever after.
This book was okay but not really great. It just didn't do it for me. Despite some editing issues it was well written.
Mia is abused woman whose ex husband has just escaped prison and is looking for her. Alex is the Texas Ranger who worked her case and has taken it upon himself to be her bodyguard. Things start going wonky on the ranch Mia is living/working on and Alex and his law enforcement buddies are on a mission to find out what is going on and who is working with who. All the while Mia blames herself for anything and everything that happens.
This is what really got to me, how this woman, who has survived so much at the hands of her crazy ex husband, takes all the responsibility for everyone else's actions. I just wanted to grab her and shake her and say get over it already.
I don't know if I'll read anymore in this series, but only time will tell.
Mia has finally found peace and safety on a remote ranch, working with an older couple, after her brutal husband was put in jail for attempted murder. Hers! Now he is loose and she has nowhere to go. Though she’s terrified, she will not let the animal force her to run again. It’s time to stay and fight. Along with the help of the handsome local law enforcement officer, Sergeant Alex Townsend. Geoff is free and he’s coming after the woman who made vows at their wedding and promised to stay with him until “Death do us part!” He means for her to live up to them….either way. The details in this story carried me along as I felt the fear building for poor Mia. It is so well done that I couldn’t put it down.
Intense short read.. After her abusive and obsessed husband almost kills her Mia starts over on a ranch in Texas. But when he manages to escape prison Mia and the Texas Ranger who was with her through out the trail know just where he is headed. Her ex-husband isnt letting anything get in his way to get to Mia and its up to Alex to stop him but Mia isnt the scared obedient wife anymore and she's ready for him this time.
Mia is a woman trying to put her life back together after her husband tried to kill her. He abused her in so many ways. She divorced him and move away. Alex is the hot Texas Ranger that helped her thru her ex-husband's trial.
Geoff (the ex-husband) breaks out of prison and he is coming for Mia. Alex comes back to help Mia. Thru all the drama Alex and Mia fall in love. Alex and Mia save each other. They have a happy ending. I enjoyed this story.
Bought this as a freebie a while back and got bored scrolling though what to read and thought I'd give it a go. Well written, a bit short though. Could have been a lot better by not having one dramatic event straight after the other. It was a little bit wham, bam thank you m'am with the constant action, gun fights, murders straight after each other. Not much on the erotica, if that's your thing, more a romantic suspense, but overall ok.
This book grabbed you from the beginning and didn’t let you go. I didn’t know if the hero and heroine were ever going to get their shit together and bam, it happens. There was so much drama in this book, it will definitely keep you enthralled. I couldn’t put it down. I will continue reading Ms. Herron’s works as long as she keeps spinning tales like this one. Where can I find me an Alex?
Safe in his Arms is the first book by Rita Herron that i read. I really enjoyed this book and expect to read more. It's a modern day western with Texas Rangers, sheriffs, a ranch, a prison break, murder an abusive exhusband bent on revenge and a little romance and the chemistry equals Safe in His Arms.
I didn't get halfway through and was already thinking I can hardly wait for the next in the series. I thought it was a very well written and a beautifully touching love story. It captures you from the beginning to the end without losing your interest. I have not been disappointed with any of the books I have read by this author.
Brief, predictable, formular story line. Texas Ranger comes to guard victim of domestic violence from the obsessive husband who broke out of prision, falls in love with her and saves her after several violent encounters. Minimal character development of one dimensional folks. A Disappointment. 2.5 overall for story and 1.5 for sexiness. Blaw!
This was not quite what I would consider a full-length novel, but there was a considerable amount of action going on for the size of the book. Sometimes a crazy amount. More than one antagonist as well. I was entertained & pleased since it was a freebie.
So I might be slight overdosing on the whole cowboy theme for the challenge, while the book was well written and for a shorter story all the bases character development wise were met, this one was just "meh" for me...did not love it but did not hate it....
good story I love the Texas Ranger stories. they are so sexy and strong. I am anxious to read the next book in this series And of course I love a 'll of Rita Herron's books Buy it and read it you won't be disappointed
Married to a controlling abusive man, Mia almost died at his hands. He went to prison, and she ran, divorced him and started a new life on a ranch. Now Texas Ranger Alex Townsend has to tell her that her Ex escaped. Fast moving story, with several twists.
