How to Create a Website Using Wordpress: The Beginner's Blueprint to Creating a Website or Blog in Less Than 60 Minutes by Brian Patrick is a book chocked full of valuable information for the person wanting to learn WordPress. Wordpress is the industry's go to program for building websites and blogs because it requires no knowledge of coding or programming to use. This book provides the reader with everything he or she needs to know to build their first website or blog and have it up and running very quickly. Brian Patrick makes good on all he promises except for the promise of providing his readers instant, free access to over 40 professionally recorded video tutorial. You will not be able to access those videos because all the embedded links that point back to the author's website, which is where you have to go to access the video tutorials do not work. I checked them again and again over a period of a couple of days to make sure it wasn't a temporary issue but the problem persisted. I tried running a search for his site and came up empty. That would be a big disappointment for anyone who downloaded this book who was a visual learner. Still this book is worth the read for it step by step instruction and for the links (which do work) to Wordpress resources. Check it out on Amazon.
This book does an excellent job of offering the reader the fundamental knowledge of using Wordpress.org to create a website with high functionality. Brian Patrick covers everything one would need to know to get their new site up and running without difficulty, using his simple guide.
I liked this book because there are no frills and no fluff, it is simple to follow and he offers plenty of information that can be easily utilized. It should be noted that this book is for the .org users and not for the .com users, although some of the information can be used for both platforms.
As I am a Wordpress blogger I was familiar with much of what was said here, but I did learn a few things that I wasn't aware of. For those who have never used Wordpress, the author walks you through step by step and teaches you how to use the dashboard and basic functions of Wordpress for a better experience. The author has included links to hosts, and information about virtually every aspect of using Wordpress.
I would recommend this book for anyone interested in going this route to build a site. The information is current and valuable.
It's always hard to review a book that calls itself something like "The Beginners Guide / Intro / Blueprint..." and this is no different. For this, this was disappointing. I've not used WordPress...but this book is pulled from very general web pages. For someone (like Brian, who said several times he has done over 50 web sites) I can't imagine he had to do any research at all to write this. Screen layouts, install scripts for his preferred hosting platform (which, coincidentally, you can buy at a discounted price from the website that accompanies the book (or actually from other domains that promote domains for sale), widgets are all covered.
I guess the other warning indicator should have been the Editors Note is written by Brian Patrick - the author - and also pitches "free videos and cheap hosting".
I am all for authors supplementing their income, and to be fair, Brian has written more books than me - but a slightly less cynical approach to monetarising his services - or declaration as an advertorial would be a good thing.
This book is targeting individuals and small businesses who need to develop and manage a website, but have no experience in doing so. Keeping the target audience in mind, I think this is a very valuable book. It's easy to read and comprehend with practical advice and guidance. It includes helpful links to other resources and examples. Not only does it give you step-by-step guidance, but it tells you why you might want to do things a certain way. Even though the book was published in April 2013, much of the information is still applicable for today. This is hard to accomplish with today's evolving and changing technology, standards, and best practices. There were a few grammar mistakes and the ending was a little heavy on the author's sales pitch and offers, but overall, I recommend it as a solid read for people who are new at setting up a Wordpress website.
